ANALYSIS
The SWOT analysis is an effective method of identifying your strengths
and weaknesses and identifying opportunities you have and threats you
face. Carrying out this SWOT analysis on your skills, knowledge and ability
in URDU will set you confidently on your revision journey.
Strengths – what are you good at? You might be confident with listen-
ing activities than reading activities. You might be good in Listening
higher tier and Reading foundation tier. Write them in the
“strengths” box on the SWOT grid. You can think about the personal
qualities you have which will help your URDU revision e.g you may
be able to work well under pressure. Write down two qualities which
will help you. Be realistic.
Weaknesses – choose two or three things that you know you are not
good at and write them in the grid. You can think about your person-
al weaknesses like you may get stressed before exams or you may
find it difficult to revise. Write them down too. Again be honest.
Opportunities – what opportunities do you have? For example have
you a good study area at home? Do you get any help from your par-
ents or relatives? Is the Urdu examination important for what you
want to do next? Think carefully and write down two opportunities.
What has the school put in place to help in Urdu?
Threats – What will stop you revising and getting good grade in UR-
DU? Do you find it hard to study at home? Do you find reading diffi-
cult or boring? Are your friends a distraction? Write down the obsta-
cles you face but be honest.

Listening and Reading Exams format
The listening and reading exams are each worth 20% of your final marks and they
are very important.
Listening Exam Unit 1 46451
FOUNDATION
You are provided 5 minutes before the exam starts, during which you can look
through the paper. This is very important so you must utilise the first 5 minutes
to read through all questions.
The exam lasts 30 minutes.
You will have easier questions to start and it will become harder when you move
forward.
HIGHER
You are provided 5 minutes before the exam starts, during which you can look
through the paper. This is very important so you must utilise first 5 minutes to
read through all questions.
The exam lasts 40 minutes.
You will have easier questions to start and it will become harder when you move
forward.
Reading Exam Unit 2 46452
FOUNDATION
The exam lasts 30 minutes.
You will have easier questions to start and it will become harder when you move
forward.
HIGHER
The exam lasts 50 minutes.
Please remember: For ALL of the questions you will have to answer in ENGLISH.
You will not get marks if you answer in URDU.
Which skills would you need for these exam questions?
LISTENING Follow the instructions
Do read the whole paper in the given 5 minutes. Read all questions and make
any notes on the paper. Do remember that sometimes there are two parts of a
question and the examiner speaks about both parts in one go or sometimes
part two first and part one next. Therefore, give special attention to parts ques-
tions. Reading before the examination will have a great effect on your results.
Stay focused
Prevent yourself from being distracted and concentrate on what the person is
saying.
Detect emotions
Listen to the emotion in the examiner’s voice. Does it match or endorse the
words/ pictures they have used in the paper?
Listen again
Listen again carefully to gain more information on points you are not very clear.
Don’t write unless you are 100% sure
You listen more effectively when you’re not writing. Let them finish what they
are saying; if you hear half the information, you might miss important points for
your answer.
Don’t pre-empt
Avoid pre-empting what the examiner is going to say, chances are you will be
wrong and miss some of the content of their conversation. e.g Examiner says,”
For our secondary school, we need a trained cook.” Now in the paper there are
two pictures one (Teacher) second (Cook). Most of the students tick picture of a
teacher after listening the word school.
Recap key facts very quickly
Summarise and reflect back to check you have heard the key facts and content
of the examiner’s conversation correctly.
Use questions to get help
Sometimes you need help during exams and the best source of help is the ques-
tion. Read the question and understand and you will be able to answer.
The Listening Test
Look at the example below of a question you might have to answer in the Listening
test if you heard something about Umar Javed:
Personal description
Complete this form with the required information.
Example:
1.a First Name: ………Umar…………………………………………………
1.b Surname:………………………………………………………………………
1.c Age:………………………………………………………………………………
1.d Height:………………………………………………………………………….
1.e Personality:………………………………………………………………….
For the above question you need to know;
Your alphabet
Numbers
Words which tell you what someone is like; rude, chatty, amusing or pleasant.
What if you don’t understand every word?
Don’t panic! You probably won’t understand every word, so focus on the clues in
the question and listen for the word that matter.
If you have a question about clothes, perhaps the clue will be feet, hands or
head.
If the question is about food, the clue might be in the time – what meal is eaten
and when?
And don’t forget – use whatever you know about the country where the lan-
guage is spoken to help you make sense of what you are hearing.
The Reading Test
Reading test is considered a bit tough by majority of language students because stu-
dents have to read and take information from short to long extracts. But if you do
not panic and use exams techniques, you will be able to answer the questions.
Techniques
If there are any pictures, make sure you know what information they are giving.
The title will always be in English, so before you read the article you already
know something about what you are going to read.
Now if the question is about True, False or not in the Text, read the statement
which will be in English and try to translate a few words that you can and
match with the text and decide which of the statement might or might not be
true before you make your final choices.
If the question is about Match the Title with suitable Urdu statements, you will
have all titles in English. Try to translate the title or understand properly and
go back and read the statements carefully. If you cannot read the whole state-
ment, try to read a few words and match with the given titles and decide. For
example the title is Cooking, the statement will definitely have some food
items. If the title is Health, the statement will definitely have words related to
health like doctor, medicine, exercise etc.
If the demand is to choose a suitable answer for each question, you should Read
the question carefully and match the words of the question with the given an-
swers. Every answer will have at least one word i.e either verb or ending simi-
lar to the question which will help you to make your decision.
If the question demands your answers in writing after reading a long extract, you
should read all questions first because they will be in English. Now Read ques-
tion 1 and understand the demand before reading the text. Once you have
understood, you should start reading the text and try to get as much information
as you can. If you have understood the question properly, you will be able to
take information from the text and answer the question. The technique is that
all answers will be hidden in the passage but in proper sequence for example
answer for question 1 will be hidden in first two or three lines, answer for
question will be next two lines and so on.
VOCABULARY
Vocabulary is the most important to get an “A*”. There are many different ways to
learn vocabulary and everyone has a preference to how they memorise things. The
best way for most of the people is to learn vocabulary with the help of pictures or
to learn items together in categories.
List of words on one theme
Memorise
Retain = A*
Decide one theme and make a list of words you want to learn. Now match them
with pictures or make two columns write English meaning in one column and
URDU in the second.
Complete all vocabulary lists included in this revision guide.
For Reading Exams
For you GCSE Urdu, you need to read a variety of text ranging from train timetables
to articles in magazines, so it is unwise to stick to just one sort of reading material.
Read from Textbook or Class materials use school library for easy books in Urdu,
read newspapers and adverts on internet.
Remember the more you read the better it will be for your learning.
Read all topics included in this revision guide
Complete all given exercises for practice
Produce = A*
Self-Assessment Checklist
On the following page you will find a checklist of the things you need to know from the
four contexts for the Reading and Listening Tests. When you are sure you can do each
separate task, tick it off on your list and move on to the next one. You have plenty of time
to learn what you need to know, so don’t tick it until you are confident you can do all the
things you have to.Your language is grouped into different contexts. Each context is sub
divided into separate elements. For each one you first need to make sure that you have
learned the essential vocabulary in this guide. After that, there are boxes for Reading and
Listening skills. As you work in class you will be practising all four skills. It’s up to you to
tick off a skill on your chart when you are confident you have acquired it.
