OverviewVehicle features and optionsThis chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional features offered with theseries. It also describes features that are notnecessarily available in your car, e. g., due tothe selected options or country versions. Thisalso applies to safety-related functions andsystems. The respectively applicable countryprovisions must be observed when using therespective features and systems.

General informationThe navigation system can determine the pre‐cise position of the vehicle with the aid of sat‐ellites, and can reliably guide you to every en‐tered destination.Navigation data are stored in the vehicle andcan be updated from an USB device.

Starting navigation system

InformationWARNINGOperating the integrated information

system and communication devices while driv‐ing can distract from traffic. It is possible tolose control of the vehicle. There is risk of anaccident. Only use the systems or deviceswhen the traffic situation allows. If necessarystop and use the systems and devices whilethe vehicle is stationary.◀

WARNINGThere can be deviations between the

current traffic situation and details of the navi‐gation instructions, e.g. changed streets orroad construction. There is risk of an accident.The respectively-valid traffic rules take prece‐dence.◀

Quick searchGeneral informationDepending on the equipment, points of inter‐est and addresses can be searched for by en‐tering a sequence of letters or in the navigationdata stored in the vehicle.All entries are displayed that include this textstring.It is possible to search by town/city and street.To do this enter a text string for the town/city,then a space and a text string for the streetname.

Destination entry by voiceGeneral information▷ Instructions for the voice activation sys‐

tem, see vehicle Owner's Manual.▷ When making a destination entry by voice,

you can change between voice operationand iDrive.

▷ To have the available voice commandsread out loud: ›Voice commands‹ or ›Help‹.

Saying the entries▷ To enter an address by voice, the system

language must be set to the respectivecountry language.

▷ Complete addresses can be entered in asingle command.

▷ Countries, towns and cities, streets, andintersections can be said as whole wordsor spelled in the language of the system.

▷ Spell the entry if the spoken language andthe language of the system differ.

▷ Say the letters smoothly, and avoid exag‐gerating the pronunciation and insertinglengthy pauses between the letters.

▷ The options available for entering data de‐pend on the navigation data and the coun‐try and language settings.

Entering an address in a command

1. Press button on the steeringwheel.

2. ›Enter destination‹3. Wait for a request from the voice activation

system.4. Say the address in the suggested order.5. Continue making the entry as prompted by

the voice activation system.If necessary, individually name the separatecomponents of the address, e.g., the town/city.

Points of InterestGeneral informationPoints of Interest are points of interest that canbe helpful while driving. Points of Interest, suchas restaurants, hotels, or gas stations, can beadded as destinations. Even with the most cur‐rent navigation data, information regardingparticular individual destinations may havechanged. For instance, certain gas stationsmay not be operating.

General informationOnline alternative routes are online transmittedto the vehicle.Information on traffic disruptions and forecastsare taken into account for this.

Symbol indicates online alternative routes.

Activate/deactivate online alternativeroutesIf the dynamic destination guidance has beenactivated along with the online alternativeroutes, available online alternative routes areautomatically adopted in the destination guid‐ance.

Displaying list of route sectionsWhen destination guidance is activated, a listof route sections can be displayed. The dis‐tance to be driven per route section is dis‐played.If needed, gas station recommendations aredisplayed as well.

The conceptWith active destination guidance, the routedisplayed on the map can be adjusted man‐ually. To do this, drag the route using a mark‐ing point on the route, the so-called routemagnet, in the desired direction.

General informationIf destination guidance is active, destinationguidance hints can be displayed in the mapview for the respective maneuvering points ofthe current route.In the case of multi-lane roads, lane informa‐tion may indicate the recommended lanes.

Destination guidance hints can also be dis‐played as arrow view in the split screen, referto page 26.

Interactive mapGeneral informationUsing the interactive map, different informationcan be called up for any point on the map andsettings can be adjusted.

Realtime traffic information, RTTIIn some countries, realtime traffic information,RTTI, is transmitted by services that can bebooked additionally, and which can then beused and displayed instead of the traffic bulle‐tins from the radio stations.With the realtime traffic information, the loca‐tions of traffic obstructions are provided ingreater, more precise detail. Traffic conditionson roads other than the highways, e.g., secon‐dary roads and urban streets are also recordedand displayed for a wide area. Recommendeddetours can be calculated more accurately onthe basis of this information. The risk of be‐coming caught in a further traffic obstructionon detour routes is reduced. If applicable, sev‐eral detour recommendations or additional in‐formation may be offered.When traveling in countries where realtimetraffic information is not available, the traffic

CDs and DVDsCAUTIONWith use of non-compatible CD sizes,

the CD can get jammed and it may not be pos‐sible to pull it out again. Labels applied afterthe fact can loosen during playback. There isrisk of property damage.▷ Do not use any CDs with labels applied af‐

ter the fact.▷ Only use round CDs with a standard diam‐

eter of 4.7 in/12 cm and do not play backany CDs with adapters, e.g. single CDs.

▷ Do not use any combined CD/DVDs, e. g.DVD Plus.◀

General malfunctions▷ CD/DVD changers and players have been

optimized for performance in vehicles. Insome instances they may be more sensi‐tive to faulty CDs/DVDs than stationary de‐vices would be.

▷ If a CD/DVD cannot be played, first checkwhether it has been inserted correctly.

HumidityHigh levels of humidity can lead to condensa‐tion on the CD/DVD or the laser's scan lens,and temporarily prevent playback.

Malfunctions involving individual CDs/DVDsIf malfunctions occur only with particular CDs/DVDs, this can be due to one of the followingcauses:

Home-recorded CDs/DVDs▷ Possible reasons for malfunctions with

home-recorded CDs/DVDs are inconsis‐tent data creation or recording processes,or poor quality or old age of the blank CD/DVD.

▷ Only label CDs/DVDs on the upper sidewith a pen intended for this purpose.

Damage▷ Avoid fingerprints, dust, scratches and

moisture.▷ Store CDs/DVDs in a sleeve.▷ Do not subject CDs/DVDs to temperatures

over 122 ℉/50 ℃, high humidity or directsunlight.

CDs/DVDs with copy protectionCDs/DVDs are often provided with a copy pro‐tection feature by the manufacturer. This canmean that some CDs/DVDs cannot be playedor can only be played to a limited extent.

The conceptRear entertainment allows passengers in therear to access entertainment sources regard‐less of the driver's selection. Two screens, dif‐ferent media connections, and a BluRay driveare available in the rear for this purpose. Thesound output is done optionally via head‐phones or the vehicle's loudspeakers.Different entertainment sources can be se‐lected on the screens.Rear entertainment also provides access tomany iDrive functions.Some entertainment sources can be operatedat the same time in the front and rear seat. Accepting a call while speaking toanother partyIf a second call comes in during an ongoingcall, a call waiting signal sounds where appro‐priate.

From the mobile phone to the hands-free systemCalls that were begun outside of the Bluetoothrange of the vehicle can be continued on thehands-free system with operating readinessswitched on, as long as the remote control is inthe vehicle.Depending on the mobile phone, the systemautomatically switches to the hands-free sys‐tem.If the system does not switch over automati‐cally, follow the instructions on the display ofthe mobile phone. Operationcan be performed via the app.Functions must first be activated in the Con‐nectedDrive customer portal before they canbe used. An active BMW ConnectedDrive con‐tract is required.Alternatively, the functions can also be exe‐cuted via the ConnectedDrive Call Center.The operating instructions for the My BMWRemote app can be found on the Connected‐Drive customer portal or at bmwusa.com.
