WEDNESDAY, MAY 20NHA-HFMA Golf TournamentThe Mid-Year Golf Tournament is a fun way to kick off the Mid-Year Meeting. On Wednesday, May 20, enjoy the beautiful Meadowlark Hills Golf Course and the camaraderie of health care professionals, affiliate members and members of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) Nebraska Chapter. Registration begins at 11:00 a.m. with shotgun start at 11:45 a.m. After the tournament, relax during the post-tournament awards reception at the clubhouse.

Golfers will be provided with two drink tickets while on the course and a cash bar will be available at the clubhouse during the awards reception. Please note on the registration form if you are registering for the golf tournament. The registration fee includes 18 holes of golf, cart, box lunch and participation in the awards reception.

Meadowlark Hills Golf Course Meadowlark Hills Golf Course was built in 1993 and is operated by the City of Kearney. The course is a championship 18 hole layout that plays to a par 71 for men and a par 72 for women. The 18 hole course is laid out on the bluffs over the Platte River valley. The majestic view from the clubhouse is spectacular! On the course, water challenges you on several holes and the numerous sand bunkers are strategically placed to keep your ball from venturing too far from your target.

Closing the Knowing-Doing Gap in Health Care Craig Deao, senior executive, Studer Group

This session will describe and share evidence-based practices for closing the “knowing-doing gap” in health care. Six frogs are sitting on a lily pad, and one decides to jump. How many frogs are left on the lily pad? You may assume the answer is five. Actually, it’s six. Why? Because deciding to jump and jumping are two completely different things! Back in 2000, Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert Sutton published a book called The Knowing-Doing Gap. It pinpoints a challenge faced by organizations in all industries, including health care. We work really hard to figure out what we need to do, yet we fail to implement what we learn in the process.

In 2001, the Institute of Medicine published a report called Crossing the Quality Chasm. This report pointed out that it takes an average of 17 years for new (scientifically generated) knowledge to be translated into practice. That’s a long time between knowing and doing — and we can no longer afford to wait 17 years. Most health care organizations really want to leap off that lily pad — especially with value-based purchasing making it even more critical that we drastically improve clinical quality (and keep improving it). So, why don’t we follow through? Why are there so many frogs with good intentions? The gap between knowing what we need to do and actually doing it is almost always a foundational issue.

Many health care institutions do not realize that they may have affirmative action obligations which impose upon it stringent record keeping requirements, as well as require it to prepare Affirmative Action Plans. In 2013 and 2014, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) continued its efforts to bring health care institutions under its jurisdiction and appears to be succeeding. This multi-part program for hospital human resource professionals will cover, in part, recent developments in health care institutions’ obligations to prepare Affirmative Action Plans. It will also cover the myriad of new Executive Orders and Final Rules issued by the OFCCP in 2014, and discuss their effect on health care institutions. By the end of the day’s sessions, HR professionals will know the basics of affirmative action jurisdiction and compliance and be able to best position themselves to comply with the OFCCP’s aggressive rule-making.

Session 2: Your Data Is Valuable and It’s Never Been Easier For the Bad Guys to Access ItSpeakers: Buzz Hillestad - Helix Security

This session will explore why fraudsters and evil hackers are after your data, how they trick you into giving it to them, and things you can do to help protect your organization from the cyber threat. This session will take you through an explanation of who is after your data, what data they are after, how they monetize the data once they have it and all their dirty little tricks. Attendees will leave the session knowing the cyber threat and how to fight it.

It has clearly been the Critical Access Hospital (CAH) program that set in motion better health care delivery in America. So many communities have revisited their mission, vision, goals and objectives in the context of an “improved service delivery model” (linked to CAH licensure status). The evolution of this program has opened the door to “needs based efforts,” automatically reduced bed capacity, severed physically linked adjacencies to nursing homes, and expanded into broader based community efforts for senior care and hospice and greenhouse design nationwide. Facilities that were previously located in the “wrong part of town” have been re-developed to offer better access, more efficient service delivery, and overall more efficient infrastructure and design quality that meets and exceeds consumer expectations. City/county joint ventures are occurring to permit utility sharing, FQHC partnerships and regional partnerships with secondary and tertiary care partners.

This session will embrace these winning success stories and outline ways to grow further, faster and more effectively in the future. Outpatient care and alternative delivery models will evolve for many communities in the future. The next generation of the CAH program will be exciting, innovative and cost effective. The session will illustrate the added value of CAH efforts and speak to participants in creative and positive terms.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIESAngela Beck is the executive director of perioperative & procedural based services at Nebraska Medicine. A registered nurse for over 17 years with training in Lean Six Sigma, Ms. Beck has worked in many facets in health care, including direct patient care, ambulatory care and practice management, performance improvement and hospital operations. Ms. Beck received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Grand Valley State University and master’s degree in health care administration from Bellevue University.

Gary Braley has a lifetime of experience as an IT developer, consultant and educator. He began his career in the aerospace industry and went on to work as a developer and independent consultant assisting over a hundred health care organizations in the selection and implementation of their medical information systems. He now writes and speaks on the Mobile Revolution and other technology subjects for audiences of all types across the country.

Craig Deao has been a member of the senior executive team for Studer Group since 2006. He is also a sought-after national expert and speaker on topics related to leadership, accountability, patient experience, quality and safety. He has served as faculty for the Institute of Healthcare Improvement, the American College of Healthcare Executives, and dozens of health care systems across the U.S. and Canada. Mr. Deao has been published in Trustee magazine and he co-authored the 2011 article of the year in the Journal of the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy. He served as one of Studer Group’s Baldrige journey and now spends most weeks inside health care organizations working with boards, medical staffs and executives to help architect their own journeys to excellence.

Ryan Donohue is a thought leader in the realm of health care consumerism. His mission is to inspire and persuade hospital and health system leaders to embrace and engage the health care consumer. Over the past decade, he has conducted extensive research on the efforts of consumerism on the U.S. health care industry. Mr. Donohue is currently the corporate director of program development with National Research Corporation, the largest surveyor of health care consumers in the U.S. Through his research and subsequent findings, he has authored several publications on the topics of health care consumerism, brand strategy and effective marketing tactics, including his most recent work, Considering the Customer: Understanding & Influencing Healthcare’s Newest Change Agent, published by The Governance Institute. He also shares his message across the country via national, regional and local health care and hospital associations. He has worked with clients such as Mayo Clinic, Baylor Scott & White, Tenet, Trinity Health, Middlesex Hospital, and other organizations big and small, to understand and influence consumer decision making in health care.

James G. Easter, Jr., FAAMA, is founder and principal of Easter Healthcare Consulting (EHC) based in Nashville, Tennessee. His prior roles were senior vice president of HFR Design, president and founder of EMhc, vice president of Quorum/HCA and director of facility planning for UT/MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. With 35 years of health care planning, design and construction experience, he has been involved in all types of health care projects from Cairo, Egypt, to Mexico City and in 37 states in the U.S. He has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in architecture from Virginia Tech. He was an adjunct professor in the graduate school and has lectured at the University of Tennessee Belmont Massey School, Vanderbilt Engineering, Kent State University and Texas A&M, to mention a few. He was chairman of AAMA, is an associate member of the AIA and serves on the AIA Academy Journal Review Committee. He is past chairman of the Board of the American Academy of Medical Administrators, holding Diplomate and Fellow. Bob Edmondson, MPH, FACHE, has more than 20 years of experience in guiding physicians, hospitals and health systems through strategy, integration and business development. Mr. Edmondson currently serves as chief strategy officer for Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, Maryland. His experience includes executive leadership with health care systems and professional service firms, including Endeavor Health Group, Catholic Healthcare Partners, and Ernst and Young.

Julie Fedderson, MD, FACP, MBA, is a board-certified internal medicine physician with over 10 years of experience as an academic hospitalist in Omaha, Nebraska. She completed an advanced training program in health care delivery improvement with Dr. Brent James from Intermountain Health Care in Salt Lake City, Utah and recently finished her MBA in health care administration at the University of Colorado Business School. She currently is the chief quality and outcomes officer for Nebraska Medicine, part of an innovative new structure that provides solutions to collaborate information management, clinical support and cultural evolution with guidance from the front-line staff. Dr. Fedderson has focused on working to engage clinicians in a vision of quality improvement and patient safety through empowering them to embrace data, decision support and consistency in practice.

Paul Frigoli, PhD(c), CPHQ, CSSBB, is a quality and Lean consultant with a strong background in health care quality. Having been an RN since 1980, he has worked in various specialties in different locations across the country and Latin America, mostly in hospital management and administration positions in critical care, emergency medicine and staff development. He currently serves as the chief clinical officer of Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Mr. Frigoli is a certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality, and is certified in ROI by The ROI Institute. His special interest is in helping rural hospitals implement Lean methodology into their processes. Mr. Frigoli is the president of the Wisconsin Association for Healthcare Quality.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIESDavid Glaser, J.D., helps clinics, hospitals and other health entities negotiate the maze of health care regulations, providing advice about strategy, reimbursement and compliance. He is a shareholder in Fredrikson & Byron’s Health Care Group and co-founded its Health Care Fraud & Compliance Group. He has considerable experience in health care regulation and litigation, including voluntary disclosures, criminal and civil fraud investigations, overpayments and reimbursement disputes. His goal is to explain the government’s enforcement position and to analyze whether this position is supported by the law or represents government overreaching. Mr. Glaser is a frequent guest on RACmonitor.com’s “Monitor Mondays.” You may read his blog in Orthopedics Today. Mr. Glaser received a bachelor’s degree in public policy with honors in 1988 from the University of Chicago and a Juris Doctor cum laude in 1992 from the University of Michigan Law School. He was admitted to the Minnesota Bar in 1992, Iowa Bar in 1998 and the Federal District Court in 1992. Mr. Glaser’s honors include Phi Beta Kappa and National Merit Scholar.

Eric “Buzz” Hillestad, senior information security consultant for Helix Security, received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems degree from Dakota State University. He has over 15 years of experience in information technology operations and more than 10 years of experience in information security operations. He was trained in information security by SANS Institute and was formerly employed by a major health system.

Patrick Leahy is director of health care planning, research and innovation, Holland Basham Architects in Omaha, Nebraska. He is also a senior health care designer/planner, consultant, facilitator and senior project manager leading projects, as well as the health care group. Mr. Leahy is recognized for his expertise in consulting health care clients in developing solutions for the current and future health care business, delivery and facility challenges. He is a national expert in developing architectural master plans and planning for complex health care institutions. He has over 20 years professional experience planning, designing and serving as project leader for more than 200 health care projects or master plans throughout the U.S. and abroad. Project size has ranged from $1M to $600M. He and his team are committed to using evidence and the Lean 3P process to improve health care outcomes. He has been working the Lean 3P planning process for health care projects from the programming phase through mid-design development phase utilizing rapid prototyping and simulations. Mr. Leahy is a Certified Charrette Planner and Facilitator, and works with clients to arrange the right team of specialists for the each specific health care business initiative.

Kelli P. Lieurance, J.D., is a partner with Baird Holm LLP who focuses on labor and employment law compliance, assisting employers with proactive, rather than just defensive, compliance efforts. Her practical approach not only offers clients a realistic view of their legal obligations, but also assists clients in implementing such obligations in a way that best suits their business needs. Ms. Lieurance received her Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas School of Law in 2005, where she was awarded the Justice Lloyd Kagey Leadership Award. While in law school she served as senior publications editor for the Kansas Journal of Law: Public Policy and was a Student Bar Association officer and class president. She received a bachelor of arts in English degree with honors and distinction from the University of Kansas in 2002. She advises and trains clients on general day-to-day employment issues, including those related to the FLSA, FMLA and other federal and state regulations. She also advises and defends employers on EEO matters. Prior to joining the firm, she served as a legal intern for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Officer of Federal Operations, in Washington, D.C. She develops and has successfully defended many Affirmative Action Programs before the OFCCP and counsels clients on all aspects of Affirmative Action compliance.

Jeff Prochazka, MBA, is the director of strategic planning for Methodist Health System. Serving in this capacity, his primary responsibility is the development of strategic and tactical plans for the System and its affiliates. Additional duties have included running the systems Community Health Needs Assessments, new business development, facilities master planning and financial analysis. Mr. Prochazka is an experienced speaker and delivers presentations across the region about health care reform and changes to the health care industry. His audiences have included clinicians, professional and service organizations, Methodist employees, and multiple levels of college students. He led many software implementations with an emphasis on process re-engineering throughout clinical and administrative functional areas. Serving large corporations in construction, telecommunications and banking industries, he was an expert in supply chain and enterprise resource planning software solutions. He earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Nebraska and master’s degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a graduate minor in management information systems.

Jerry Wordekemper, MHA, has over 15 years of health care experience in a variety of different settings. He has led long-term care and assisted living facilities, was COO and now serves as the CEO/president of Franciscan Care Services. Mr. Wordekemper leads an integrated health system that includes St. Francis Memorial Hospital, six medical clinics and senior care in West Point, Nebraska and the surrounding area. He received his bachelor’s degree from Wayne State College in business administration and his master’s degree in health care administration from Bellevue University.

ACHE face-to-face education credit (formerly called Category I) This program has been developed and is presented locally by Heartland Healthcare Executive Group (HHEG). This program has been approved for 1.5 hours of ACHE face-to-face education credit.

ACHE qualified education credit (formerly called Category II)

The Nebraska Hospital Association Research and Educational Foundation is authorized to award 7.5 hours pre-approved ACHE Qualified Education credits (non-ACHE) in total that is required for advancement or recertification in ACHE.
