Doctors never suspected father of three Harley Melhopt could have bowel cancer at 24-years-old. Riley, 8, Naiah, 3, Harley, baby Laken, 1, with fiancee Sam at their Dallington home.
Harley Melhopt and his partnerSam Thompson have three beauti-ful children – Riley, 8, Naiah, 3,and Laken who turned one thisweek.
The couple, who have beentogether for ten years, plan tomarry at Sam’s family home in afew months.
‘‘We’ve always wanted to getmarried,’’ Sam said.
‘‘Only a few months left to doit. I couldn’t have done it without
Sam,’’ Harley said.Today, Harley is unable to
work, sleep or eat and is in con-stant pain.
‘‘I’m getting really bad, especially these last few weeks...It’s just getting worse and worse.
‘‘Everything’s stuffed,’’ he said. From age 15, Harley Melhopt
had been going to the doctor withstomach pains.
‘‘They just told me it was indi-gestion,’’ the 29-year-old father ofthree said.
In 2011, he headed to the
emergency department withexcruciating stomach pain. Hewas rushed into theatre withsuspected appendicitis. Instead, surgeons discovered a largetumour.
Harley was shocked to learn itwas bowel cancer.
‘‘It was already quite big whenthey found it and I was 24 then.’’
He learned the doctors neverconsidered he might have bowelcancer because he was so young.
‘‘It ran in my family too, thebowel cancer. They said to get
tested when I was 25, not 21.’’Ahead lay 12 months of chemo-
therapy. He was about to return towork as a painting apprenticewhen his health deteriorated. Thecancer had spread.
‘‘The doctor gave me three tofive years at the start and it’scoming on four-and-a-half, so he’spretty on.’’
Harley admits it hasn’t beeneasy for partner, Sam, 26.
‘‘I wish we had found out a bitearlier.
‘‘Especially with the kids and
stuff, I thought I’d be around forway longer.’’
Currently on morphine,Harley had been advised to tryCetuximab, a treatment forcolorectal cancer tumours, whichcosts more than $10,000 a month.
A friend’s mother started aGivealittle page to help fundraisefor his treatment. So far, morethan $10,000 has been given bymore than 120 people.
Harley is concerned for hisfamily. ‘‘I just want them to behappy,’’ he said.

Media vita in mortesumus - in the midst oflife, we are in death. It’s been a week of it.
While we celebrate new arrivalsand birthdays, we also mourn forlosses.
A colleague welcomed his firstdaughter on Thursday, anotherhis first granddaughter Saturday.
One of my reporters is settingoff on maternity leave to welcomenumber three and there areanother four impending arrivalswithin eyeshot of my desk. It’sdefinitely the season for it, and it’svery exciting.
However, we lost a colleagueon Saturday night as well. Alovely man who has been in thebusiness for more years than Icare to think about. He left us allvery suddenly, and his loss is feltaround the company.
He was far too young, it was fartoo sudden and it’s taking a fairbit to get our heads around.
Take your wins, take yourlosses, keep putting one foot infront of the other, and live a goodlife.

Battle looms in new liquor store bidANNA PRICE
Tony Simons at
the bottle store
area in the
building leased
to Work and
Income
Riccarton
An application for a bottle store ina building leased to Work andIncome, Riccarton has run intovigorous opposition.
PM Liquors Ltd has applied tothe District Licensing Committeeto open The Liquor Shop, at 76Riccarton Rd.
Riccarton Bush KilmarnockResidents’ Association chair TonySimons said it beggared beliefthat another liquor outlet could beopened in an area not far from thetroubled Riccarton Bus lounge, ‘‘amagnet for alcohol consumptionevenings and weekends’’.
Its co-siting in the same build-ing as Work and Income wasextraordinary, he said.
’’We don’t believe the councilwould accept a liquor outlet nextto a school, or place a casino nextto Work and Income.’’
The application is also opposedby the Medical Officer of Health.
Police liquor licensing officerJohn Harris confirmed policewould ‘‘definitely’’ look at itslocation at the Work and Incomebuilding.
Density of licensed premises, sensitive sites, community feelingand public objections were takeninto account in any decision tooppose a liquor application.
’’We think the location at Workand Income is probably relevantto make the decision whether ornot to oppose,’’ he said.
The deadline for publicobjections closed this week.
Residents contend that unlikeother bottle stores, the location –between the Riccarton Rd busroute and Christchurch Boys’High School grounds and board-ing hostels – was in easy walkingdistance from the school and close
to the Riccarton Bush residentialarea.
Despite the Christchurch CityCouncil liquor ban, thereappeared to be little or no poli-cing, Simons said.
‘‘Selling beer and spirits soclose adds to the already serioussocial problems being played out
in the area. Residents are fed upcleaning up their streets andproperties every Saturday andSunday morning.’’
Residents argue that the appli-cation is at odds with the city’sproposed Local Alcohol Policythat recommends maximumtrading hours of 9am – 9pm for all
bottle stores and supermarkets,The licence application seeks
to operate 9am – 11pm seven daysa week.
Opponents question itslocation in an area bristling withbars and other licensed premises.

Legal at last thanks to Police and SallysMONIQUE STEELE
Drivers Jacob Burton and mum Katrina Burton celebrate getting their restricted licences. MONIQUE STEELE/FAIRFAX NZ
A mother and son caughtbreaching their learner licencedriving conditions were givenanother shot at getting theirrestricted driver’s licence.
Jacob Burton failed his restric-ted licence drivers test severaltimes and could not afford to sitthe test again.
‘‘It just seemed easier to driveand avoid the police,’’ Jacob said.
His mum Katrina Burton wasnormally driven by her husband, but when he passed away, sheneeded to drive her two-year-old.Like her son, Katrina also failedher $86.60 restricted licence prac-tical test several times and couldnot afford to re-sit it.
‘‘I’d spent $480 trying to get mylicence by myself,’’ she said. ‘‘It’sjust too expensive.’’
Police encouraged the pair tosign up to a Salvation Army andpolice-run driving education pro-gramme called Operation Gradu-ate and avoid paying their fines.
A key part of the service wasthe community mentor drivingprogramme based in Aranui, inwhich young learner drivers werepaired with police officers fordriving lessons.
Last week, half way throughthe 12-week programme, Katrinaand Jacob sat their restrictedlicences and passed.
‘‘I thought I would never getmy licence, it’s amazing,’’ Katrina
said. ‘‘I’m so grateful, and I’mproud of my son, and we’re proudof each other.’’
The pair were among 18 Christ-church learner drivers to gradu-ate the driving programme lastThursday, 10 of whom also cel-ebrated passing their restricted.
Senior sergeant Kelly Larsen
said the programme tackledbarriers for some young peoplepassing their driving tests, includ-ing having no access to fulllicence drivers or a safe, regis-tered car, lack of confidence andfinancial instability.
‘‘It’s about the bigger pictureimpacts for people, not just the
licence. It’s about creating safe, responsible drivers... and gettingthese people across the line,’’Larsen said.
Programme coordinator KeranTsering said the programmehelped young drivers get theirrestricted, many of whom hadbeen previously driving illegally.
‘‘There’s nothing like that daywhen they get that piece ofpaper,’’ Tsering said.
‘‘It’s an opportunity toreinforce behaviours we want, rather than punish thebehaviours we don’t want,’’ saidofficer and driving mentor PeterEvans.

Breaking the jail cyclefor prisoner’s childrenMONIQUE STEELE
A Christchurch mother says anorganisation which supportsfamilies of prisoners changedher and her children’s lives for-ever.
Pillars came into singlemother-of-two Vanessa Smith’slife 10 years ago, after her part-ner went to prison.
Smith received three years ofone-on-one parenting supportand her 12-year-old son waspaired up with a Pillars mentor.
‘‘I wasn’t a good parent... Itwas a rough few years, butPillars supported us throughthat.
‘‘Pillars not only gave my lifeback, they gave my children amore positive future,’’ she said.
Smith now volunteers forPillars.
The Smiths are one of thou-sands of Kiwi families to receivehelp from families-of-prisoners
support group, Pillars.Pillars founder Verna
McFelin said after her husbandwas imprisoned, she realisedthe lack of support for prisoner’sfamilies and the stigma attachedto having a loved one in jail.
‘‘There’s over 20,000 childrenin New Zealand with a parent inprison right now.
‘‘They’re nine times morelikely to end up in prison thanany other child, so our service isvital, we’re breaking that cycle,to keep them out of prison.
‘‘We don’t want these chil-dren to be our future prisoners,’’she said.
More than $17,000 was raisedat a Pillars fundraiser breakfaston Friday, attended by morethan 160 Christchurch businesspeople at the Redwood Hotel’sSequoia 88 restaurant.
Councillor Raf Manji spokeat the breakfast of his time as aPillars mentor. Eight years ago,
Manji began mentoring a 9-year-old boy named Ted* who wasliving with his grandmother, ashis mother had addiction issuesand was in and out of prison, and his step dad was in prison.
Manji said for kids like Ted,their choices in life were lim-ited.
‘‘We spent four yearstogether and we had the mostincredible time.’’
Years later, Manji is still intouch with his now 17-year-oldmentee. ‘‘It’s a fantastic pro-gramme... [And] the pay off forus as a community is huge.’’
McFelin said the organis-ation was always needing morementors – male role models, inparticular.
‘‘Twenty children in Christ-church are waiting right nowfor a mentor... It’s $3000 a yearfor a one child’s sponsorship.’’

City remembers Hungarian UprisingMICK WHITTLE
‘‘But the hoped-forassistance from theWest never arrived –instead, the Russiantanks rolled in.’’Zalan Kemeny
Zalan Kemeny in Christchurch for the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Uprising with the symbol of the revolt, a holed Hungarian tricolour flag. , MICK WHITTLE
Zalan Kemeny is too young toremember the events thatconvulsed his home countryexactly 60 years ago this Sunday.
But he is currently in Christ-church to help tell the stories ofthe ‘56ers’ who escaped Commu-nist Hungary and found refuge atthe bottom of the world.
Kemeny is being sponsored byhis government to spend sixmonths in New Zealand to helpsupport the Hungarian com-munity and organise the 60thanniversary commemoration ofthe Hungarian Uprising, one ofthe pivotal events of the decades-long Cold War.
A commemoration on Sundayat the Hungarian Hall, Hardy St,New Brighton, will mark thatdefining moment with theunveiling of a ‘Kopjafa’ – a tra-ditional wooden memorial pole –specially carved for the occasion.
Guests will include Christ-church Mayor Lianne Dalziel, theHungarian Ambassador to NewZealand Laszlo Zsolt Szabo andthe families of the refugees of1956.
On October 23 1956,Hungarians rose up against theirCommunist rulers. But the hoped-for assistance from the Westnever arrived – instead, theRussian tanks rolled in.
In a few short weeks, the Upris-ing had been ruthlessly crushed, and 200,000 refugees had fled thecountry. One thousand of thoseended up in New Zealand, withseveral hundred in Christchurchand around the South Island.
By Kemeny’s account, the 1956
revolution began when the secretpolice killed protesters at peacefulmass demonstrations againstSoviet rule. After a few days offighting, an independent state ofHungary was declared.
Freedom lasted barely a weekbefore Soviet tanks and troopscounter-attacked. By November
11, with over 2000 dead and manymore thousands captured, theUprising was over. Hundreds ofpeople were later executed, anddiscussion of the events wassuppressed.
‘‘For 33 years it was officiallyknown as the ‘Anti-Revolution’,’’Kemeny said.
The story will be told in aphotographic exhibit andinformation..Also displayed willbe the symbol of the short-livedUprising - the red, white andgreen Hungarian flag with a holewhere the hated Soviet Hammerand Sickle emblem had beenremoved.

HARBOUR DREDGE
An application for resource consent to extend theexisting shipping channel in Lyttelton Harbour willbe publicly notified in a fewweeks. EnvironmentCanterbury confirmed it would act on a request byLyttelton Port of Christchurch. The natural depth ofthe port is five to sevenmetres, but successivedredging over the years has created a shippingchannel with a depth of 12.5m. The port companywants to lengthen the navigation channel by about6.5 km, widen it by 20m and increase its depth by5m to 6m for large vessels. The project representsa $120million investment in the port’s viability.
The ghost of Christmas pastTOBY SALLIS
I Love Christmas is closing down due to challenges it’s faced getting suitable premises since the
earthquakes. STACY SQUIRES/FAIRFAX
The eve before a long good night hasarrived for decoration outlet I LoveChristmas, which is holding a closingdown sale brought on by post-earthquakepressures.
Faced with high rents in the centralcity’s new buildings or the challenge ofmarketing from a different location inthe suburbs each year, owner Sue Free-man has chosen to wind down the10-year-old business.
In doing so, I Love Christmas joins theranks of small businesses out-priced in acity awash with new construction butlacking an affordable commercial centreon which they can piggyback their trade.
‘‘Prior to the earthquakes there wasalways some building that was emptythat you could get a short-term lease on,’’Freeman said.
‘‘Now people would rather wait forlong-term tenants. You don’t find thequirky little shop up High St or theboutique store down Victoria St.’’
Jane Gregg, director of Life in VacantSpaces, which aims to get entrepreneursand artists back into central Christ-church, said the rents needed fordevelopers to recoup construction costswere shutting many smaller operatorsout of the inner city.
It was a matter of concern widelyrecognised by planners but one for whichno solution was on the horizon, she said.
‘‘At the end of the day, it asks the land-owner to take a loss.
‘‘We need to unlock that thinkingabout who’s coming to the city and who’sgoing to bring them in, and it’s going to
be those little boutique shops.‘‘We’ll kind of lack the sparkle of a city
that’s got different levels, or layers, ofenterprise.’’
Since the earthquakes, malls wereexpensive and picky about their tenants,Freeman said.
This year, the grand hurrah is beingheld at house she owns in Ilam. A show-room laden with all things sparkly andsnowy has nine weeks to be cleared;
bring your haggling skills and a smile.Luxury Christmas trees, little moving
Santas, porcelain houses and arrays oflights and baubles create a facade of goodcheer over a difficult time.
Come December 26, I Love Christmaswill fade away for good, leaving a cur-rently uncertain future for Freeman, who is taking the loss in her stride.
‘‘All good things must come to anend,’’ she said.

Gardening
Time is ripe to open those seed packetsLYNDA HALLINAN
This column is adapted from theweekly e-zine, get growing, fromNew Zealand Gardenermagazine. For gardening advice delivered toyour inbox every Friday, sign up forGet Growing at: getgrowing.co.nz
START SOWING DWARF &
RUNNER BEANS DIRECTBeans are so quick to germinate –once the soil starts to warm up,they sprout in 7-10 days – that it’sa waste of money to buy seedlingsin punnets as you can buy
a packet of seed for the sameamount and enjoy several repeatsowings throughout the season.
If possible, always sow yourbeans direct as they grow rapidlyfrom the get-go, rather thanhaving their growth checked byroot disturbance whentransplanted. Having said that, ifyou have major issues with slugs, snails or birds attacking yourseedlings, you can start them offin trays and then transplant whenthey are well established.Otherwise they can pop theirheads up, only to be muncheddown.
Beans do well in most soiltypes and need no specialfertiliser or care. Dig in someslow-release fertiliser prior toplanting or feed with yourfavourite liquid plant food. In
sandy soils, mulch to retainmoisture in summer (otherwiseyou can end up with drought-stressed plants and dry pods). Sowdwarf beans every 4-6 weeks fromnow until January.
SOW QUIRKY COURGETTES
THIS SEASONWhy not experiment withheirloom zucchini as well as thestock-standard green and yellowvarieties this spring? Sow theItalian striped ‘Cocozelle’, ribbed‘Costata Romanesco’ (one of myfavourites for firm, rather thanwatery flesh), lime-dipped yellow‘Zephyr’ and long, curly‘Rampicante’. The speckled ball-shaped summer squash ‘Ronde deNice’ (pictured) tastes the same asa courgette when picked young, too. All from Kings Seeds.
PLANT HERBS TO PIMP UP
YOUR SALAD GREENSI know it’s warm enough to plantannual herbs when my mintmakes its return after winter, prompting early evening gardenraids for fresh flavours for oursalad bowl. As well as mint, I
grow perennial herbs such asgarlic chives, oregano, sage, thyme and rosemary, but comespring it’s time to add dill, fennel, chervil, coriander and curly andItalian parsley to that line up.
It only takes a handful of freshherbs to transform a bowl ofshredded lettuce, or an omeletteor frittata, and I find that herbsgive me hope while I’m waitingfor my vegetable garden to hit itsstride in late spring. It’s nice tohave something to eat (aside from
asparagus and globe artichokes). Most herbs have simple needs:
full sun, free-draining soil andmoisture while gettingestablished. Basil and mint needmore water than their otherMediterranean cousins, andchervil takes more shade thanmost, Dill and Florence fennelprefer cool roots, while thyme isthe best for hot, dry gardens.Watch sage in very wet soil as it’sliable to rot.
One last thing: it’s not warmenough yet to sow basil outdoors,so give that another month.
GET READY TO TRANSPLANT
TOMATOESIf you’re itching to get yourtomatoes planted, you’re notalone. Tomato plants seem toappear in garden centres earlierand earlier each year (August!),but unless you have a glasshouse, there’s nothing to be gained byintroducing seedlings to the greatoutdoors too soon. Not only arethey frost-tender, tomatoes arevery sensitive to chilly springnights, which is why it’s a goodidea to wait until Labour
Weekend to transplant.Prepare the soil now by hoeing
out any weeds and digging ingeneral garden fertiliser. Youngseedlings need nitrogen forhealthy leaf growth early in theseason, and potassium for fruitinglater in the season, so feed withpotassium-rich tomato food afterthe first flower trusses appear.
Make sure you’ve got a goodsupply of stakes, as these shouldgo in at the same time as theplants.

Rangiora A&P Showcelebrates 150 yearsJONATHAN LEASK

150-year celebration of the Rangiora Show. PHOTO: JONATHAN LEASK/FAIRFAX NZ
The Rangiora Show celebrates150 years with a special two-dayevent this weekend.
The fourth oldest show in theSouth Island, the Northern A&PAssociation is holding its 145thshow on Saturday, and to cel-ebrate the 150 years since theinaugural show in 1866 they areholding a special day of cel-ebration on Sunday, both at theRangiora Showgrounds.
To commemorate 150 years, sheep and equestrian eventshave been granted royal statusfrom the Royal AgriculturalSociety this year, with winnersto receive special medals.
‘‘The sheep section hasdoubled in size because of it, andthe horse section has over 2000entries,’’ president Jeffrey Milessaid.
With the size of equestrianentries, the events get underwaya day earlier – from 8am onFriday – and will be all donebefore the grand parade at2.30pm on Saturday.
Miles said that for 150 yearsthe event has been bringingpeople together, farmers andtownies alike.
‘‘The area has had a lot ofchange to its outlay, from ruralto residential but the interest inthe show remains strong.
‘‘All you need is an interestin one part of the show.’’
There are plenty of parts tochoose from.
Horse, cattle, and all mannerof animals; sheep dog trials, shearing, wood chopping, flowers, home and craft, danc-ing.
Miles said that entries are upin most categories for the bigoccasion.
This years show will featurethe Topp Twins, in some incar-nation, as the special guestswith two shows – 10.30am and1.45pm – but the duo will also befound wandering the grounds, mingling with the crowds.
With the addition ofSunday’s Day of Celebration
this year, show secretaryDebbie Cameron said the com-mittee opted to drop the Fridaynight carnival – part of thefestivities since 2004 – as run-ning three days would havebeen ‘‘too much for a volunteercommittee’’.
With the business of theshow dealt with, the Day of Cel-ebration on Sunday will be amore relaxed family fun daywith a vintage theme, featuringhistoric displays harking backto the shows of old.
The Westpac Rescue Helicop-ter will be touching down andjoined by other emergency ser-vice staff.

First orca of the season spied in Akaroa
Orca, though sometimes known as killer whales, are in fact the largest of the dolphin family. New Zealand is home to an estimated 150–200 individual orca. SUPPLIED
Black Cat Cruises staff spotted thefirst orca of the season in AkaroaHarbour this week, a monthearlier than the first spotting lastyear.
Black Cat Cruises Sales & Mar-keting Manager Natasha Lombartsaid that although technicallythere is no orca season in NewZealand, Black Cat Cruises have afew orca sightings each year andthey tend to happen in the spring.
‘‘Most people don’t know that, with the exception of humanbeings, orca are the most widelydistributed mammal on earth,’’Lombart said.
‘‘The pod of orca our team sawin the harbour comprised of amother and her calf, one largemale, two juveniles and possiblyanother male. Females and malesdiffer in length, with males beinglonger and bulkier than females.Females have smaller, morecurved dorsal fins, and smallerflippers.’’
The first spotting comes on theback of confirmation from TripAdvisor and booking agentViatour that Black Cat Cruisesare not included in a ban, recentlyannounced by TripAdvisor.
The online reviewer declared itwould stop promoting tours thatfail to meet animal welfareguidelines, particularly thoseinvolving ‘‘physical contact withcaptive wild animals orendangered species’’.
‘‘As a certified SMART
(Sustainable Marine MammalActions in Recreation and Tour-ism) and eco-tourism operator, weapplaud Trip Advisor’s move.
Black Cat Cruises were never
included in Trip Advisor’s ‘‘notouching of wild animals’’ policy, whereby it will no longer selltickets to attractions wheretravellers come into physical con-
tact with captive, wild orendangered animals.
‘‘We already comply with theirenvironmental regulations’’,Lombart said.
‘‘Unlike many overseasoperators, tours in New Zealanddo not allow people to hold ontothe dolphins, and nor shouldthey.’’

Learning to loseour learned fearsJOSHUA VAN BERKEL
Last weekend my son turned five.So for three hours on Saturday
morning our house became thebackdrop for some sort of crossbetween Armageddon and Lord ofthe Flies as we facilitated (orattempted to) what my wifeassured me would be ‘‘a smallparty’’, but was what I can onlydescribe as World War IIIperpetuated by terrorists thinlydisguised as five-year-old boys.
If you haven’t hosted a partyfor a horde of five-year-old boysbefore, you’ll have no idea whatI’m talking about, but if you have,I apologise for the PTSD you’recurrently experiencing.
Once the clean up was finishedand the dust had settled, and thenuclear fallout had reached safelevels, I was taking a welldeserved rest in the sun when aballoon that I didn’t know wasbehind the couch popped.
It all sounds fairly innocuous, and in hindsight I don’t think itwas any worse than a regularballoon popping, but to me, in thatmoment, it was the loudest noise I
had ever heard.From a horizontal position I
managed to simultaneouslykarate chop the air with botharms and legs and levitatecompletely off the couch. Let’sjust say it’s a good thing therewere no more terrorists around tohear my opinion on balloons andthoughts on some of theiralternative uses.
Here’s an interesting fact –psychologists believe that we’reonly born with two fears. The fearof falling, and the fear of loudnoises.
I don’t care how brave youthink you are, a balloon poppingbehind the couch will sendanyone into minor cardiac arrest, and we’ve all had that horriblefalling sensation just before wedrift off to sleep. You know theone – when you’re probably themost relaxed you’ve ever beenand then your brain short circuitsand panics that you’re falling toyour death.
That response to those twofears is hard wired into us –there’s nothing we can do tochange it, or them. But every
other fear that exists, fear ofpublic speaking, fear of flying, fear of open spaces, fear of closedspaces, fear of heights, fear ofclowns, fear of peanut buttergetting stuck to the roof of yourmouth (google it – it’s real) – is alearned fear.
That means that whateveryou’re afraid of that restricts youfrom something or limits your lifeexperience. Unless it’s fear of
falling or loud noises it’s a learned
fear. Somewhere, somehow, forsome reason, you’ve learned to beafraid of that thing. That means, ifyou want to, you can unlearn thatfear.
You can go on a journey toremove that fear from yourpsyche, and it doesn’t have toimpact your life anymore. Gettingto the root of a fear and thendealing with it appropriately is a
fairly involved process. But for now I just wanted to
place a thought in front of you. What are you afraid of? How isthat limiting your life?
It doesn’t have to, if you don’twant it to.

Following more than a year ofpropagating, planting, pruningand potting, the biennial Swanna-noa Plant Sale is just two weeksaway.
The event is a majorfundraiser for Swannanoa Schooland alternates each year with thefamous school fair.
Jo Dobson, co ordinator of theschool’s plant sale committee, said so much goes on behind thescenes leading up to this event.
‘‘We are just a group of mumswho meet once a week on aThursday, sometimes for just acouple of hours, sometimes for awhole day depending on whatneeds to be done.
‘‘Some people have come intothis not knowing a thing aboutplants and have gained somegreat skills. It’s also about catch-ing up, making friendships andhaving some laughs.’’
Dobson said this year in par-ticular is a little bitter-sweet.
‘‘This is our seventh plant saleand some of the team, who havebeen here since the very first one, will be leaving as their last chil-dren finish up at the school thisyear. It will be really sad to seethem go.’’
The plant sale, which is wellknown all over Canterbury, attracts thousands of people look-ing to bag a bargain.
‘‘Last year we opened the gates
at 10am, but we had people queu-ing to get in from 9am with thequeue several hundred metreslong by the time the gatesopened,’’ Dobson said.
She said it’s the quality of theplants as well as the variety andprice which attracts people.
‘‘We have more than 15,000
plants and 200 trees. We havehedging varieties, peonies, natives, perennials, vegetableplants and much more. All atgreat prices – too cheap, I’m told.’’
Dobson said most of the plantsare sourced locally from cuttingsand propagated by the plant com-mittee for the sale. She said this
means they are hardened for localconditions.
‘‘We have also had great sup-port from a number of nurseriesand landscape supply shops.’’
The money raised from theplant sale will go towards outdoorupgrades at Swannanoa School.

Kyle Warren, Chieftain for theHororata Highland Games 2016,is something of a piping rockstar. Born in Scotland, heemmigrated to Australia at theend of 2014. Warren more recentlyrecorded pipes on the DisneyPixar Oscar winning movie‘Brave’.
‘‘I have been to many High-land Games around the worldand am honoured to have beeninvited to be Chieftain at Horo-rata,’’ Kyle said.
Warren has made a careerout of piping and is one of themost sort after piping tutorsaround the world; currentlyteaching at the prestigious

‘‘I believe this year the Horo-rata Highland Games has lookedfor ways to challenge andinspire the Pipe Bands. Being
that the event is the first in theNew Zealand piping season, it isa great time for bands to branchout and try new initiatives,’’Warren said.
This year the Hororata High-land Games has introduced anew Quartet Band competition,in which groups of fourmusicians with bagpipes andother acoustic instruments per-form.
‘‘I will be judging theQuartets on tone, playing, pres-entation of performed piece, butabove all else, the entertainmentvalue of the performance. Thiscompetition will offer a differentperspective to spectators onwhat can be performed with thebagpipes,’’ Warren said.

Best writer in a millionEDUCATION
Mette van Pallandt won the gold at an prestigious writing competition.
A Rangi Ruru Girls’ Schoolstudent has whipped a million-odd entries in a prestigiouswriting competition to take outa gold medal in her section.
Mette van Pallandt wasplaced first in the year 10category in the New ZealandUniversity of New South WalesInternational Competitions andAssessments for Schools (ICAS)challenge which attracted980,000 entries.
Some 514 students from Aust-ralia and 100 from New Zealandand the Pacific region wereawarded medals for their ‘‘out-standing’’ achievement.
Mette’s winning submissionrecounted a rather frighteningand unconventional game ofhide and seek, one that maymake readers think twice aboutclimbing into a wardrobe again.
Rangi Ruru’s head of EnglishFaculty Erin Fitzpatrick hailedthe award as a noteworthyachievement for Mette and for
her school.‘‘To be placed first out of all
year 10 participants from acrossNew Zealand and the Pacificregion is significant,’’Fitzpatrick said.
‘‘The piece she wrote is soevocative that it places thereader right there with Sam in
that dark space, being hunted.’’She said she was ‘‘totally
absorbed’’ reading Mette’swork.
Unable to attend the nationalawards ceremony at Te Papa,Wellington, Mette was pres-ented with her gold medal in aschool assembly last week.

Can’t shop for presents? We don’t buy it.From now on – that is, on October 20and during the days leading up toChristmas – the veil of stressenshrouds all of us who choose todelay our gift-shopping programme. Can’t do it yet, we tell ourselves -
and anyone else who pretends to beinterested. Don’t know what they wantyet. That, of course, is true – and we
won’t know either unless we take itupon ourselves to find out. Well, here’ssomething we do know. This littlepantomime was enacted last year, theyear before that and, if memory choseto be co-operative, the year beforethat, too.We also know the outcome, don’t
we? We charged through departmentstores looking wildly from shelf toshelf and from one trestle table toanother, pleading with "somethingsuitable" to reveal itself. And when"suitable" proved defiantly elusive, wesnatched for anything that could bejustified in the name of desperationand declared "it’ll have to do."So, OK folks, let’s change the
strategy this year. What do you say?Shall we start doing the thinking
tomorrow – that’s right October 21 –and consider the recipients with loveand with tenderness and withconsideration, so that when theyunwrap their present they will knowwe put thought into the selection of it.Why not make a list of those to
whom you are giving gifts and, besideeach name, write down some of theirknown interests? With that in hand, itis easier to match them to an itemwhen you see it in a store.Time also gives you scope to do
retail roving at your leisure instead ofbeing entangled in that stress veil.Another advantage of making an
early start to the great shoppingexpedition is that many stores bring innew stock in anticipation of the high-demand Christmas celebration. Theprice of new goods is likely to behigher and many shops have sales tomake space for their new acquisitions. If you are alert to the possibilities, here is where you cash in.The "hallelujah" advantage,
however, of shopping early is that youavoid the shopping crush thatintensifies as every day passes in theChristmas lead-up.

Dogs and their owners fromaround New Zealand will be putthrough their paces in Rakaia thisweekend.

This year the event isorganised by zone four, whichcovers from Ashburton to thevery top of the South Island, withRakaia chosen as the host town.

Lousy script derails so-so pot boiler
Even the talented
Emily Blunt can’t
save The Girl on
the Train.
Review
TheGirl on theTrain (R16)Directed byTateTaylorStarring EmilyBlunt, Luke Evans,RebeccaFerguson, HaleyBennett112mins★★
Rushed to the screen to capitaliseon the success of Paula Hawkins’2015 source novel, The Girl OnThe Train appears to have beenwritten on one, juddering to itsdestination faster than the speedof sense.
Tormented by the picture-perfect lives she glimpses duringher morning commute – includingher ex-husband Justin Therouxand his new wife RebeccaFerguson – alcoholic Emily Bluntfinds herself embroiled in amissing persons case whennaughty nanny Haley Bennet goesmissing.
Anonymously directed by TateTaylor (The Help), Girl hasproblems from the off.Transplanted to New York fromLondon, the milieu never reallyconvinces.
The female characters, whether hot-mess, home-wreckeror hussy, are all pretty and sad;the males (including Luke Evansand Edgar Ramirez) brooding andblandly interchangeable.
It’s like an alternate universeFriends: ‘‘The One Where TheyMove To The Suburbs And StartBoffing Each Other’’, perhaps.Although adapted by ErinCressida Wilson, who wrote theexcellent Secretary, the script isawful, with cloth-eared dialogue(‘‘I could never find the words todescribe how I felt when I readthat email…’’ says Blunt, withsome difficulty) and a fondness
for showing and telling us everytiny detail.
‘‘I tend to smile when I’mnervous,’’ says Bennet, smilingnervously.
New mom Ferguson’scomplaints about the trials of
farmers’ markets, meanwhile, will raise titters among all but themost cosseted viewers.
Entertainingly bad to beginwith – think Desperate Housewivesmeets 50 Shades Of Grey – iteventually settles down into the
kind of so-so pot boiler thatemploys someone else to boil thepots.
If you’re looking for anairplane read for the eyes, itmight pass muster. If not, lookaway now. – Matt Glasby

play imaginatively and express themselves creatively.
It helps them develop as natural, confident learners
as they prepare for school.”

Piano a perfect fit for Youth OrchestraPATRICK SHEPHERD
The Canterbury
Youth Orchestra
proved their
mettle at the
Piano last week.
SUPPLIED
OUR PLACE. CHRISTCHURCH
YOUTH ORCHESTRA.❚ Helen Renaud (conductor).Gemma Stewart (karanga),Zara Ballara (soprano) andAngus Simmons (baritone).❚ 15 October, The Piano.Well, that answers that question –does The Piano’s auditorium fit asymphony orchestra?
The answer is a resounding‘‘yes’’. Admittedly, while theChristchurch Youth Orchestra isa full symphony orchestra, it isn’ta whoppingly large one and theacoustics suited it well.
The balance was generallygood and even in a ‘‘crash-bang-wallop’’ piece like Gareth Farr’sTe Papa, the sound was full andrich but never overpowering.
Conductor Helen Renaud’sdirection ensured cohesionthroughout and was clear andunfussy. Renaud selected a good-sized programme with plenty ofvariation that showed off the dif-ferent aspects of the group withseparate works for strings andwind, and the addition of vocalsoloists for the Farr.
Yes, there was the occasionalreminder that these were not pro-fessional players but the overallimpression was of high quality toa great depth within theensemble.
Vocalists Gemma Stewart,Zara Ballara and Angus Simmons
did a wonderful job in the Farr, showing real commitment in theface of the orchestral onslaughtthat welled up behind them. It wasinevitable that occasionally theywould be obscured but the scorealmost invites that. Thepercussionists were on top formhere.
If Te Papa was about the spec-tacle, then Mendelssohn’s
Hebrides Overture was aboutsubtlety and nuance, which wegot, and was great forhighlighting the more delicatecolours in the orchestra’s playing.
Britten’s Gloriana SymphonicSuite may not have been the audi-ence favourite but it was my pick. This was the ‘‘test piece’’ of thenight, Britten’s music sharing oneof Mozart’s traits of being way
harder than it sounds. Coming atthe end of the concert, this pushedthe stamina.
The brass playing was veryassured and Ashleigh Mowbraydid an excellent job of the oboesolo in The Lute Song.
I loved the inclusion ofSibelius’ Romance for StringOrchestra and Persichetti’sDivertimento for Band. The
strings are the nucleus of anyorchestra and it was great to hearthem on their own in this passion-ate and intense work.
The Divertimento showcasedthe woodwind, brass and per-cussion in a good mix of dances, marches and almost hummablemelodies, with two well-takensolos from french horn and trum-pet.

OUTSTANDING YOUNG
MUSICIANS
❚ Presented by Concerts forChristchurch FoundationTrust.❚ Elisabeth Harris (mezzo-soprano) and AnnaMaksymova (piano).❚ October 13, The Piano.I remember hearing mezzosoprano Elisabeth Harris in 2013when she was preparing to headoff to Wellington to study andhere we are, 3 years later, listening to this wonderful young
singer as she prepares to go toNew York next year to continueher postgraduate studies. I wasimpressed by her back then andthat has only grown with timeand, although it is a well-worncliche, she really does light up thestage.
The bit of theatre opening theconcert worked well, singing atthe back of the room and gradu-ally coming down the stairs to thestage, not least because it utilisedthe magnificent acoustics in ThePiano’s auditorium. This was anintelligent touch and in all hersongs Harris was engaging and
animated, bringing something ofthe operatic role or textual storyto her interpretation. The choicesof repertoire were interesting as,for the most part, they were notthe tried-and- true but venturedcomfortably further afield.
Harris’ voice is tremendouslyrich right across her substantialrange; it is as good and strongdown low as it is up top and shemoves between the two with con-summate ease. The three operaticofferings by Bizet, Saint-Saensand Gounod all shone, Bizet’s(L’amour est un oiseau rebelle)for its coquettish brilliance, Saint-
Saens’ Amour! viens aider mafaiblesse! for its declamatorypower and Gounod’s O ma lyreimmortelle for the intensity ofexpression and knock-out finalnote. In her stage presence she istotally present and exudes energy.
The Britten songs were greatchoices, too, the sustained melodyCradle Song a nice foil for thequirkier Cabaret Songs later on.Finishing on Sexy Lady, a won-derful take on the lot of mezzos,Harris showed a self-deprecatinghumour that will serve her well inthe music business!
Throughout Anna Maksymova
accompanied with treat sensi-tivity and there was noticeablechemistry between the twoperformers. Maksymova hadsome exacting stuff to cope withbut she did an outstanding jobsupporting Harris.

North Canty river birds get safe havensMATTHEW SALMONS
Nick Ledgard(left), CourtneyHamblin andAndrew Arpsinspecting acleared islands’birdlife. SUPPLIED
A conservation group hopescleared islands in North Canter-bury’s Ashley/Rakahuri riverwill help regenerate the area andconserve native bird species.
The Ashley/RakahuriRivercare Group (ARRG) put for-ward the proposal for eightshingle and stone islands in theriver to Environment Canter-bury’s Waimakariri Zone Com-mittee (WZC) in May.
ARRG member Geoff Swailessaid that the group ‘‘greatlyappreciated’’ WZC’s involvement.
‘‘After we approached them inMay, ECan acted very quickly. We’re very grateful for it ... theyfacilitated the whole operation.’’
Work was completed by theend of August using a digger toshift weeds and stones, whileARRG members assessed the areafor the best locations.
The area where the islandswere – an 18km stretch ofriverbed – spanned from the con-fluence of the Okuku river to theSH1 bridge.
The islands were plain shingleand stone, which the birds pre-ferred for nesting.
’’It’s just a trial. Let’s do it, let’sdo it for a year and let’s see whathappens ... The ultimate goal is toregenerate the river from themess that it’s in now,’’ Swailessaid.
The group would monitor the
nesting sites until next year whenit would provide a report to WZC.
The islands would allownesting for ngutupare (wrybill),tuturiwhatu (banded dotterel),poaka (pied stilt), torea(oystercatcher), black fronted ternand black billed gulls.
Although ARRG had not seenany large scale nesting yet, someblack fronted terns had been seenaggressively defending a potentialnesting site and black billed gulls
had been seen scouting thelocation.
Previously, birds were forcedto nest near the river’s banks dueto weed cover on existing islands, which heightened the risks offlooding and predators, such ashedgehogs.
ARRG had been trapping thearea for 15 years Swailes said, butthe ‘‘explosive growth’’ of weedson the water’s edge and in springsmeant food sources for birds such
as the wrybill were scarce.Swailes said weed growth on
the water’s edge had led to arounda 50 per cent drop in availablefood sources for some birds, as itprevented access to the smallinsects they fed on.
The Ashley-Rakahuri was fedby rainfall from the foothills andhad relatively low flow rates, meaning weeds had more time toestablish.
Swailes said some of the lupin
bushes on the islands had reachedheights of six foot.
Four wheel driving wasanother major issue for thenesting birds.
ARRG and WZC had workedwith the Canterbury 4WD Club toprovide education and promote aban between September andFebruary, around the times whenbirds would be nesting on theislands. Signage had also beeninstalled in the area.

NZ rodeo season starts this weekendERIN TASKER
Methven Rodeo president Tom Plunkett with some of the horses brought down from the high country for the Labour
Weekend event. ERIN TASKER/FAIRFAX NZ
‘‘If you go outthinking you'regoing to get buckedoff, chances are youwill be.’’
Tom Plunkett’s just had a casttaken off his arm after breaking itwhen he was bucked off a horse atthe Mt Isa Rodeo in Australia sixweeks ago.
But he’s about to get anothercast put on so that he can get backon a horse and do it all again atLabour weekend when thenational rodeo season kicks off.
The Winchester Rodeo’s onSaturday, followed by the Meth-ven Rodeo on Sunday, wherePlunkett will be one of around 300competitors from around thecountry taking part.
Plunkett is the Methven Rodeopresident, and for the past fiveyears he’s been a regular competi-tor on the national rodeo circuit,in the open bareback category. Heloves it, even though it has led to afew injuries.
It takes a bit to keep him down. He’s had head injuries, brokenarms and a broken foot, but inNovember last year he sufferedhis most horrific injury, and ithad nothing to do with rodeo orhorses.
‘‘I took last year off because Iblew my thumb off with a shot-gun. I was shooting pigeons andthe gun back fired,’’ Plunkett said.
It was his riding hand, and for-tunately his thumb was saved andit’s pretty much back to what itwas before, but if it hadn’t beenPlunkett said he simply would
have changed riding hands. Itwouldn’t have kept him awayfrom the sport he loved.
The arm he broke six weeksago was his free arm while riding,so it wouldn’t impact on his com-peting, but having the cast putback on would just give it someadded protection in a fall.
Mt Isa was his first time ridingsince he represented New Zealandin Sydney last year, but he’d beenkeeping his fitness and techniqueup through the mechanical horsehe has at home, on the PuddingHill farm he leases.
‘‘The fitter you are the fasteryou recover,’’ Plunkett said.
He said 80 per cent of a success-ful rodeo ride was mental.
‘‘If you go out thinking you’regoing to get bucked off, chancesare you will be,’’ he said.
The horses Plunkett and hisfellow bareback riders will be try-ing to stay on top of are alreadymaking themselves at home in apaddock next to the rodeogrounds. Every year they’rebrought down from high countrystations, and each of them has aname.
‘‘They probably live the bestlife a horse could live. They comedown from the stations for eightseconds’ work then they got backup to the stations,’’ Plunkett said.
Rodeos often came under firefrom people who said their sportwas animal cruelty, but Plunkettsaid the wellbeing of theiranimals was a priority.
He would be one of about 300competitors from all over thecountry taking part in the Meth-ven Rodeo across the differentcategories, including bareback, rope and tie, saddle bronc, bullriding, team roping and barrellracing.
‘‘It’s a big weekend because allthe cowboys from the North
Island fly down because there’stwo in a row,’’ Plunkett said.
Methven’s rodeo starts at 1pmand the organising committeehave worked hard to transform itinto a family friendly event inrecent years. There’s a glass banand a no BYO rule.
‘‘We want to put on a show thateveryone will enjoy,’’ he said.

Lowering yourblood pressure
Lowering your
blood pressure
Ask Dr Libby
Email your questions for Dr Libby [email protected] note, only a selection ofquestions can be answered.
Your healthWITH AUTHOR AND NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMIST DR LIBBY
Is there a natural way to lowerblood pressure? Thanks,Margaret.
HiMargaret. High blood pressureis commonly lifestyle-related and forsome people, lifestyle changes canhave a positive impact. Weight loss, your consumption of alcohol (ifapplicable) can be a great place tostart, alongwith howmuch caffeineyou consume. Caffeine leads thebody tomake adrenalin, a stresshormone, and for some, anexcessive amount can lead to highblood pressure.
A diet filled with plenty ofvegetables and leafy greens can alsomake a difference. Studies haveshown that drinking beetroot juiceled to significant improvements inpeople with high blood pressure.Beetroots contain nitrates, which tohelp regulate blood pressure as wellas provide better oxygen delivery tothe tissues.
High blood pressure can also bea result of stress, so in addition tomakingmore nourishing food
choices, addressing sources of stressand including stress-reducingpractices in our daily or weeklyroutine can also be important.
Explore your perception ofpressure and urgency – do youapply the same level to approachingyour inbox as you dowhen youneed to slam on the brakes in the carto avoid an accident? Have youmadewhat you do each day full ofpressure and urgency? If so, youmight like to rethink your prioritiesand save it for when you really needit.
Meditation has also been shownto help with the regulation of stress-related high blood pressure. Trymeditating early in themorning –perhaps before others in yourhousehold get up – as often this isthemost peaceful time of the day.
Theway you breathe has apowerful impact on yourbiochemistry, predominantly viayour nervous system. One of theonly ways that science has proven todisengage the body’s stress
response is through diaphragmaticbreathing so a daily breathingexercise can be highly beneficial.Focus onmaking your exhalationlonger than your inhalation. Youmight like to place a hand on yourbelly to help you connect yourbreath to this area.
Other stress-relieving practicesinclude tai chi, qi gong, restorative orgentle yoga practices. Investigatingif you have sleep apnoea is alsoimportant as this too can be a causeof high blood pressure.
Why would my four year oldalways be thirsty? She drinks alot of water but never seemssatisfied? Is she hydrated orshould I be worried? Thanks,Amanda.
Hi Amanda. Firstly, it is importantthat you visit your GP and have yourdaughter tested for type-1 diabetes.
What you are describing can be asymptomof this and it is essentialthis is investigated.
If she does not have type-1diabetes, it would be useful to have
your GP thoroughly investigate herhealth and do some tests, includingher blood pressure, as this too canimpact thirst.
I have seen both low and highblood pressure promote thirst. Shemay needmoreminerals in her dietsuch asmagnesium, potassium and/or sodiumwhich are obtained fromeating a wide variety of foods, particularly vegetables and fruit.
Two pieces of fruit a day isadequate and five servings ofvegetables. Finding out via a visit toyour GP if her thirst is excessive andif amedical condition is causing thishowever, is essential.

Cigs v Vapesv Fresh Air
‘‘Imagine adding$2500 a year toyour KiwiSaveraccount instead ofsmoking it!’’
These pretty little bottles are e-liquids. The numbers tell you how much nicotine they contain. CHRIS SKELTON/FAIRFAX NZ
GOLDEN RULES
❚ Smoking is a waste ofmoney❚ Smokers prosper by becomingvapers❚ Vapers prosper by quitting vaping
ROB
STOCK
MONEY MATTERS
In just two years Nell Rice saved$5000 by switching from smokingconventional cigarettes to vaping.
Vaping is the term used forpuffing away on e-cigarettes,which aren’t cigarettes at all. They are electronic devices thatdeliver nicotine in a vapour.
There’s no smoke withe-cigarettes, so vapers aren’texposed to the toxins that cause 95per cent of smoking-relateddiseases.
Vaping offers big health gains, but most people I know who’vequit smoking were motivated toby money.
There is nothing like a fag-addiction to burn your waythrough cash.
Imagine adding $2500 a year toyour KiwiSaver account insteadof smoking it!
Of course, if you aren’t going todie before your time fromsmoking-induced cancer, you’llneed a decent retirement nest-egg.
Rice works for Cosmic, thecountry’s largest e-cigaretteretailer, so she’s clearly biased in
favour of the product.Having read Public Health
England’s report on e-cigarettes, Inow share her belief thatconverting New Zealand’s600,000-odd smokers to vaperswould be good for both theirhealth, and their wallets.
I asked Rice to help me cost outthe savings that can be made byswitching from smoking tovaping. Making the switchrequires a capital investment.
The ‘‘bare minimum’’ start upcost is $45 for the cheapeste-cigarette device, which includesa battery, charger, and a bottle ofe-liquid. That’s the cost of a coupleof packets of low-end fags.
It’s not everybody’s ideal set-up, says Rice, but it’s a start. Abetter e-cigarette device can bebought in a month or so using themoney saved by not having to buycigarettes any more.
A $160-a-month ‘‘light’’ (twopacks a week) smoking habit, canbe replaced by a roughly$38-a-month vaping habit, Riceestimates.
A ‘‘moderate’’ (four packs a
week) $320-a-month smokinghabit, can be replaced by a$102-a-month vaping habit.
Heavy smokers are likely toneed larger, more robuste-cigarettes, and their initialcapital investment will be higher.
Yearly savings, on Rice’sestimates, would go from $1500 forlight smokers, to $5000 for heavysmokers.
E-cigarettes don’t appeal toeveryone, but New Zealand maysoon see ‘‘heat not burn’’ tobaccodevices, which, I am told, arecloser in taste to smoking.
They are the baby of BigTobacco, but they do seem to be alot healthier than conventionalcigarettes.
I called Countdown to see if itplans to stock e-cigarettes ande-liquid when they become fullylegal, hopefully later this year. It
wouldn’t tell me, but it couldhardly carry on selling fags andnot offer e-cigarettes ande-liquids, could it? Supermarketsstocking e-ciggies and e-juicewould really send themmainstream.
But while smokers can save bybecoming vapers, vapers can saveby stopping vaping, switchingfirst from nicotine-heavy e-liquidsto nicotine-light ones, and finallyto nicotine-free e-liquids.
Then they can bin theire-cigarettes because vaping is awaste of money. Fresh air isbetter. And it’s free.

New firm boosts EQC claims
Sheralee Kingi visits a home inWainoni for which CalmManagement Ltd successfully lobbied EQC to accept ahigher repair bill.
Homeowners concerned theirproperties have had repaircosts low-balled by theEarthquake Commission cannow draw support from a newcompany with expert industrybacking, which aims to gethomes "over cap" and movingforward in the repair process.
Calm Management Ltdlaunched in September with aview to reassessing propertieswhere owners believe EQCcostings are inadequate torestore homes to "as new"condition – a requirement laidout in an April 2016 courtruling.
Using constructionguidelines rather thanestimates that would gethomes back to only their "pre-existing" conditionimmediately before theearthquakes, CalmManagement can help showrepair costs to be aboveprevious estimates.
The company’s first successwas getting a Wainoniproperty owned by BridgetBiss over the EQC limit of$100,000, which moves aclaim on to a private insurer.
Initial assessments had putthe cost of damage at$67,000. Calm Managementshowed repairs would likelyrun over $260,000.
Bridget says the result wasa huge relief.
"I’ve fought a hopelessbattle alone for almost sixyears while my family home
rotted,’’ she says. ‘‘Two weekswith Calm and it was over."
Initial assessments are free, and if the company believes aclaim should be over the EQCcap, services are provided ona "no win, no fee" basis.
Advocacy work and detailedreports for properties likely toremain under cap are alsoavailable.
For over-cap claims, a setfee of $5000 plus GST isapplied rather than apercentage of the total claim.
The set fee eliminates anyincentive for claims to beexaggerated – somethingCalm Management co-ownerSheralee Kingi says can slowthe settlement process, createill will with insurers and raise
owners’ hopes unrealistically."We’re not aiming to hit
EQC over the head. Ifanything, it’s to make it easierfor them. We can say, ’Look, here’s one that’s slippedthrough the net.’"
In cases where re-levellingis required, costs can oftenshoot over the $100,000mark, Sheralee says.
If repairs are not madewithin construction guidelinesof "as new", homeownersmight have difficultyaccessing full insurance in thefuture, which could impact onsale prices, she adds.
To discuss a claim, phoneCalm Management Ltd on 03338 6445. Visit calmgt.co.nzfor more information.

Ellesmere Speedway’s redevelopment
Ellesmere Motor Racing Club committee member Jeremy Lambie checks out the recently redeveloped track.
HELENA O'NEILL
It’s been a mammoth undertak-ing, but Ellesmere Speedway islooking better than ever.
Over the past 14 months, thetrack owned and operated by theEllesmere Motor Racing Club hasbeen completely overhauled.
Ellesmere Motor Racing Clubsecretary Bridget Roxburgh saidthe redevelopment project startedin June last year.
‘‘It’s cost us about $200,000 butit’s easily a multi-million dollarredevelopment because all thelabour was voluntary.’’
She said the club gratefullyreceived some grants and helpfrom many businesses andindividuals to get the upgradedone.
‘‘We had fantastic supportfrom the New Zealand Com-munity Trust and Pub Charity, and we started off with $75,000ourselves.’’
The redevelopment was a hugevolunteer effort, with thousandsof hours of work carried out bydedicated people. The clay track is400m long and 22m wide, andthousands of cubit metres of soilwas needed to pack down thetrack and build up itssurroundings including the spec-tator bank. Half of the slabpartitions are from the former
Timaru Speedway, which gavethe club an incentive to getstarted on the project.
The old control tower waspulled down and a new one com-pleted by September.
‘‘The club has been here for 30years, this has been a huge projectfor us. A labour of love though.’’
Club president Rob Roxburghsaid it was an amazing feat to seethe project come together.
‘‘The most incredible result ofit all was that the club to date hasnot spent a cent on any labourinvolved in this project.’’
The mammoth undertakinghas exhausted the club’s fundsand its members are keen to getunderway with a new season.Drivers tested out the new trackon September 25, with the honourof being the first driver to hit thenew wall going to Jamie Duff.
The new track will open thisSunday with the start of a newracing season. The meet will fea-ture V8 modifieds, modifiedsprints, sprint cars, six-cylindersprints, six shooters, TQs,midgets, 1/4 midgets, productionsaloons, and motocross.
Gates open at noon with racingset to start at 1pm. If postponed, the opening race day will be heldon Monday, October 24. Entry is$15 for adults, $10 for Gold Cardholders, 15 and under free.

Etheredge on the
chrage for South
Canterbury in
the Heartland
Championship.
A two-hour trek to training everyThursday has been a small priceto pay for the chance at HeartlandChampionship glory. FormerKaiapoi turned Christchurchflanker Matt Etheredge answereda late call up to play for SouthCanterbury in this year’s Heart-land Championship.
‘‘I got a phone call late in thepiece after their usual seven madehimself unavailable. It’s goodfooty and I’m really enjoying it,’’Etheredge said.
Christchurch teammatesKieran Coll, Nick Annear, CamBailey, and Etheredge car pooldown each Thursday, along withLinwood’s Zac Southen andKalavini Leatigaga.
‘‘We’ve now got to take twocars down but it’s a good bunch.’’
After seeing off fierce rivalsMid Canterbury 14-0 to claim theHanan Shield, South Canterburysealed a home semi-final againstBuller. With prop Sam Cottam inthe Mid Canterbury line up, therewere five players from the Christ-church club in action, while MidCanterbury also featured JaredPercival (HSOB) and TroyMangan (New Brighton).
South Canterbury have lostjust once, against perennialdefending champions Wanganui32-30 in week two, which was the29-year-old Etheredge’s debut.
‘‘We should have beaten them
up there, and to be honest I ammore worried about getting pastBuller this week.’’
South Canterbury made it tothe final last year, only to lose toWanganui at home. If they see offBuller they should get the chanceto return the favour – withWanganui hosting Wairarapa
Bush in the other semi-final.‘‘I had to watch the first game
against Buller as I was waiting onmy clearance. ‘‘I’m classed as areturning overseas player, andhave been registered atHarlequins, which makes me eli-gible for the Heartland XV.’’
A Meads Cup win and Heart-
land XV selection would cap a bigyear for Etheredge, who started anew business venture with part-ner, Tactix netballer GemmaHazeldine, opening Pita Pit inRangiora. The pair will start a big-ger venture next year, expectingtheir first born in March.
Etheredge played 80-odd games
for Kaiapoi before shifting intoChristchurch in 2011, but a poss-ible return to Kaiapoi is on thecards next year.
‘‘Anything is possible at thisstage. There is a lot happening outhere for me and I would alwayslove to; it’s just whether the timeis right,’’ Etheredge said.

‘‘The nationals arealways exciting, always a bigchallenge for theriders.’’Jono Keegan
New Zealand’s quad bike elite willconverge in Amberley for thebiggest event on their calendarnext weekend.
The 2016 New Zealand ATV (allterrain vehicle) Motocross Cham-pionships are to be held nearAmberley this weekend, withorganisers hoping to avoid theunpleasant racing conditions thatstruck the nationals last year inTaranaki.
The weather in 2015 forced theevent to be abbreviated as theriders were enveloped in chokingdust on day one and then had tocontend with clinging mud on daytwo, although this certainlyhelped sort the men from theboys.
‘‘The nationals are alwaysexciting, always a big challengefor the riders. They always put ona great show down there and it’llbe a fantastic weekend,’’Motorcycling New Zealand ATVcommissioner Jono Keegan said.
Keegan’s two sons, Scott andCamo, will be expected to takecentre stage regardless of whatconditions are to be faced. Thebrothers finished first and secondoverall last season, but they’reaware they can taking nothing forgranted this time around.
Several local riders areexpected to be among the manyleading title contenders at Amber-ley, not least of all multi-national
champion Ian Ffitch, who willwant to de-throne Scott Keegan.
The Keegan’s, Ffitch and NorthCanterbury rider Angus Parishcrossed the Tasman last week totake on the Australian’s at theAustralian ATV MX Champion-ship.
Camo finished fifth and Scottsixth in the premiere open class.Parish, who holds both the Northand South Island titles in his the250 Production class, will be afavourite to take out the nationaltitle on his home track.
While much of the focus at thenationals will go on the premiergrade, the open class racing isalso expected to be intense. Racesare also scheduled for the juniors, women and mini quad riders.
Christchurch’s Greg Grahamand Gary Doig should feature inthe veterans’ class, while Christ-church’s Abby Holliday is one ofthe leading female racers.
The venue is on Lawcocks Rd,Amberley, and will be signpostedfrom the main road. Spectatorentry is free and racing both dayswill begin at about 10am.
