Using simple shapes to create cartoon characters might seem likean obvious choice, but did you know that you could create all sorts of images using only a circle and a rectangle? In this tutorial, I will show you a few alternatives using the samecartoon character made from one simple circle and one basicrectangle. You will see that with just two shapes as simple as these ones, you can create a wide variety of cartoon designs that are amusing andvisually appealing.

Large HeadIn this example, our littlegirl is created using proportions that are ratherusual for a cartoon character.Indeed, the head is slightly larger for a fun comical effect.

Normal BodyThis is a normal body with all proportions beingrelatively close to a realhuman being. Nothingfancy, nothing tooexaggerated.

3

Thin bodyAnother fun example ofhow a small modificationcan make a huge change and create a whole newcharacter. Simple, butextremely effective.

Large BodyUsing a large body canalso create a characterthat is visually different.Don’t hesitate to goreally wide to see ifit’s interesting or not.

Head CloserIn this case, the head iscloser to the body. Thisis a good option if youdon’t want to draw theneck or simply feel likemaking a funny image.

Huge HeadGo into extremes by addinga HUGE head to the cartooncharacter. In this case, the fact that the body is so thinalso helps create a morecartoonish image.

Experiment And Have Fun!Any basic shapes can be used to create animals and cartooncharacters. A man can have a triangular head, a rectangular nose oreven a round body. Possibilities are endless. Just be creative and don’t be afraid to experiment using variousshapes, various sizes, various combos and various colors. In thewonderful world of cartoons, there are no rules except the onesyou are willing to create. Simple characters like these ones are fun to create because theydon’t require advanced drawing skills and results can be as fun ascomplex cartoon illustrations. Enjoy! :)

Anything Goes!Of course, many other changes can be done to create a fun character. Inthis case, the head is nowmade from an oval shapeand the body is wider on top.

Same SizesUsing a head that is thesame size as the body canalso create an interestingresult. Look at the imageon the left to see howcool it can be.
