The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) pays a great deal of attention to the welfare of its personnel. Nobody can deny the tremendous efforts KPC exerts in order to empower its manpower, train and qualify them to shoulder the responsibility of developing the oil sector in all fields. In order to promote this policy, the corporation acquired valuable insight from the experiences of other international companies in this domain and established a state-of-the-art center to train and develop industry leadership. The center also aims to train ordinary personnel through various workshops that qualify them to undertake responsibility.

The interest that KPC has in developing its personnel emerges from its deep-rooted belief in manpower as the real resource that Kuwait possesses and as the essential support for all development and progress that Kuwait makes in its oil sector.

Undoubtedly, each individual who belongs to the oil sector realizes well the tangible concern that KPC and its subsidiaries have in this respect. Through holding continuous training courses, workshops and programs, KPC hopes to achieve capabilities and raise standards of the oil sector to the levels of efficiency of international companies.

The corporation is looking forward to further efforts from KPC manpower by applying the experience gained from the various programs and workshops to develop the entire organization and cope with the international changes under prevailing global economic conditions.

Al-Khalid sponsors confab on private sector’s role in development projects and infrastructure

By Al-Assriya Pringing Press

The Kuwait Petroleum Corpora-tion (KPC) took part in sponsoring the 9th conference on the Role of the Private Sector in Infrastructure Projects, which was held under the auspices of HE Deputy Premier for Economic Affairs, the State Minis-ter for Housing Affairs and Devel-opment, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The two-day conference was orga-nized by the Kuwait Commercial Markets Complexes on Sunday May 9, 2010 at the J.W. Marriott Hotel.

The inaugural ceremony involved a number of speakers beginning with the speech, given on behalf of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad, by Mr. Issa Khadadah, General Manager of Investment Affairs and the Pri-vate Sector’s projects.

For his part, the Managing Director (MD) of Governmental, Parliamen-tary, Public and Media Relations at KPC, Sheikh Talal Al-Khalid Al-Sabah, addressed the inaugural ceremony by saying, “One of the

important conditions required to assure success for new develop-ment projects and to move towards real economic growth is to include local and foreign private sec-tor participation in the economy. However, the success of projects implemented through the B.O.T. system depends on an integrated legal framework that should be espoused by the government. The participation of private sector in carrying out infrastructure projects also helps increase the volume of financial investments in various sectors.’’

Al-Khalid further added that KPC shoulders a huge responsibility, as it is responsible for developing the oil resources in the country. In this regard it has approved a number of development projects aimed at reinforcing the status of the oil sec-tor, both locally and internation-ally. Among these projects were those tasked to develop oil fields and petrochemical industries, as well as various refinery projects,

including the Olefins and Aromat-ics Complex, inaugurated by HH the Amir that aim to add value to the Kuwaiti economy, under the increasing international demand for petrochemical products.

Following his speech, Sheikh Talal inaugurated an exhibition that was held on the sideline of the confer-ence and included a number of sponsoring companies that took part in the conference.

It is worth mentioning that the ac-tivities of the second day included three sessions allotted for KPC and its subsidiaries to tackle the private sector’s participation in the oil de-velopment projects. The first ses-sion was headed by Mr. Hashim El-Rifaai, the Managing Director of Planning at KPC and the Chairman and Managing Director of Oil De-velopment Company (ODC), who highlighted the strategic directives of KPC in relation to capital proj-ects. He also shed more light on the mid-term development vision of KPC, which aims at increasing

the production of crude oil and natural gas. The vision also calls for the strengthening of oil reserves and the refining and petrochemi-cal activities as well as developing the marine transport fleet.

He stressed the importance of the private sector in oil industries and its ability to participate effectively in implementing constructional and engineering activities besides sustainable services. “The law of B.O.T., which was approved by the National Assembly, is one of the positive steps that support such projects allotted to push forward the wheel of development in the country in order to achieve the Amiri desire of converting Kuwait into a financial and commercial center regionally and internation-ally,” he added.

Asked about the corporation’s vi-sion about the private sector’s

participation in such activities, El-Rifaai said future plans of KPC aim to give the private sector an oppor-tunity to take part in its projects in order to reinforce its role in acti-vating and sustaining the develop-mental role of the Kuwaiti private sector in the country. Therefore, KPC has allocated a number of plans that are still under study to specify the fields in which the non-governmental sector can take part including petrochemical projects, fertilizers, petroleum exploration field, marine transportation and the fourth refinery project.

For his part, Mr. Sami Fahd Al-Rus-haid, the Chairman and Managing Director of Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), tabled a work paper dur-ing the conference themed “The role of Exploration and Production sector in developing the private sector”. Al-Rushaid expressed his

optimism towards these projects despite the huge challenges faced by the sector.

He further lauded the strong will of the sector’s personnel in devel-oping plans and exerting efforts to push the Kuwaiti economic wheel forward. These efforts, embodied in the development plan, involve numerous ambitious tactics to turn Kuwait into a leading financial and commercial center in the region.

Finally, Mr. Asa’d Al-Sa’ad, the Deputy Managing Director of Mina Al-Ahmadi Refinery at Kuwait Na-tional Petroleum Company (KNPC) submitted a work paper labeled “The program of partnership with local contractors, exporters and manufacturers” in which he un-derscored twenty-eight recom-mendations put forward by KPC to persuade the private sector to take part in governmental projects.

This system emerged from a strategy allotted to provide a healthful environment to maintain the health and safety of people and to serve the good of new projects environmentally.

Regarding efforts put forth by the Kuwaiti oil sector in this domain, Al-Ramadan said KPC and its subsidiaries apply an integrated system aimed at providing a proper and healthful environment. special attention to cement the spirit of unity among its personnel. This attention to increase the family spirit in the corpora-tion varies from time to time and currently I think it is average. While the corpora-tion is really eager to organize such open days to enable each sector’s staff to renew their vigor, in my opinion such social gath-erings are not enough to reinforce the spirit of one family. I think several other steps and matters are needed to achieve this goal, including better communication and dialogue between the administration

Hanan Al-Hashash: Communication between the manager and employee paves the way to achieving goals

The Kuwait Petroleum Cor-poration (KPC) has always allocated programs and ac-tivities aimed at encouraging human resources believing in the significant and substantial role they play in the success achieved by the corporation. The higher administration has approved several activi-ties, including open days that through its glamour and gai-ety add to the employees’ spirits and energize their ac-tivities.

The KPC Newsletter recently interviewed several employ-ees to gauge their interest in such entertainment activi-ties and programs. The first interview was held with Ms. Hanan Al-Hashash, from Le-gal Department, who said, “When I joined KPC nine years ago, I noticed that the higher administration paid

and the employees to realize each others' con-cerns. This will help the administration to un-derstand the difficulties faced by even minor employees and provide effective solutions for the problems they face. In other words, the ad-ministration and personnel should coexist with

each other; such communica-tion will undoubtedly lead to forming one family. This will also enable the higher ad-ministration to easily explain its plans and strategies to the employees and help achieve them efficiently.’’

Fawaz Al-Hajeri: An Open Day for KPC sectors helps to bolster communication among personnel

Haya Al-Khudhair: Employees’ eagerness to participate in these activities shows the importance of such events

11I N T H I S I S S U E

For his part, Mr. Fawaz Al-Hajeri, Information Technology (IT) senior analyst at Planning and Career Development Department, said that the multiple activities organized by KPC in this respect have achieved tangible success. He added the corporation through such ac-tivities managed to relieve work pressures and burdens that personnel bear during their office working hours. These activities not only reinvigorate their energy, but they also bol-ster communication among personnel and their bosses, added Al-Hajeri.

He recommended organizing more open days for all KPC sectors to provide a chance for their staff to communicate with one another.

Meanwhile, Haya Al-Khudiar, from Compen-sation dept., said, “KPC pays a real interest in activities that are aimed to support the one family spirit.” She stressed, that these activi-ties help increase and refresh the personnel’s energies and this is reflected positively in

their work. She believes that open days help the employee meet with his superiors freely in an environment away from the pressures of work. This eliminates any personal bar-rier between them and provides a chance for newly-recruited personnel to meet their col-leagues and chairpersons in a comfortable at-mosphere. She added the employees’ eager-ness to share in such activities is evidence of the importance of such functions.

Eman Al-Doub: Removing barriers between employees and their managers opens up wider horizons for dedication

Furthermore, Eman Al-Doub, Computer Sys-tems Analyst, stressed the higher administra-tion puts manpower on top of its priorities and is keen on holding such activities as it be-lieves that personnel are the cornerstone of progress and development. She pointed out that such activities remove barriers among

employees, and spur them for continued dedication to their work. As a result, the stra-tegic objectives which KPC espouses are suc-cessfully accomplished. She finally suggested conducting such activities more than once a year to fulfill this target.

On the other hand, Mr. Khalid Al-Sumairi, Ac-counts Senior Analyst, affirmed the corpora-tion spares no effort to improve the perfor-mance of its human resources and it always aims to cement the one family spirit among its personnel to eliminate any barriers that result from routine work and responsibilities. He finally said KPC should preferably orga-nize, besides open days, group competitions for memorizing the Holy Qur’an and honor-able Hadeeth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) - his speeches - as this will bolster humanitar-ian and religious ties among KPC personnel.

The Economics and Energy Man-ager of Corporate Strategic De-partment at US ExxonMobil Cor-poration, Mr. Robert Gardner, in response to an invitation from the Kuwait Petroleum Corpora-tion (KPC), gave a lecture about Exxon’s expectations for energy in 2030.

The lecture was held on May 11, 2010 at the auditorium of the oil sector and in the presence of CEO of KPC, Mr. Saad Al-Shuwaib and a number of senior officials, in-cluding Managing Directors, their deputies and managers.

In his keynote speech, Gardner conveyed his pleasure to attend-ees at giving a lecture in one of the most important oil corpora-tions in the world. He indicated that his speech on energy would be different as there are several experienced individuals, among the attendees who are fully aware of oil industries and its various challenges.

Stressing that energy is a very cru-cial requirement in the life of mil-lions of people around the world, and the vein of modern economy, Gardner said the coming phase will witness a tough challenge rep-resented by the need to provide new energy resources to meet the requirements of the growing glob-al population. The demand for en-ergy is expected to increase up to 35 percent by 2030, and the con-sumption of energy in public insti-tutions and transportations is ex-pected to rise to two third of total energy consumption. In general, domestic consumption in homes and automobiles is expected to represent one third of the general demand on energy.

“The need to provide clean re-sources of energy for economic development around the world is another future challenge that has to be met,’’ added Gardner, affirming these clean resources will help control carbon emissions

and keep a clean environment for coming generations. He added that ExxonMobil is committed to applying appropriate solutions to achieve this goal.

He further highlighted the compa-ny’s estimates on the percentage of energy consumption in 2030, by clarifying that electricity con-sumption will represent 40 per-cent of the total demand on en-ergy worldwide.

He went on to say that a coun-try or a city with a population of one million, will need around six million units of energy every sec-ond, the equivalent of more than one thousand barrels of oil per minute or one hundred and fifty tons of coal per hour. Additionally, about 500,000 gallons of petrol will be consumed a day by driving 500,000 cars. Gardner added that this should spur members of OPEC and non-member countries to seek alternates to provide 24 percent of liquefied fuel approximately.

several examples of noted lead-ers and politicians who greatly affected the world such as Nel-son Mandela.

At the end of the lecture, Dixon bid all leaders, chairpersons, managers and every official to have a look at his book themed “Building a Better Business” as it contains plenty of information and suggestions that may change their thinking about themselves.

It is worth mentioning that Dix-on is one of the most significant contemporary intellectuals in career development and is ex-perienced in the field of self-de-veloping. He has also made sev-eral humanitarian and medical contributions and is one of the founders of AIDS International Agency. Add to this, his personal interest in holding awareness campaigns around the world aimed at preventing several dan-gerous and contagious diseases such as AIDS, cancer and HIV.
