Just when you thought you’d seen or heard everything

How a clueless bettor walked off with over $4,600 from mistaken Kentucky Derby wagers.

For all of you who have a Top 5 racetrack story get ready to toss one of those overboard.

On June 2, shortly after noon time at Harrah’s Hoosier Park, I was cashing a ticket. I was the first on line as the lady opened and she had to call for some money. So, I gladly stepped off to the left and waited.

Most people in the first 20-30 minutes are betting and not cashing so it would be a couple of minutes.

A woman steps up to the same window — the only window actually — and fumbles through her pocketbook for a few seconds and comes out with a semi-crumpled handful of a few tickets.

As she’s getting them out, I told her she can always check them in the machine by simply running them through.

“I don’t know how to do that.”

Okay.

She tells the clerk that she was leaving the casino and she remembered she had a couple of tickets that she had bet a while back and wanted to see if anything was good.

I am off to the left waiting. No problem. Then I hear the clerk say, “This one is worth $163.60”.

‘Wait a second,’ I said to myself. ‘That is the win price on Rich Strike. Did she have the Derby winner?’

Next ticket goes through. I forget the exact total, but around $300 — $2 across the board on Rich Strike?

Now I had to say something.

“Wow. Nice picking. Are those tickets from the Kentucky Derby?”

“What’s that?” she said.

‘You know, the big race in Kentucky the first Saturday in May every year.”

“Oh, I don’t know anything about that. I just put these bets in for my girlfriend.”

Oh.

Wait, there was one more ticket. $2 exactas (Now I was looking at the actual ticket as the clerk is a friend of mine). $2 exactas 21-3 and 21-10

$4,101.60 was the next — and last ticket — to go through.

Squealing would be an understatement as to the next sounds I heard. She had no idea these tickets were worth this much — or even good at all. Over $4,600 altogether.

“How did you wind up picking Rich Strike — and the exacta? He wasn’t even IN the race until Friday?”

“Who?”

She didn’t know the horse’s name or the race. She was just reading from the numbers given to her.

I asked her when she bet it?

“I know it was a Saturday because I was off. There were so many people here I bet it and took off.”

Squealing would be an understatement as to the next sounds I heard. She had no idea these tickets were worth this much — or even good at all. Over $4,600 altogether.

Then, I asked about her girlfriends reaction and was curious as to how they came up with the winner.

“She never said anything. I just bet it and that was it.”

“But, wait. What about after the race. There had to be some hootin’ and hollerin’, right?”

“No. As a matter of fact, she hasn’t said a word to me about it at all.”

Really? How on earth could this be? The most improbable winner in our lifetime in the Derby. Was she married to someone named Rich for 21 years? Anything? And on top of all that the exacta, too.

Shaking my head-the lady was about to walk away and left something at the window. Not her money, but a napkin with the numbers on it. I just handed it to her and she was talking to somebody else so I had to wait there a few moments. The napkin was smudged — kind of like when you write down a phone number and have a lemonade next to it that seeps through. I was still holding it and looked again and again. Closer.

The numbers that her friend wrote down were 2-1-3-10. Some liquid had run through and made the 2 and 1 run together. 2-1-3-10 had become 21-3-10 — especially to the non-racetrack person. She didn’t know how rare it was to have a “21” in a race. Had she tried to bet this Thursday or earlier it wouldn’t have gone through.

She misread the 2-1-3-10 to 21-3-10. This explains how her girlfriend was silent for 26 days. Completely.

I had one final question I just had to ask. I would not tell her that it really was 2-1-3-10. That didn’t matter anymore.

“Why didn’t you bet a 21-3-10 trifecta. It was right here on the sheet (Epicenter 2nd #3 Zandon third #10)”?

“What is that?”

Like I said: you just can’t make it up.

Joe Sbrocco began his involvement in harness racing in 1970. He wasn’t nearly as involved then as an owner as he is today. His father in law Bob Cole was a long time Ohio trainer. Joe became an occasional trainer/driver. He also called races at the Ohio fairs at matinee races and his wife Sandy charted them.

The money in Ohio fair racing wasn’t that good at the time. Sbrocco fiddled around mostly with lower quality horses. Thankfully, he had another job as the owner of a title company in Cleveland. The company was growing. He determined that he didn’t have enough time to spend with racing to do his company justice. In 1975, he took a respite from harness racing. As his company grew more successful, the itch for harness racing returned. He returned to the sport in 1985. In a few losing years he turned the corner and has been on an upward spiral ever since.

Today, he is the owner of 58 horses in training with 14 trainers. They are comprised of 38 2-year-olds, 19 3-year-olds and one 4-year-old. He is a 25 per cent per cent owner of all but a few.

He spoke with this scribe last Tuesday, the day of declarations for last night’s Pepsi North America Cup eliminations.

Q: You’ve risen from a part time trainer/driver to becoming one of the foremost owners in our sport. How did that happen?“It was a combination of several factors. The chief one being associating myself with good people — both trainers and partners. I’ve been very lucky, I’ve had great success with both.”

Q: How did it all begin?“I wanted to get involved with quality horses. I was in Kentucky in the Fall of 2010. Myron Bell, who I didn’t know well at the time, but whose knowledge of the breed was well known, bought a Cantab Hall yearling colt named Modern Family of which I was the under bidder. I asked him if I could get in for a piece of the horse. Myron asked me how much I wanted. He said he would get back to me. I bought 25 per cent. Through my association with him, I became involved with Tony Alagna who I consider to be one of the best trainers anywhere. We did well and it grew from there. Right now I have 58 horses with 14 trainers. They include four colts who raced (last night) in the eliminations’ for the Pepsi North America Cup and two trotters in the Goodtimes elim.”

Q: You have your horses in 14 different stables. Why that many?“Firstly I believe those particular trainers are all excellent horsemen. In many, if not the majority of the cases, my partners and I go through the catalogs and videos together and pick out our choices. We then have different trainers look at them to determine if they are up to snuff. We then set a bid limit and go from there. I have the largest number of Ohio pacers with Brian Brown and a number of Ohio trotters with Chris Beaver. Most of the partners in those horses are from Ohio. I might also ask

others to take a piece. Both Brian and Chris train Grand Circuit horses as well and are good at that. I have a few of my better ones with Tony Alagna, who has also become a great friend. The majority of my partners with horses under Tony’s care have had horses with him for a long time. I love and respect both Brian and Chris as well as Tony. I have had lots of success with all three. I hope and expect that will continue to happen.”

Q: Who else do you have training for you?“I have horses with Ronnie Burke who I also consider one of the very best, Steve Carter, Robert Cleary, Noel Daley (Pebble Beach), George Ducharme, Ryan Miller, Chris Ryder, Ake Svanstedt, Nancy Takter, Linda Toscano, and Lucas Wallin. Unless I might feel strongly about where a particular horse goes, my partners generally help with that decision.”

Q: You have four entries in this Saturday’s Pepsi North America Cup eliminations. How do you think they will fare?“Right now I just hope they all race well. They are all in good form and I believe they are ready for the next two weeks and hopefully for the rest of the season. If I had to pick one, I guess it might be Pebble Beach. They are all good, but he might be exceptional. I Did It Myway is somewhat special because in addition to owning him I bred and raised him and sold 50 per cent of him to some of my favorite partners before we gave him to Tony.”

Q: In addition to racing a good many, you have also bred and raised a few.“I’ve owned a handful of broodmares. I’ve had some success in breeding, even though I’ve never been deeply invested in it, certainly not even approaching my involvement in racing. One of the first mares with which I was involved was Miss Pine Chip. She was one of the smoothest-going trotters I have ever seen even though her conformation was not the best. She could fly, but she hit her knees. We tried everything to get her off them, with no success. Finally, we gave up and bred her. After her first three foals I got an S.J.’s Caviar colt, named him Mr Pine Chip and gave him to Jim Arledge to train. He turned out to be a great 2-year-old, so I sold half of him. My partners convinced me give him to Trond Smedshammer for Grand Circuit racing as a 3-year-old. He won his first six races, including the fastest elimination of the Hambletonian in 1.52. He came into the race as the favorite. I brought 35 people to the clubhouse hoping to win the final. He had been somewhat under the weather that week and was not at his best that day. In retrospect, we probably should have scratched him. We probably would have if the race wasn’t the Hambletonian. Needless to say, that was a disappointing day. I also own Flymetothemoon

who is the dam of I Did It Myway. I Did It Myway is her first foal. I have a 2-year-old colt by Downbytheseaside out of her named For Once Inmy Life a yearling filly by Captaintreacherous named Reachingforthemoon, followed by a suckling colt by Downbytheseaside that I named Itwasaverygoodyear.

Q: You have been very successful with the stallions Captaintreacherous and Downbytheseaside.“That would be somewhat of an understatement. I refer to those boys as the gifts that never stop giving. They both were exceptional racehorses and earned $3,148,657(Captain) and $2,179,558 (Seaside), respectively. They each contributed a whole lot to the coffers, but that amount is relatively small compared to what they have earned and will continue to earn in the stud. After they went to stud I sold just a very small part of both The Captain and Seaside. I don’t know if I was just lucky or maybe a little smart. I suppose I could have cashed in and walked away with a huge profit. But I believed deeply in both horses and decided to ride with their success. At present, I still own about 20 per cent of each of them. The amount they have earned at stud and hopefully will continue to earn has been beyond my expectations. Both horses were successful from their beginnings and have had full books for every year that they were at stud. Captaintreacherous stands for $30,000. I believe he is the top priced pacing stallion anywhere. Downbytheseaside stands for $12,000 in North America and also shuttles to Australia. He bred 350 mares down under and 140 here this season. Just think of it — over 500 mares in just one year.”

Q: There are likely a very small number of North American owners who have as many horses as you do. How do you keep tabs on them all?“It’s similar to just about everything in this world of ours — computers. My son Joe, Jr. is a graduate IT. He developed programs for me which enable me to follow all of my horses, especially when they begin racing. In addition, I keep in touch with my trainers and, perhaps almost as importantly, I am in touch with my partners. An added benefit of being involved with so many horses is that it has enabled me to become friends with so many great people in our ownership groups. I have made several wonderful friends who will always be my friends both in and out of harness racing.”

Q: Let’s speak about some of your other good horses aside from Captaintreacherous and Downbytheseaside.“There have been a good many, a few that I might consider to be great or bordering on greatness. Without thinking too

long about it I would say Norway But My Way, Mr Pine Chip, Propulsion, My Mvp, Artspeak, Braggart, Ma Chere Hall, Lock Down Lindy, Norvelous Hanover and Hot Rod Mindale.”

Q: What would you consider to have been your greatest thrills?“There were quite a few, especially with Captaintreacherous — The Metro, The Meadowlands Pace, The Pepsi North America Cup and The Max Hempt Memorial at Pocono Downs. Of those, the most thrilling and certainly the most taxing was the Hempt Memorial. He had one of the toughest trips I’ve ever seen a horse get and still managed to win. Downbytheseaside had many great wins as well including the Matron, the Progress, the Hempt, and the Governor’s Cup, but the one that stood out to me was his world record win in 1.50 in the Standardbred in 2016 over the Delaware, Ohio track at 2 with Chris Page. It still boggles my mind. Imagine that! A two year old winning in 1:50 on a half-mile track.”

Q: How about disappointments?“There were some, but thankfully not too many. We thought that Downbytheseaside was the best horse in the race, but on Jug day he wasn’t at his best and he didn’t win the race that most Buckeyes might put as number one on their wish list. Back in 2007, we had Hot Rod Mindale in the Jug. He unfortunately was parked the entire mile in both heats and got beat for second both times. The decision not to race Captaintreacherous in the Jug was perhaps disappointing, but we did what we felt was best for the horse. We had two very legitimate Hambletonian candidates in Norway But My Way in 1992 and Mr Pine Chip in 2006. Unfortunately, Norway But My Way made a break and Mr Pine Chip had been ill and just was not himself. Hopefully, someday, I will win both the Jug and Hambo.”

Q: From what I’ve seen of your horses thus far, it appears as though this might be your best group of horses ever. Would you agree with that assessment? “I would, but only to a degree. This is horse racing. Things can change quite quickly. What you’ve seen so far represents only one eighth of the segments in which I am involved. There are three others for 3-year-olds — pacing fillies as well as trotting colts and fillies. The same four segments are there for 2-year-olds. I have two trotting colts that I think could be Hambletonian horses: Fast As The Wind with Tony Alagna and Testing Testing with George Ducharme. Our 2-year-olds are progressing quite well. It’s now the time of year where hope springs eternal. We will soon get some idea of what we have with our 2-year-olds. Some might not live up to expectations, hopefully there will be others that exceed them. That champion might be among them. That is why we play the game.”

Q: How do you go about choosing the yearlings that you are interested in and then who gets to train them?“As I said previously, my partners and myself confer with each other prior to selecting a trainer to look at each yearling.

Grand Fashion and a great ladyby Alan Leavitt

The mention of the 2-year-old trotting filly Grand Fashion caught my eye for a couple of reasons. I’ve had a little to do with her pedigree, but more about that later. The main attraction was the fact that she was bred and owned by Jules Siegel’s Fashion Farm.

Fashion Farm has been a major player in harness racing for decades. It was the creation of Jules and Arlene Siegel, or perhaps I should say Arlene and Jules Siegel. I’d been close to them down through the years, and I shared Jules’ sorrow when Arlene passed away in 2010. She was a wonderful lady, always gracious, smart, and blessed with a sly, subtle sense of humor that never lost too much time getting to the point. She often took the lead in picking out yearlings or selecting broodmares, and when she did, she picked well.

Together, the Siegels won virtually every major harness race, starting with the Hambletonian, which they won in 1995 with Tagliabue. Like all of their top horses, Tagliabue was trained by Jim Campbell, one of the leading trainers in our biz, much of it done with horses owned by the Siegels.

Here, an aside. The name, Fashion Farm, came with the farm property when the Siegels bought it. It was given that name by someone long ago, whose name escapes me, but he was a client of Stanley Dancer’s. He owned horses in partnership with Lou Silverstein, and he was a manufacturer of women’s clothing: Hence the use of word “Fashion” in naming his property.

Now to the filly that started all this exercise in memory, Grand Fashion. She’s by Walner, and out of Broadway Schooner, by Broadway Hall. Broadway Schooner was a champion race filly, earning $865,933. As a producer, she hit the jackpot with her second foal, the Donato Hanover filly Broadway Donna, a great stakes winner who earned $1,434,735.

The only cross close enough to be designated by name is a 3 by 4 cross to Conway Hall, which technically is described as line bred. In case you forgot, when the sum of the generations

in which the same name appears twice is six or less, that is inbreeding. When the sum of the generations is seven or eight, as it is here, that is line breeding. When no name appears twice to fit either of those two terms, such a pedigree is correctly described as an outcross.

I take some pride of authorship here, because Broadway Schooner, the dam of Grand Fashion, is sired by Broadway Hall, a horse which Meg and I bred and sold as a yearling to the Siegels.

Conway Hall is another shining example of the decisive role 2-year-old racing brilliance plays in determining the future success of a potential stallion. Conway Hall was bred by Meg and me, and raced by a top trainer, Bob Stewart. He was outstanding at 2, and was voted the Champion Two-Year-Old Trotting Colt in every poll.

I take some pride of authorship here, because Broadway Schooner, the dam of Grand Fashion, is sired by Broadway Hall, a horse which Meg and I bred and sold as a yearling to the Siegels.

As a sire, Conway Hall’s influence is still felt. His son, Windsong’s Legacy, won the Hambletonian, and then from his first crop sired Lucky Chucky, who was second in his Hambletonian, and Chapter Seven, a top stakes colt who won $1,954,986.

Retired to the stud, Chapter Seven was the leading money winning trotting sire in North America in 2021, and his champions include the great mare and Hambletonian winner Atlanta, and the leading sire of 2-year-old money winning trotters from his first crop in 2021, Walner.

Finally, one last note about the horses in Grand Fashion’s pedigree.

It was a great loss to our sport when Windsong’s Legacy was struck down by a heart attack after siring only two crops of foals. He was owned at the time by Bill Perretti, and I have to confess I still occasionally miss the sound of Perretti’s roar, which was always worse than the bite. One of these days I’m expecting to hear Bill up close again, and, with luck, Arlene Seigel, not to mention a gazillion other people. And if that works out, I’ll try to write another piece for HRU, to let you know what you’re missing.

Back in Grand Fashion’s pedigree, in the fifth generation is a sire named Prakas, who won the Hambletonian in 1985. The horse was named after Mike Prakas, who was a big time bloodstock agent under the nom de course Headline Brokers. Prakas sold a lot of good horses in his day, and I bought quite a few of them.




It was a pleasant surprise, after all these years, to hear from Prakas recently. He now lives in South Florida, and I look forward to seeing him again and, as he said, reminiscing.

And speaking of people, one of these days I’d like to meet Joe and Jennifer Bongiorno. As it happens, I knew their mother when she was six years old.

I was good friends with Sonny and Sandy Dancer, and they had a heated swimming pool at their farm in New Jersey. I was also close with Sonny’s dad, Harold Dancer, Sr., who was a great horseman and a greater human being. One Christmas Eve he stayed up all night putting together all of the toys that were sitting, unassembled, under Sonny and Sandy’s Christmas tree.

My two kids, who are both in their 50s now, were under 10 during the summers we spent Sundays at the Dancer’s pool. And their six year old daughter was always accompanied by her German Shepherd, who always stayed glued to the little girl’s side. You can be sure no one made the mistake of rushing up to the little girl too fast.

I just think her son and daughter might like to know about that.

Trick Of The Light continues to be formidable in IndianaThe sophomore pacing filly is two-for-two for trainer Brian Brown.

Two rounds of Indiana Sires Stakes for sophomore pacing fillies are now in the books at Harrah’s Hoosier Park Racing & Casino, and the early returns show Trick Of The Light, last year’s Super Final winner at 2, is again a formidable opponent. Trained by Brian Brown, the Odds On Equuleus—Gordjus lass secured her second stakes win Thursday (June 9), pacing to victory in a career best 1:50 in her $49,000 division.

“I don’t know what I can say other than she’s just tough. She loves to race and gives you her best every time,” said Brown.

In the opening leg of sires stakes competition, held on Memorial Day, Trick Of The Light captured her respective $34,500 split with Hoosier Park leading driver Trace Tetrick in the bike. The duo received every call and held off Jk’s Rollin Baby by a head in 1:50.3. By comparison, Always Gonna B You scored a 1:49.4 triumph in another division that day. After the race, Brown discovered his charge was not at her best despite the winning effort.

“She even tied up a little bit in the last start and still won. Then we changed her routine this week and the mare apparently didn’t tie up last night,” he said Friday afternoon. “She was really, really good.”

A $50,000 Hoosier Classic yearling purchase for the Buckeye State partnership of Country Club Acres Inc., Joe Sbrocco and Kirk Nichols, the filly is out of a Dragon Again mare that has proven to be quite productive in a short period of time. Trick Of The Light is a half-sister to six-figure earners Kak’s Rockin p,5, 1:51.4s ($113,839) and JK She’s Gordjus p,3, 1:52.1s ($105,882). The filly is from the first crop of Art Major stallion Odds On Equuleus, one of 19 registered foals, and the most successful to date.

“We’re never afraid to buy a first year stallion, so we kind of liked that. We’ve had good luck buying Dragon Again broodmares. She was just a nice looking filly that had a lot of length to her. She’s not real tall, but well-made and doesn’t wear a boot. She had a decent family behind her, and we just liked her when we

saw her,” Brown said. “I think that if Odds On Equuleus would have had the numbers, you’d be reading a lot more about him.”

Trick Of The Light did her part to promote the sire in 2021. Bred by Adam Eicher, the filly hit the board in six of nine attempts, registering three wins and three runner-up finishes. The pacer reached the wire first in another contest last season before being disqualified by judges for interference. In claiming last fall’s $270,000 Super Final, she closed the campaign with $227,250 in earnings while taking a 1:51.1 mark.

“She wintered really good. She’s an easy keeper. There’s really nothing that this filly does wrong. She trained down good,” said the conditioner. “We weren’t in a hurry since Indiana doesn’t start until later in May with the first sires stakes. We just came along a little easier, got the two qualifiers and two starts in before sires stakes started. Other than once in a while tying up, there’s no blips to her. She just goes out and races.”

Brown said that he could have sent the sophomore straight into sires stakes action off two qualifying efforts, but he wanted to give her two starts leading up to Memorial Day to ensure she was ready for battle. Trick Of The Light won her seasonal debut in 1:51.4 and raced second a week later in 1:50.3.

“I just worry, as fast as we go right off the bat with these horses, you can hurt one if you’re not ready. So I had her ready right off the bat,” he stated.

Memorial Day issues aside, Thursday evening the 3-year-old turned in a dominating performance in the night’s 11th race. Starting from the rail, Tetrick settled in third with the favorite

through a :26.4 opening panel before moving her to the top on the backstretch. Establishing a two-length advantage over the field, Trick Of The Light set the fractions and opened up by three and one-quarter lengths at the wire, kicking home in :26.4.

“I would say she is ahead of what I thought our schedule would be. I didn’t think we’d be going in :50 in the second leg of the sire stake. The other division went in 49.4 two starts back. That’s pretty unbelievable,” Brown said. “Hoosier Park is lightning fast, but it still takes a pretty good horse to go around there in :50 or better.”

The primary objective may be Indiana Sires Stakes, however Trick Of The Light’s connections will give her a chance to showcase her abilities on the Grand Circuit this summer and fall. Brown said that the filly is eligible to the Nadia Lobell and Pegasus at Hoosier Park, but she is also staked to the Mistletoe Shalee, James Lynch Memorial, Jugette, Glen Garnsey Memorial and Breeders Crown. Should Trick Of The Light make each engagement, the filly will have a challenging schedule outside the Hoosier State to complement her in-state slate.

“We have a lot of confidence in her. I don’t like going out of state too much with these. I don’t want to get them beat up before the sires stakes final,” said Brown. “But this filly has been so good and has such a good attitude, that we decided to go ahead and give her a shot.”

Freezer Burns, favorites and fansby Trey Nosrac

I showed Freezer Burns a replay of my horse trotting to a sixth-place finish. He asked, “Who decided who drove your horse in that race?”

Freezer is one of the brightest bulbs in my cadre of dimwits, a slim guy who sports green work shirts and spiky hair that looks like it never met a comb. He also has a left arm that is purple with tattoos. However, his left arm is the only place on his body he has tattoos, as if, somewhere in his mind, he knew getting inked up was a bad idea, so he faithfully limited the spread.

His driver’s license reads Dylan Burns. But his reprobate pals refer to him as Freezer because he is self-employed in the HVC game. He drives around town in a pink van with the words Call for a COOL Dude painted on the sides in big black letters. In the winter, he repaints the word COOL to HOT.

I dutifully attempted to explain to Freezer the driver selection process in a harness horse race: “The owner or trainer sends in the name of who they want to drive the racehorse. Then we hope the driver selects our horse. Sometimes we send in a second choice, even a third. The top drivers want to make money. They may or may not choose your horse.”

Freezer interrupted and looked for clarification, “So, you tell me that the best drivers will sit behind the best horses in most races?”

“Yes.”

He replied with a barrage of observations, “Well, that’s very stupid. That makes a horse race more predictable. That process may be fine for people like you, who are up to your arse in the sport, but it is not entertaining for potential customers like me who would want a more competitive race.”

I sputtered, “Well, er, there is more involved, top trainers get favoritism sometimes, personal friendships are involved, there is a code of drivers courtesy on the track, it’s complicated.”

He kept whining, “And to me, that is discriminatory to some drivers. Unknown drivers get the shaft. It’s cronyism.”

“Hey, the top divers earned their spurs and owners, and trainers want the top driver available. Even gamblers always want the best driver on their horse.”

“You know who wants the best driver on their horse?”

“Who?”

“Everybody, including the guy who has the worst horse and normal people, and anyone who wants a more exciting product.”

“Freezer, you just don’t understand our sport.”

“True, except when you drag it out in front of me and babble on about last quarters and second over. But if you look at the picture with open eyes, anyone can see that the goal should be to make the sport more fun, a race more unpredictable, more competitive, and offer bigger payoffs.”

“How?” I whimpered.

“The last time you showed me one of your horses in a race, you said you are toast when you draw an outside post. You complain the sport has become stale. Why don’t they do something about it?”

“Who should do what?”

He thought for a few moments, scratched his purple arm, then said, “Take this driver BS you are trying to explain. Here is an idea.

Don’t assign drivers or postpositions until after the wagering is locked in. Each race has a pool of drivers, and I suggest a female or two, maybe an amateur or two, for a race. Everyone is clueless about what driver the horses will be assigned until wagering is complete. At the last instance, bang, via random drawing, all will be revealed. More drama.”

I clapped my hands on my forehead at this blasphemy, “You don’t know our sport. Existing owners, trainers, and drivers will be furious to exhaustion. Traditionalists will get the vapors.”

“Good. Shake things up. Who cares? Look, your horse just finished out of the money. Did you have the top-rated driver?”

“He’s okay.”

“From what you tell me, I’m guessing a top driver was steering the winning horse?”

I looked at the results. “Yes.”

“Simple question: If that top driver had been behind your horse, do you think you would have gotten some money, maybe finished fifth?”

“Maybe, possibly.”

“Do you think that race might have been better if your driver and the winning driver had switched?”

“Conceivably.”

“Think about this. If your sport had a driver drawing just before the race, the drawing for post position might be as dramatic and crucial as the actual harness race, and this would make higher payoffs and more competitive racing. This last-minute scramble would also add a new level of entertainment, and the late selection would introduce some random selection into a wager.”

Freezer Burns is no dummy. He had some excellent points.

I began to get on board, “As losing bettors, we rarely feel we picked the wrong horse. We blame everything from Feng Shui to global warming and anyone from the Dalai Lama to the driver. Especially the driver.”

I chuckled and continued, “When humans physically attended races, it was hilarious to hear bellowing from fellows with losing tickets about bad trips and how the damn driver stiffed them. Complaints about driving from people who could barely navigate their Buick through the empty parking lot were experts about guiding a rampaging trotter through close and dangerous quarters.”

Freezer, a cool dude, smiled and said, “That kind of conflict is good. It is gold. Come on, open your eyes. Open your mind. Let the last-minute drawing for post positions and drivers begin.”

Top performances Saturday at Vincennesby Thomas Hedlund

Paris track Vincennes played host to a really nice race card on Saturday (June 11) afternoon and when the French bred 4-year-old colts battled in $125,000 Prix Jules Thibault, the racing fans witnessed an exciting rumble between two of the best horses in the crop.

Thierry Duvaldestin-trained Idao de Tillard in the lead, Izoard Vedaquais (Bird Parker) on the outside and these two would fight side by side during the race’s last kilometer.

Izoard Vedaquais, trained by Philippe Allaire, started his career with 11 consecutive wins and seemed to be the king of the ”I-horses” in France. But at the end of last season, roles changed and Idao de Tillard wanted to be on top of the mountain.

Izoard Vedaquais disarmed leader Idao de Tillard just ahead of Vincenne’s wire and both the winner and the runner up came home in a great mile rate of 1:55.2 over 2,700 meters (approximately 1.6 miles).

The 4-year-old mares had $125,000 Prix Guy le Gonidec to look forward to and first choice Idylle Speed (Carat Williams) consolidated her position as number one in the crop since she put her nose first after a perfect trip served by Jean-Michel Bazire. Bazire pushed Idylle Speed to front position after a mile, but opted a pocket trip and later first over, from where she proved best in mile rate 1:58.

UPSET WINNER IN CHAMBON PThe $125,000 Prix Chambon P collected a strong field of trotters at Vincennes on Saturday (June 11) afternoon and

Fabrice Souloy-trained Gu d’Heripre (Coktail Jet) played with his opponents from the lead since driver Jean-Philippe Monclin was allowed to keep the pace at a 2:04-level the first mile.

Elie de Beaufour finished strongly as runner up, but had no chance to challenge Gu d’Heripre at the home stretch and the winner came home in a mile rate of 1:59.2 over 1.7 miles. Prix d’Amérique runner up Galius made his comeback after four months away from the tracks and he finished third.

Philippe Allaire’s Hohneck (Royal Dream) impressed from the lead in the $125,000 Prix Jean le Gonidec for 5-year-olds. Driver Francois Lagadeuc stepped on the gas pedal in the last turn and Hohneck left the rest of the field and came home in mile rate 1:54 over 1.3 miles.

VERNISSAGE GRIF BEST IN ÖSTERSUNDAlessandro Gocciadoro and his Vernissage Grif (Varenne) showed up in Östersund, Sweden and impressed when the duo claimed the $140,000 Jämtlands Stora Pris for the older elite over 1.3 miles.

From post 10, Vernissage Grif ended far back in the field as Click Bait hit the lead with hard pressure from outside trotter Selected News. First choice Mister Hercules went off strid on his way to the lead in the first turn and the real show started at the back stretch, when Alessandro Gocciadoro made his move with Vernissage Grif, four wide. Vernissage Grif had to continue far outside throughout the last turn.

When Millindollarrhyme took control at the top of the stretch,

Vernissage Grif attacked once again and Alessandro Gocciadoro reach both his hands in the air and applauded the horse and the fans that showed up in Östersund. The chestnut 8-year-old defended the title in Jämtlands Stora Pris and mile rate was 1:57.

Milliondollarrhyme finished second and Click Bait third.

SET FOR BATTLE IN OSLOThe $250,000 Oslo Grand Prix over 1.3 miles is on the schedule at Bjerke racetrack in Oslo, Norway today (June 12). The Oslo Grand Prix-day at Bjerke is traditionally one of the more exciting events in northern Europe during the hectic spring and summer season and it’s quite an interesting field Bjerke has gathered this year.

Canadian Elitloppet contender Perfetto, who was a solid fifth in his elimination at Solvalla, will try again among European trotters, but Dagfin Henriksen’s trotter drew number 8 behind the gate and Perfetto is probably not one of the hottest contenders in the race.

Björn Goop got an Elitloppet invitation with his San Moteur, but chose not to race at Solvalla. San Moteur will instead face the older elite as a probable first choice on Sunday, as he will start from post 6.

The home team will primarily put its hope to Geir Vegard Gundersen trained Cicero T.G. who comes from a strong runner up performance behind San Moteur.

It’s a quite young field that chases the prestigious trophy at

Bjerke today and the youngest trotter in the field is American bred Seven Nation Army, who makes his third start on European soil.

Soaring Now, JK Victory take ISS divisions for sophomore pacing coltsby Emily Gaskin / Harrah’s Hoosier Park

After opening their stakes season in impressive fashion last week, the Hoosier state’s top 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings were back in action at Harrah’s Hoosier Park on Friday (June 10) as two $50,000 divisions of Indiana Sires Stakes were featured on the evening’s 13-race card.

In the opening division, Soaring Now utilized an impressive late closing kick to track down his rivals late in the lane to score by a length in 1:50.1. With Andy Shetler in the bike, Soaring Now notched the first win of his three-year-old campaign.

Leaving from the coveted rail position, Soaring Now protected his position to get the first call through the opening quarter in :26.1. Oneshotatthetitle and Lewayne Miller were unable to find a spot along the rail and ranged up to take command and lead through middle fractions of :54.1 and 1:23.

As the field reached the three-quarters, the heavily favored Fulfullnmydestiny and James Yoder were on the front. Soaring

Now had to navigate through some traffic but powered home once he found late racing room to get the win by a length over Big Law and Sam Widger. Lucks On Time and Brandon Bates also rallied well late for third. Sent off as the publics’ second choice, Soaring Now returned $5.20 to his backers at the betting windows.

Owned by James Miller, the son of JK Endofanera—Sunflower recorded his fourth lifetime victory and first win of this three-year-old campaign for trainer Aaron Stutzman. With a lifetime bankroll of $74,500, Soaring Now was bred by Luckiana Farms of Indiana. The 1:50.1 time established a new lifetime best for Soaring Now.

In the second division, it was JK Victory who backed up his win last week with another impressive, front-stepping victory. With Trace Tetrick in the bike, JK Victory fended off all challengers to get the win by a half of a length in 1:49.3.

Tetrick wasted no time and sent JK Victory away from the gate firing. The heavily favored Ponda Warrior and Jimmy Whitmore were content to sit in the pocket while JK Victory rattled off fractions of :26.3, :54.3 and 1:22.4. As the field turned for home, Ponda Warrior tipped from the pocket but JK Victory wasn’t finished. Using a :26.4 final panel, JK Victory kept all challengers at bay to get the win. Ponda Warrior was forced to settle for second place while Rip Wheeler charged home for third. JK Victory paid $7.40 for the win.

Trained by Ron Burke, the gelded son of JK Endofanera—GT Miss Royal recorded his second win of the season and third lifetime victory. JK Victory pushed his lifetime bankroll over the $100,000 mark for owners 3 Brothers Stable and Caviart Farms. JK Victory was bred by Victory Hill Farm and is a half-brother to Indiana’s stand-out open pacer, Little Rocket Man.

Branded By Lindy and Slay notch NYSS wins at Vernonby John Horne for Vernon Downs

Vernon Downs played host to two divisions of the New York Sire Stakes (NYSS) for sophomore trotting colts and geldings on Friday afternoon (June 10).

Branded By Lindy (Yannick Gingras) cruised to an easy win in the $57,000 first division.

Middleman (Brian Sears) went straight to the front and led to the first quarter in :29. Branded By Lindy ($2.10) made his move as they headed for the backstretch going first-over from third. He cleared the lead just before hitting the first half in :58.4. He was first to three-quarters in 1:26.4.

As they made the turn home Branded By Lindy just breezed down the stretch and won easily in 1:54.2. Castle House (Tim

Tetrick) came up late to finish second. Middleman held on for third.

Branded By Lindy is a 3-year-old colt by Chapter Seven. He is owned by Lindy Farms Of Connecticut and trained by Domenico Cecere. The colt is on top of Ken Warkentin’s road to the Hambletonian list. He

wins his first race as a sophomore colt and now has nine career victories.

Slay (Tim Tetrick) charged late to capture the $57,000 second division.

Slay ($9.00) took the lead and led the quarter in :28. The big favorite Cool Papa Bell (Brian Sears) took over just before hitting the half first in :56.3. Cool Papa Bell cruised to Three-quarters in 1:24.1.

As they headed for home Cool Papa Bell was the one to beat. When they reached mid-stretch Slay popped the pocket and eased on by to win in a lifetime best of 1:52.2. Cool Papa Bell had to settle for second. Velvet Style (Yannick Gingras) finished third.

Slay is a 3-year-old colt by Chapter Seven. He is owned by Crawford Farms Racing and James Crawford IV while trained by Tony Alagna. It was his first win of the season. He now has three career wins.

Gingras and Cecere combined for three wins on the card. They got their other wins with Sonny’s Moni ($2.60), and Raised By Lindy ($2.20).

Sophomore trotters took the spotlight on Friday evening (June 10) at Woodbine Mohawk Park for the eliminations of the Goodtimes.

A pair of $30,000 eliminations were contested to determine the field for next Saturday’s (June 18) $251,000 final.

Fast As The Wind took care of business as the heavy-favourite in the first elimination. Driver Dexter Dunn moved the Tony Alagna trainee to the top from third entering the backstretch and never looked back, posting fractions of :56.4 and 1:25.3 en route to a 1:53.2 score.

“He’s really fast and he was still travelling really good coming off the turn,” said Dunn. “I was confident he was going to kick away there and he did.

“He finished last year off so strongly and he’s come back better this year and his qualifiers and his races have been super, his last quarters have been really strong, so gives you lots of confidence.”

Runner-up Southwind Domino finished three lengths back of the winner. The final three horses advancing were Pretender, Archery Seelster and Duly Resolved.

A son of Cantab Hall, Fast As The Wind had finished second and third in his previous two outings this season, both against older foes. The Alagna trainee had a busy rookie season, winning five of 15 starts, including a major victory in the Valley Victory.

Ontario sired star Twin B Archie converted off a perfect two-hole trip to win the second elimination. James MacDonald guided the Scott McEneny trainee to a career-best 1:53.1 score.

Looks Like Moni did the road work, cutting out fractions of :28, :56.4 and 1:25.2, while Twin B Archie sat right behind in the pocket. Turning for home, Twin B Archie angled out and would muscle by to win by a head. World At War Deo came into the mix late to finish third.

A three-way photo for fourth saw Testing Testing and Gigondas secure the final two spots in next week’s final.

A gelded son of Archangel, Twin B Archie improved to three for four this season, now sporting a Grand Circuit victory to go with his triumph in the SBOA Stakes. The OSS Super Final winner has seven wins and $398,866 in career earnings for owners McEneny, Domenic Chiaravalle, Floyd Marshall and Marwest Racing Stable.

“He fought right to the wire,” said McEneny of Twin B Archie’s effort Friday. “He can go with these guys and hopefully get a good trip next week and have a shot at it.”

Twin B Archie paid $6.40 to win.

Pebble Beach shored up his impressive stat sheet in taking the first of two eliminations for the Pepsi North America Cup at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday night. The sophomore son of Downbytheseaside—Santa Rosa, trained by Noel Daley, was in full flight down the stretch in a 1:49.4 mile.

It was a pair of longshots, 44-1 Market Based and 22-1 Frozen Hanover, who held down the top-two positions as the group of nine arrived at the first turn. At the quarter, reached in :27, Market Based led Frozen Hanover by 1 ¾-lenghts with Night Hawk, second choice on the tote board, and Pebble Beach, the mutuel choice, following in third and fourth, respectively.

bided his time with Pebble Beach, sitting fourth as the field approached the turn for home. Night Hawk, still calling the shots after three-quarters in 1:23.1, braced for the challenge of Pebble Beach, who came calling quickly to the outside.

On top by a head at Ken Middleton’s stretch call, Pebble Beach crossed the wire a 1 ½-length winner. Night Hawk easily held for second, with Mad Max Hanover, Frozen Hanover and Kolby Two Step rounding out the top five, to punch their ticket to the $1 million final.

“That trip wasn’t his go there on front last week, but it worked out like that,” said McCarthy. “But I was really happy with the way that he did it. Even being first over there tonight, I was first over there, way out, and I was a little concerned about it. But he handled himself really well and when I asked him at the top of the lane, he had plenty left.

It was the ninth win in 14 starts for Pebble Beach, who is owned by Patricia Stable, Joe Sbrocco, Country Club Acres Inc., and Laexpressfoderadeovolente.

Bred by Brittany Farms LLC, the bay, an $85,000 purchase at the 2020 Lexington Select Sale, came into his elimination engagement off a 2 ¾-length triumph in one of two Somebeachsomewhere divisions on June 4 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Owner of a 1:48.4 speed badge, Pebble Beach paid $3.90 for the victory.

“He’s such a cool horse to be around and he’s got a lot of characteristics and he’s a lot of fun to drive,” said McCarthy. “So full credit to Noel and the team. They’re doing a terrific job with him and he’s a lot of fun to sit behind right now.”

I Did It Myway, with Tim Tetrick in the race bike, blasted off the gate to secure the lead into the first turn as Beach Glass, in rein to Yannick Gingras, was also in motion early, crossing over from post eight to engage the pacesetter through an opening split of :26.3.

Gingras, who took over driving duties of the son of Somebeachsomewhere from Paul MacDonell, then powered to his charge to the front and guided their seven rivals through a half in :55.2, as I Did It MyWay sat second, with Magical Arthur third and Early Action fourth.

Beach Glass was still full of vigor on the front end, reaching three quarters in 1:23.3, and 1 ¾-lengths clear at the stretch call, as I Did It Myway attempted to reel in the leader, and a rallying Ario Hanover began to pick up steam to the outside.

At the wire, Beach Glass, trained by Brent MacGrath, recorded a three-quarter length victory in a time of 1:51.0. I Did It Myway was second, a half-length in front of Ario Hanover. Ron took fourth, and Fourever Boy was next across the line, as that top five moved on to next Saturday’s $1 million final.

A lightly-raced colt – tonight was just his seventh career start and second of the year – Beach Glass is bred and owned by Schooner II Stable out of Truro, NS.

“He was good,” said MacGrath. “He’s a very green horse. Yannick said he was waiting on the horses a little bit, and he had to shake him up. We were feeling that was happening in the last couple of starts. He really needed this race bad and he needed to get stretched out like he did there tonight and woke up a little bit.

“I told Yannick a little bit about that, that he would fire up quickly and then settle down. He’s got the open bridle on him, he’s seeing a bunch of stuff; seeing the tote board lit up, it’s different, all those things are different for him. We’re happy we geared him up the way we did, that might have made him and Yannick a little uncomfortable for a second, but it worked out good. He could relax good on the front end and got a quarter in :28.4. Whenever you end up getting on the muscle and aggressive, you could pace that quarter probably in :27.4 and it might have been somebody else standing here.”

MacGrath, the man who campaigned the brilliant Somebeachsomewhere, is hopeful his bay colt, now a four-time winner, will be even better next Saturday night.

“I was very happy with him. He needed that race. That’s only his seventh lifetime start. Those colts that raced there tonight have 20 starts a lot of them. He’ll be a different horse, I believe, next week.”

The 39th edition of the Pepsi North America Cup is set for Saturday, June 18, at Woodbine Mohawk Park. The post-position draw will take place on Tuesday, June 14 and will be streamed on www.woodbine.com/mohawk/.

Trainer Brett Pelling sent two undefeated 3-year-old pacing fillies, Treacherous Dragon and Wickedly Innocent, into Saturday’s (June 11) $35,000 Fan Hanover eliminations at Woodbine Mohawk Park. One extended her unbeaten record while the other came up short by inches.

In the first test Boudoir Hanover grabbed early control for Todd McCarthy from post six and led the fillies past the opening panel in a quick :26. Favorite Treacherous Dragon and Tim Tetrick popped out from third and flew up to take control well before the :55.3 half. They hit the three-quarters in 1:23.1 and could not be caught down the stretch, tripping the timer in 1:50.2.

Prohibition Legal, last year’s O’Brien Award winner as Canada’s 2-year-old pacing filly of the year, had a bit of traffic trouble down the lane and managed to sneak up the inside to finish a close second. Sea Silk got up for third while Boudoir Hanover held for fourth. Also earning a berth into next week’s final was Smuggle Tina.

Treacherous Dragon is undefeated thus far in 2022 with tonight’s win her fourth in as many trips behind the gate. Pelling trains the daughter of Captaintreacherous for owner Hot Lead Farm of New Jersey. A winner of $299,000 during her rookie campaign, the filly was a $260,000 yearling purchase.

Her dam is the $2.3 million winner My Little Dragon who competed in the 2006 edition of the Fan Hanover and finished a close second in both her elimination and the final. Treacherous Dragon’s three-quarter brother is the $1.3 million winner Stay Hungry who captured his elimination of the North America Cup in 2018 and was fourth in the final.

When asked to compare her on the racetrack from her 2 to 3-year-old season Tetrick said: “She’s grown up a lot. Brett and his connections really took a wait and see approach last year at two and let her come into herself. This year we’re being a bit more aggressive with her and she’s getting the job done, that’s for sure.

“Her best game isn’t on the front, she’s really lazy. Turning for home and she sees them coming she digs in really well.”

In the second elimination it was Queen Of Success leading the girls through a first quarter of :27.1 Dont Fence Me In and Scott Zeron came from third to first well before the :56 half. First up and challenging was Lyons Serenity at the 1:23.2 third panel and that filly paced on by the leader as they headed down the stretch but she had plenty of company.

The heavy favorite Wickedly Innocent had the lead briefly but James MacDonald and Silver Label came from second last on the rail at the top of the stretch and closed quickly to collar the favourite in the last steps to win by a neck in 1:50.4. Lyons Serenity, Queen Of Success and Free To Be Me all advanced to the final in that order.

A homebred for Millar Farms of Stouffville, ON, Silver Label is a daughter of Bettors Delight—Hidden Gem trained by Nick Gallucci. She and her stablemate Prohibition Legal both advanced to next week’s final. For Silver Label it was her second win in three tries so far this year and her easiest trip of the 2022 season according to her driver.

“She’s had a couple of tough trips (in her first two starts this year) she didn’t deserve a third,” said MacDonald. “That’s what great horses do; they bounce back. I didn’t want to be hard on her tonight, I rolled the dice and got lucky. I rode the fence and slid out mid pack, Todd (McCarthy on Wickedly Innocent) was advancing quick enough that I could slide out on his back.

Sometimes you don’t have the best trip, you need a little bit of racing luck.”

The connections of both elimination winners were able to select their post positions for next week’s $401,000 final which will be a feature on the under card of North America Cup night next Saturday night.

Test Of Faith and Lyons Sentinel impress in Roses Are Redby Heather MacKay Roberts / Woodbine communications

Saturday’s $35,000 Roses Are Red eliminations for pacing mares at Woodbine Mohawk Park saw the stake’s reigning champion, Lyons Sentinel, and last year’s Horse of the Year in the U.S., Test Of Faith, prevail in impressive fashion.

Test Of Faith was making her Canadian debut and clearly demonstrated her dominance to fans north of the border in the first elimination. In that test it was O’Brien Award winner So Much More and James MacDonald with control well before the :27.2 opening panel.

Just past that point Test Of Faith took over for Dave Miller and was well settled on top by the :56 half.

The mares remained in single file by the 1:23.2 three-quarters. Down the stretch several attempted to catch the leader but none were successful as Test Of Faith was a wrapped up winner in 1:49.4 for Miller who didn’t move in the bike through the lane. Next across the wire and qualifying for the final were So Much More, Amazing Dream N, Awesome Hill and Dabarndawgswatchin.

Test Of Faith, who was 14-2-0 in 16 starts during her Horse of the Year campaign, was notching her second win in her 4-year-old season. The daughter of Art Major—Cannae Cammie is owned by Melvin Segal, Kentuckiana Racing Stable and Eddie Gran and is trained by Brett Pelling.

“She’s a champion, she’s just one of those horses a lot of people wait a lifetime to have. We’re blessed that we’ve had some great horses. She’s fabulous, everything about her is just glorious,” said Pelling.

“We raced her at the Meadowlands three weeks ago and I didn’t think she was airborne through the wire like she normally is. We found a bit of a problem with her and we feel we fixed it and that’s why she was off. She’s such a professional, she could come off 30 days it wouldn’t matter. She is so graceful; I enjoy watching her myself and being around her.”

The second split saw Gias Surreal leaving well from post eight to grab early control but Kobes Gigi took over at the :27.3 opener. She paced on by the half in :55.2 with no one pressuring. But as they headed into the final turn, Gias Surreal popped out and hit the three-quarters in 1:23.1. As they headed through the lane it was favorite Lyons Sentinel, who raced in fifth most of the race, flying up on the far outside to hit the wire first in 1:50.1.

Also qualifying for next week’s final, in order were Kobes Gigi, Gias Surreal, Fire Start Hanover and Lit De Rose.

A winner now of more than $2.2 million to date in her career, Lyons Sentinel is owned by Threelyonsracing of Brantford, ON. The 5-year-old daughter of Captaintreacherous is trained by Jim King Jr.

“I thought she was just outstanding,” King said after the race, “when it comes time she goes by them. She’s pretty special, we’re looking forward to a really nice year. She belongs to some people who absolutely love this game and they need something like this.”

Lyons Sentinel has a record of success on Canadian soil as she’s the reigning Roses Are Red and Milton champion.

“She seems to be really happy when I bring her up here,” King said, laughing.

The top five finishers from each elimination will return next Saturday night, North America Cup night, for the $315,000 final.

Captain Cowgirl sets national season mark of 1:49.3 in PASS at The Meadowsby Evan Pattak for The Meadows Standardbred Owners Association

Defending Pennsylvania champion Captain Cowgirl poured it on through a :55.3 back half en route to a sparking 1:49.3 victory in Saturday’s $133,830 Pennsylvania Sires Stake at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows. Sweet And Feisty captured the other division of the event for 3-year-old filly pacers, known as the Adios Betty.

Captain Cowgirl kicked off her sophomore campaign with a middling fourth-place finish in the PASS opening leg, but she was all business in the Adios Betty — even though winning driver Aaron Merriman altered his original intention to tuck.

“I was going to do that, but she felt so good I went on with her,” Merriman said. “It’s hard to slow horses down at this level when they’re stirred up.”

The pace was just fine for the daughter of Captaintreacherous—Rideintothesunset, who not only set a lifetime mark, but she also turned in the fastest mile this season by a sophomore filly pacer on a five-eighths-mile track.

Jim King, Jr. trains Captain Cowgirl, who now has banked $289,977 lifetime, for Jo Ann Looney-King and Kenneth Frieder.

Sweet And Feisty entered the Adios Betty off a 1:50.4 triumph in a stallion series split, but owner/trainer Mitchell York said that wasn’t the primary reason he promoted her to the sires stake.

“We thought she had that kind of talent from the very beginning,” York said of the daughter of Sweet Lou-Fast And Fiesty. “But she ended up with two broken bones last year and couldn’t race. We didn’t know how she would come back.”

When Ronnie Wrenn, Jr. angled her off cover, Sweet And Feisty blew past pacesetter Lydeo and defeated her by a length in 1:52.3. Somesweetsomewhere completed the ticket.

York indicated his filly will race primarily in Pennsylvania this year.

PA STALLION SERIESWrenn and trainer Ron Burke teamed for a pair of stallion series wins with Sweet Kisses and Galleria Hanover while Hood Party took the other division.

When Sweet Kisses moved first over from third, she gobbled up the leaders and scored in a career-best 1:51, 4-3/4 lengths better than Heartbreak Hotel, with Miss Helen Hanover third.

“I drove her once last year and liked her,” Wrenn said. “I think she’d be competitive in the sires stakes, if that’s what the connections choose to do.”

Burke Racing Stable, J&T Silva – Purnel & Libby, Knox Services and Phillip Collura campaign Sweet Kisses.

Wrenn and Burke each collected four wins on the 13-race card while Aaron Merriman fashioned a three-bagger.

Dancer acknowledged for nation’s first horse racing helmet safety standards

New Jersey Assemblyman Ron Dancer has partnered with the Rutgers Equine Science Center to promote the center’s first New Jersey Equestrian Safety Week.

“I’m eager to lend whatever assistance I can to help the center promote equestrian safety,” Dancer (R-Ocean) said. “Safety is important in any sport, but in the case of equestrian events, both the equestrian and the horse must be well-protected and injuries to either can be serious and devastating.”

Equestrian safety is a long-time commitment for Dancer and one that resulted in revolutionary change in an essential safety device. Dancer served as the chairman of the United States Trotting Association’s racing helmet safety research and development committee, whose work led to the first safety standards for drivers’ helmets.

Before these standards were created, horse racing helmets were merely plastic caps with no penetration standards and no shock absorption liners. They were secured with only elastic chin straps, which have been replaced with a three-point safety retention system.

“Assemblyman Dancer’s lifelong commitment to the safety and well-being of horses and equestrians makes him the perfect partner to work with to bring awareness to this campaign,” said Equine Science Center Director, Dr. Karyn Malinowski. “While he might be humble about how much work went into it, his work to ensure the safety of horseracing drivers is something that should be highlighted and commended.”

Equestrian sports are among the most dangerous in the United States because injuries are more likely to be severe and require hospitalization than injuries resulting from other sports, and traumatic brain injuries are one of the most common injuries reported among injured riders.

Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association to live stream Ohio county fair races in 2022

Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association (OHHA) will again stream Ohio county fair races this summer. The OHHA is scheduled to live stream over 125 race cards from 65 county and independent fairs.

The OHHA will kick off the 2022 schedule with coverage from the Paulding County Fairgrounds in Paulding Monday June 13 and Tuesday June 5. Post Time each day is 4:00 PM.

“We are excited to again bring Ohio county fair racing to harness racing fans in Ohio, the United States and across the world,” said OHHA outreach and public relations coordinator Frank Fraas. “Last year, the OHHA streamed 123 race cards during the summer that were seen in 38 states and 11 countries.”

SBOANJ scholarship application due June 24

The Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey and the Backstretch Community Assistance Program of New Jersey will award scholarships to qualified students currently enrolled in or plan to attend a 2 or 4-year college or university.

Candidates must be either a son or daughter of a full-time participant in New Jersey harness racing and SBOANJ member or are themselves a full- time participant. Only one candidate per household will be considered, and there is a lifetime cap of $10,000 per individual.

Leavitt gets it wrong on Mr. ProspectorThis letter is in response to Mr. Leavitt’s June 4 column when he speaks about the thoroughbred sire Mr. Prospector. I am a thoroughbred breeder but I read Mr. Leavitt’s column every week because I find his insights on breeding interesting. However, he was way off when he opined on Mr. Prospector. Mr. Prospector was bred in the purple by one of the leading Kentucky breeders of the era, Spendthrift Farm, and was the most expensive yearling sold in America in 1971. Contrary to Mr. Leavitt’s column Mr. Prospector was unraced at 2, but became a phenomenon at age 3 and 4 being named champion sprinter in 1974. His trainer, Jimmy Croll, was well respected and trained many stakes winners in his career primarily based at Monmouth Park in New Jersey and Florida. His owner Butch Savin’s Aisco Stable was a prominent owner of the era and when Mr. Prospector retired

in 1975 he wanted to stand him at his own farm in Florida. In those days, Florida’s breeding industry was far superior to what it is today and while Mr. Prospector probably didn’t get the quality of mares he might have received in Kentucky the book was good enough for him to produce champion It’s in the Air in his first crop and top racehorse and influential stallion Fappano in his second. These two horses drew the attention of the fabled Kentucky nursery Claiborne Farm who purchased Mr. Prospector with the help of one of their main clients Peter Brant and moved him to Kentucky where he was a phenomenal stallion with a lasting influence on the thoroughbred breed.

Striking it rich with Rich Strikeby Alan Leavitt

I just had occasion to glance over the extended pedigree of the recent Kentucky Derby winner, Rich Strike, and the inbreeding was, to plagiarize from the colt’s name, striking.As you’ll recall, Rich Strike was the second longest shot ever to win thoroughbred racing’s most prestigious race. That he was the beneficiary of a deadly speed duel between the two favorites doesn’t change the fact that on May 7, 2022 he was the best horse in the 20-horse field.He only drew into the race at the very last minute, thanks to the latest possible scratch by trainer D. Wayne Lukas.Here, a personal opinion RE: the 20-horse field that Rich Strike laid to rest. I’ve always felt that a 20-horse field was basically an unfair contest, what with the bumping, jamming, collisions, and being forced to race wide around the turns.Rich Strike, however, starting from as far as out as the gate went, still managed to find his way through and around all the clutterers without giving up too much ground on the turns. That was to the credit of his jockey, Sonny Leon, who learned his trade on the second tier tracks of Ohio, and learned it well.

But back to Rich Strike and his pedigree. He’s inbred, 2 by 3, to Smart Strike, and his sire, Keen Ice, is inbred, 3 by 3, to Deputy Minister. That’s about as deep of concentration of blood as you’re going to find in any standardbred, and I’ve found it so rarely as to come to doubt it actually exists in any of our present day stakes winners.

But it surely exists in Rich Strike, and I offer it as proof positive that, when done properly, inbreeding can create a synergy, i.e. two plus two equals seven. It’s also notable that Smart Strike is sired by Mr. Prospector, who proves again that it’s the 2-year-old racing year that gives the best insight into a stallion’s future potential as a sire.

Mr. Prospector raced only at 2, when he was devastating, despite being trained by someone who was roundly criticized by everyone who had a printable opinion. He wound up standing in Florida, where he got very limited opportunity. Despite numerous handicaps, Mr. Prospector showed someone with keen eyesight that he was a real sire. I’m not sure who it was, but a major Kentucky breeder braved the Florida alligators and snakes, bought Mr. Prospector, and the rest is all Rock ‘n Roll, as they say in Detroit.

Wait, before we hit the dance floor, two quick final thoughts about Rich Strike. I don’t like his chances in the Belmont. I can’t give you any specific reasons, but it’s just my intuition.

However, I do like his chances as a sire, even though he only made four starts at 2. Clearly he was no hell as a racehorse at 2, but he did win $38,069, which isn’t totally chicken feed.

But it’s his inbreeding that gives him a real shot as a sire. Now we’ll see which Big or Medium Sized Dog from the sport of king’s is smart enough to scoop him up. Or maybe even a Small Dog, who knows, when you’re talking about the rich folks who live on the other side of the tracks. And hands down, this week Rich Strike wins the I’m My Own Grandpa Award, an award created and awarded by this kid only.

You will notice major changes to this week’s condition sheet when it goes online later this weekend. Our plan is to go with short series with two legs and a final, all for increased purses, in the hope that we get more entries.

I apologize for taking so long to make these changes in our racing program, but my buildings are only 40 per cent occupied so I am focused on that.

I want to remind all of you that when the Meadowlands was on the verge of closing I stepped up and built a beautiful brand new facility. Never in a million years did I expect not to be supported by the trainers and drivers.

The first thing everyone said to me when I took over is, “You have to get rid of the drug guys.” I took that to heart and spent over $1.5 million of my own money to put these guys in jail. As you know, three of the biggest criminals, Allard, Banca and Oakes are either in jail or on their way to jail.

The fact that we have eliminated the beards does not seem to be helping as apparently you enjoy racing against them at Yonkers, Chester and Pocono. I doubt if any of your owners even go to watch their horses race at those three tracks and would much rather race at the Meadowlands, where we have a beautiful facility and a club for owners that everyone also asked me to include in the design.

I hope to see a major increase this week in entries and for the balance of the year. We intend to limit the number of amateur races to two each week to see if that helps.

I am looking forward to seeing a major improvement beginning next week and hopefully I can count on the industry to do the right thing and support us.

Court setbacks should be wakeup call to USTAI just finished reading the text of the second federal trial court ruling to uphold the constitutionality of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, the federal law designed to clean up horse racing in the United States. You can read it for yourself here.

On Friday (June 3), U.S. District Judge Joseph Hood, of Kentucky, rejected each of the substantive arguments made by the United States Trotting Association and other opponents of the law. Judge Hood agreed with another federal trial judge, James Wesley Hendrix, of Texas, who also upheld HISA in another court case earlier this year. Both judges are very conservative. Both of their rulings are sound and narrow. Both judges are quite unlikely to be reversed on appeal. Both say clearly that the USTA has the loser’s end of the legal argument.

The predictable (and predicted) setbacks in court should serve as a wakeup call to the leadership of the USTA. The association should now withdraw from the expensive and futile litigation and join the rest of the harness racing industry-- hundreds of the sport’s most prominent trainers, owners, and breeders-- in working with federal regulators to come up with sensible rules that will ensure the safety and integrity of Standardbred racing.

It’s not too late for the USTA to do the right thing, change course, and help the rest of us change the status quo and try to fix the drug and cheating problems we all know we have. HISA is here, it looks like to stay, and it deserves a chance to succeed with our participation and guidance.
