Retell Standard Recorder1. Connect mains adapter to socket marked "DC 3V" or insert batteries in the battery

compartment at the base of the recorder. Do not leave batteries in the recorder forlong periods without use. Change the batteries regularly to avoid slow down ofplayback.

2. Insert cassette and ensure it is the right way round. The tape unwinds in thedirection of the arrow on the recorder's lid. When first using your recorder start withside ‘A’ facing you.

3. For automatic recording ensure that the record and play buttons are both pressed inand that AUTO (VOX) is switched to 1 (on). When using the micro recorder thevolume should be turned to maximum. Every time that you lift your telephonehandset the recorder will record. If you want to record manually move the AUTO(VOX) switch to 0 (off) and then press the record button each time that you want tomake a recording.

4. REWind (REView) or FFwd (CUE) allows you to find recordings quickly. You can alsouse this function whilst playing back recordings to move to a part of the tape whereyou missed something or to find a space at the beginning or end of a recording.

5. To pause playback simply press the PAUSE button in. To commence playback releasethe PAUSE button.

6. Recordings can be monitored live on the earpiece. Plug the earpiece into socket

marked with the " " symbol. Do not plug a call recording connector into thissocket.

7. Slow speed recording will extend the recording time on your cassette (at the expenseof sound quality). On the standard cassette recorder position the switch to normalspeed or slow (one third speed). On the micro cassette recorder position the switchto "2.4" for normal speed or "1.2" for slow (half speed). Note: Recordings should beplayed back at the same speed they were recorded.

8. The recorder has a built-in microphone for recording meetings but we recommendthe use of the lapel microphone (Retell part 163) for higher quality recordings.

9. The Standard cassette recorder has a built in tape counters to help you search forand locate recordings quickly.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

The Standard cassette recorder has a switch built into the battery compartment(located below the battery spring) that alters the sensitivity of the automaticrecord function. If you find that your recorder keeps on recording even when youare not using the telephone or does not switch on when you make a call trymoving the switch either towards the battery spring or away from the spring. Youshould find a more suitable level of sensitivity that allows your recorder to switchon and off automatically. If you still experience difficulties then please call ourTechnical Support Dept on 0871 872 4257 to have your recorder adjustedaccordingly.

Advanced ControlsIf after setting-up the Intelligent Recording Interface as above you are not entirely satisfiedwith the recording quality then the explanations below will help you to adjust every aspect ofthe Intelligent Recording Interface. You will need to use the tool supplied to adjust thesecontrols.

Adjuster A adjusts theearpiece level that you hear inthe handset or headset. This should be adjusted to acomfortable level.

Adjuster B adjusts the level of beep injection, this iswhere if both parties go silent during a conversation theconnector injects a beep and if it hears its own beep itknows the phone is off hook and the recorder will stillrecord. This allows you to record pauses in aconversation.

Adjuster C adjusts thevolume of your voicethat is recorded on thetape, if the far party isrecorded louder thanthe near party thenturn C clockwise.

Adjuster D adjusts thevolume of the far partythat is recorded on thetape, if the near party isrecorded louder than thefar party then turn Dclockwise.

Handset Type. This hasbeen preset to 1 for themost common type ofhandset wiring but ifthis is not right for youthen just change to anyof the 5 other settingsuntil your phonehandset works.

By adjusting C or D it is possible to get aperfectly balanced recording.

Under the black cover there are four switches that control varioussettings.

• Switch 1 and 2 control the VOX off time (the time it takesfor the recording to finish after the telephone call hasfinished). These are factory pre-set to 5 seconds but shouldyou wish to increase/decrease the cut-off time please referto the table below.

Cut-off time Switch 1 Switch 21 second ON ON3 seconds OFF ON5 seconds(default)

ON OFF

10 seconds OFF OFF

• Switch 3 turns on or off beep injection. This is where ifboth parties go silent during a conversation the connectorinjects a beep and if it hears its own beep it knows thephone is off hook and the recorder will still run. This allowsyou to record pauses in a conversation.

• Switch 4 adjusts the mono output level. ON is HIGH outputfor use into a LINE input eg for use into the line in of asoundcard. OFF is LOW output for use into a microphoneinput eg with ALL of Retells cassette recorders.

Problem Possible Cause SolutionWhen playing back a recordedconversation one side soundslouder than the other.

Adjuster C and D are notadjusted correctly.

Please refer to page 3, AdvancedControls, and adjust control Cand D which will alter therecorded near and far party.

My telephone does not workcorrectly when I connect it to theIntelligent Recording Interface.

The handset selector switchis not set correctly.

Refer to page 3, AdvancedControls, and adjust the HandsetType Switch. Position 1 workswith 95% of telephone handsets;position 2 works with about 4%.Should these positions not workthen try positions 3-6 whichcovers the other 1% of handsettypes.

When using my telephone withthe Intelligent RecordingInterface the earpiece soundsquieter/louder than without theIntelligent Recording Interfaceattached to my telephone.

Earpiece level (control A) isnot set correctly.

Refer to page 3, AdvancedControls, and adjust control Auntil the earpiece level issatisfactory.

What are the beeps I keephearing when the conversationgoes quiet as my customer canalso hear it?

This is not a faultIt can be altered by adjustingdip switches – see page 6

If both parties go silent during aconversation the connectorinjects a beep and if it hears itsown beep it knows the phone isoff hook and the recorder willstill run. This allows you torecord pauses in a conversation. If you do not need to record thepauses in a conversation you canturn this function off byswitching switch 3 to OFF.

When playing back a recordingfrom my cassette tape it soundsloud and distorted

The output level is too high Refer to page 6, Advancedcontrols, and switch switch 4 toOFF which will give a loweroutput level which is suitable foruse with Retells cassetterecorders

When I play back my recordingsthere is a buzz on the recordings

Possible interference fromanother source

Make sure that you place theconnector at least 30cms awayfrom any computer monitors

Near party recordings are quietwhilst using a headset with avoice tube

Adjuster C needs adjusting(page 4) or the voice tube isblocked

Alter adjuster C (see page 4). Ifthis does not have any affectthen the voice tube on yourheadset is most probablyblocked, try cleaning/replacing it.
