FINALS PREVIEW

Leongatha and Sale will lock horns in a bid to have the first crack at minor premier Maffra, when they meet in Saturday’s qualifying final at Morwell.

The Parrots warmed up for the clash with an impressive 90-point hiding away to Bairnsdale to continue their strong back half of the season, which has yielded 10 wins in their last 11 games.

The Magpies, meanwhile, squeezed past Morwell by the barest of margins – despite managing six more scoring shots – as their search for their early-season form continued.

In a neat quirk, their head-to-head record stands at one-apiece with both sides managing to defeat the other at their home ground, somewhat minimising the impact of the neutral venue of a qualifying final.

In terms of personnel, Leongatha recalled enigmatic forward Jack Ginnane for last week’s trip to Bairnsdale, but has maintained a healthy and strong list in recent weeks and looks set to be close to full strength heading into the finals series.

Sale on the other hand has seen more turnover in the closing stages of the home and away campaign, with Nic Dowse missing last week’s clash with Morwell and ruckman Jack Lipman a late withdrawal, however the Magpies did welcome back gun midfielder Kane Martin.

There are no second chances for Moe or Drouin, who will contest the elimination final at Ted Summerton Reserve on Sunday.

Neither side heads into the game in standout form, but Drouin’s run-in to finals has been most concerning, win just one win in its past five.

Moe also made light work of the Hawks in both home and season meetings, recording a thumping 92-point win at Ted Summerton Reserve in round two.

At their best, the Lions have been one of the most impressive outfits this season, but consistency has left lingering questions about their premiership aspirations.

Senior regulars James Blaser, Ben Morrow and Joel Bragagnolo missed last week’s clash with Warragul, but all are expected to return along with Bernie Vince for the do-or-die clash, while Jordan Ceppi was a welcome inclusion last week.

Few changes are expected from the Hawks, with coach Jordan Kingi continuing to make the most of what’s available to him.

All evidence points towards a Moe win, but it was a similar story two years ago when Drouin surprised Warragul in an elimination final, so the Hawks should definitely not be taken lightly.

5 YEARS AGO … 30TH & 31ST AUGUST, 2014After a brilliant burst of football in the first quarter where ten goals were kicked, Maffra set up its win over Bairnsdale in the Elimination Final in the second and third terms. The Eagles, with star goalkicker Darren Sheen in great form, came from a two point deficit to a handy 21 point lead going in to the final quarter. Apart from Sheen, Maffra were well served by onballer Alex Carr, defender James Huts and ruckman Owen Booth. Bairnsdale were best served by Brett Waddell, Dale Johnson and three goals from Jack Haslam. Sale always seemed to have Wonthaggi’s measure in the Qualifying Final, however the Magpies weren’t safe until the final quarter. Their seven point quarter time lead grew to 22 by half time and 24 by the final break. With Jason Gram (4 goals) and Matthew Ferguson (3) drawing on their AFL experience with St Kilda, Sale surged away in the final quarter to win by 43 points. Youngster Josh Dunkley, now starring with the Western Bulldogs, showed all his skills, with Kane Martin in good support. Wonthaggi defender Byron Dryden was the best for the Power, along with Matt Coyne and Shannon Bray.

10 YEARS AGO … 29TH & 30TH AUGUST, 2009Drouin’s first finals series in this league was short-lived when they went down to Leongatha. Despite having one scoring shot more than the Parrots, the Hawks came up 29 points short. The discrepancy in accuracy was most noted after half time when Leongatha kicked 7.2 to Drouin’s 4.10. Marc Truscio was a winner for Leongatha in the middle, while the Parrots defence, led by Clint Johnston with support from Adam Govers, Paul LePage and Sean Westaway, kept sustained pressure on Drouin’s forwards. Pat McGrath played a four quarter game for Drouin with Sam Proctor giving his all. Moe, led by seven goals from Matt Forys, reversed the trend of two home and away losses against Maffra. The Lions trailed Maffra narrowly at quarter time, but manged to get their noses ahead by half time. The win was set up in the third quarter when they kicked four goals to the Eagles’ one to enter the final term with a thirty point lead. While Forys was clearly the best

afield, Moe was well served by ruckman Chris Hancock and the smaller brigade of Peter Ainsworth and Robert Michaelides. Sam Tudor and Josh Stubbe led the Maffra effort with forward Adrian Burgiel their top goalkicker with four majors.

20 YEARS AGO … 28TH & 29TH AUGUST, 1999Moe and S ale entered the Elimination Final with Sale the warm favourite as they had beaten Moe, narrowly, on both meetings throughout the home and away season. The Magpies scored the first two goals of the game, with Moe taking more than half the quarter to get their first major on the board. Their first, by Keaton DeVent, was followed by another to Adam Kennedy within a minute. Late in the term another two to Chris Smogavec and full forward Jordan Meikle gave the Lions the lead that they wouldn’t surrender. The Sale midfield, led by Brad Wynd, worked hard, but couldn’t match it with Moe, who slammed on eight goals in the second term. Jason Shields and Troy Makepeace were unstoppable in the middle, with Dean Caldow and Chris Smogavec (5 goals each) leading the way up forward for the Lions. The previous day Wonthaggi, at home in front of a record Qualifying Final crowd, won a battle of attrition with fellow South Gippsland side Leongatha. Heavy conditions greeted the players, a factor that many thought would favour the Blues. It was Leongatha who made the early running with two goals in each of the opening two terms while holding Wonthaggi to a single first half goal. The Blues weren’t helped by them having two players yellow carded during the second quarter, forcing them to play that term with 17 on-field players. With light rain falling the Blues were lifted by two long goals from Rod Tack, Wonthaggi gaining a slender lead by three quarter time. Goals to Darren Beesey and Ross Lovett were answered by the Parrots through Darren Read and Adrian Campbell, the winner coming from Wonthaggi’s Adam Mabilia.

30 YEARS AGO … 26TH AUGUST, 1989The 1989 Finals Series was one of record crowds, with the march of the Maffra side the obvious reason. The Eagles had bumped Warragul out of the Four in the final round, and they hit the business end of the season running. Coach Daryl Cunningham was at his inspirational best in the 1st Semi-Final against the arch-rival Sale. Sale was quick out of the blocks, Brad Sparks in great form in the midfield. Sparks kicked two first quarter goals and was instrumental in forward Steve Dunkley kicking three. After Sale had shellshocked Maffra with their opening quarter burst, the Eagles fought their way back into the game to be just ten points down at half time. Cunningham, realising that it could all go awry again without a big third term, kicked the first three goals of that stanza, giving Maffra the lead. Peter Geddes won the ruck battles, showing the form that won him that year’s league best and fairest. As Maffra added 5.2, Sale’s tally of six behinds now saw them trailing by 16 points. Sale rallied briefly in the final quarter, but Shane Allman chimed in for two steadying goals for Maffra to see them home.

40 YEARS AGO … 8TH SEPTEMBER, 1979Maffra and Warragul fought out what was one of the fieriest finals for many years. Although the game was not a spectacle of top class skills, several incidents throughout the course of the match kept the crowd on their toes. An all-in melee got the game started, Maffra jumping the Gulls with nine scoring shots to one. Inaccuracy stopped this being more advantageous, the Eagles ahead by 13 points. Warragul players were succumbing to injury, star centreman Rob Ballingall stunned by some heavy treatment, and Graeme Cook limping off. Warragul managed to get to a point behind at half time, and were still within a goal at the final change of ends. The Gulls’ players were able to match it with most of

their Maffra counterparts, but skipper Jeff Gieschen was simply brilliant. A goal early in the final term to Maffra got their tails up and saw them as good as home, the Eagles adding 4.3 to 1.4 to run out 19 point winners.

50 YEARS AGO … 24TH AUGUST, 1969Perfect conditions greeted the teams at the Sale Oval, Heyfield and Maffra meeting for the first time in a final in the LVFL. A huge crowd, the biggest for a 1st Semi-Final for ten years, rolled up and were treated to an entertaining game. A tight first term saw the Kangaroos with a narrow lead, but a brilliant second quarter saw them add six goals to two to have what appeared a match-winning lead of 35 points at the long break. The Eagles threw everything they had into a third quarter fightback. Bill Bennett, although injured (“on one leg”), led the Maffra charge, kicking three of their seven goals in the third term. Trailing by 13 points, Maffra looked now to have the momentum that might just get them past Heyfield. Led by coach Barry Anderson, Heyfield kept Maffra at bay, with both teams adding two goals and Heyfield advancing to the Preliminary Final.

60 YEARS AGO … 29TH AUGUST, 1959The Grand Final teams of 1958 met in the 1st Semi-Final, with Traralgon managing to keep their noses in front all day. Great work from defender Barry Archbold kept the Trafalgar forwards at bay, with Brian Hammond collecting plenty of kicks in the midfield for Traralgon. Coach “Big Bill” Milroy led by example for Trafalgar, well supported by Peter Purves and Dick Gill. Youngster Jim Shanahan kicked three goals for the Bloods.

Sale 11 C.Aurisch (2006)Notes: Although Leongatha has won nine of the last ten matches they have played against Sale, both games played this year were very much in the balance until deep into the final quarter. The venue has rarely been an issue for either team in this fixture as the ledgers at both Leongatha and Sale are quite even. Their last finals meeting, the Qualifying Final at Warragul last year, was a one sided affair in which Sale was restricted to just two goals for the entire match, the Magpies exiting last year’s finals series in “straight sets”. Leongatha began this year with a lengthy injury list and have steadily been gaining strength as the home and away season unfolded. Sale was the year’s trendsetter with ten wins from their first eleven games, but recent form (they won just three of the last seven games) will be of some concern to all involved.

Drouin 11 C.Dunne (2011)Notes: Moe and Drouin meet today for the very first time in a finals match. On paper it would look as though Moe would be a quite warm favourite, the Lions having won nine of their last eleven matches, whereas the injury depleted Hawks have struggled in the second half of the season with just one win from their last eight outings. Both meetings this year between the two resulted in comfortable wins for Moe with margins of 92 and 43 points in their favour, but the Drouin Hawks are renowned for their fighting qualities and a much closer match than many might expect may well unfold.

GAME OF THE WEEKGAME OF THE WEEK

VISIT THE PORTAL @ AFLGIPPSLAND.TV

At the beginning of the season, the Redlegs' buzz words were "Challenge Accepted"

As we move into fi nals, the club can indeed refl ect on a season full of challenges in both football and netball. It has been a season full of many positives, and there is every reason to look to next season with a genuine sense of optimism.

On the football side, the club is delighted to confi rm that they are rolling over the appointments of all coaches. This is a major positive for us. Not only does it reward the exceptional job each and every one has done, it also ensures continuity and stability for the playing group and the football section as a whole.

As Football Operations Manager Greg McCarrey commented, " This is the fi rst time since Bairnsdale has re-joined the Gippsland League that all 4 grades have coaches locked in by August and with all coaches well advanced on preparations for 2020, we look forward to continued improvement next year and believe we have created a base which we should be confi dent will lead to sustained success going forward.

All 4 coaches have worked very well together with “Club First” mentality and have been happy to put what’s in the best long term interests of player & club ahead of their respective teams short term results. "

It was particularly pleasing that the re-appointments came as the result of a 100% positive feedback from players and parents.

For the Netball Section, it has been a season of transition. There have been some challenging times and some lessons learned, but the club can take massive heart from the way A grade fi nished the season strongly, and from the continued excellent work being done by the junior development program.

Mirroring the ethos of the football section, netball will be looking to embark on a strategy of continuity and succession planning. Preparation for the new season has already commenced, confi rmation of coaching positions is imminent and the club hopes to have a fully operational new sub-committee in place before the off season starts.

To that end, the netball section encourages expressions of interest from anyone who feels they have something positive to contribute to the progress of the club. There are exciting times ahead and it couldn't be a better time to jump on board.

With the regular season over, President Murray Frew also wished to thank everyone involved with the club for their involvement over the last few months.

" For Bairnsdale to be able to even compete in the Gippsland League takes a massive and unifi ed effort from offi cials, coaches, players, volunteers and supporters. The fact that we are not only taking part but are also becoming increasingly competitive is testament to the quality of all those groups. I would like to thank every single one of them.

The introduction of the Reserves this season was a big step and a hugely successful one in terms of the development of our playing squad and I am sure it will bear fruit in seasons to come.

Success on the ground is tangible, but the measure of a good club is also down to its success off it. As a committee and as a club we are committed to creating opportunities for individuals who aspire to compete Football and Netball at the highest level available in Gippsland and beyond.

We are also committed to fostering this in a supportive friendly environment which allows people to grow and achieve, and I think the future is looking good ! "

GOOD LUCK TO ALL TEAMS IN FINALS !!! GO REDLEGS !!!!!

We hosted Wonthggi on our last home game for the year. We were soundly beaten by Wonthaggi in the end who got on top in the last quarter. It didn’t help that we rested 5 players for our pending fi nal. Wonthaggi were really keen to fi nish with a win and played accordingly. We need to be at our best for our fi nal and will be strengthened by some good inclusions in the side selected this week. We need to regroup this week with a win over Moe. Best players were: Barry Plant Award – Tom Barr, Middel’s Award – Todd Beck, Family Hotel Award – Bob McCallum, Kim’s Kitchen Award – Charlie Bethune and Drouin Hawks Award – Rhys Salter.

Our reserves had a good contest against Wonthaggi who topped up their team with some under 18’s. It was a good standard game and we challenged Power to the end. Their depth shone through but again our attitude was really good. The boys were hoping to fi nish with a win but this was a brave loss and they can hold their heads high. Well done to the team, their coaches and team manager Michael Derrick for making sure we had a team for every game this year. Our best players were: Select Offi ce Award – Tyler Dodge Bunn, Warragul Bank Bar – John Perry, Middel’s Award – Nick Burr, Drouin Gourmet Café – Lachie Taylor and Family Hotel Award – Will Bryce.

The under 16’s faced a determined Wonthaggi team who challenged our boys till half time in a pleasing standard game. We were able to show our superiority after the long break and went on to win by 9 goals. Sadly our young Hawks were not playing to secure a place in the fi nal fi ve after our loss to Maffra the previous week. We fi nished the season on a high just missing a fi nals berth but confi dent going forward that we have a quality squad of players who can match the best sides in the competition. Well done to the boys and their coaches on this year’s improvement. We know they will be better for the experience this year. Best players were: Select Offi ce Award – Ethan Busse, Inter Sport Award – Nic

Caddy, Community Bank Award – Kaleb Hermanssen, Community Bank Award – Jacob Sandman, Jakks Pizza Award – Jahmain Harrison.

We would like to recognise some of our senior players as our Club people of the week. Firstly we want to thank Liam Anderson for his work helping with the Pub Raffl e on Friday nights. Also thanks to vice captain Rhys Salter who organised the player roster to assist with the bar. Another great helper was Ryan Taylor who regularly did additional shifts in the Canteen fi lling gaps in our helpers. We really appreciate the additional support we got from these players throughout the season and thank them for their leadership. They are reliable, friendly and are a real asset to our club. They are our Drouin Family Hotel Club People of the Week.

We are looking forward to a positive result today in our fi nal against Moe.

B GRADE Drouin 40 Wonthaggi 48Just like A grade, this week was poor B grade’s turn to be hit by injuries. Nevertheless, the girls on the team showed some real grit and versatility adjusting to changes and working hard all game.

UNDER 13’S Drouin 15 Wonthaggi 34Final game of the season for the 13’s, it was fantastic to have a full side and fi nish with a solid score and performance. Massive improvement from start to fi nish in teamwork and individual performance.

Well it's fi nals time and our talented netball squads have 3 sides in the 2019 fi nals campaign. Our U17 side competes Saturday at Morwell in a Qualifying fi nal whilst 'C' Grade compete on Sunday at Moe. Both contests are against Moe and we expect our girls to give their all - Go Tigers!

Netball - In Round 18 last week at Sale the U17's suffered their 2nd defeat of 2019 but they will bounce back this week with added determination. 'C' Grade followed up the great win over Traralgon with a win at Sale last week and now have strong belief. 'A' Grade were winners at Sale and take a well deserved break this weekend. 'B' Grade, U15's and U13's were beaten at Sale but all have played some very good netball this year and they will be on the side-lines this weekend in full support.

Round 18 Netball Best: - ‘A’ Grade – Courtney Garth & Lexi (150 games) Bowe; B Grade – Em Donoghue & Laura Marino; C Grade – Joey Watson & Kadia Lardner; U'17 – Rahni Styles, Ashlyn Pavey & Jaida Delicato; U'15 –Charlotte DiToro, Mikayla Couling & Emma Darling; U'13 – Amelia Owler, Amelia Riddle & Lucy Riddle.

Football - Our seniors suffered another unlucky loss with Sale kicking a late goal to win by 1 point. The Rezzies fi nished on a winning note and a fi tting farewell for retiring player Shane Winters. Shane has played in excess of 250 1st and 2nds games for MFNC and took no prisoners! Great job Shane. Michael Hall's U18 side did not get over Sale but plenty of upside for the boys in 2019. Sale were too strong for Brett Sherriff's U16 side but a good learning experience for our boys.

Best Players were - (Seniors) – Tank Rosato, Kuiy Jiath & Hanger's Hillier; (Reserves) – Hayden Maximiw, Big Cat Marino & Tom Russell; (U18) – Zac Bezzina, Brandon McAuliffe & Burkely Macfarlane; (U16) – Tristan Waak, Blake Couling & Jake Brown. .

Volunteers Help For Finals - Many Thanks to our team of dedicated volunteers for hosting the Qualifying fi nal this weekend. MFNC will also host the Preliminary Final on Sept 14th at Morwell and we encourage all club members and supporters to put your hand up to help on the day. Watch facebook for a roster of roles to be fi lled.

Save the Date - Sunday Sept 22nd from 10-30am will be the Junior and Senior vote count day. Thursday Sept 26th will be the Club Presentation night at Morwell Bowling Club. See the Morwell Football Netball Club Facebook page for more details.

CLUB NOTES

Well it’s that time of year again, it certainly seems to come around with a rush late in the year. To be playing fi nals is what we all aim for at the start of pre-season, for those who miss out it seems to be a very long wait until it all starts again next year. For those who are playing it is like another season starting now.

As we all know in fi nals it seems things go up a couple of cogs. It is up to all our players to embrace that and give their very best in every contest. Finals are won, not handed to you! Go out there guys and enjoy the occasion and with a bit of luck you will come home with the chocolates.

To everyone playing fi nals in the Gippland Football Netball League we say good luck.

I would like to take this time to acknowledge the work of the two leaders of our sporting pursuits in Mal Mackie and Jeanne Dekker. With 3 football and 5 netball teams making fi nals, the club is extremely well represented in 2019. Both Jeanne and Mal have worked incredibly hard to give the club every opportunity to succeed on fi eld. They are both supported by hard working committees, but certainly, leadership starts at the top and we are very grateful that they are at the Parrots.

Having 5 of our 6 netball sides make the fi nals is such a wonderful achievement, especially after what was a pretty tough year last year. It shows that with some really hard work that it is possible to turn fortunes pretty quickly. We are sprinkled over the both days of the week end so let’s get as many people there as we can to cheer all our girls on.

The thirds have built momentum late in the year and their reward is giving it a crack in the fi nals. Keep applying yourselves lads, listen to the coaches and make sure that you are prepared for the contest.

The Seniors and Reserves are working of a base of playing a lot of fi nals football over the last few years. We trust that you guys know and understand what is required to make your campaign successful. Good luck boys!

To our fantastic supporters who ride all the bumps with our players during the year. We thank you for your efforts and support. You travel with us religiously and your support means so much to us.

CLUB NOTES

Last week at Traralgon saw our seniors consolidate top spot and book a home second semi for themselves and the two’s. While the maroons persisted and never stopped trying we secured our 11th win in 12 games in a consistent run of football.

Best players were Jack Johnstone, Edward Carr, Alex Carr and Winston Gieschen,

The Two’s game was as good as a fi nal with both sides playing fi nals standard football, our guys coming away with the win.

Best players were Curtley Nettleton, Sam Bedggood, Kal Killoran, Ryan Thatcher, Tom Schacht and Brent McKenzie.

Traralgon were too good for us in the Thirds but still Bedgy’s lads have played well enough for a crack at the Qualifying Final. Good Luck Boys!

Best Players were Max Gravener, Tom Thatcher, Floyd Fulton, Max VanDerZwart, John Booker and Declan Scriven.

The Fourths fi nished up their season outside the fi ve and while disappointing for those guys next year looks a lot brighter! Big thanks to Trent and Dale for all the time and effort they have invested in these lads.

Best players were Zane Perkins, Seb Pendergast, Harry Langford, Jack Kelly, Ben Missen and Ethan Aurisch.

It was a tough day on the court against Traralgon on the weekend with Maffra only taking away 2 wins for the day.

In the Under 13’s it was the battle of 2 v’s 3 and after a tough four quarters Traralgon came out on top winning 37 – 34. Bests for Maffra were Tayli Dimarco, Chloe Rees and Tilly Pendergast. The 13’s fi nished the season second on the ladder.

The Under 15’s continued on their winning ways taking away a 21 goal win 47 to Traralgon’s 26. Bests for Maffra were Kheali Oldham and Chelsea Allman. The 15’s have fi nished comfortably second for the season.

The Under 17’s was always going to be a close one between Maffra and Traralgon and they didn’t less us down. After multiple lead changes, Traralgon took the

win by 2, 40-38. Bests for Maffra were Chloe Proud and Zara Flynn.

C Grade should have been an easy game for Maffra however Traralgon had other ideas and played a strong game. Traralgon kept up with pour C Graders all game but Maffra came through in the end winning by one goal, 34-33. Bests for Maffra were Steph Howson and Chloe Proud. C Grade fi nished the season on top of the ladder.

B Grade knew it was going to be a tough game with Traralgon being the top team, they kept with them up to half time but Traralgon pushed the lead out and took the win 70-34. Bests for Maffra were Sarah Edey and Hannah Bourke.

A Grade stayed with second placed Traralgon all game and had the lead heading into half time. Traralgon needed to make some major moves to beat the girls which they did and took the win 52-45. Bests for A Grade were Montana Holmes, Faith Biddle and Emma Allman.

We wish our Under 13’s, 15’s and C Grade the best for the fi nals along with our Footy teams and hope we can bring home 3 Premierships from the Court.

Saturday night saw club stalwart Elaine Sage stage a Mock Wedding, people witnessed a hilarious night of entertainment!

CLUB NOTES

MOEThere was a fi nals-like atmosphere at Moe last Saturday as some sunny weather hopefully gave us a precursor to what is to come for September. A packed house saw a great acoustic session put on by Tezmo and Clint Warner both at halftime and after the senior match, with Tezmo’s rendition of the club song a particular highlight.

Our major raffl e was also drawn last Saturday night. Thanks to all players, supporters and members who sold tickets during the season and particular thanks to the Revered Clinton Taylor for his work behind the scenes.

With the home and away season done the attention now turns to those teams who have earnt the right to play fi nals. If you are reading this and the day is Saturday we have our under 17s, B Grade and A Grade netballers playing. If you are reading this and the day is Sunday it will be an action packed day at Moe as we have the Seniors, Reserves and under 16 footballers on show, as well as C Grade and under 13 netball. Not to mention over at Morwell East we have the under 14s and Youth Girls fi ghting it out for the premiership in their respective competitions. Best wishes to all involved!

FootballA quick shout out to Brett Paynter who has been the man behind the camera all season fi lming both the senior and reserve games. Brett has shot close to 80 hours’ worth of footage which has been greatly appreciated and helped the players and coaches dissect each game.

SeniorsGot the job done in a match that never really reached any heights. Warragul looked determined to fi nish their season on a high and were on the brink of causing a boil over at three quarter time before Moe did enough in the last to claim victory. Best wishes to Darnell Grech and Josh Wilson who were dealt a cruel hand the week before fi nals and may be facing an extended period on the sidelines. Best players were Grady Cocksedge, Lachlan MacLeod, Tyson Biffi n, the Van Dyk brothers and Jacob Wood. Congratulations to Zac Skinner who made his senior debut.

ReservesMade it 11 wins for the regular season to fi nish in the same ladder positon as the seniors. The Lions led from start to fi nish with all able to enjoy the sunshine and each other’s company. Best players were Sam Cougle, Jay Murphy, Josh Pearce, Harri Sim, Bryce Collings and Luke Mackay.

Under 18sFinished the season in unspectacular fashion, going down to Warragul by 45 points. The under 18s have done it tough this season but have been admirable in the way in which they have confronted each game with some enthusiasm. Thanks to their efforts they have also helped the reserves and the core group of under 18 players who have battled their way through the season have hopefully enjoyed the wins along the way and won’t get lost to footy as work and study commitments face them in coming years. Best players were Lachlan Rock, Jack Walton, Pat Bills, Riley Wiggins, Brock Plunkett and Jarvis Wheller.

Under 16sWould have been hoping for a better showing in what ended up being a disappointing display. With a double chance on the line Moe squandered an early lead as Warragul controlled the match after the fi rst break. Best players were Riley Moore, Joe Skinner, Jacob Balfour, Brandon Watson, Callan Hawkett and Dylan Thornby.

Under 14sThe Jason Shields coached under 14s won through to the grand fi nal of the Central Gippsland Junior football league following their 50 point win over Leongatha Green in last Sunday’s preliminary fi nal. The team will need to defeat the other Leongatha team (Gold) to take the title.

Moe fi nished the home and away season on top of the ladder and will be aiming to cap off their season in the best possible way. Hopefully we will see a number of the team’s top age players in our under 16s next season.

Youth GirlsThe youth girls also booked their grand fi nal ticket after defeating Mirboo North.

Despite some inaccuracy in front of goals, Moe led throughout their preliminary fi nal contest in a low scoring game, eventually winning by 13 points.

A hallmark of the team that has noticeably lifted in recent times has been their tackling pressure, which is something the side will be aiming to bring for the grand fi nal against local rival Newborough Blues.

Netball

A Grade (from Peter Moody)Had a good, tough hit-out against quality opposition in the last game before fi nals and a battle for the double chance. Played with a fi nals intensity, the girls were challenged early and were down at halftime. We wrestled the ascendency in the third quarter and held on for a gutsy seven goal win 44-37. Best players were Sammy Waters, Shannon Freeman and Georgia Moody.

B GradeCame away with a draw after a desperate last quarter comeback saw the Lions come close to stealing the points. An edge-of-your-seat fi nish concluded with a goal from Maleah Travers going through the net literally milliseconds before the fi nal whistle was blown to tie the score at 32 all. Best players were Haley Taylor and Cheree Carney.

C GradeSecured their position in the top fi ve with a determined 36 to 31 win. Needing to defeat fellow fi nals contender Warragul in the fi nal round, the side used their strong home court record to get across the line. The evenness of the C Grade competition is evidendenced by the fact only one win separates second from fi fth, meaning the race for the premiership is wide open. Best players were Elise Demczuk, Patty McInnes and Destiny Mackrell.

Under 17sGot over the line in a close encounter 32 to 28. The team fi nished the season in third positon and as a result, earnt the double chance.

Under 15sFinished the year on a high, winning 44 to 17, and will now get to put their feet up until preseason. Best players were Olivia Rock, Erin Warner and Calli Koch.

Under 13s Cemented their fi nals position with a 30 to 18 win. The team entered the match on a knifes edge, needing to claim victory to ensure itself of a place in the post regular season action. Best players were Haylee Wilson and Tily King.

CLUB NOTES

Under glorious sunny skies last week, we welcomed the Eagles to our patch, with us taking the honours 4-2 on the courts and sharing the spoils on the oval. Both of our junior footy teams have earned a week off (much needed by the 3rds) for fi nishing top of the table, well done to all. In the U/16’s, an 11 goal opening “blitz” against a depleted opposition set the tone for the game, extending their lead at each break to take the points comfortably. Best were Jacob Cunico (7 goals), Kade Ruyters, Hunter Watson, Ryan Wilson, Harvey Howe and Sam Hallyburton.

Taking on 3rd placed Maffra, the U/18 boys were on a mission and jumped the young Eagles early to be up by 27 at the fi rst change. Maffra regrouped and it was goal for goal in the middle terms, before our guys kept them scoreless in the fi nal term, whilst booting 4 themselves to fi nish off with a solid victory. Best players were Thomas Webster, Darion Duncan, Liam Deering, Cohen Ruyters, Jayson Musgrove and Luis D’Angelo.

It was fi rst v second in the “magoo’s” with Maffra in control for most of the game, kicking 5 in the opening stanza to our 2, with the second term much more even on the scoreboard. The second half saw our guys battle manfully against a “slick” opposition who extended their lead in both quarters to run out winners by 6 goals. Best were named as Thomas McMahon, Wilson Gaudion, Justin Barnes, Ben Cheetham, Rick Battista and Bobby Marshall.

In the Seniors, despite missing a few of their stars, Maffra showed why they are top of the ladder with an ominous (but inaccurate) opening terms to be all over us early. To our inexperienced teams credit, they did not lay down, but worked hard and kept plugging away, keeping the margin in check at the same time. Whether the “Eagles” put the cue in the rack or not, we outscored them in the 2nd half in a great sign going forward to eventually go down by 7 points. Best were Jackson Hall, Mark Collison, Adam Jaensch, Haydn Hector, Dylan Loprose and Chance Doultree.

Over on the courts our A Grade ladies had a tight tussle over their lower placed opposition, before taking the points (52-43), whilst our B Graders will enjoy a week off after a big (70-33) win. C Grade had another 1-point loss (33-34) and unfortunately just missed a fi nals spot as did our U/17 girls who fi nished off the season well with a hard fought win (40-38). The U/15 girls went down (26-47) to the 2nd placed Eagles to fi nish 5th on the ladder and our U/13 “mini maroons” had a great win (37-34) over 2nd placed Maffra to hold onto 3rd position and the double-chance in fi nals. Awards to Ramayer Gourley, Caitlan Ponton, Stacey O’Brien (A); Alyce Murphy, Bree Guttridge, Kasey Guttridge (B); Amy Husson,

Amie Jackson, Loren Ponton (C Grade); Lauryn King-Church, Heidi Gaudion, Isabelle Bettridge (U/17); Emma Farley, Montanna Styles, Chelsea Webster (U/15); Ava Melbourne, Charlie Hamilton and Grace Van Tilburg (U/13).

Congratulations – Milan Maaka (100 Junior Games)

A wonderful effort and well done from all at TFNC.

Youth Girls

Last Sunday our Youth Girls took on the reigning Premiers Sale-City and after an even 1st quarter, our girls kicked up another gear booting 6 goals to none to record a 31-point victory; and a berth in the Grand Final at Stratford on the 8th September. Best players were Matilda Van Berkel, Lily-Rose Williamson, Chelsea Hooper, Molly Van Berkel, Emmerson Taylor, Paris Tracey and Jorja Halsall.

Dates to Remember

Vote Count – Sunday 22nd September – Further details to come.

Presentation Night – Thursday 26th September – See Club FB page for more details.

This weekend 3 of our teams will enjoy a rest before resuming their quests for a fl ag, with 3 of our netball teams and our Reserves footballers aiming to take the next step forward. Good luck to our 4 sides, and indeed all that are competing in the fi rst week of fi nals.

Go Maroons!

CLUB NOTES

That’s a wrap for our regular season, thanks to all player, supporters and volunteers for season 2019, and goodluck to all our teams that are heading into September action this season.

Our Fourths have had a stellar season lead by head coach Kane Fraser. The boys were fine tuning their game last week against Morwell and finished with a win 10.7-67 to 3.4-22. Best- O.Waugh, E.Carter, T.Birss and H.Pearce.

The Thirds had a very unlucky end to the season, a win may have got them into the finals but no one expected ‘Gatha to put our boys back to 6th with such a percentage gap. With the boys consistently missing players that got a call up to seniors, it was a tough season. Sale won their last game 11.12-78 to morwell 7.9-51. Best- M.Jones, K.Simpson, B.Safstrom and M.Bown

The Magoo’s shown plenty of heart last week and a last quarter goal run couldn’t get the boys over the line. Be good to see all the same faces next season and maybe get some fresh boys to help stock up our twos brigade. Sale 6.7-43 to 8.7-55. Best- C.Morrison, T.Hector, B.Smith and T.Dessent.

Senior boys started off with some inaccurate kicking and Morwell took advantage in the 2nd quarter to stun the Sale boys by halftime. Fyfe rallied the troops at the half and a 30-0 3rd term meant the game was there for either team to take. Young Gun and best on ground Jack McLaren then went beast mode and took over in the last quarter and put the older and more experienced team mates on his back and dragged the boys over the line for a one-point win to finish off the season. Sale 7.17-59 to 8.10-58. Other best- J.Gooch, L.Williams and J.Dessent.

Mixed results from last weekend in perfect weather saw wins to our junior teams and B grade who are all heading into the finals period. Good luck girls!!!!!!

U13s played a great game, a perfect lead into finals. We’re all looking forward to playing at Maffra next week. The girls have hit their best form at the right time of the season. Awards K.Robinson, A.Light and S.Williams.

15s went into the game against Morwell with players out and injuries. With big shoes to fill Ally Beale and Sienna Wynd stepped up from 13s. Another great

display of teamwork, training and a will to win the 15s have gone through the season undefeated. Awards I.Waugh, R.Dillon and T.Hansford.

What a great final run home taking out top spot from ladder leaders all season Morwell by 6 goals - the u17 girls have been building up towards rd 18 working hard on & off the court. Now to continue our winning streak through September. Best- L.Barnett sponsor Ozmosis, K.Jackson sponsor PJack Constructions & G.Ronchi.

That’s a wrap for our C grade girls. Well done to everyone for a good season. The girls had a slow start but to their credit they never gave up. Our strong defence kept us in the game although it wasn’t quite enough to get us over the line. Thanks to Morwell for a good game of netball final score 22-29. Awards - Shauna Anderson, L.Stoffels and C.Saddington sponsor Laws of Fitness.

B GRADE. A great display of a team game with support coming from both teams to encourage our juniors. The amazing effort shown by all will inspire and give confidence as we start our finals campaign! Awards K.Jackson sponsor PJAck Constructions, K.Craft and E.Ronchi sponsor Portside.

A grade put up a gallant last game against the ladder leaders. Super proud of this team and the achievements we’ve made along the way. Awards to Ruby Phillips, Tori Dessent sponsor Lighthouse and Co and Kristy Glover sponsor The Window Gallery.

Good Luck to all our teams today!! GO PIES!!

CLUB NOTES

WARRAGULThe last game of the year for our senior players was an opportunity to go out on a high and give the Gulls faithful something to cling to over the summer months ahead. Moe on the other hand were intent on topping off their good year with a win and prepare for their finals tilt. The strong wind blowing across the ground made scoring difficult in all grades of footy and netball. Moe were a tad inaccurate in the senior football and the Warragul side contributed to that with hard tackling especially in the second half. It was the home side by 14 points in the end against a spirited Warragul. Nick Mulqueen is off to the Courthouse after his fine game with our Best and Fairest winner in Kim Drew winning the Downtowner award. Sam Whibley was super again and deserves his Railway award. Our reserves finished the year with a loss to a good Moe side who were keen to consolidate their finals position. They will have a few to come back in when the senior side have the injuries sorted and be a strength in the September action. Our lads had a good side most of the year but failed to come together as a team with injuries to senior players robbing their playing stocks. Scott Kelly has been in top form and was our best. Leigh Smith got the Frankies award with Jake Orlicki to enjoy his Maloneys Pizza award. Well done to Jake on his Best and fairest win in the reserves. Thoroughly deserved for this fine young man. Our thirds finished the home and away rounds one game shy of top spot. It’s been a tremendous season for them and they made short work of Moe to top them up for finals action. Paddy Mulqueen got the Somers Carpentry award with another fine game. Wil Gown is off to Wild Dog Pizza with Lachie Wilson dining at Maccas. The under 16s got the days proceedings off to a flyer in their game. Despite the home side outscoring us in the first quarter it was 11 goals to 3 after that giving the young Gulls a solid 42 point victory. Rhys Galvin was excellent along with Vinnie Caia who contributed 4 goals to get him the Sharkeys Uppercuts award. Netball: History says that our netballers have never had the 3 senior sides in finals together. That is a wonderful testimony to the hard work of all the

grades who have worked so hard and are a very united bunch. Well done ladies. However, our A grade missed out by 7 goals against a good Moe side despite the best efforts of Mia McGaritty and Myah Healey. B grade played out a 32 goal draw with Eboni Wall and Alanis Joyner doing well. The C grade game was a thriller with our girls missing out by 5 but well on track for finals action. Good on Jess Gleeson and Cindy Dawson for their efforts. Our 17s, 15s and 13s couldn’t quite manage a win in the final round but what a wonderful group of girls they are. All grades have had heaps of support and will be better for the experience going forward. Thank you to their coaches and parents.

Finals Action: The Gull family will be well represented over the first weekend of finals with our under 18s and under 16s football sides together with our A, B and C grade netball sides right in the thick of it all.

Our club wishes not only our teams the best of luck, but all clubs who have worked so hard to make the 2019 season the great success it has been.

To all the Dads out there, happy Fathers Day for Sunday and celebrate another fine round of footy and netball with your families on game day. GO GULLS.
