“Building on a child’s ability to feel joy, rather than pushing it aside, wouldn’t be that hard. It would just require a shift in the education world’s mindset. Instead of trying to get children to buckle down, why not focus on getting them to take pleasure in meaningful, productive activity, like making things, working with others, exploring ideas, and solving problems? These focuses are not so different from the things to which they already gravitate and in which they delight... !...The more dire the school circumstances, the more important pleasure is to achieving any educational success. Joy should not be trained out of children or left for after-school programs. The more difficult a child’s life circumstances, the more important it is for that child to find joy in his or her classroom. "Pleasure" is not a dirty word. And it’s not antithetical to the goals of K-12 public education. It is, in fact, the sine qua non...” !

TM!!!to be a person is to have a story to tell

~ Isak Dineson !!Dear Madame/Sir, !Thank you for inviting us to share information with you about Global Scribes™, our global youth initiative to foster international friendships and cultural understanding through collaborative programs embracing the power of the written word over diverse mediums. !As our world continues to ride the global trajectory, teaching our children to both cherish and embrace the world’s many different cultures, as well as, sharing their own, is more important than ever before. Global Scribes connects multiple youth across platforms through school clubs, classrooms and even individually. In addition, anyone of any age may add their story to our website as the spark word changes! !Global Scribes was founded by Cynthia English and launched November 26, 2014. A global citizen from the age of ten–Cynthia’s childhood was spent on multiple continents. Through her experiences with different cultures, combined with her love for adventure literature such as the stories of Christopher Columbus, William Adams, King Mu, Chaka of the Zulus and even Pippi Longstocking, she learned early on that people are people, everywhere. Music and stories–lives lived and shared with laughter and love and joy vibrate across borders as easily as those of more dubious frames. To this end, English believes through the power of collaboration on projects which interest and highlight our global youth apart from religion and politics and socio-demographic segregation, the fears of ‘different’ dissolve and trusted friendships evolve. Global Scribes serves as a global peace initiative #YouthUnitingNations. Currently, we are being used by the IB World School language class in North Carolina and our first GSC Club is being launched by students at St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire. We are adding schools from around the globe weekly. Our GS Youth-Led Teams provide the basics of working together, be it on GS:IM radio broadcast, or GLOBALx video, GS YouTube, GS: Scribes, GS Instagram or other teams, encompassing story writing, music, radio, video, art, photography, architecture–all things cultural. !We have quickly discovered this is a successful format, however, we need your help to keep our growth flourishing and our global youth engaged, by bringing Global Scribes into your school. You may spark children’s interest in a global community, in a friendship they may never have forged, as well as, provide a supervised place for youth to connect with one another. Please share your story on globalscribes.org. !Thank you for taking the time to consider our request. Please join us as Youth Uniting Nations™ lead the world into a more tolerant, open place. !We look forward to speaking with you! Kind regards, !Tracy Clark Holman Educational Institution Outreach Ambassador [email protected] @globalscribes

She also directed and choreographed for her dance company Improv, Inc. Julie was the Santa Barbara News Press dance critic for 18 years, and has written for “Dance Teacher” and “Dance Magazine.” Julie has a multi-decade background in dance as a performer. In New York she studied at Juilliard with Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Doris Humphrey and Anthony Tudor. She regularly serves on Task Forces for the betterment of arts and artists in Santa Barbara. Art Without Limits is her current nonprofit project that’s in its fourth year. It is developing one-on-one long-term mentorships with professional artists, who are paired with emerging artists in all of the arts, including performing, visual, literary, media and administration. The young artists work with their mentor on their art form, attend concerts, galleries, learn to critique, do outreach projects and attend seminars with business-related experts in arts law, contracts, grant writing, finding funds, and have a chance to have their work seen — all of which equips them for a successful career. Other programs have been developed, such as shorter mentorships, high school peer-to-peer mentorships, fiscal sponsorship for artists and collaborations with other organizations for the annual Art Career Day Conference. Julie is currently acting as the executive director, searching for talent and mentors in all fields, as well as funding development. Julie firmly believes that given the guidance and support of a mentor and the tools, talented artists can believe in themselves and have a successful career. !!

!!!Susan Callister Beer !

Susan is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Turtles & Ravens LLC. It was founded on the guiding philosophy that art – in its many forms of expression - is a universal language that is a catalyst for communication. It goes beyond borders – national, religious, cultural, language, socio-economic, etc. – becoming a cohesive, bonding force, uplifting the human spirit and increasing the mutuality of human interaction. Beginning with the artist and progressing to the viewer, each make their own interpretations and responses. Thus, art celebrates unity in diversity and the very best in all of us through creativity and revelation, and can be a vital, positive catalyst for change.

Through her own foundation, she has worked with such not-for-profits as Trees for Life & Books for Life, the Micro-Credit Summit & the Grameen Bank, Four Worlds International, and others focusing on the poorest of the poor in developing countries vis a vis education, health, and micro-finance with education of our youth being the key to sustainable development.

Susan has, also, co-founded a not-for-profit at the United Nations encouraging the families of diplomats to become involved in volunteerism as well as a not-for-profit to build schools in Africa. She has served on the Board of a hospital and of a university, and lectured to high school seniors on education vis a vis employment opportunities. She is a long time member of the Women’s International Forum.

Beyond this, Susan has managed companies in the financial industry, founded a seasonal handicraft business, and written a book upon her husband’s passing titled MOVE ON WITHOUT ME encouraging those who have experienced loss to move on with gratitude for what was, remembering to remember, and transforming where necessary negatives into learning experiences.

Susan is a native New Yorker and holds an M.B.A. from Long Island University. She is, also, a global citizen with an extended family of godchildren representing diverse nationalities, cultures and beliefs/traditions from Christian, Buddhist, and Native American, to Hindu, Muslim, and, now with her business partner, Judaism. Her totem or insignia since the age of 4 is the turtle. She teases that you may forget her name, but you will never forget her large turtle pins. With her ever-present philosophy of “everything ventured, everything gained,” she is always ready to fly, to experience something new–to do!

! Cynthia English !Founder and Visionary for Global Scribes™, Cynthia has devoted 2014/2015 to moving Global Scribes forward through its’ evolution, in its mission, in the Beta phase and toward 100% funding in order to bring her global vision to life on its’ virtual platform. She has had a life.long interest in world people and their cultures and seeks to share her values. Cynthia spent the first 22 years of her diverse career in the fashion industry traveling worldwide sourcing vendors, managing manufacturing, shopping stores for inspiration, overseeing product design, as well as buying for retail stores on behalf of some of the largest global fashion brands. She has been responsible for businesses ranging in $volume from $4.0m to $86.0m in sales and/or inventory value. Both a passionate writer at heart–having written her first book at age 8, "Ralph the Mouse"–and an entrepreneur since the age of 21, her creative spirit began to take hold after leaving the corporate world behind. She opened a small interior design company, her apartment was highlighted on the New York Junior League Spring House Tours and she created great dates™, a concept focused on building closer relationships through shared experience, which targeted multiple platforms including print, television and the internet. great dates™ was picked up by the Hallmark Channel and then subsequently dropped when Crown Media shifted their opening strategy to classic re.runs. Cynthia’s life continues to evolve as she explores cultural interchange in every corner of the globe–from climbing the pyramids of Tikal, Guatemala to inspecting vanilla vines in Bali to being a volunteer in Zambia for Habitat for Humanity to trekking over 800 km solo from St. Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela, across El Camino, St. James' Way. In an about-face from her high-glamour fashion roots, she learned how to survive with one change of clothing, the shoes on her feet (and her pink flip-flops), thus opening doors to an entirely new world of adventure brimming with freedom, more privilege, and everyday miracles. Cynthia graduated from the Marshall School, University of Southern California, with a degree in International Finance. Fortunate to attend the Aspen Writer's Conference, and Oxford University's School of Continuing Education for Creative Writing, she learned to champion criticism, stay unique, and to keep striving to- ward exceptional. Most recently, she received an Executive Certificate in Executive Leadership for NonProfits from Duke University. Taking inspiration from her many and widely varied adventures, she has had articles published in the United States and Europe, her first thriller novel was published in the United States in 2010 and she is now pursuing her childhood passion–writing and outreach. Cynthia heeds the impassioned plea of a young woman named Honig, whom she met on a train between Budapest and Bucharest–"please, never stop delivering world adventure to those unable to make the journeys themselves." And to this end, embracing the human dynamics and cultural riches she has known, she perseveres through life's lessons to provide powerful messages of love, acceptance of different and distinct lives, and preservation of free spirit in all humanity, regardless of origin and culture through the current development of Global Scribes® launched in collaboration with The United Nations Foundation, The 92nd St Y and #GivingTuesday on Thanksgiving Eve, November 26th of 2014. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

! Jason C. Teetz Jason C. Teetz is a communications and media student from Germany, studying in the Netherlands and now back from a semester abroad in Beijing, China. Coming from an international background, being both German and American, he has always been interested in differences in cultures throughout the world. Jason was raised among a rainbow of people, teaching him that diversity is something inspiring and, furthermore, something that he thrives off of–it inspires him! After growing personally with every step taken in new places around the world, moving to another country to attend university seemed like the only logical follow-up. Enjoying the international and multicultural environment at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, he quickly learned (and continues too...) the far.reaching possibilities that lie within embracing intercultural understanding. Due to a love and appreciation for music, cinematography, and media in general, Jason sees the potential of connecting individuals worldwide through their passion for these artistic formats. Jason is a GS co-Leader for GS:IM. He has set.up and run, with a team of global scribes, our 24/7 GS International Radio/Broadcast GS:IM. !

My favorite art styles are Dadaism, Abstraction and Fauvism. Some of my favorite artists are: Joan Miro, Jean-Michel Basquait, Piet Mondrian and Henri Matisse. ! Giles Rutson !I’m told that I was often in the Baby Bjorn pouch attached to either of my parents as they had their hands free for tickets, passports and luggage while we traveled since I was an infant. By the time I was only 6, I’d been to England, Islands in the Caribbean, Germany, France and Brazil. And it was always more than tourist travel, as during most of our trips, we would live the life and be exposed to the culture of the family and/or friends we visited. At age three, I was attempting Portuguese phrases while in Sao Paulo for Christmas visiting my Brazilian Godfather; and at age six, I’d found and played for hours with a new friend in my aunt’s hometown, Heidelberg, even though we did not speak one word of each other’s language. I’ve continued to travel and embrace different lands and cultures, with a highlight being my weeks teaching English outside of Madrid this year; and I have also made sure that this passion has held a big place in my life right at home through my many years’ involvement in Model U.N. Being a part of Global Scribes™ is such an honor and it is also an organization that fits my interests and what I believe in. I am so happy to be a part of it in the early stages because I know it will grow. All of us youth will contribute to that growth and that’s a good feeling! Giles is currently sailing & on crew. !
