From your Vicar ……

Jesus said, “Let the children come to me and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these” Matt.19:14

The month of November is specifically related to children. Reformed Churches all over the world point attention towards children through the Lectionary and Liturgy on the first Sunday of November. In India the 14th of November is the occasion to celebrate ‘Children’s Day’.

Now-a-days, children are getting sufficient social attention and protection through socio-legal systems. At a time contrary to ours, Jesus paid attention and shed appreciation on children and made an un-equivocal comment that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as children.

Children are not merely tolerated, but are regarded as models of how the Kingdom of God should be received. The Kingdom belongs not only to them but also to “such as these” – to all who receive it without presumption and self justification. How can we become like children? Do we possess the notable characters of children such as dependability, friendship, straightforwardness, and willingness to grow? Unconditional dependency to God, friendship which qualifies our life, straightforwardness in our words and actions and earnest willingness for spiritual growth are the messages we have to assimilate from this years’ World Sunday School Day celebrations.

As per the Synod decision, our Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Euyakim Mar Coorilos Thirumeni, after completion of seven years in this Diocese , is leaving the Diocese and taking charge as the Episcopa of the Diocese of Kottayam – Kochi with effect from 1st of January, 2009. Let us thank God for Thirumeni’s relentless service and urge for mission. May the good Lord continue to bless Thirumeni to provide valuable leadership to the Church in the coming days also.

Along with the country, we also observe Thanksgiving Day on Nov.27th Thursday. The genuine thanksgiving is giving thanks to God through our full involvement in the mission of God with all God’s blessings.

Election of office-bearers of the Parish and its organizations is another significant event to be taken place in the month of November. May the Holy Spirit guide and empower us to do everything for the glorification of His name and not for anybody else’s sake.

Nov. 9th is also the Sunday for Suvisesha Nidhi Collection, the only ear-marked collection of the Diocese for Mission activities. Hence I urge you all to participate in this Mission endeavor with all of God’s blessings we have and remember that all our blessings are God’s gifts for God’s work by and through us.

May God help us all to live a life worthy and acceptable before God.

Bible Quiz

* Please note this correction from October’s newsletter:

17. What is Paul saying in Galatians 6 verses 1-3?

Christians should NOT think that they are totally independent and don‟t need the

help of others and no body should feel the excuse from the task of helping others. The

body of Christ, the church, functions properly when the members work together for the

common good.

Bible Quiz Answers for October ~ based on Ephesians 1-3 (Unity in Christ)

Total Points: 38

* The book of Ephesians is divided into 2 parts. Chapters 1, 2, & 3 explain unity in Christ

and chapters 4, 5, and 6 explain unity in the body of Christ.

1. What was Paul’s purpose of writing this letter?

Paul wrote this letter to strengthen the believers in Ephesus in their Christian faith

by explaining the nature and purpose of the church, the body of Christ.

2. Where was Paul when he wrote this book?

Paul was under house arrest in Rome (see Acts 28:16). Though he was a prisoner,

he was free to have visitors and house letters.

3. Name 5 major cities in the Roman empire during this time.

Ephesus, Rome, Corinth, Antioch, and Alexandria.

12

4. When did Paul first visit Ephesus?

He first visited Ephesus on his second missionary journey (Acts 18:19-21).

During his third missionary journey he stayed for almost three years (Acts 19).

5. What is Paul saying in chapter 1 verse 3?

When he said “who was blessed in the heavenly realms with every spiritual

blessing” it means that in Christ we have all the benefits of knowing God – being chosen

for salvation, being adopted as his children, forgiveness, insight, the gifts of the Spirit,

power to do God‟s will, the hope of living forever with Christ.

6. What does Paul mean when he says “chose us in Him” in verse 4?

Paul is trying to emphasize that salvation depends totally on God. We are not

saved because we deserve it, but because God is gracious and freely gives salvation.

We did not influence God‟s decision to save us but He saved us according to His plan.

7. Fill in the blanks based on chapter 1 verse 5: In his infinite love, God has

________________ us as His own _________________.

adopted; children

8. What does “freely given us in the One he loves” in verse 6 mean?

This means that God graciously accepted us now that we belong to his dearly

loved Son.

9. There are two great truths mentioned in verse 7. What are they?

Redemption and forgiveness. Redemption was the price paid to gain freedom for

a slave (Leviticus 25:47-54). Through his death, Jesus paid the price to release us from

slavery to sin. Forgiveness was granted in the Old Testament times on the basis of

shedding animals‟ blood (Leviticus 17:11). Now we are forgiven on the basis of the

shedding of Jesus‟ blood – He died as he perfect and final sacrifice.

10. What is the meaning of grace based on verse 7 and 8?

Grace is God‟s voluntary and loving favor given to those he saves. We can‟t earn

salvation, nor do we deserve it. No religious, intellectual, or moral effort can gain it

because it comes only from God‟s mercy and love. Without God‟s grace, no person can

be saved. To receive it, we must acknowledge that we cannot save ourselves, that only

God can save us, and that out only way to receive this loving favor is through faith in

Christ.

11. Fill in the blank based on chapter 1 verse 13 and 14: The __________________

(two words) is God’s seal that we belong to Him and His deposit guaranteeing that

He will do as he has promised.

Holy Spirit

12. In verses 16 and 17 of chapter 1, what are two specific things did Paul pray for

the believers?

Paul prayed for the believers to know God better through wisdom and revelation.

13

13. According to verse 18, list 3 passages from the New Testament where the word

hope is emphasized.

Romans 8:23; Ephesians 4:4; Colossians 1:5; Thessalonians 1:3; 1 Peter 3:15

14. What is Paul explaining in verse 20 and 21?

Having been raised from the dead, Christ is now the head of the church, the

ultimate authority over the world. Jesus is the Messiah, God‟s Anointed One, the One

Israel longed for, the One who would set their broken world right. As Christians we can

be confident that God has won the final victory and is in control of everything. We need

not fear any dictator or nation, or even Satan himself. The contract has been signed and

sealed; we are waiting just a short while for delivery. Paul says in Romans 8:37-39, that

nothing can separate us from God and His love.

15. In chapter 1 verse 23, what is meant by fullness?

Fullness refers to Christ filling the church with gifts and blessings. The church

should be the full expression of Christ, who himself fills everything (Ephesians 3:19).

16. What must we never forget according to chapter 2 verses 1 and 2?

Like them, we must never forget our past, the condition from which Jesus saved

us.

17. In verse 2 who is “the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at

work in those who are disobedient”? The devil is the “ruler of the kingdom of the air.” Paul‟s readers believed that

Satan and the evil spiritual forces inhabited the region between the earth and the sky.

Satan this is thus pictures as ruling an evil spiritual kingdom – the demons and those who

are against Christ. In the resurrection Christ was victorious over Satan and his power.

Therefore, Jesus Christ is the permanent ruler of the whole world and Satan is only the

temporary ruler of the part of the world that chooses to follow him.

18. Fill in the blank based on chapter 2, verse 3: Paul tells us about our old

__________________ (two words). sinful nature

* Correction from previous newsletter: See last line where “NO” is underlined.

19. Fill in the blanks based on verses 8 and 9: “For it is by _____________ that you

have been saved, through _______________ - and it is not from _______________, it

is the ____________ of God – not by ______________, so that NO one can boast.

grace; faith; yourselves; gift; works

20. What is Paul trying to emphasize in verses 8 and 9?

We become Christians through God‟s unmerited grace, not as the result of any

effort, ability, intelligent choice, or act of service on our part. However, out of gratitude

for this free gift, we will seek to help and serve others with kindness, love, and

gentleness, and not merely to please ourselves.

14

21. Fill in the blanks based on chapter 2 verses 11 to 13: Paul pointed out that

_______________ and _______________ were unclean before God needed to be

cleansed by _______________.

Gentiles; Jews; the blood of Jesus Christ

22. According to verses 14 to 16, who can break down the wall of prejudice and

reconcile all believers to God?

Jesus Christ

23. What are a few barriers that divide us from other Christians?

Do you know the meaning of Epiphany? “Epiphany: Christian Festival celebrating the Divinity of Jesus: A Christian festival

marking the visit of the Magi to celebrate Jesus Christ„s birth or in the Eastern Orthodox

Church, the baptism of Jesus Christ. A Sudden realization; a sudden intuitive leap of

understanding, especially through an ordinary but striking occurrence. It came to him an

Epiphany what life‟s work was to be: An appearance of God: The supposed manifestation

of a divine being.”

A Lovely Poem by Shri Rabindranath Tagore

Go not to the temple to put flowers upon the feet of God,

first fill your own house with the Fragrance of love...

22

Go not to the temple to light candles before the altar of God,

first remove the darkness of sin from your heart...

Go not to the temple to bow down your head in prayer,

first learn to bow in humility before your fellowmen...

Go not to the temple to pray on bended knees,

first bend down to lift someone who is down-trodden. ..

Go not to the temple to ask for forgiveness for your sins,

first forgive from your heart those who have sinned against you .
