I sincerely acknowledge the contributions many individuals
and various institutions/organizations in the preparation of my presentation
They are numerous to be mentioned
Presentation objectives Promote Active learning in the classroom Techniques to nurture student expectations Stimulate learning among difficult students Enhance Academic productivity Create joyful learning atmosphere in the classroom
To become a life long learner To transform from a teacher to a mentor To teach for learning and vice-versa To become a student of the school of learning to be, learning to do and learning to live together.
A true teacher knows………..
“A true teacher knows that he has achieved perfection
not when there is nothing left to learn but when
there are many things those yet to learn”
What is active learning exactly? Active learning is an term that refers to several models of instruction that focus the responsibility of learning on learners.
This indicates that to learn, students must do more than just listen: They must read, write, discuss, or be engaged in solving problems.
It relates to the three learning domains referred to as knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSA), and that this taxonomy of learning behaviors can be thought of as "the goals of the learning process.
In particular, students must engage in such higher-order thinking tasks as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
Active learning engages students in two aspects – doing things and thinking about the things they are doing.

Components of Active Learning To understand your learner Mutual Trust among the Mentor-Mentee-Learning Environment
Effective understanding about Learning barriers
Allow each learner to designing his/her own learning paradigm
Mapping learners’ IQ, EQ, Leadership Quotient Adequate Freedom to express Planning teaching-learning-instructional process as per need of the learners
Absence of fear and flow of natural belief Spontaneity in progress More learning experience and less evaluation
How every body is involved in an Active Learning Class(a case of Vanier College-
USA)
Let us watch Video-5
Our learners are adults not children……. Mind it……
Characteristics of Adult Learners• Are autonomous and self-directed.• Have a foundation of life experiences and knowledge.
• Are goal-oriented.• Reactionary and violent for change occurs through pressure
• Are relevancy-oriented.• Are practical.• Need to be shown respect.
For each characteristic, there are implications for us.
Adult learners are autonomous and self-directed.
Implications:• Involve participants.• Serve as facilitator.• Determine interests of learners Adult learners have a foundation of life experiences and knowledge

Adult learners are relevancy-oriented.
Implication: Explain how teaching objectives
relate to learning outcomes Adult learners are practical Implication: Show relevance of your teaching in
practical situation
Adult learners need to be respected.
Implications: Acknowledge the wealth of knowledge and
experiences the participants bring to the training.
Treat the participants as equals rather than subordinates.
Give them Emotional Strength
From Academic to personality grooming .…..
Understand their background and make a SWOC Give relevant counseling, when they are trouble Design Course content according to their need Changing landscape of learning- Be dynamic and innovative
Grooming Competencies (Outcomes) Making the connection (mapping) Always ask for suggestions Link to your teaching with desired outcomes Relate your learning to life experience
Instructional strategies for Grooming Adult learner
Quiz. Games. Role-playing. Brainstorming. Group problem-solving. Simulation. Case Study Lecture.
Student’s Expectations
Want solid knowledge base and real-world applications
Want clear and organized presentation of material
Want to be stimulated, active and participatory Want to know why (how does this activity, reading connect to my future career?)
Want faculty to be enthusiastic, helpful and engaged
Expect “customer service” Want face-to-face contact but accept boundaries
Understand their need…… We must understand learners’ learning need. Accept differences among students and between students and faculty
Engage students in setting goals and expectations
Be flexible, creative and try not to be surprised by anything that happens in the classroom!
Problem-based learning Student-centered instruction ( Adult learning/Adult education)
Competency-based (outcomes-based) instruction
Rationalize their learning style Least interference More Encouragement and Appreciation More observation to their creativity More communication Work as a counselor

Mental pressure due to wrong decision related to course, electives, partner,
Future goal Defense mechanism
How can we become trustworthy for them? Keeping Privacy Ensuring their trust and belief Not take any casual approach In-depth study of the case Take expert advice if possible Counsel for relaxation techniques Help them to involve in creative work Open-up for the wide opportunities awaiting for them
