(Above) Since 2008, Zonta International has partnered with the US Fund for UNICEF and focuses efforts on eliminating mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV in Rwanda. In 2015, Rwanda will see its first HIV-free generation.

Zonta International Foundation 1

We will continue supporting the projects in Rwanda and be one of the major actors in achieving the first HIV-free generation in this country, and as soon as possible we will continue the project in Liberia.

The 2012-2014 Biennium saw record donations to

the Foundation with more than US$5.1 million

donated from Zonta clubs, individual Zontians and

friends of Zonta from around the world. More than

3,400 new donors to the Foundation (clubs and

individuals), in addition to a six percent increase

in individual giving and a four percent increase

in club giving, helped the Foundation meet and

surpass its goals.

DEAR ZONTIANS, ZONTA CLUBS AND FRIENDS OF ZONTA,DEAR DONORS AND POTENTIAL DONORS,

On behalf of the Zonta International Foundation Board, I am pleased to share with you the Zonta International Foundation Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2014 (1 June 2013 to 31 May 2014). All our generous donations make a difference in the lives of women and girls around the world. We support efforts to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Rwanda, while focusing on preventing and ending gender-based violence through the use of One Stop Centers. And we help to bring Liberian women living with fistula to medical centers to receive the treatment they need before rehabilitating them and reintegrating them into their communities. We—together—have contributed more than US$4 million to these two projects since 2008 and will continue supporting both projects this biennium. Preventing and responding to violence against women and girls continues to be a primary focus for us Zontians. Through the ZISVAW Fund, we support efforts to end gen-der-based violence in communities across the globe. In Samoa, our support empowered rural women to realize their rights and raised awareness of violence against women in the local community, while in Honduras, our support for the Safe Cities initiative has given wom-en the skills and resources to take back public spaces and contribute to decision-making processes. At the same time, in Bangladesh and Nigeria, our support laid the groundwork for large-scale edutainment projects and provided training resources for smaller campaigns in 9 additional countries in Africa and Asia. We empower women so they themselves can empower others and be the main contributors to the needed sustainable change. We also continue supporting remarkable women in the fields of aerospace-related science and engineering, business and public affairs through our Amelia Earhart Fellow-ship, Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship and Young Women in Public Affairs Award. Our generous support helps the recipients further their educational and career goals and ensures that talented women are given the opportunities to succeed in these fields. The focus this biennium is prevention of root causes of gender inequality and violence against women through education. Our contributions will increase the level of non-discrim-inatory education, ensuring laws and policies and the adoption of a human-rights based approach through and in education that will enable equal access to education for girls and boys regardless of marital or parental status. We will continue supporting the projects in Rwanda and be one of the major actors in achieving the first HIV-free generation in this country, and as soon as possible we will continue the project in Liberia. Furthermore, we will contribute to delaying early marriage and to a life free of violence for women by supporting PREVENTIVE programs promoting gender-equal norms and violence-free en-vironments, and programs that help men to change behavior towards women to one of mutual respect.

We cannot change the past; that is our history. But together we can—AND WE MUST—build the future. Our donations help us to take the necessary steps to ensure changes in cultures and traditions that hinder women from developing their full potential. On behalf of all the women in the world we support, I extend a big thank you to every single donor, to every single true world changer!

Sincerely,

Maria Jose Landeira OestergaardPresident Zonta International Foundation

International Service ProjectsLIBERIA FISTULA PROGRAM

Since 2008, Zonta International has provided 1.95 million US Dollars to support efforts to eliminate obstetric fistula and reduce maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity in Liberia.

As a result:

• 1,079 women and girls in Liberia have received surgical treatment to repair a fistula

• 264 survivors have been rehabilitated and reintegrated into their communities following treatment

• Average age range of patients has improved from 11 to 20 years to 16 to 22 years, thanks to the implementation of better awareness and prevention strategies.

• More than 5,000 youth and adults promised to serve as fistula advocates following a nationwide fistula mobilization campaign.

• More than 10,000 women and girls benefited from enhanced reproductive health service delivery.

Despite these successes, more than 5,000 women and girls in Liberia are still awaiting fistula treatment. To address this backlog of cases, Zonta International has committed US$600,000 during the 2014-2016 Biennium to continue its support for the Liberia Fis-tula Program; however, in light of the ongoing Ebola crisis, all project activities within the Liberia Fistula Program have been suspended to allow health workers to respond to Ebola outbreak. Despite these challenges, Zonta International remains committed to supporting UNFPA’s efforts to prevent obstetric fistula, treat women and girls living with fistula and rehabilitate them into their communities. To that end, Zonta has granted a no-cost exten-sion to UNFPA to allow them to resume project activities once the Ebola epidemic is under control and attention can be redirected to women and girls living with fistula.

ELIMINATION OF NEW PEDIATRIC HIV INFECTION AND PREVENTION AND RESPONSE TO SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC AND GENDER BASED VIOLENCE IN RWANDA

Since 2008, Zonta International has provided 2.2 million US dollars through a partner-ship with UNICEF to support efforts to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and prevent and respond to gender-based violence in Rwanda. As a result of these efforts, Rwanda is on track to achieve its first HIV-free generation in 2015.

Other achievements include:

• More than 90 percent of facilities now provide rapid HIV testing through the finger prick method. As a result, more than 3 million people were counselled and tested for HIV in 2013.

• 397 women received antenatal care and were tested for and counseled on HIV at the Matyazo Health Center, constructed with a very generous contribution by District 20 in honor of Past International President Helvi Sipilä.

• 160 women delivered in the new Matyazo Health Center maternity wing.

• 38 HIV-positive mothers and their families received clinical follow-up for HIV-exposed in-fants, nutritional support, home based care and encouragement to adhere to treatment.

• 16 babies born to HIV-positive mothers tested negative for HIV at 18 months.

• 890 victims, including 518 children and 372 adults (338 females and 34 males), received treatment at the Kacyiru One Stop Center.

• 175 victims, including 87 children and 88 adults (79 females and 9 males), received treatment at Gihundwe One Stop Center.

Zonta International has committed an additional US$800,000 to UNICEF to support this project through the 2014-2016 Biennium with an increased focus on prevention among adolescents.

Zonta International Strategies to End Violence Against Women (ZISVAW)POP CULTURE WITH A PURPOSE: GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP ON EDUTAINMENT FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

Edutainment is a term used to describe a proven approach that combines mass commu-nication of a positive and locally-relevant message with community outreach to transform cultural norms and myths. During the 2012-2014 Biennium, Zonta International partnered with the UN Trust Fund and Oxfam Novib to support edutainment campaigns to transform the notion that violence against women is “normal” and/or inevitable. The project was implemented in 11 target countries.

Outcomes to date include:

• Three local partner organizations in Bangladesh were guided through the planning pro-cess for a pilot campaign on sexual harassment for school-aged youth; the campaign was piloted in 10 schools.

• 23 participants attended a planning and implementation strategy workshop to strategize and share new ideas for edutainment communication materials.

• 10 partner organizations in Nigeria received edutainment training.

• Two partner organizations in Pakistan implemented a series of activities, including a focus group discussion on early marriage and a two-day capacity building workshop to assess the causes of violence against women and to form an NGO alliance to develop an advocacy strategy to address the issue.

SAFE CITIES FOR WOMEN IN HONDURAS

From 2008 to 2012, Zonta International supported the Safe Cities for Women Project in El Salvador and Guatemala. In 2012, Zonta continued its support for the Safe Cities initiative but directed its funding to Honduras, a country where violence against women increased by more than 20 percent between 2010 and 2011.

With Zonta’s support:

• 230 women are directly participating in the project with 49 women’s rights defenders offering critical services to women survivors of violence, who also participate in self-help groups where they receive peer-to-peer support and access to professional psychoso-cial support.

• 116 women from 13 neighborhoods have contributed to the development of a Citizen Security Agenda for Women. The Agenda includes concrete proposals and demands on domestic and intra-family violence, sexual violence, citizen security for women’s rights defenders and recovery of safe public spaces for women’s use and enjoyment.

• 92 women are working on developing and maintaining urban orchards to boost self-suf-ficiency and violence prevention processes.

• 51 girls and boys (40 girls and 11 boys) have formed dance and theatre groups. The theatre groups use methodologies that focus on analyzing oppressive power structures and the way they affect women. One of the plays was presented in a community public space on International Women’s Day in 2014.

• 47 women participate on an inter-institutional board that offers them a platform to dis-cuss their concerns and proposals with local and national authorities.

EMPOWERING WOMEN IN RURAL SAMOA TO COMBAT VIOLENCE

With the support of Zonta International, the Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG) em-powered communities in rural Samoa to prevent and respond to violence against women through grassroots advocacy and support and livelihood training for women threatened by violence.

Project achievements include:

• More than 150,000 community legal information brochures and “Police in your Commu-nity” posters were distributed through 410 village representatives, raising awareness in the community of how to report incidents of violence.

• More than 1,000 women survivors and women at risk of violence attended 30 livelihood workshops aimed at developing their livelihoods skills and increasing their self-esteem and sense of self-worth; 997 of these women recorded an increase sense of self-worth and self-esteem due to new skills acquired from the program.

• SVSG empowered 385 village representatives with the skills, strategies and resources to prevent violence against women and girls in their respective villages. 378 new strategies have been implemented within 380 villages throughout Samoa.

• 265 students from college and secondary schools received support to prepare internal assessments of violence in their communities.

• All 117 domestic violence cases lodged by the SVSG were referred to the police. 83 cas-es progressed through the court with 37 guilty verdicts with sentences ranging from 12 months to 17 years. SVSG also prepared seven Protection Orders on behalf of women survivors of violence with the Court.

• In April 2013, the Samoan Parliament passed the Crimes Act 2013, incorporating many of the recommendations put forth by SVSG to the Samoan Law Reform Commission, including harsher penalties for sexual crimes against children. Another major achieve-ment of the project was the passage of the Family Safety Act, which provides greater protection from domestic violence and detailed procedures for handling cases.

Profession: Pharmacist, Scientific Marketing Consultant in the pharmaceutical industry

As a member of the Zonta International Board (2004-2006), I read through all the reports of the NGOs that Zonta supported and realized that our donations really reached the targeted projects and changed the lives of those in need. I like the idea that Zonta often supports innovative pilot projects which are later taken over by larger organizations. When you donate to the Zonta International Foundation, you can trust that your donations will reach those you want to support, and you can be proud that your donation contributes to innovative projects addressing real problems.

LOYAL DONOR Nana Koranteng• Member of the Zonta Club of Accra II, Ghana since 1997• District Service Coordinator 2010-2012• President, Zonta Club of Accra II 2008-2010

Made first gift to the Zonta International Foundation in 2008

Profession: Development Consultant; Technical Advisor to Ghanaian Government institutions and agencies on behalf of donor agencies pro-viding development assistance in Ghana.

As individuals, we may have a passion for supporting women and girls in disadvantaged positions; however, while our individual efforts might reach a few people at any given time, a collective pool of resources will help reach many women and their families on different continents. Zonta’s achievements in raising funds through the Foundation to sal-vage otherwise seemingly hopeless situations and restore joy to many women are well catalogued. I would like to encourage all Zontians to contribute to the Foundation in their own small ways.

Made first gift to Zonta International Foundation in 2014

Profession: Information and Communication Technologies Manager

This year I made a personal contribution to the Zonta Internation-al Foundation in addition to my contributions via the club due to the major blessings I received and my position as club president. Being club president provided me with further insight into the activities of the Foundation and the number of lives Zonta’s sponsored projects continue to touch. I urge all Zontians to continue supporting the Zonta International Foundation in order to bring positive change to the lives of many people whom we would not be able to reach personally.

RECURRING GIFT DONOR

Dr. Mary Frances Gardner• Member of the Zonta Club of New Orleans, LA, USA since 1988• President, Zonta Club of New Orleans 2007-2008• Member, International Nominating Committee 2002-2004• Governor 2000-2002• Lt Governor 1998 - 2000• Area Director 1996-1998

Made first donation to the Zonta International Foundation in 1998

Profession: Physician specializing in Obstetrics & Gynecology

I took advantage of the new recurring gift option immediately. It only took a few minutes to set it up at my bank. I told everyone in my district about the new recurring gift program and asked them to consider par-ticipating. I have been making recurring gifts since 2002. The recurring gift option allows me to give regularly and it saves me a lot of time. I heard a statement from another member from Texas that really struck with me: “My hands will do at home and my money will do outside of the home.”

The Mary E. Jenkins 1919 Society

The Mary E. Jenkins 1919 Society was created to honor individuals who provide for the Zonta International Foundation through a planned gift. Each planned gift helps to ensure the future of Zonta’s programs to empower women and perpetuates the ideals established when Zonta International was founded in 1919. We are grateful to the following individuals who have notified us that they have made provisions for the Foundation in their estate plans.
