OUR MISSION

REACH Prep provides access to transformative educational experiences that empower underserved, high-achieving students to graduate from top colleges and emerge as the next generation of leaders.

BECCA DAVIS, RP Cohort 7, at her graduation from Georgetown Law in May 2018.

DEAR FRIENDS, In 2019, REACH Prep kicks off its 25th year, a milestone anniversary that we will celebrate with overwhelming gratitude and excitement for what is ahead in the years to come. REACH Prep has been committed to guiding academically motivated black and Latino students on a 12-year educational journey from 4th grade through college since our founders admitted the first cohort of Scholars in 1994. During this time, 150 Alumni have graduated from top independent schools and colleges, 90% of whom attained their college degree in 4-6 years, far above the national average of 59%. REACH Prep’s lifelong impact on its Scholars can be found in the classrooms and communities where they excel as engaged students and active leaders, as well as in the words of our Alumni captured in this year’s annual report. Our students’ unwavering determination, hard work and strong character coupled with our unparalleled network of support and opportunities have created a powerful and ever-widening ripple effect that continues to transform lives. We are truly grateful for REACH Prep’s generous donors, partners and friends who have helped our students gain access to and thrive in top educational environments and ultimately develop into exceptional leaders. It is because of your shared commitment to and investment in our mission that our students can continue to achieve unmatched outcomes and inspire future generations. We hope you enjoy the following pages that highlight what was an exciting year for REACH Prep, and we offer our deepest thanks for your support of our extraordinary Scholars. With gratitude,

Since its founding in 1994, REACH Prep has directed its targeted efforts to help high-achieving black and Latino students prepare for success in, and graduate from, top-tier colleges and universities. Our model of rigorous preparation, individualized support and close academic monitoring helps students develop their academic, personal and early professional potential. A student’s REACH Prep journey, with all of its comprehensive components, is a proven way to combat the statistics of historically underrepresented students gaining access to and thriving in independent school and college. High expectations, leadership and giving back are key elements of what REACH Prep expects from its students through their 12-year experience.

Students begin their 12-year REACH Prep journey at the end of their 4th grade year with Prep Academy, a rigorous 15-month academic program. This intensive, interdisciplinary program is designed to prepare students for the academic environment they will encounter when admitted to an independent school. The Prep Academy curriculum mirrors a typical independent school curriculum and is focused on academic preparation and study skills.

REACH PREP MIDDLE SCHOOL & HIGH SCHOOL SUPPORT

Throughout middle and high school, REACH Prep focuses on providing ongoing guidance, support and opportunities to ensure Scholars’ success on their journey to college. REACH Prep attends to the academic and social-emotional development of each Scholar through year-round advising, workshops, school visits and access to a variety of enrichment opportunities. Programming is student-centered, and is designed to establish constructive relationships with all stakeholders in order to create a comprehensive support network in which Scholars can thrive.

REACH Prep strives to provide constructive and enriching summer experiences for its students. Through REACH Prep facilitated programs and summer opportunities offered by generous partners, our goal is to provide transformative, and otherwise unobtainable, experiences for personal growth, early career exploration and academic enrichment.

This summer, Luis O. from RP Cohort 18 and The Stanwich School ‘19, traveled to Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and Greece with the Student Diplomacy Corps (SDC). Luis, along with ten other students from throughout the U.S., spent one month overseas exploring anthropology and human geography in the Balkans, and left with a deeper level of global awareness. Luis worked with REACH Prep throughout the application process and, due to REACH Prep’s strong partnership with SDC and our generous donors, we were able to provide financial support to help Luis attend.

This summer, REACH Prep collaborated with the Mountain Workshop to provide a multi-day Outdoor Leadership Workshop for REACH Prep’s middle school students. This multi-day workshop included high and low ropes courses, and a hike around Mountain Lakes Park in North Salem, NY. It taught students to lean on one another and rely on teamwork to complete these challenges, and sparked discussion around courage, authenticity and leadership.

Kailah C., RP Cohort 20 and School of the Holy Child ‘21, and Celeste B., RP Cohort 20 and Greenwich Academy ‘22, attended Camp Woodstock YMCA in Woodstock Valley, CT. This partnership with Camp Woodstock is one of numerous partnerships REACH Prep has with overnight and specialty camps in New England. Camp Woodstock is committed to creating an inclusive atmosphere where campers can develop confidence, strengthen friendships and connect to the natural world. Through this strong partnership, REACH Prep secures camperships which lessen the financial burden on students and families.

“ REACH Prep has provided me with mentorship that has helped me build confidence to seize any opportunities that interest me or come my way. Starting with my experience in Prep Academy many years ago, I have learned to keep reaching for bigger and better opportunities and have faith in my ability to be successful.”

Kelly is now an Investment Banking Analyst at Morgan Stanley. While at Princeton, Kelly was a member of the women’s rowing team, she was a peer career advisor and a teaching assistant for numerous courses in Economics and Statistics. She has been accepted to the Harvard Business School’s 2+2 program and is looking forward to return to school for her MBA to build on her skillset and position herself as a strong future business leader.

“ I chose grad school to continue my academic growth and learn more about the intersection of business and advanced mathematics. It was very difficult, but the grit that REACH Prep instilled in me helped me focus and continue through this journey. REACH Prep has always encouraged me to continue learning and growing, and has nourished a passion for knowledge since my childhood.”

After graduating with his Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his Masters in Mathematical Finance from Boston University, Malcolm now works as a Decision Scientist at Marcus by Goldman Sachs. Malcolm first realized his interest in machine learning and data science in college and he has worked to foster and develop these interests ever since. In his current role at Goldman, Malcolm uses data to derive insights and inform marketing and risk decisions.

“ REACH Prep has helped me in my educational journey from the very beginning by providing me with an invaluable support system and the necessary resources. In addition to my parents, REACH has been the driving force behind my educational accomplishments, instilling in me the value of an education and allowing me to believe in the significant role that it has and continues to have in my success.”

Kevin graduated in May 2018 with his Bachelor’s in Architectural Studies and a minor in Music from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Kevin was selected by the City of Geneva, NY to address food security and access issues in the city’s most impoverished neighborhoods through the AmeriCorps VISTA program. With a family background in the supermarket business, interests in urban planning and community organizing, and a passion for helping others, Kevin naturally gravitated toward this opportunity to make a difference within his community.

“ REACH Prep is probably one of the best things that has ever happened to me, coming in second only to the amazing parents I was blessed with. Through them, I learned how to walk, talk, think, and act like a leader, and I owe my current lot in life largely to the foundation REACH Prep helped me to build.”

Becca graduated with honors from Georgetown Law in May 2018 and is awaiting the results of the July 2018 California State Bar Exam. She currently works in the Los Angeles office of one of the most prestigious law firms in the world, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP.

JUNIOR COUNCIL

Throughout the 2017-2018 fiscal year, as we approached the organization’s 25th Anniversary, REACH Prep focused its efforts on initiatives that will continue to support its critical mission, expand services and create a sustainable plan for the organization’s future.

ESTABLISHED IN 2017, the REACH Prep Junior Council enables a new generation of professionals and philanthropists to promote the mission of REACH Prep through fundraising, volunteering and networking. In its first year, the group formed a Steering Committee and named its first Co-Chairs. In addition to their involvement in REACH Prep’s annual fundraisers, the group spearheaded a college care package event in December as well as a “Summer Kickoff” event in June to network and introduce new friends to REACH Prep.

We look forward to many more exciting opportunities and initiatives with the Junior Council in the future!

REACH FORWARD: VISION FOR THE FUTURE

2017-2018 HIGHLIGHTS & INITIATIVES

GOAL: REACH PREP SCHOLARSIn 2022, REACH Prep Scholars and families have access to the knowledge, resources, and guidance necessary for Scholars to persist on their educational journeys and be prepared for a global society.

Ever dedicated to providing individualized support for our Scholars and their families, REACH Prep will expand leadership development opportunities, increase staffing dedicated to supporting Scholars, and build a larger network of robust internship opportunities.

WITH THE HELP OF STAKEHOLDERS, including parents, Board Members, Alumni, Scholars, donors, faculty, staff and school partners, REACH Prep engaged in a strategic planning experience over the last year that involved a comprehensive review of our 12-year program model and mission coupled with an articulation of shared hopes and expectations as the organization prepares to embark on its 25th year. This process included a first-ever Visioning Day open to the community in the fall of 2017, which allowed for guided reflections and dynamic discussions about the past, present and future of REACH Prep. The organization emerged from this planning process with a clear vision, an updated mission statement, a reaffirmation of our programming efforts, and key goals aimed at amplifying REACH Prep’s effectiveness, influence and outcomes over the next five years, and beyond.

GOAL: REACH PREP ALUMNIIn 2022, REACH Prep graduates are a part of a strong peer network of emerging leaders and actively engaged Alumni. Recognizing that the achievements of our Alumni reflects the success of our program, REACH Prep will enhance and expand networking opportunities, grow and cultivate a well-connected and engaged Alumni community, and increase resources devoted to Alumni engagement.

GOAL: REACH PREP PARTNERSIn 2022, REACH Prep’s educational, funding, and community partnerships are growing in effectiveness and numbers. By enhancing relationships with current partner independent schools, colleges, and other community organizations, as well as forging new affiliations with these types of institutions, REACH Prep will not only expand educational opportunities for its Scholars, but will also broaden its pool of potential funding resources.

GOAL: REACH PREP IDENTITY & IMPACTIn 2022, REACH Prep is known and valued for its societal impact and for transforming the lives of its Scholars. Through increased brand awareness, engagement with local and national organizations, identification of promising growth opportunities and the sharing of best practices, REACH Prep will effectively share its mission, successes and positive impact on a significantly larger scale.

REACH PREP IS THRILLED to announce that this year the organization received a generous gift of $2 million from a first-time donor to establish new programs and enhance current services to support our high school and college Scholars on their path to college admission, persistence and completion.

This unprecedented gift will help REACH Prep build on and

achieve the following goals over the next few years:

• To further improve REACH Prep Scholars’ ability to achieve college success measured by competitive college admission options that include strong and viable financial aid packages.

• To ensure the highest levels of college persistence and

completion in 4-6 years through new and increased support and programming from 9th grade through college.

• To transform our leadership development and early

professional opportunities for high school and college Scholars.

REACH Prep is profoundly grateful for this investment in

our mission and for the ability to deepen and strengthen our commitment to our Scholars.
