Intro to Realistic materials Intro to Realistic materials using Blender's cyclesusing Blender's cycles

3D UnitProf: Carlos Cámara

Goals

● Software independent concepts– Learn the basics of realistic materials

– Be familiar with node editor– Be familiar with render engine concepts

● Blender specific concepts– Create realistic materials using nodes with blender and cycles

What makes a good texture?

Texture images

Texture images + lights and shadows

Material = Map 1 + Map 2 + Map 3...

● Types of Maps:– Diffuse– Normal / Bump (usually BW)– Specularity (glossiness)– Occlusion (fake crevices)– Displacement (roughness)

● Two paradigms

– Maps = Layer of information

– Maps are a particular case of nodes

Where do we get textures?

● Buying complete materials● Textures' repositories:

– http://cgtextures.com/ – http://www.texturemate.com – http://blender-archi.tuxfamily.org/Textures

● Taking pictures + manipulating (GIMP, Photoshop...)● Extract textures from texture /images using specific

software– Crazybump– Insane– Knald https://www.knaldtech.com

Render engine

The node editor

Nodes

Types● Shaders: describe lighting interaction at the

surface or of the volume, rather than the color of the surface. – Diffuse– Translucent– Glossy– Glass– Transparent– ...

● Textures– Image– Environment– Brick– ...

● Output / Input● Transformations

Complete reference on node types:http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Render/Cycles/Nodes

● Handlers– Yellow: RGB input– Pink: Vector input– Grey: value input– Green: output?

Let's practice!

Setting up the scene

● Create a plane with checker material● Several spheres● Add Light from HDR Image (Scene's

environment texture)– Downloadable from

● http://www.hdrmill.com/Freebies.htm● http://hdrmaps.com/freebies● …

Preparing the geometry

● UV Map the spheres and plane– Wrapping a flat image around 3d geometry

Applying materials

● Apply a brick material to a sphere● Apply a glass material to a sphere
