NO ENGINEER, REGARDLESS of his field, has re-ceived a complete education without knowledge of cer-tain subjects basic to the engineering profession. Thestudies Engineering Drawing and Mechanics are twocourses that supply training necessary to all phases ofwork concerned with technology. This department hasthese standards of technical proficiency to instill withinthe students of Georgia Tech.

Engineering Drawing, fortified with a course in de-scriptive geometry, is designed to give a basic ability indrafting and understanding drawings and representingthem graphically: Mechanics deals with force and itseffect in producing and changing motion, and in alter-ing shapes of bodies. This is the foundation for all de-sign and construction.

A FRESHMAN diligently works on his drawing plates.

PROFESSOR ADAMS discusses literature with his afternoon English class.

Department of EnglishTHE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT is one of the largestand oldest departments on the campus. Its goal is toteach certain required courses to all freshmen and soph-omores and to a large percentage of the juniors, as wellas offering elective courses to a great number of upper-classmen.

Every engineer must be able to express his ideasclearly and concisely to succeed in his work. In addition,a knowledge of the classic literature of all times is nec-essary for a well-rounded man. The English Depart-ment strives to teach these essentials to all students atTech.

The English Department is especially interested incampus organizations and supplies faculty advisors tocertain student publications.

ARTHUR M. COLEMAN

STRENGTH OF ONE'S MIND and body are closelyrelated. The Department of Physical Training presentsa good two year course designed to keep the studentbodily fit while at Tech and in addition give him someinstruction and motivation in "carry over" sports andactivities that he may enjoy after graduation.

The freshman course of instruction is divided intoswimming, gymnastics, and track. The swimming courseis nationally known as a "survival" course. The gymdevelops skill and bodily coordination. The track coursedevelops lungs, heart, and generally conditions themuscles.

The sophomores take indoor, outdoor, and recreativesports. These are designed to serve primarily as "main-tenance" courses.

Department ofSocial Science

THE SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT strives togive a broad background of general training in non-technical fields. These courses tend to broaden the stu-dent's view of the complex problems of society. Thethree main parts of the course are Western Civilization,Industrial Sociology, and Anthropology. The main pur-pose of the department is to teach students to under-stand human relations, thus making it an integral partof the program of general education. Many electivecourses in history and economics are also offered by thedepartment. Some of the courses in history are offeredto history requirement for graduation in a Georgia col-lege. Still others fulfill the constitution requirementfor graduation. All courses are designed to broaden thestudent's education and prepare him for the future.

Department ofModern Languages

THE DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGESwas organized to give the student sufficient mastery ofa foreign language to read and understand the scientificand technical literature, and to inform the student ofthe civilization and literature of the countries who usethat language. They feel that the well-informed engi-neer must have a broad background of general trainingin fields not especially technical. They also feel that thestudent will benefit from the foreign languages by beingable to understand either conversation or writing inthese languages. Some schools have language require-ments in their curriculum so that the students in thatschool will be familiar with foreign literature writtenabout their profession.

Department of Psychology

Department of PublicHealth and Biology

THE PURPOSE OF THE Department of Psychologyis to emphasize the human factor in all phases of engi-neering and industrial management. To guide the pupilin his dealings with the human element and to intro-duce some of the various moods of human nature arethe main objectives of this department. An attempt hasbeen made to make the student sensitive to the wholeman, his attitude, his feelings, his fears, and his desirefor recognition and security. Through these courses thehuman element takes its rightful place among the fac-tors which make up fine engineers and managers. Futureplans are being made to introduce a new school oncampus called Industrial Psychology. In this modernage there is a great demand for engineers with a psy-chology background.

ENGINEERS ENTERING INDUSTRY today need aknowledge of the problems of health and sanitation, and the modern techniques used by the industries intheir solution of these problems. To provide this knowl-edge courses are available in biology, anatomy, andphysiology as well as sanitation and industrial hygiene. The department of Public Health offers courses on thesophomore, junior, and senior level. Although some oftheir courses are electives, many are required courses formany of the schools.many of the schools. Public Health courses are a veryimportant phase of Sanitary Engineering. The electivecourses within the department of Public Health andBiology are designed to give the engineering studenta more rorunded education.

School of Aeronautical Engineering

DONNELL W. DUTTON

IN TODAY'S MODERN AGE the emphasis on super-sonic flight and the possibility of man's flight into spacehave contributed to the prominence of the aeronauticalengineer.

This school was established in 1930 through a giftfrom the Daniel Guggenheim Fund. There are in addi-tion to the undergraduate curriculum, facilities for ad-vanced work on the master's degree. The advanced workwill prepare the student for research, high level design,or teaching aeronautics.

The physical plant, housed in two buildings, is wellequipped for offering laboratory work to augment andlend interest to the theoretical courses. Features of theplant are the 9 foot and 2 1/2 foot tunnels and the su-personic wind tunnel.

THE SATELLITE AGE has increased the demand forceramic engineers tremendously. The ceramic engineerhas produced such non-metallic materials as glass, brick, tile, and more recently, nose cone for ballistics misslesfrom one of the earth's most common substances.

Broad basic training is given in the fundamental andengineering course, thus preparing the student to entersuccessfully any division of the ceramic engineeringfield. The classroom, laboratory and library work arecoordinated to combine theoretical and practical knowl-edge.

The course of instruction covers four years and leadsto a degree of Bachelor of Ceramic Engineering. Grad-uate work leading to a degree of Master of Science inCeramic Engineering is also offered.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING involves the develop-ment and operation of industrially useful chemical proc-esses or the conversion of some discovery of chemistryinto a practical industrial operation. In today's accel-erated industrial and manufacturing age the chemicalengineer is in a prominent position.

A bachelor's degree is offered for completion of thefour-year undergraduate program. The School of Chem-ical Engineering offers master's work, also, and wasTech's first doctorate offering department.

By limiting registration in the Junior and Seniorclasses and providing a fine curriculum, the School ofChemical Engineering has made immense progress andhas provided key men for this highly technical industry.

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING is a highly necessaryfield in this day of high speed production and technicaladvances.

The industrial engineering facilities include wellequipped labs and lecture rooms. Visiting lecturers andplant trips are also an essential part of the curriculum. The industrial engineering student upon completion ofthe course is awarded the degree of Bachelor of Indus-trial Engineering and is well prepared to assume hisplace in industry.

Since industrial engineering connotes leadership inmost industries, much emphasis is placed on sound judg-ment and scientific knowledge instead of special tech-niques and handbook formulas as is the practice insome other departments.

FORMER GRADUATES run through a problem in industrial management.

THE SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL MANAGEMENTtrains students for positions of a management or super-visory nature in industry.

The curriculum includes economics, organization andmanagement of production, marketing management, personnel management and labor relations. Underlyingthese areas of study is a background in basic sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Since the requirementsfor executive positions in industry have become muchhigher in recent years, a more comprehensive, liberal-ized course of study is necessary for industrial managers.

Satisfactory completion of the four year curriculumleads to the degree of Bachelor of Science in IndustrialManagement.

School of Mathematics

MARVIN B. SLEDD

THE SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS embodies one ofman's oldest sciences, yet its importance continues togrow rapidly. Instruction is provided in important math-ematical disciplines to students in all branches of en-gineering.

The number of advanced courses in mathematicsnow outnumbers the undergraduate courses three toone, in spite of the fact that every freshman and sophomore takes courses in the Math department.

The use of the Rich Electronic Computer Center haspaved the way for a deeper look into one of man's mostfascinating sciences. Seminars and colloquiums on ap-plied mathematics complete the programs which leadto a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Ap-plied Mathematics.

THE SCHOOL OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERINGhas the honor of granting Tech's oldest degree, whichhas been awarded every year since 1888.

The fundamental aim of the course is to acquaintthe student with the basic rudiments of the generation, transmission, and utilization of heat and mechanicalenergy, as well as the production of tools and machines, and their products.

There are no optional courses in Mechanical Engi-neering, but electives are provided whereby a studentmay have some choice of subjects most suited to hisindividual desires. The curriculum is designed to pro-vide the basis for future advancement of MechanicalEngineering graduates as professional engineers and ascitizens.

School of PhysicsFOR THE PRECEDING DECADES physicists havelead in the scientific exploits of the world. Their in-fluence is felt in every department on the Georgia Techcampus. Today, the physicist is departing from the lab-oratory and working hand in hand with the engineer tofind practical applications for their work. Both the tech-nical and practical progress in the field of physics isgoing forward faster than ever before.

Since physics is a necessity for the engineer, all soph-omores at Georgia Tech are offered basic courses in thisfield. The completion of four years in the field of phys-ics leads to a degree of Bachelor of Science in Physicswith advanced courses of study offered. The curriculumis designed for the student to select either a practicalor scientific phase.
