Edward River (Kolety)
Deniliquin straddles the Edward River (Kolety), where towering red gums meet expansive outback plains. Our sunny climate has drawn visitors here to enjoy the outdoors for generations, with plenty of fun on the water by day followed by some of the biggest starry skies you’ll ever see by night.
Deniliquin’s human history dates back tens of thousands of years. The region has remained home to the Wamba Wamba and Perrepa Perrepa people since these early times. When European settlers arrived in the 1840s, the town grew quickly, fuelled by its riverside location, wool, rice and other crops. This was a time of great change and we acknowledge that these changes had a big impact on the lives of local traditional owners.
Today, you’ll find Deni offers the perfect combination of natural wonders with swimming spots and national parks on the doorstep, as well as gorgeous gardens and a wide selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants to explore in the heart of town.
From long walks through native bushland to long afternoons in a beer garden, from a gentle float along the river to a friendly round of golf, Deni is here to be enjoyed at your own pace.
We love to welcome visitors, so if there’s anything we can do to make your stay complete, just ask.
Welcome to Deni – we reckon you’ll feel at home in no time.

Lagoons to River WalkExplore Deniliquin’s unique lagoon system on this picturesque 1.4 km Lagoons to River Walk, which curves through the centre of town. You’ll pass through gorgeous parks including Waring Gardens, Brown’s Park and Scott’s Park. The trails have signage along the way to keep you on track, show distances and highlight key attractions.

Mountain bike trailsMurray Valley Regional Park is well known by mountain bikers for its fast and flowing cross-country routes through stunning forests. Expect lots of turns and log rollovers – it’s mostly flat terrain with some gentle hills and one steep descent.
Choose from three loop trails: 7.6km, 11km or 12km. The trail network is structured around the existing kangaroo tracks found in the forest, so it has a minimal environmental impact.
These trails are rated as intermediate but are suitable for most riders. It takes about two hours to complete the full 12km loop.
If you didn’t bring your own wheels, drop by the Visitor Information Centre in George Street to hire a mountain bike. It’s free to hire – just call ahead on 1800 650 712 to make sure bikes are available.
Ride! With our flat plains, Deniliquin and its surrounds are ideal for exploring by pedal power. From the wide streets in town to the backroads and smaller villages, you can leave the car behind and explore at a leisurely pace.
Bike trails can be found throughout the Murray Valley Regional Park. Both the Beach to Beach Walk and Lagoon to River Walk are bike-friendly.
Pick up a trail map from the Visitor Information Centre, where you can also borrow a bike for free. Bike hire is also available from some riverside resorts.

Swim!Young and old are welcome at our splash park, the Deniliquin Swim Centre, which features a 50-metre Olympic size outdoor pool as well as smaller hydrotherapy and kids’ pools.
The indoor warm hydrotherapy pool operates all year round and the outdoor pools are open from November to March.
Kids can dry off with a run around the playground equipment of neighbouring Scott’s Park.
Bowl! For some sport and a gentler pace with a social setting, you’re welcome at the Deniliquin Bowling Club. The green fee includes the use of bowls.
Golf! With 18 carefully maintained fairways meandering around waterways and forests, Deniliquin Golf Club is a mecca for avid golfers as well as native birds and wildlife. The greens are fast but true and kept in superb condition throughout the year.
As you walk the lush couch fairways, surrounded by abundant native flora, you may be joined by spectators ranging from kangaroos to wild ducks. Or you may share the fairways with the beautiful superb parrots. They, like other birds and native animals, seem oblivious to human activity.
The course itself is a par 72, comprising five par threes, five par fives and eight par fours. The front nine is shorter, though the many water hazards require precision placement. The more open back nine allows you to open up with the driver – but beware the creeks and trees if you’re too far offline.
The course is not long by today’s standards – 5,848 metres for men and 5,118 metres for ladies – but it will challenge the accuracy of all players with giant trees lining the fairways.
The club offers a ‘same day play’ which is rare among Murray courses. Call (03) 5881 3333 to organise your hit-off or visit denigolfclub.com.au

Local lagoonsAs well as the beautiful Edward River (Kolety), Deniliquin boasts a magnificent natural lagoon system that meanders through the centre of town. These lagoons are home to an array of birdlife, native wildlife and aquatic species.
Deniliquin’s lagoon system runs across six blocks, each including their own unique park and facilities.
Waring GardensWaring Gardens on Cressy Street is a delightful picnic area where you can feed the ducks, let the kids run around in the enclosed children’s playground or just sit back under the shade of a giant Moreton Bay fig. The park has public toilets, plenty of seating and a BBQ area. It is directly opposite one of Deni’s best shopping strips.
Burchfield ParkCommencing in Junction street, Burchfield Park is the natural place to start the Lagoons to River Walk.
McFaull ParkMcFaull Park in Civic Place has been developed into an open-air classroom to help people learn about the value of wetlands, with interpretive signs so you can enjoy a self-navigable wetland walk. Look out for native fish, including the endangered Southern Pigmy Perch, in the lagoons as well as a colourful array of birdlife including ducks, speckled geese, shags and pied cormorants. You might even spot a rare species such as the Australian reed warbler.
The refuge in the centre of the lagoon is where birds sit, rest and dry their wings. Every day they can be seen from the bird hide on the island. You’ll probably also see some water rats which love eating yabbies and small fish, and turtles which use the refuge for sunning and resting.
Gorman ParkGorman Park is between the Central Murray Regional Library and the Deniliquin Childcare Centre. It’s another popular place to stop and feed the ducks.

Brown ParkBrown Park is located in Whitelock Street, and is home to the Werrpanakata Fish Park (Wamba Wamba meaning a good place to fish). With its recreational fishing park and education facility, you can learn about the types of fish in our waterways and Indigenous areas of importance. A fishing deck has been built over the lagoon which is stocked with native fish and surrounded by native plants.
Scott’s ParkContinue along Whitelock Street to find Scott’s Park. While the lagoon system is underground in this park, there is still plenty to see and do. The park features a huge water tower mural, an adventure playground for the kids, the town’s indoor and outdoor pools, and the Community Garden.
Bird watchingIt’s possible to observe over 80 bird species in just one day within the town.
To ensure you experience it all, a local bird guide can be arranged at the Visitor Information Centre. Philip and Patricia Maher of Australian Ornithological Services specialise in helping serious bird watchers locate the harder to find and rarer species.
Popular locations for bird watching are in the Murray Valley Regional Park, McFaull Park, Island Sanctuary, or along the Edward River (Kolety). Maybe you’ll see The Plains Wanderer – an endangered species with habitats in and around Deni.
Did you know more than a third of Australia’s bird species have been spotted in the Deniliquin region?

Reed Beds Bird HideTwitchers never get tired of visiting the Reed Beds Bird Hide at Mathoura in the Murray Valley National Park, as there are different birds to see throughout the year.
Bring your camera for a stunning photo of an eastern great egret or a musk duck thrashing in the water to attract a mate. If you take a walk along the boardwalk, you could catch some yellow rosellas and superb wrens. Watch at the edge of the water for the purple swamphen.
Make sure you turn over the bird panels as you stroll along the boardwalk – you’ll learn some fascinating facts such as which birds are vegetarians and which prefer frogs, and which bird honks like a goose but soars like an eagle.
Hay PlainsFlat lands, big skies, and views that go on forever.
Head out on the open road north of Deniliquin, and you’ll find yourself cruising through the Hay Plains and into the traditional lands of the Nari Nari people. This vast expanse of flat land and saltbush is counted in the top three flattest places on earth – but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see.
If you’re lucky enough to be in this part of the world as a storm rolls in, you’re in for a show of truly epic proportions. Sunrise and sunset are also spectacular times to visit. It’s well worth an evening drive after a quick bite in one of the region’s welcoming pubs.
On a clear night (which is often around here) the vivid sunset colours give way to a glittering star-filled sky. With no city lights, the view is simply breathtaking.

Long Paddock Touring RouteThe Long Paddock touring route trip follows the historic Cobb stock route, from fascinating Echuca Moama on the Murray River to iconic country towns. The drive features public artworks and information boards along the way, bringing the history of this unique drive to life.
Today the modern Cobb Highway follows part of the great network of stock routes that became known as The Long Paddock – a network of tracks and trails linking stock-breeding areas of inland NSW and Queensland with emerging markets in Victoria. It also provided an escape route from drought when the seasons failed. The Long Paddock is still a working stock route which provides a link to times and landscapes long since altered.
The Long Paddock also passes through some of the most character-filled villages in Australia. These little townships of between 30 and 70 people provide visitors with a glimpse of life in country communities. Make sure you stop and have a cuppa or a beer in Pretty Pine, Wanganella and Booroorban, where you will be welcomed with a smile and can get a real feel for life in the bush.
The Long Paddock is an easy drive and accessible by caravan, car or 4WD.

Reutilise, by award-winning local artist Stuart Taylor, is a life-size Holden ute made from metal objects found on farms in the area around Deniliquin. It’s a homage to utes everywhere, and a celebration of the ingenuity of farmers and regional people across Australia.

Engineering marvelsAround Deni, you’ll find a couple of awe-inspiring feats of rural engineering.
The Lawson Syphon, approximately five kilometres from town, diverts the canal under the river to deliver water to the agricultural areas west of Deniliquin. There are interpretive panels on-site, telling the story of the syphons and how they were the catalyst for a farming boom.
Around 25 kilometres north west of Deni is Stevens Weir, which was built in 1938 to guarantee permanent town water supplies. There is a lovely picnic area overlooking the weir and the fish ladder, which allows native fish to migrate upstream to spawn.

Out of town
Visit the villages of Blighty, Booroorban, Conargo, Mayrung, Pretty Pine and Wanganella for a taste of country life and a glimpse into our storied past.
visitdeni.com.au40
BlightyThe village of Blighty is an easy half-hour drive east towards Finley and Albury. What Blighty lacks in size (the population is somewhere around 400) it more than makes up in community spirit. You won’t find any shops, but it does have a primary school, a pub, a footy ground and netball courts. This is a town rich in family, community and friendliness.
For a taste of local life, stop in for a drink or a hearty meal at the Blighty Hotel – the chicken parma is a specialty. On weekends there’s often a barbecue going in the beer garden, and you might even get roped into a friendly pool competition.
Country football and netball clubs are the glue for many small Aussie towns. On winter Saturdays, join the locals around the oval cheering on the mighty Redeyes. Every second Saturday features a home game at Blighty.
BooroorbanOnce a stop on the fabled Cobb & Co run between Deniliquin and Hay, the Royal Mail Hotel is at the centre of life in the village of Booroorban. In fact, it’s the only commercial building in the village!
Located in the middle of the vast, flat Hay Plains, Booroorban features a small camping ground and caravan park at the pub. Here you can enjoy a meal, a drink and a chat with the locals in the lovely peppercorn tree-shaded beer garden.
The main bar pays homage to the Headless Horseman, also commemorated in a sculpture out at the Black Swamp rest area, who was said to roam these parts in the 1850s. Don’t let an old headless bloke put you off though – as well as the camping ground, the area features the Burraburoon Farm Stay experience, a working sheep station offering unique accommodation in a converted train carriage.

ConargoConargo was initially part of Benjamin Boyd’s vast pastoral empire, extending from the south, across the Billabong Creek, and taking in more land to the north. Officially gazetted as a town in 1860, Conargo quickly grew to become the passionate pastoral and grazing community it is today.
Only a 25-minute drive northeast of Deniliquin, Conargo village sits on the Billabong Creek (a tributary of the Murrumbidgee) which many claim is the longest creek in Australia.
While the village is small, it services several large sheep stations and merino studs. The merino breed has its origins in the Riverina, and the Interpretive Centre in Conargo tells the story of this critical animal’s influence on the fortunes of not just the region, but the entire nation.
The restored 19th century Drop Log Stables, showing the building process of the time, were part of the old Cadman’s Conargo Inn that served as a meal break for travellers on the old Cobb & Co coach run. The photo opportunities continue just a little further along the road, where a charming bush church from 1914 still stands.

MayrungWith a population hovering somewhere around 150, Mayrung is a tiny village community but a big part of our region’s agricultural life. Irrigation makes grain production possible, and the locals have taken to rice and other grains here with gusto. The landscape changes through the seasons and makes for a lovely scenic drive just 30km from Deni.
Pretty PineJust a short 20-minute drive from Deni is the small community of Pretty Pine.
Here you can visit the Pretty Pine Hotel, a heritage building that was once the final stop on the Cobb & Co route to Deniliquin from Hay. These days, it’s better known for its delicious meals (pizza a specialty), cold drinks and friendly service.
While you’re in town, kids can run free at the football oval, cricket pitch and playground of Pretty Pine Recreation Reserve.
If you happen to be in the area in September, don’t miss the famous annual Pretty Pine Father’s Day Expo and Market on the first Sunday of the month. This vibrant community event attracts several thousand visitors every year.

Wanganella General Store
WanganellaSitting on a picturesque bank of the Billabong Creek, the Wanganella General Store draws visitors from all around for friendly service, cold drinks and classic pub meals.
Wanganella is probably best known as the birthplace of the Peppin merino sheep breed; a hardy, large sheep that was built for Australia’s climate and conditions. The Peppin Merino is now the most common breed in Australia, and a bronze statue at the front gates of Wanganella Station, just south of the village, commemorates its importance.
The village is around 45 minutes’ drive north of Deniliquin along the flat Hay Plains, and makes a special side-trip to see the countryside. Settle in at the General Store and take in the breathtaking sunsets or big starry night sky on the way back.
If you’re feeling adventurous, explore the region’s tracks and waterways – either on foot or by bike – and maybe even find a secluded spot to cast a line and catch a fish or two. Heading north from Deni, take a left at the first dirt road after the Billabong Creek bridge (no sign, no name!) for some beautiful natural picnic spots. As well as fish, this spot is home to several notable bird species.
Local tip!A true locals’ secret, the area best known as The Common in Wanganella is a hidden away, nature lovers’ haven. Take the first dirt road to the left once crossing the Billabong Creek bridge towards Hay and you’ll wind your way along the creek’s edge through a forest of river gums. You’ll find ample areas to pull up for a peaceful picnic, to cast a line for a yellow or Murray Cod, a bushwalk with your fur family or even a bike ride.Emma Crameri, Pretty Pine
