February is Black History Month: Delta Sigma Theta is Black History!
2020 Theme- African Americans and the VoteThe year 2020 marks the centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment and the culminationof the women’s suffrage movement. The year 2020 also marks the sesquicentennial ofthe Fifteenth Amendment (1870) and the right of black men to the ballot after the CivilWar. The theme speaks, therefore, to the ongoing struggle on the part of both black
men and black women for the right to vote (ASALH, 2020).
The important contribution of black suffragists occurred not only within the largerwomen’s movement, but within the larger black voting rights movement. Through voting-
rights campaigns and legal suits from the turn of the twentieth century to the mid-1960s, African Americans made their voices heard as to the importance of the vote.
Indeed the fight for black voting rights continues in the courts today. The theme of thevote should also include the rise of black elected and appointed officials at the local and
national levels, campaigns for equal rights legislation, as well as the role of blacks intraditional and alternative political parties (ASALH, 2020)

Don’t stretch the truth about your finances. Always be honest and factual regardinginformation on your loan application. Falsifying financial information is a definite NO-NO!When you cosign for a loan you are obligating yourself financially. Home lendersdisapprove of any applicant that decides to co-sign.Don’t buy emotionally! No matter how you much you “LOVE” the home, don’t spend morethan the value of the home or property. Don’t overextend yourself. Don’t allow creditors do inquiries into your credit. The mortgage company sees thatinquiries are being made; they may assume you are trying to take out more debt – even ifyou aren’t.Avoid making large deposits into your bank account or making cash deposits. Avoid buying a car or furniture/household goods on credit while purchasing a home.

The Chapter History of the MLK Walk/ Hot Chocolate
The Dayton Alumnae Chapter started marching in the MLK walk in the early 80’s, when Rev.Raleigh Trammell was the coordinator of the march, we first left from Westtown Shopping Center, one year Welcome Stadium, and now Drew Health Center, all ending at the Dayton ConventionCenter, Downtown. I am not sure what year the chapter started making & passing out the HotChocolate to the marchers. The first Hot Chocolate was made at Wayman AME Church, Mr. James Myerts, our church vandriver, would help us load the van, and take it to the place where we passed it out, we made it atWayman Church for several years. Other place where we made the Hot Chocolate were: Dixon United Methodist Church, Mt Enon Baptist Church, NAACP Headquarters,Millie Dixon’s Apartment, Sweet Dots Bakery/ Café, Weekend Ribs and our presentlocation Ziks Pharmacy. At first we just had plain Hot Chocolate, Alex Freeman gave a special recipe to JoHelen Williams, she added to it. Later Elaine Springer added to it and today we serve our special “DAC HotChocolate”. We thank Wayman Church member, Kathy Henderson, who volunteered with us formany years and offering the suggestion to use muffin tins to pass out the Hot Chocolate. All thesorors who started out marching and making the Hot Chocolate are now Delta Dears and someare even in the Omega Omega Chapter. We have been doing this for over 40 years! In the pastseveral years Wilberforce & Montgomery County Chapters have joined us. Submitted by the youngest of those Dears, Peggy A. Wynn
