SMC surgeons remove brain tumour using Neuronavigation-Assisted EndoscopyTDT | Manama

Neurosurgeons at Salmani-ya Medical Complex

(SMC) successfully operated a 23-year-old male patient, who was diagnosed with a rare, deep-seated benign flu-id-filled tumour called a col-loid cyst.

The patient underwent an urgent life-saving ‘keyhole’ craniotomy, using neuronav-igation-assisted endosco-py through a small incision measuring no more than 1 cm, a state-of-the-art surgery that is considered the first of its kind in the Kingdom of Bah-

rain. The patient had a severe

sudden onset of headache. Brain imaging revealed the diagnosis of colloid cyst − a bag of cells that secrete fluid and take up space disrupting the internal fluid circulation and dynamics of the brain.

Thanks to collective efforts, the patient was discharged within a few days, and post-operative follow-up revealed complete excision of the cyst with no associated compli-cations.

Dr Nabeel Hameed, Head of the Neurosurgical Depart-ment at SMC, stated that the

endoscopic surgical approach to colloid cyst resection has made the surgery much less invasive than a traditional craniotomy, with reduced surgical and recovery times.

The medical team ex-pressed their sincere grati-tude and appreciation for the continuous support of the country’s leadership under His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister for their support and directives to continuously develop the healthcare sector. The patient underwent an urgent life-saving ‘keyhole’ craniotomy

Innovation at its best: Bahraini girl students take top prize in MENA Healthcare and Tourism hackathon

TDT | Manama

Students of Saar Secondary School for Girls came out

with flying colours in the Middle East and North Africa Hacka-thon Innovation Competition in health care and tourism.

Maryam Muhammad Al-Sayed Maatouq, a member of the winning team, said they de-signed a smart application called Al-Mouhtar for the competition.

The app provides patients with medical analyses, treat-ment history from hospitals and clinics and other related data in a single file.

“So, if a patient had to visit a hospital or clinic while travel-ling or after an accident, all of his medical histories are readily available at a click,” said Maryam adding, “He does not have to repeat the analyzes.”

Students developed the app

under the guidance of Khadija Abbas Al-Asboul, a teacher of the school.

“We managed to take the top spot, thanks to the Ministry of Education and our school for encouraging creativity and in-

novation, and instilling prob-lem-solving skills in students.”

In the tourism sector, the school developed an applica-tion dubbed “Above clouds are present” with Professor Mona Yaqoub Youssef, a school educa-

tion technology specialist. The app helps travellers with

language translation, currency exchange service, baggage track-ing, and reservations amongst other services.

A team of students Malak

70 days of maternity leave Parliamentarians approve proposal, Paternal leave increase to 3 days from one TDT | Manama

Parliamentarians yester-day approved a proposal ratcheting up the length

of maternity leave of govern-ment employees by ten more days to 70.

Earlier, woman employees in government jobs had only 60 days to take care of her baby, before returning to work.

The new rule also gives a fa-ther a three-day leave to help the mother and baby. Earlier, he had only a single day for that.

Deputy Fatima Al-Qatari said the cost for implementing the proposal does not exceed 500 thousand dinars, which, she said, “is very small compared to the benefits reaped.”

The cost is also minor com-pared to the total manpow-er-related expenditures, which is more than one billion dinars,

according to the financial state-ments for the year 2019, she added.

Al-Qatari said the extra days

would have a tremendous im-pact on a woman’s psyche and health. “It allows her some more time to overcome the effects of postpartum.”

“The move would enhance her productivity, and helps rec-oncile the requirements of her family and society.”

Regarding the proposal to ex-tend parental leave, Qatari said many men are now deducting days from their annual leave to assist mother and baby during the first days of birth.

The proposal, Al Qatari said, takes cue from the experiences of some neighbouring coun-tries. “The United Arab Emir-ates grants working women 90 days as maternity leave,” Fatima Al-Qatari said.

Sanders, with mittens pic, raises $1.8 mn for charityAFP | Washington

The Inauguration Day pho-tograph of a mitten-clad,

glamor-defying Bernie Sanders perhaps was not the most flat-tering image of the US senator, but it has become a remarkably charitable one.

The 79-year-old lawmaker from the northeastern state of Vermont announced Wednesday he has raised $1.8 million for charity over the past five days through sales of merchandise featuring him wearing knit mit-tens and a parka at President Joe Biden’s January 20 swearing-in.

The image launched a thou-sand memes and made the ear-nest and seemingly cantanker-ous two-time presidential can-didate even more of an internet star than he already was.

“Jane and I were amazed by all the creativity shown by so many people over the last week,

and we’re glad we can use my internet fame to help Vermont-ers in need,” Sanders said in a statement.

“But even this amount of mon-ey is no substitute for action by Congress,” he said, referring to efforts to pass a massive corona-

virus pandemic rescue package.“I will be doing everything I

can in Washington to make sure working people in Vermont and across the country get the relief they need in the middle of the worst crisis we’ve faced since the Great Depression.”

Sanders’s office said the groups receiving charitable funds include the Vermont op-erations of Meals on Wheels and the Vermont Parent Child Network.

The initial run of the “Chair-man Sanders” merchandise sold out 30 minutes after the items -- including sweatshirts and T-shirts -- were made available online yesterday. There is now a weeks-long backlog of orders.

The image of a cross-legged Sanders wearing a light blue mask and seated alone at the inauguration was captured by AFP photographer Brendan Smi-alowski.

According to Sanders’ office, as part of the licensing agree-ment to put the image on ap-parel and stickers, Getty Imag-es, the agency that distributes AFP images in the United States, will donate its proceeds from the license to Meals on Wheels America.

Smialowski has been im-pressed by the various iterations of his frame online.

“The internet is like a wild an-imal, tough to predict and hard to tame,” he said.

“While I never expect or strive for my work to go viral or get memed, it doesn’t surprise me in the sense that the internet and social media are unpredicta-ble. Anything is possible.”

Russian court upholds Navalny’s detentionThe latest ruling comes as Navalny’s supporters plan further protests this weekend, against the backdrop of simmering anti-Kremlin sentiment

• Authorities arrested several of his allies and issued warnings to social media companies

AFP | Moscow

Opposition figure Alexei Navalny yesterday de-nounced Kremlin pres-

sure and a biased judiciary dur-ing a hearing in which he was ordered to remain behind bars ahead of anti-government pro-tests this weekend.

Several of his allies were de-tained following police raids on their apartments and offices hours before the verdict and in the run-up to Sunday’s rally out-side the FSB security service’s headquarters.

“This is blatant lawlessness to intimidate me and other people,” Navalny told the court yesterday via video link from a high-security detention centre in Moscow.

Police detained the 44-year-old anti-graft campaigner at a Moscow airport after he re-turned to Russia on January 17 from Germany, where he had been recovering from a near-fa-tal poisoning with a nerve toxin.

A makeshift court at a police station last week ordered Na-valny placed in custody until February 15.

His lawyer Olga Mikhailo-va told reporters after yester-day’s hearing that she intends to appeal the decision, but that “hopes are not high” for success.

Police on Wednesday carried out searches at Navalny’s flat in Moscow and the homes of his allies over alleged violations of

coronavirus restrictions dur-ing anti-Kremlin protests last week.

Detentions, criminal probesIvan Zhdanov, the head of

Navalny’s FBK Anti-Corruption Foundation, said prominent aide Lyubov Sobol and Naval-ny’s brother Oleg were detained for 48 hours as suspects in a probe launched by the interior ministry.

Searches were also carried out at the flat of Navalny’s wife Yulia, and in the office of FBK, which is known for its investiga-tions into the wealth of Russia’s elites.

Police also arrived at the home of Navalny’s doctor An-astasia Vasilyeva, who was de-tained for 48 hours too.

In a video posted on Twitter by Vasilyeva’s press secretary, the doctor was playing Beethov-en on a piano as people in uni-form arrived at the door.

Tens of thousands of people across Russia rallied last week-

end in support of Navalny, who is facing charges of violating the terms of a 2014 suspended sentence and could be jailed for two and a half years.

Officials have threatened to fine social media including In-stagram, Twitter and TikTok for failing to delete posts urg-ing young people to join the rallies.

Protests in Russia are banned if they are not approved by the authorities, as are calls for peo-ple under 18 to join in.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters yesterday that the state did not want social networks to become “platforms to announce illegal protests”.

The Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said it had launched a probe against Leonid Volkov, the head of Nav-alny’s regional network, for per-suading young people to protest.

‘Pay the price’The opposition plans to hold

more rallies on Sunday, which in

Moscow will take place outside the headquarters of the FSB, the security agency that Navalny says targeted him in the poison-ing attack on President Vladimir Putin’s orders.

Nearly 4,000 people were de-tained last Saturday at the un-sanctioned rallies, which have sparked a series of criminal in-vestigations.

Rights group Amnesty Inter-national yesterday said Russian authorities “appear shamelessly bent on violating human rights by silencing their critics” and called their actions a “coward-ly attempt” to prevent further protests in Navalny’s support.

The Moscow prosecutor’s of-fice said it had sent out warn-ings ahead of Sunday’s rally to six individuals and five inter-net platforms, without naming them.

Despite pressure from au-thorities and threats of arrest, the opposition appears unwill-ing to back down.

Once-jailed populist Japarov sworn in as Kyrgyz president

AFP | Bishkek

Populist Sadyr Japarov was sworn in as pres-

ident of ex-Soviet Kyr-gyzstan yesterday, com-pleting a remarkable trans-formation from prisoner to president in the space of a few months.

Japarov, 52, was serving jail time on hostage-taking charges before he was freed during a political crisis over a parliamentary vote in Oc-tober, beginning a dizzying rise to the top of the lead-ership. He won a January 10 presidential election by landslide with close to 80 percent of the vote.

Japarov yesterday swore to “preserve the integrity of the people and the se-curity of the country” as he placed his hand on the Kyrgyz constitution, which is set to be overhauled in the coming months. Voters chose a presidential form of government over a par-liamentary model in a ref-erendum held in parallel to the presidential vote.

A Kyrgyz cabinet official said Monday that Japarov would make his first foreign trip as president to Russia, where hundreds of thou-sands of Kyrgyz live and work. Moscow has taken a dim view of political up-heavals in the mountainous country of 6.5 million that looks to next-door China for loans and investment.

Stop endless referendum talk, UK PM Johnson tells ScotlandPM says during Scotland visit that nationalists should accept 2014 vote was once in a generation

• Johnson visited Scotland to try to stem growing support for a new independence referendum

Reuters | Washington

Prime Minister Boris John-son told Scottish nation-alists yesterday to stop

talking “endlessly” about a new independence referendum, saying most people wanted to see Britain “bouncing back more strongly together” after the COVID-19 pan-demic eases.

On a trip to Scotland to try to stem growing support for another referendum, Johnson opted for a blunt message, saying independ-ence supporters had their chance in 2014 in a vote they had agreed at the time was “a once-in-a-gen-eration event”.

The bonds that tie England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland together in a $3 trillion economy have been severely strained by both Britain’s exit from the European Union and Johnson’s handling of the coro-navirus outbreak.

Opinion surveys indicate a ma-jority of Scots would now favour breaking apart the 314-year-old union between England and Scot-land.

But Johnson, whose unpopular-ity runs deep in Scotland accord-ing to opinion polls, suggested he

was sticking to his position of not approving another referendum, which the Scottish National Party needs to hold a legal vote.

“I don’t think that the right thing to do is to talk endlessly about another referendum when I think what the people of the country and the people of Scot-land want in particular is to fight this pandemic,” Johnson said at a laboratory just outside Edin-burgh.

“I don’t see the advantage of getting lost in pointless constitu-tional wrangling when after all we had a referendum not so very long ago,” he said.

“The very same people who...go on and on about another referen-dum also said only a few years ago, only in 2014, that this was a once-in-a-generation event - I’m inclined to stick with what they

said last time.”His visit to Scotland, at a time

when the nation is in a lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19, drew criticism from Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and her Scottish National Party (SNP) who questioned whether it qualified as “essential” under coronavirus guidelines.

‘Part of the PM’s job’Johnson’s spokesman de-

fended the trip, saying it was “a fundamental part of the prime minister’s job to go out and see businesses and communities and people”, particularly during the pandemic.

Sturgeon, who runs Scotland’s semi-autonomous government, is hoping a strong SNP performance in its May 6 parliamentary elec-tion would give her the mandate

to hold a second referendum. If Scotland became independ-

ent, the United Kingdom - already grappling with the economic con-sequences of Brexit and the pan-demic - would lose about a third of its landmass and almost a 10th of its population.

Scotland voted against in-dependence by 55% to 45% in 2014. But a majority of Scots also backed staying in the EU in the 2016 Brexit referendum - though a majority in the United King-dom overall, including England, Johnson’s base, voted to leave - and Scottish nationalists say this boosts their case for secession.

Johnson’s Cabinet Office Min-ister, Michael Gove, himself Scot-tish, told Sky News: “At the mo-ment, when we are prioritising the fight against the disease and also the need for economic recov-ery in due course, talking about changing the constitution and so on is just a massive distraction.”

Canada ex-governor general created ‘poisoned’ work environment: reportsAFP | Ottawa

A damning report on work-place harassment claims

against ex-governor general Julie Payette, Queen Elizabeth II’s rep-resentative in Canada, describes her as “hostile,” “poisoned,” and “toxic,” news outlets reported.

Payette, a 57-year-old former astronaut, resigned from the post last yesterday after holding the largely ceremonial position since 2017. Canadian media, including the country’s biggest outlets, ob-tained a redacted version of the report on Wednesday evening un-der an access to information law. The document was ordered by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government in July.

“Yelling, screaming, aggressive conduct, demeaning comments and public humiliations,” are among the behaviors it lists.

The testimony comes from 92 employees, ex-employees and other individuals familiar with the work environment at Ride-au Hall, the official residence of the governor general, including some 20 people who reported acts of harassment. Nearly half the feedback collected in the re-port by independent consulting firm Quintet referenced a “hos-

tile or negative” environment, or both.

More than a quarter of re-spondents spoke of a “toxic” or

“poisoned” atmosphere, accord-ing to the 132-page report sum-marized by broadcasters CBC and CTV as well as the Globe and Mail daily.

The report concluded that there was a serious problem re-quiring the immediate attention of Canada’s Privy Council Office, which supports the prime minis-ter and cabinet.

According to the report, em-ployees complained that they did not have independent channels through which to raise concerns about the work environment at Rideau Hall.

New Zealand urges Australia to ‘show respect’ to China AFP | Wellington

A senior New Zealand minister advised Aus-

tralia to adopt his country’s softly-softly approach to Chi-na yesterday, a rare public disagreement between the neighbours on how to deal with a more assertive Beijing.

The comments -- which closely echo Chinese gov-ernment complaints -- are likely to anger Canberra, while exposing the different approaches towards China by New Zealand and its “Five Eyes” intelligence partners Australia, the United States, Canada and Britain.

Pointing to Wellington’s recent success in trade talks with China, Trade Minister Damien O’Connor urged Australia to show more “re-spect” to Beijing.

“I can’t speak for Australia and the way it runs its dip-lomatic relationships, but clearly if they were to follow us and show respect, I guess a little more diplomacy from time to time and be cautious with wording, then they too could hopefully be in a simi-lar situation,” he said.

A highly contagious new variant of the virus, which emerged in southeast England at the end of last year, has led to a soaring number of infections across Britain with cases and deaths reaching record levels.

u Mexican telecoms billionaire Carlos Slim, one of the world’s richest men, has been hospitalized with Covid-19 but is doing well, a family spokesman said. The 80-year-old tycoon is “hospitalized only for monitoring and is in very good health,” Arturo Elias Ayub said. The tycoon’s son, Carlos Slim Domit, announced on Twitter on Monday that his father was being treated for Covid-19 and had only mild symptoms.

of pregnancies with foetal defects, as conservative policies increasingly take root in one of Europe’s most devout Catholic countries. The Oct. 22 ruling had led to weeks of massive protests, forcing the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) government to delay its implementation.

Demi Lovato to star in NBC comedy ‘Hungry’ANI | Washington

American singer and actor Demi Lovato is returning to her TV roots! The star

will feature in a comedy project titled ‘Hun-gry’, which is in the works at NBC.

The 28-year-old singer is all set to headline the up-coming project which follows friends in a food issues group “as they help each other look for love, success, and the perfect thing in the fridge that’s going to make it all better,” reported Variety.

The network has given the show a put pilot com-mitment, which means if it does n o t a i r a s a series, it will premiere as a special at least. Lovato will ex-ecutive produce and star in the series, with ‘Frasier’ and ‘Will and Grace’ fame producer Suzanne Martin helm-

ing the show.‘Will and Grace’ star Sean

Hayes will also executive pro-duce under his production company. Lovato guest-starred

alongside Hayes in the ‘Will and Grace’ revival last year.

Aside from her stint on the American sit-com ‘Will and Grace’, Lovato has starred on several TV shows in the years since ‘Sonny With a Chance’. She was in two episodes

of ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ and

g u e s t -s t a r r e d as Dani, Santana’s (Naya Rivera) love interest in four ep-isodes of ‘Glee’ in 2013 and 2014. She also appeared as a patient in one epi-

sode of ‘Grey ’s Anatomy’ in 2010.According to E!

News, the singer has been vocal about strug-

gling with and recover-ing from bulimia. She also sought treatment

for her eating disorder during a 2010 rehab and has been open about her subsequent relapses. In March 2020, she spoke to American come-dian Ellen Dege-neres about a peri-od where she felt like her life and her food were controlled by her team.

“My life, I just felt, was

so--and I hate to use this word--but I felt like it was controlled by so many people around me,” she had said earlier.

“If I was in my hotel room at night, they would take the phone out of the ho-tel room so I couldn’t call room service. Or, if there was fruit in my hotel room, they would take it out because that’s ex-tra sugar. We’re not talking about, like, brownies, and cookies, and candies and stuff. It was fruit,” she added.

Billie Eilish reveals she ‘wasn’t in a great mental place’ when she released her debut albumANI | Washington

American singer-song-writer Billie Eilish sing-er has revealed that she

wasn’t ‘in a great mental place’ when she created her 2019 de-but album ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’

According to E!News, the 19-year-old songstress revealed the same in latest interview with ‘Vanity Fair’, which was published.

And while she admitted that “parts of it were great” and she “love that album” the 11-time Grammy winner evaluated her emotions during that time and

decided to begin talking to a therapist.

Since then, she noted being in a better place, especially while recording her current work. She expressed her new music, “feels exactly how I want it to. There isn’t one song, or one part of one song, that I wish was this or that I wish it was that.”

During the interview, Eilish also revealed what she’s been up to when she’s not record-ing music, including ordering online.

The ‘Lovely’ songstress as-serted, “It’s a really weird posi-tion I’m in. I feel kind of stupid because I’m like, I don’t know how much Froot Loops are. I tried to order one box of Froot Loops and I was like, Oh yeah, sure. It’s USD 35. I didn’t know that that’s expensive. I or-dered 70 boxes.”

As reported by E!News, outside of her upcoming documentary, ‘Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blur-ry’, the artist has done well chronicling her life on social media, like any average young-ster. However, the highly an-

t i c i p a t e d movie will g i ve f a n s access to an even deeper Billie.

Kevin Hart joins cast of ‘Borderlands’ANI | Washington

Actor and comedian Kevin Hart has joined

the cast of ‘Borderlands’, which is a movie adaptation of the most popular video game.

Hart is set to play the role of Roland, a skilled ex-sol-dier-turned-mercenary, in the Lionsgate film. The movie, which also stars ac-tor Cate Blanchett, is being helmed by American film-maker Eli Roth, reported Variety.

“I am thrilled to be work-ing with Kevin. Borderlands is a different kind of role for him, and we are excited to thrill audiences with a side of Kevin they have never seen before. He is going to be an amazing Roland,” said Roth, whose credits include ‘The House With a Clock in its Walls’ and ‘Death Wish’.

Craig Mazin, who created the acclaimed HBO minise-ries ‘Chernobyl’, wrote the latest draft of the screenplay. ‘Borderlands’ is based on the famous role-playing shoot-er game that launched in 2009. The game, which has spawned several sequels, takes place on the planet of Pandora.

Zendaya reveals why she will never be ashamed of her ‘Disney Kid’ pastANI | Washington

American actor Zendaya recently revealed that she is fine by being known as a ‘Disney kid’.

According to E!News, Zendaya appeared for a virtual discussion with ‘Promising Young Wom-

an’ actor Carey Mulligan on ‘Variety’s Actors on Actor’s series. During the conversation, Mulligan asked the star why it is that Zendaya still consid-ers herself a ‘Disney kid,’ even after winning an Emmy. She remarked, “You surely can’t think of yourself as a Disney kid now.”

But, as the ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ star explained, “The thing is, I am. And to a degree, I am grateful for that. That’s where I started, and I learned so much from that experience.”

“It’s just kind of been this slow progression, and I am happy that it’s all been to prove it to myself and not to anybody else, you know?” she continued. “I embrace it a little bit. It’s part of my heritage to a degree.”

Not that Zendaya hasn’t been worried about the perceived limitations it could place on her career. She shared her shock over being cast in ‘Euphoria,’ noting that she started out as a poppy teen in Disney Channel’s ‘Shake It Up’, but the gritty show’s director Sam Levinson still thought she could play an angsty Rue.

Aubameyang is a doubt for Arsenal-Man Utd showdown due to mother’s ‘health issues’AFP | London

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is a doubt for Arsenal’s

Premier League clash against Manchester United on Saturday after missing games due to his mother’s “health issues”.

The club captain was absent for the FA Cup defeat at South-ampton on Saturday as well as the 3-1 Premier League victory against the same opposition three days later.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta refused to answer questions yesterday about whether Aubameyang had travelled abroad to spend time with his mother and if quarantine rules would therefore prevent him playing the weekend.

Asked if the forward had left Britain, Arteta replied: “He had to support his family and he had to be with them.”

Pushed on the matter of potential quarantine for his captain if he did travel, Arteta said: “I don’t know what will happen.”

It is understood Aubameyang would need a negative corona-virus test before a return was possible.

Aubameyang had travelled with the squad for the FA Cup tie on Saturday before leaving just hours before kick-off.

“Hey guys, Thank you so much for all the messages and calls over the last few days,” he wrote on Instagram on Wednesday.

“My mother is going through some health issues and I had to be there for her. She’s already much better now and I will be

back home tonight.”A r t e t a s a i d t h e c l u b

would continue to support Aubameyang as his availabili-ty for the weekend fixture re-mains a mystery.

“I don’t know,” he said when asked if Aubameyang would be back. I spoke with him yester-day. Things are looking better at the moment, but we are going to

have to wait and see.”Aubameyang is not the only

key member of Arteta’s squad who could be forced to watch the United game from the side-lines.

Thomas Partey limped out of the victory on Tuesday, as did in-form youngster Emile Smith Rowe, while Kieran Tierney did not travel to the south coast.

“Let’s see how they come through training,” Arteta re-plied when asked about the fit-ness of Partey and Smith Rowe. Tierney is expected to feature.

Martin Odegaard, 22, joined on loan from Real Madrid this week but it is believed his lack of match fitness means he is unlikely to start.

Arteta described the Norway international, who signed for Real as a 16-year-old, as a “re-ally creative player who’s really comfortable on the ball in tight spaces”.

Indispensable consistency has worked wonders for Stanley

Pringle.That proved enough for the

Barangay Ginebra guard to win the coveted Best Player of the Conference (BPC) award in the Philippine Basketball Associa-tion (PBA).

It was Pringle’s biggest indi-vidual award since joining the PBA. He had previously cap-tured the Rookie of the Year in the 2014-15 season and was a Mythical First Team selec-tion in 2017-18, achieving both feats while still playing for GlobalPort.

He paid tribute to his team-mates for taking home the maiden plum of his PBA career after leading Barangay Ginebra to its first Philippine Cup title in 13 years.

Arguably the most consistent player in their title run Pringle finished sixth in the Statistical Points race but his consistent play during Ginebra’s success-ful title run in the bubble was able to convince voters com-posed of the media, players and the PBA Commissioner’s Office of his worthiness for the honor as the “Bubble MVP.”

The talented player normed 18.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.0 steals.

“I always believe that you shouldn’t really look at your stats unless it’s turnovers or maybe field goal percentage,” Pringle said after his name was announced in the PBA Awards Night which aired on TV5 and its online platforms.

“But like I said, I ain’t really looking at my stats, I’m here to

help the team win. And as far as awards, your teammates are gonna put you in the position to win so it’s just as much as their award as yours so shout out to all my teammates.

Pringle won the plum edging Matthew Wright, and taking the trophy at the expense of stats leader Bobby Ray Parks, Roger Pogoy, Calvin Abueva, and CJ Perez.

“Just being nominated for me

was a blessing. It’s their award too,” said Pringle, who edged Phoenix Super LPG’s Wright in the closest BPC race in history with 1,640 points as compared to 1,578 for the latter.

“I think it’s really hard to pick a player. I know you guys were having a tough time picking a player. All the players deserve it. I’m looking forward to next conference to play hard,” he said.

Pringle is the seventh Gine-bra player to claim the Best Player of the Conference award, joining Marlou Aquino (1996 Governors’ Cup), Eric Menk (2004 Fiesta Conference and 2004-05 Philippine Cup), Mark Caguioa (2006-07 Philippine Cup, 2012 Commissioner’s Cup and 2012 Governors’ Cup), Jayjay Helterbrand (2008 and 2009 Fiesta Conference), LA Tenorio (2013 Commissioner’s Cup) and Greg Slaughter (2017 Governors’ Cup).

India cricket chief Ganguly undergoes second heart operation in weeks

AFP | New Delhi

India’s cricket chief and former batting star Sourav

Ganguly underwent a second heart bypass operation in less than four weeks yesterday, but doctors said he was “fine” after the surgery.

Hundreds of chanting sup-porters gathered outside the Kolkata hospital where the 48-year-old Indian cricket leg-end was admitted on Wednes-day after complaining of new chest pains.

“Sourav Ganguly has under-gone successful angioplasty and two stents have been im-planted in his two cardiac ar-teries,” Saroj Mondal, one of the doctors treating Ganguly, said at the hospital.

“He is fine and good. He will be kept under observation for a few days,” the doctor added.

Ganguly underwent a sim-ilar operation on January 3 after being rushed to hospital when he was working out in a gym.

He was warned then that he could need a second operation.

Youths waiting outside the hospital where Ganguly is resting chanted his name and shouted: “We are with you, we want to see you playing cricket again.”

Shikhar Dhawan and other current members of the Indian cricket team sent messages of support on social media.

Ganguly, a left-handed open-er, retired from Test cricket in 2008, having accumulated 7,212 runs including 16 cen-turies -- the first of which he made at Lord’s on his debut.

Tuchel accepts he must deliver trophies at ChelseaNewly-appointed boss Thomas Tuchel says he joined Chelsea due to a ‘hunger of titles’

• Tuchel got off to an underwhelming start with a 0-0 draw at home to Wolves

AFP | London

Thomas Tuchel accepts he will be judged on re-sults after becoming the

13th Chelsea manager of owner Roman Abramovich’s 17-year reign in charge of the Premier League club.

The Blues sacked club legend Frank Lampard, who is Chel-sea’s all-time top goalscorer, on Monday after a run of five de-feats in eight Premier League games.

Tuchel got off to an under-whelming start with a 0-0 draw at home to Wolves on Wednes-day, just 24 hours after he was appointed.

The German said a title chal-lenge was not realistic this sea-son with Chelsea 11 points adrift of leaders Manchester City, but wants to challenge for silver-ware in the FA Cup and Cham-pions League.

“If you are signing for Chelsea you are signing for the hunger of titles,” Tuchel said at his un-

veiling to the media yesterday. “You are signing for being com-petitive in every competition you play. I’m totally aware of that.

“I am here to challenge for every trophy we play for. Real-istically this year it is the Cham-pions League and the FA Cup, to speak now about the Premier League title is not realistic.

“The club makes this very clear in the end -- at Chelsea it is about results.

“It is about results for us as managers. We always try to bring in performance, to im-

prove players, increase their value but I’m very realistic, I’m in a club whose DNA it is to win and go for trophies.”

Despite the upheaval of coaching changes, no English club have won more trophies than Chelsea during the Abram-ovich era.

The Russian billionaire bank-rolled a £220 million ($300 mil-lion) investment in new players during the summer transfer window but Lampard failed to get the best from them.

Tuchel will be expected to get compatriots Timo Werner and

Kai Havertz back to the level that lured Chelsea into spend-ing more than £120 million on two of the Bundesliga’s biggest talents.

Despite winning Ligue 1 twice in his two full seasons in charge and leading Paris Saint-Germain to their first-ever Champions League final last season, Tuchel was sacked by the French cham-pions late last year.

The 47-year-old had less than a month out of the game and ad-mitted he faces a very different challenge in the Premier League compared with PSG’s dominance of French football.

But Tuchel is looking forward to doing battle with big names such as Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

play for. Realistically this year it is the

Champions League and the FA Cup, to

Excitement builds as Dettori, Atzeni and Barzalona arrive in Bahrain ahead of Crown Prince’s CupTDT | Manama

A high-quality of field of 12 has been declared for Fri-

day’s 1m 2f (2000m) Grade 1 Crown Prince’s Cup, one of the three principal races in the Bahrain racing calendar, along with the Bahrain International Trophy in November and King’s Cup in March.

The field is headed by 2020 Bahrain International hero Sim-sir who, in November, narrowly denied an excellent internation-al field which included Global Giant (John Gosden) and Sov-ereign (Aidan O’Brien). Simsir, who is trained by Fawzi Nass, had benefitted from an enter-prising ride from Scottish jock-ey Lee Newman in November but Nass has opted for Dutch jockey Adrie De Vries in tomor-row’s 1m 2f contest.

Fawzi Nass said: “Simsir has enjoyed a nice break since his win in the Bahrain International Trophy. I think he has improved since then and has definitely strengthened up. The standard of racing in Bahrain is a lot more competitive than it used to be four or five years ago.”

Frankie Dettori has won the Crown Prince’s Cup four times in the last six years and returns to Bahrain with another live contender in the shape of the Allan Smith-trained and Al Adi-

yat Racing-owned Rayounpour. Rayounpour, who like Simsir is a former Mick Halford inmate, beat four of his rivals over 1m 4f (2400m) in a Grade 2 con-test on 1 January and his trainer believes the lightly raced five-year-old has improved for that run.

Allan Smith said: “Rayoun-pour won over both 1m 2f and 1m4f for Mick Halford so we know he’s got the pace for this. It looks a good renewal with the likes of Simsir and Litiga-tor in the field. Frankie knows the Bahrain circuit well and I’m looking forward to it.”

Andrea Atzeni had a tough decision to make between the

two former Roger Varian hors-es, Litigator and Gold Wand. Gold Wand ran in last year’s Investec Oaks at Epsom be-fore going on to win the Listed Galtres Stakes at York’s Ebor Festival in August in decisive fashion, whilst Litigator was twice a winner in France before finishing 3rd in the Group 3 St Simon Stakes at Newbury in October. Atzeni has opted for Litigator, citing his speed and homework.

Andrea Atzeni said: “Liti-gator is in great shape and his homework has been very good. It was a very tight decision between the two, but on his homework, he has a little bit

more speed than the filly. Both of them have won over 1m 4f (2400m) so this would probably be their minimum trip. It’s a fair track with a long straight and the best horse normally wins here.”

Salman bin Rashed Alkhalifa, Executive Director of the REHC said: “It is one of the most im-portant meetings of our season. It’s brilliant to have so many of the world’s best jockeys riding here in Bahrain and it shows the quality of horses we cur-rently have running here. The growth we are making is very exciting and we look forward to another brilliant day of racing tomorrow.”

Cristiano Ronaldo broke coronavirus rules: reportsAFP | Milan

Cristiano Ronaldo broke coronavirus travel restric-

tions with a trip to a mountain resort, according to media re-ports yesterday.

Juventus striker Ronaldo allegedly travelled to Cour-mayeur, 150 kilometres north-west of the Serie A club’s Turin headquarters, for his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez’ birthday.

When contacted by AFP, Juve declined to comment.

Rodriguez, who turned 27 on Wednesday, apparently posted a video of the couple on a snowmobile on Instagram.

She later removed it, but it was picked up by several Ital-ian news sites.

The Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper said Ronaldo and Rodriguez spent Tuesday night in a hotel and took a ride in the snow the next morning, before returning to Turin.

Under current Italian coro-navirus rules, the couple should not have left the town of Turin. They each risk a fine of 400 euros ($485).

The 35-year-old footballer has been embroiled in coro-navirus-related controversy before. He was criticised in October for travelling to Por-tugal while Juventus were in isolation after two virus cases.

Ronaldo then tested positive himself, and returned to Italy to spend a couple of weeks in isolation at home.

At the time, Italian Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora accused the star of “violating” coronavirus restrictions.

Yasir helps Pakistan foil South Africa fightYasir Shah strikes late to put Pakistan in charge against South Africa in first Test

• Yasir struck twice and Nauman once to leave the tourists on 187-4 at close

AFP | Karachi

Pakistan spinners Yasir Shah and Nauman Ali grabbed three wickets

in the space of 10 runs shortly before the close to halt South Africa’s fightback on the third day of the first Test in Karachi yesterday.

It looked as though South Af-rica would end the day at parity after wiping out Pakistan’s big 158-run first innings lead, but Yasir struck twice and Nauman once to leave the tourists on 187-4 at close, a lead of just 29 with six second innings wickets in hand.

Nightwatchman Keshav Ma-haraj was unbeaten on two and skipper Quinton de Kock was yet to score.

“We will try to get South Africa out as soon as possible because the pitch will get diffi-cult,” said Yasir who took 3-53 from 24 overs of testing leg-spin.

“We have not won a Test for some time now, so we want to

win this Test and the series.”Earlier, the Pakistan tail

wagged effectively as they add-ed a further 70 before South Africa could take their final two wickets.

Pakistan’s 378 all out gave them a crucial first innings lead of 220.

South Africa were off to a confident start with Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar defy-ing Pakistan’s attack, and were 37 without loss at lunch.

Elgar, in visible discomfort after being hit on the left hand by a rising delivery from pac-er Shaheen Shah Afridi, was

caught by diving wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan off Yasir for 29.

Markram then added 127 for the second wicket with Ras-sie van der Dussen and at 175-1 South Africa looked to be ready to take control.

But Yasir changed the scenar-io by dismissing Dussen for a solid 64, induing him to pop up a soft catch for Abid Ali at silly mid-off. He then trapped Faf du Plessis leg-before on the back foot for 10.

In between, Markram pushed forward undertainly to Nauman, offering another soft catch for

Abid in the same position, as three wickets fell in the space of 33 balls.

Markram, who had a leg be-fore decision overturned when he was on four and survived a chance to Babar Azam off Yasir on 27, had batted with some pol-ish, hitting 10 crisp boundaries in his 74, his eighth Test fifty.

Both Yasir and Nauman will be major threats for South Af-rica on a fourth day National stadium pitch which produced 14 wickets on day one, four on the second and six on the third.
