To celebrate the upcoming release Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, St. Christopher’s School will be hosting a huge Star Wars celebration on Dec 11 in aid of ‘Feed the Need’ from 5pm to 7.30pm.The original Star Wars film will be showcased on a huge screen. There will be exciting competitions and prizes as well as fancy dress costume parade!

Usually with Halloween right around the corner, we would find kids on shopping sprees, hunting for

that perfect bucket to fill in the perfect amount of sweets. But this past week, Bahrain witnessed kids in their most compassionate avatar yet- gathering up grocery items for the needy. The idea was brought forward

by children of different schools, who decided to set up stalls and gather food items for the ‘Feed the Need’ campaign. Founded by “Michelle Bailey”, the humanitarian concept caters to people who can’t afford food. They can simply pick two items from any of the ‘Feed the Need’ refrigerators, placed all over the island. Layla Jivanjee, aged 7 told Weekender, “I loved

working together as a team, telling people about our project and collecting food for those in need. There are children like me that go to bed hungry at night; I

want to help fix that!” Ali Omer, aged 8, also added, “Helping the needy was fun and I learned a lot. It

was a really good experience.”It’s very easy to get caught up in buying the latest trends, gadgets and expensive outings but trying to be happy by collecting possessions is like trying to satisfy hunger by taping sandwiches all over your body,

says Michelle, who shared about the initiative, “This project installs the poignant

thought in our children that there are people less-fortunate than us and taking care of those souls is our global responsibility. Nothing, absolutely nothing will impact kids more than

seeing poverty up close and personal. We are helping

to raise future leaders of the world, right here in Bahrain.””The effort had generated 11 trolleys of groceries, to

fill the fridges and pledges of 515 hot meals. Till now,

there are 20 ‘Feed the Need’ fridges that have been placed and 8 more are in the pipeline.

There will be a book swap on Oct 31 at Geant Bahrain Mall, from 10am till 5pm. 170 books were purchased to support the ‘Feed the Need’ campaign. Anyone is welcome to come and swap a book for a book!

Apex court vetoes sentence

Three men get 10 years jail for burning ex MP’s cars

DT News NetworkManamaThe High Criminal Court has slapped three men with ten years behind bars each for burning two luxury cars belonging to ex-MP Ali Al Durazi. The incident prior to the case occurred in 2014 dur-ing the parliamentary elections when Al Durazi decided to run for a second term in the par-liament after he was elected unopposed in 2011.

The trio is said to have jumped over the fence of the victim’s house and poured pet-rol on the cars and set them on fire before fleeing. The blaze caused damage in the house also.

Al Hammadi attended GCC Ministerial committee meetRiyadh

Information and Parliament Affairs Minister Isa bin

Abdulrahman Al Hammadi praised the directives of the GCC leaders to boost economic, security and military cooperation and activate steps towards the GCC union.

He was speaking in the 14th meeting of the Ministerial committee in charge of following up the implementation of resolutions pertaining to joint GCC work here in the GCC Secretariat General headquarters yesterday. The Minister had led Bahrain’s delegation to the meeting.

The meeting was convened under the chairmanship of Saudi Minister of State and Member of the Cabinet for Shura Council Affairs

Mohammed bin Faisal Abusaq, in the presence of GCC Secretary General Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani.

Al Hammadi stressed that the GCC union was just a matter of time in the presence of all needed fundamentals for it, including historical, cultural, geographic and civilisational bonds as well as religion, language, kinship and common destiny.

He added that the Gulf Cooperation Council had become, since its inception in 1981, one of the most powerful economic, political and regional blocs.

He pointed out the implementation of many resolutions to boost the GCC citizenship, common market, monetary union as

well as security and military partnership.

The Minister took pride in participating in the GCC Ministerial committee meeting, lauding the implementation of more than 90 per cent of the resolutions of the Supreme and

Ministerial Councils. He also added that work

was underway to carry out the remaining resolutions by removing obstacles and taking the necessary procedures in coordination with relevant parties.

Gas subsidy had been lifted from factories and

major companies before the redirection of meat subsidy in favour of citizens, revealed Information and Parliament Affairs Minister Isa bin Abdulrahman Al Hammadi.

Speaking at the weekly session of the Council of Representatives on Tuesday, Al Hammadi said that the government put the citizen at the core of its priorities in any development project.

Al Hammadi said, “The meat subsidy had been redirected. What happened in the past was that non-citizens and commercial establishments and companies benefited from it, but now it has been redirected to the citizens. Maybe the door of discussion is still open regarding implementation mechanisms; nonetheless, the principle is

agreed by the government and the legislature.”

“There is no discrimination in the government’s implementation of subsidy redirection policy, and the Ministry of Labour and Social Development earlier announced that the cash amount would be transferred to the family breadwinner, confirming the government’s steady commitment to its policy to ensure citizens’ rights,” he added.

The Minister said the government had not begun with the meat subsidy redirection policy, but rather with gas subsidy redirection aimed at factories and companies as per the Minister of Energy’s resolution.

“Now, we are in the phase of lifting the gas commodity subsidy to match global market rates and alleviate the existing pressure on the expenditures in the budget during the current session,” Al Hammadi added.

The Cassation Court - Bahrain’s highest court-

yesterday vetoed the life sentence issued earlier against a Saudi man convicted of murder. The 53-year-old had received the equivalent 25-year sentence for stabbing his friend Ahmed Mohammed in his sleep in an apartment in Exhibition Avenue. But judges at the Cassation Court found the defendant didn’t intend

to murder his victim, though prosecutors had charged him with intentional homicide.

The ruling highlighted that the defendant denied during questioning to have deliberately murdered the 40-year-old victim as he stated that he didn’t know how he was killed. “Thus there is insufficient evidence to support the defendant’s intention to murder the victim,” the Cassation Court’s verdict read.

According to court reports,

the convict travelled with the 40-year-old Saudi victim to Bahrain for the Eid holidays in August 2012 and rented the apartment together.

He killed his compatriot following an argument. He then called his son-in-law and asked him to help get rid of Mohammed’s body. They bought a wheelchair and used it to transport the body. His accomplice, who was tried in absentia, has received six months in jail.

No earthquake related tremors were recorded

by the nation’s Seismograph station, authorities stated.

Despite recent reports that residents felt tremors in parts of Bahrain, nothing unusual was recorded by the recently launched National Seismic Monitoring Station (NSMS), the Ministry of Transportation Meteorological Directorate confirmed.

Speaking to DT News, the Acting Director of Meteorology Directorate Adel Daham stressed that the Island was safe from earthquakes at the moment. He noted that Bahrain’s geographical

position in ‘Zone 0’, which many interpret that the risk of earthquake is very low, also reaffirmed Bahrain’s relative safety. He said that the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that shook Pakistan, Afghanistan and India earlier this week had no effect on the Gulf.

“It was a 7.5 magnitude earthquake but we have not

been affected by it in any way. We did not get any such reports from our station or from the residents. There are many large buildings in Bahrain but none of them reported any tremors. We have also checked with our counterparts in United Arab Emirates (UAE) and they have also said that no such activities were noted in the Gulf,” he said.

He assured the public that there was nothing to worry about. “There is no indication of an earthquake in the Middle East. As a matter of fact, the earthquake in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India has completely subsided. If there is at all a cause for worry, we will inform the public by issuing a warning. At the moment, we have nothing to worry about,”

he said.NSMS was inaugurated

in May this year to monitor earthquakes around the world.

Alerting on the possibility for disaster in case of earthquakes

near the Bushehr nuclear plant in Iran is one of the top priorities of the Seismograph station.

“The station is functioning perfectly, it is providing us

with the information that is expected of it, we are happy with its performance. We are always collaborating with the UAE who are great help to us,” Daham added.

The 11th International Institute for Strategic

Studies (IISS) Manama Dialogue convenes in Bahrain just as Iran’s parliament has approved the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on its nuclear programme and it has caused disquiet among Iran’s immediate neighbours. This issue will be debated during the three-day Manama Dialogue, which will kick-off tomorrow, said Sir John Jenkins, Executive Director, IISS-Middle East.

Commenting on the issues to be discussed during the dialogue, he said that dramatic developments had taken place in Syria, where Iran and now Russia appear to have doubled down on the survival of the regime of Bashar Al Assad.

“In Iraq, IS and Al Sham continue to pose a radical challenge not only to the government of Haider Al Abadi, but also ideologically to Iraq’s neighbours. In Yemen, the current conflict was sparked at least in part

by the deep concern of these same neighbours about Iran’s regional activities and its apparent willingness to back

the Zaidi Huthi insurgency as an instrument of national policy. The event will focus on all these issues,” Sir John Jenkins said.

The Manama Dialogue will also see the presence of high-profile delegates. “We have senior representation – Deputy Prime Ministers, Foreign, Defence and Interior Ministers, national security advisers and senior military officers – from Europe, the US and Asia.”

“This year we shall also have strong representation from the United Nations – an important development if you believe, as I do, that what is happening in the Middle East is a global challenge that will in the end need globally guaranteed solutions,” the Executive Director of IISS-Middle East said.

“The Middle East and North Africa is at a historic inflection point. The Manama Dialogue offers a unique opportunity for decision-makers, practitioners, analysts and commentators to come together for two days of intense, focused and operational debate about the future,” Sir John Jenkins said.

Alleged arbitrary termination stirs protest in Zayed Town

Alba employees approach Labour and Social Development MinistryMuhannad Mansour/[email protected]

Manama

At least 50 Bahraini employees of Aluminium

Bahrain (Alba) walked from the factory in Askar to Labour and Social Development Ministry in Zayed Town to protest against an alleged “arbitrary termination.”

One of the protesters told DT News yesterday that 64 employees out of 100 participated in the protest to express their rejection to the factory’s decision to “arbitrarily” terminate their contracts.

The employee (identity withheld on request)

explained, “We’re part of a programme that is implemented in cooperation

between Alba and the Labour Fund (Tamkeen). The programme stipulates that we work as vocational trainees on a probation period of two years. The period completes next week and we were notified today that the contract will be terminated, despite the fact that most of us passed the required tests and job requirements.”

He added, “We walked to the Ministry and police prevented us from entering, as they said it was an illegal gathering. But, a Ministry official met us and assured that they would do the necessary to solve the issue. We’re planning another protest near the Ministry today.”

Ministry looking into the matterIn a press statement issued later yesterday, Labour and

Social Development Ministry confirmed that it’s “currently looking into the matter of the terminated Bahraini employees of Alba.”

Assistant Undersecretary

of Labour Affairs Dr. Mohammed Al Ansari assured that “Ministry officials will convene today with Alba representatives to discuss the legal framework of the termination of the employees, after they filed an official complaint against the establishment, demanding to be settled and to maintain their jobs.”

Dr. Al Ansari added, “The Ministry will investigate the reasons behind terminating the contracts of the employees and will look into the legal aspects of the termination procedures.

T h e a s s i s t a n t undersecretary reaffirmed the Ministry’s keenness on protecting the rights of employees and employers alike.

Contractual obligations always fulfilled, says Alba

On their part, Alba said in a statement that it had “notified all Vocational Trainees (VT) earlier yesterday that their contracts will expire as per their respective Vocational Trainee Contracts, in 24 months from the date of entering into such with Alba. All Vocational Trainees need to undergo an assessment, as per their respective contracts, and shall be offered employment upon successful completion.”

Explaining further, the statement read, “Alba always fulfils its contractual obligations vis-à-vis its contractual partners, specifically, as in this case with the relevant VTs, Tamkeen or other related parties.”

Al Hamala housing project nears completion: Ministry

Parliamentary Legislative and Legal Affairs

Committee member MP Khalid Al Shaer said in a telephone conversation with DT News yesterday that “44 of the sacked employees will be reinstated within 2 to 3 days.”

“They will be provided with annual contracts that will be automatically renewed. The remaining, who showed poor performances during the probation period, will be given three months to improve and will be reassessed,” Al Shaer assured.

He opined, “Considering

the ongoing global economic crisis and the fluctuating aluminium prices, the company is not obliged to maintain trainees. But, we sensed a national obligation in their decision to support Bahraini youth and grant them a second chance. This orientation comes in line with the reformation project launched by HM the King that enables Bahraini youth.”

The MP added that “Alba assured that if economic situations come back to normal, the trainees will be permanently employed at the establishment.”

Al Hamala housing project is in the final stages, with

the completion of about 95 per cent works.

Minister of Housing, Basim Alhamer, said that the project was within the framework of the Ministry’s comprehensive plan to meet the housing needs of those on the waiting lists in the Northern Governorate.

The housing units keys will be delivered to its beneficiaries after the completion of all

construction and infrastructure works. The housing units are already allocated to them according to seniority, which covered the old applications in Northern Governorate.

“Priority in the distribution is given to the old applications from country’s citizens and to those in the surrounding areas,” Alhamer said.

He explained that Al Hamala housing project contained 233 housing units with facilities that provide all kinds of comfort to citizens such as open areas,

garden, shops and a mosque that was built on 5.5 hectares.

The Housing Minister added that the housing units were designed to suit the Bahraini family’s needs and the project was compatible with the Bahrain 2030 Economic Vision to reduce the waiting lists by providing all the necessary supplies for the family. The allocation of housing units to beneficiaries of Al Hamala and nearby areas will preserve the fabric and social cohesion, he added.

It’s creative time for make-up artists as Halloween approaches Santhosh Rajendran/[email protected]

Manama

Don’t wonder if you bump into shouting

little witches, paper-bagged hobgoblins, people with rubber-masked faces and bed sheet ghosts these days. Yes, it’s Halloween time in Bahrain. Halloween is celebrated on the evening of October 31, which is the evening before the Christian feast of All Saint’s Day.

Nowadays, Halloween is also a festive season for kids offering fun and enjoyment to them. It is an occasion to dress up as little

monsters, ghosts or witches for them. Over the time the custom of adults dressing up as demons changed and the children took over.

Clubs in Bahrain will be packed with party goers, dressed up like demons and witches. But it’s a daunting task for the make-up artists who create these horrifying looks. Divine Labor, a photographer-turned- makeup artist, is trained for Halloween make-up. A resident of Bahrain since 2010, she specializes in special effects make-up.

Usually, by the end of October she is busy with her own schedules, doing make-up for youngsters and even children

and getting them ready for the Halloween day.

“It was in mid-2000 when I took the decision to pursue make-up as my full-time profession. Meeting my college mate, while doing my photography course, was the turning point in my life. “He owned a studio for make-up and encouraged me to come into this profession,” says Divine, who has undergone professional training from Grimas workshop, Holland.

She creates the atrocious looks with nothing more than a bit of make-up and the techniques she has acquired from the training. She has even a legion of fans here. Divine transmutes people

into bloodthirsty zombies, creepy clowns and terrifying witches.

She takes 40 minutes to three hours to create these ‘quaint figures’. “I just loved the costumes

and make-up, it really coins a creative series in me and excites to try and experiment different looks. For me Halloween has always been an exhilarating feel and I have adored it. Anything slightly creepy or gothic makeup draws me in like magnet,” she explains.

“In Philippines, we run lot many competitions, especially in malls, colleges and other places. But here I feel that the celebrations are club-centric. People go out in the night to

the clubs to enjoy the Halloween day,” Divine observes.

Divine has participated in a contest titled, “Middle-East Beauty World 2015,” in Dubai. There she was the sole contestant, who successfully displayed a Halloween make-up, while others followed normal make-up such as bridal and natural make-up.

Divine feels happy when her clients see the transformation. She gets more energy through the feedback she gets from her clients. Divine Labor

Bahrainis boost tourism in Saudi

Bahrainis constituted 33pc of Saudi visitors last yearDT News [email protected]

Manama

If you are surprised by the number of Saudi registered

cars on Bahraini roads during weekends, you will be even more amazed to know that Bahrain contributes a huge amount to the Saudi tourism industry.

Bahraini and Kuwaiti tourists constituted 33 per cent each of Saudi Arabia’s visitors last year, according to a report released by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTNH). This is followed by Qatar and the United Arabic Emirates, the study showed.

According to reports, over

300,000 Saudi citizens visited Bahrain during Eid Al Adha season and spent BD40 million in Bahrain. On the other hand, 6.6m tourists from the Arabian Gulf spent BD2.28 billion in Saudi last year, according to the report.

Tourism Information and Research Centre (MAS), the statistical arm of SCTNH, said 11.3 million people who visited Saudi last year from GCC countries and among them, 4.7 million were one-day visitors. But one-day visitor without an overnight stay is not considered a tourist by global tourism concept, reported Saudi’s daily, Arab News.

The Mecca province including Mecca, Jeddah and Taif, is the most preferred

destination of GCC tourists. Macca is followed by Madinah, Eastern Province, Riyadh and Asir. In the first half of this year, Saudi received around

7.4 million GCC visitors, registering an increase of 25 per cent compared with the same period last year. SCTNH

plays a major role in promoting Saudi travel companies in organising tours for GCC nationals by engaging them in specialised travel exhibitions

such as Arabian Travel Market, which is held annually in Dubai, and the Travel and Tourism Exhibition in Kuwait.

Closure of liquor outlets on Reef Island gets MPs’ nod

An MP alleged that the developer illegally changed the scheme of the area

Manama

The shutdown of liquor selling outlets on Reef

Island in the Capital received a parliamentary nod recently.

The decision comes after a group of five MPs presented a proposal last March, demanding to cease the selling of alcohol beverages on the island, as they claimed to have received multiple complaints from the residents of the island.

The proposal, which also insisted on halting “illegal” construction works on Reef Island, was voted on during

Parliament Council’s weekly session on Tuesday.

The council reviewed the replies of several Governmental authorities, including Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry, Interior Ministry, Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry and the Capital General Secretariat.

Various replies received stated that the sale of alcohol beverages on the island was

legal, yet, it was announced that one violating outlet was detected and the matter was now being progressed through legal channels.

At the same time, the authorities confirmed that the existing buildings on the island were constructed legally and one project was stopped, while permissions to initiate works were obtained.

Speaking before the council on Tuesday, one of the

presenters, MP Jamal Dawood said, “The issue is widening as authorities are avoiding taking responsibility and swapping it among them. The replies show that no one wants to take responsibility. They advised to file a case and wait for the judicial order.”

“Residents paid money and invested on this island. Whatever the developer has done by opening bars and constructing new buildings is against residents’ morals and contracts. It’s a residential area. We demand the Ministries to be transparent and take their responsibilities. If no one gave permit to the developer to sell alcohol on the island, then who did? Whose responsibility is it? This matter is highly rejected by residents,” Dawood added.

Speaking on similar lines, fellow MP Mohsen Al Bakry said, “What is the categorisation of these areas? We didn’t receive an appropriate answer, whether it’s residential, commercial or investment areas. Residents want to be relieved, as selling alcohol on the island invites further troubles.”

Al Bakry claimed, “The developer isn’t cooperative with residents or MPs.”

“They say they’re supported by higher authorities in the Kingdom. They can’t be above the law,” Al Bakry noted.

Former Councillor and present Parliamentarian Ali Al Muqla also spoke about the matter saying, “The developer illegally changed the scheme of the area. He blocked sea fronts that residents paid to enjoy. The developer should be held accountable for not informing the residents of the intention to block the view in front of their homes.”

MP Adel Al Assoomy commented, “Investors should get all their rights in Bahrain, as it was constitutionally ensured. But at the same time, they should commit to the law.

If we allow them to overlook the rules and regulations of the country, others will behave in the same way and things will be chaotic. The Kingdom has a long experience in welcoming investors and considering our reputation in this regard I call upon the related parties to take this matter as a priority.”

Meanwhile, Manama Municipality Director General Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, who was present during the session, opined that “all buildings on the island are permitted.”

Anyway, this didn’t prevent the MPs from voting for the proposal, which will be soon referred to Shura Council for further discussion.

held in April, Citi Bahrain conducted its second internship programme for the St. Christopher School’s students on its premises in September.

The first programme had five students from Grades 11 and 12, but the second batch had 10 students of the same levels as earlier. “We wanted to offer students the opportunity to learn how a global bank works with access to more than 100 cities around the world and at the same time caters to its clients in each city,” said Navneet Kampani, Consumer Banking Head, Citi Bahrain.

“This programme falls within Citi’s keenness on sharing its knowledge

and experience with the future generation to help explore different career opportunities,” he explained.

The purpose of the internship programme was to give the students an insight into how each department functions and the role each team member plays towards the overall structure and daily tasks carried out in the bank.

Describing the programme as “amazing”, Shawn

The internship helped shape my future career and gave me fruitful insight into the path that I would like to pursue in the future.”

At the end of the two-week internship, the students were

given a task of preparing a presentation on the bank’s products and services to about 50 guests, including their parents, teachers, friends and other invitees.

Bahrain economy blessed with steady growth: OfficialDT News [email protected]

Bahrain Chapter of the Institute of Chartered

Accountants of India (BCICAI)’s flagship event under the theme CA’s- Fostering growth and good governance’ will be held over two days, October 30 and 31, in Manama. The Chairperson of BCICAI, CA Kapil Batra, has a chat with DT News regarding the event and his views about the profession, the challenges and the future. Excerpts:

Can you explain the emphasis of the theme ‘CA’s- Fostering growth and good governance’?

The purpose of this event is to reinforce our belief in the core values of the human kind and CA professionals, which have stood all tests of time. There is no business or

institution in the world where the governing bodies do not face an ethical dilemma to choose between quick success and sustainable reputation. Companies may successfully run for ages with either option chosen but peace of mind and prosperity would coexist only when the decisions are taken with honesty and integrity towards the ecosystem at large. All the guest speakers invited to this event are masters of their chosen field of profession and I am sure that the audience would be spellbound.

This explains the theme and purpose of this event.

What role BCICAI plays in Bahrain? What are the plans ahead for the year?

BCICAI is an overseas chapter of the parent institution in India and is the largest body of the finance professionals in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

We come under the umbrella of Bahrain Accountants Association. The chapter works for the professional advancement of its members and also contributes towards the less privileged human friends through contribution in various forms as the resources allow.

This entire term we will be holding educational seminar on varied relevant topics. This include Anti Money Laundering; Forex and Treasury management; small scale private equity investment risks; Fraud prevention and Information Technology.

Soft skills like emotional intelligence communication skills along with many outdoor sport activities for the BCICAI members and their families, including a CA family day, which is one of the much sought after programmes by the children of the members, will be organised.

How do you view the accounting standards in Bahrain? Is there any change required?

Bahrain has adopted International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and as of today, almost all of the premium accounting bodies of

the world are in the process of converging with IFRS to form a uniformly applicable norm across the globe. IFRS is a principle based accounting standard, which allows the users to comply or explain the rationale of deviation because it is a fact that one size fits all approach cannot be taken in the field like accounting.

Lots of search and research goes into the evolution process of the IFRS with a common goal to optimise the reporting of the financial health of a company to the True and Fair view. Change is constant and the standards undergo changes after every few years to adapt the emerging trends and issues.

What do you think of the current status of the Bahrain economy? What new trends are being observed? As CAs have a

ringside view of the busi-ness, what could be done better in the Kingdom?

If you observe in the recent years the general growth rate of Bahrain economy has been four to five per cent, which is a real good rate comparing to the global economic conditions. It is commendable when Bahrain is holding good ground on economy front. However, sustained reduction in oil price is certainly a big factor, which would affect the available resources of the country.

To suggest what can be done better, I may not have complete information on all the initiatives taken by the authorities. But to relate my response to our theme, I would request for stricter implementation of the governance rules and legal provisions so that it gradually becomes a habit of all to respect the good norms of resident or citizen.

Prison guard faces bribery chargesDT News NetworkManama

A prison guard appeared in the dock before the High

Criminal Court yesterday facing charges of accepting bribe. He reportedly facilitated the entry of a phone as well as nuts and Viagra pills to an inmate in Jaw Prison.

His illicit act came to light following a tip-off to the police. It was found out that he had received an iPhone 6, two Samsung phones and BD2370 from the inmate’s brother in exchange of smuggling aforementioned items to him inside the jail.

According to court files, the prison guard, of Asian origin, was convinced by the inmate that he could bring his family to Bahrain and promised him to give him a house and a car if he smuggled the items to him.

The inmate and his brother are also standing trial in this case, after being charged of abetting the crime. The brother denied knowing anything about the inmate’s plans to smuggle the items inside the jail with the help of the cop.

You’ve got to try it to believe it !!! From time to time you see cellulite tablets,

creams and various treatments being advertised with miraculous results, but @ JOZ SALON & SPA we started this treatment is a pleasant change. Why you may ask? Benefits can be seen after the first treatment.

The G5 massager is a massaging piece of equipment with the ability to be used in a variety of applications. Including stimulating the lymphatic system, which helps alleviate

problems like puffiness, fluid congestion and swollen conditions.

Our Slimming Expert says “G5 massage assists with the appearance of lumpy and congestied skin; after a G5 session your skin texture and appearance will be much smoother.

G5 works best in conjuction with our additions; including inch loss body wraps, steam and thermodome.

The G5 works on breaking down fatty deposits, cellulite and dispersing this with excess fluid through the lymphatic areas. This process allows an instant inch loss and a detox effect, as well as improvement in skin elasticity, collagen flow and blood circulation.

We @ joz salon & spa use our own “secret methods” so to speak - which is a combination of slimming and draining cream, celluite oil containing essential oils and a medium-high thermal gel. This is used in all our G5 treatments. These help to provide toning and firming of the skin, a reduction in cellulite and fatty tissues all

resulting in temporary but measurable reduction in body measurements making those “too tight” clothes more comfortable.

We recommend a package of 6-1o G5 body treatments over a 3 to 4 week period to achieve your optium results.

A wonderful improvement in cellulite and texture of skin and elasticity and detox result will be felt and seen with instant inch loss!

OuR TReATMenTsInch loss body wraps

These body wraps are designed to work in conjunction with the G5 Massage system and Body Shape products. This process allows an instant inch loss, as well as improvement in skin elasticity and blood circulation.

The treatment incorporates a target specific G5 either to the front or back of your body followed by a thermo pack to out any unwanted toxins and fluid congestion.

Cellulite BusterWhat better way to expell toxins and burn

calories than to sweat it out under our steam room; After you receive your all over G5 massage we then give you steam and you drift off into relaxation whilst you burn calories and melt body fat.

Detox and G5 Treatment

This detox treatment begins with an all over G5 massage targeting your specific trouble areas. The therma wrap is then pulled over you covering your neck to toe for 20-30mins. This releases toxins, stimulates cellulite reduction and improves collagen and skin elasticity. As your body gently heats up your body fat starts to melt.

Established in 1970, Bill Blass led the way for American designer brands. Today,

the brand is poised to re-enter the market with a thoroughly modern strategy, catering exclusively to eCommerce customers worldwide. The launch collection, designed under Creative Director Chris Benz, includes women’s ready-to-wear, handbags, accessories and shoes, shipping to over 65 countries beginning November 2nd.

The pure-play eCommerce strategy was born from a desire to service consumers in the most responsive and contemporary way. “We are advancing the brand in a way that is digital for today and tomorrow while honouring the brand’s philosophical origin and illustrious past,” says Bill Blass President & COO, Stuart Goldblatt.

Breathing new life into the Bill Blass brand is Chris Benz, a young designer with an eponymous line already under his belt, who will use his social media savvy – he has over 200,000 followers – to engage with customers. “Bill Blass used the most relevant methods [at the time] to reach his customer directly and we will continue that ethos, creating a new, modern dialogue.” Benz is supported in these communications by an in-house digital marketing team.

Today, the Bill Blass team is honouring the brand more rigorously than the brand has been since Mr. Blass’ reign. Benz is mindful however of catering to the modern woman, noting, “looking to the future, one must respect the past and forge ahead leveraging the design history as a language rather than a blueprint.”

Rounding out the executive team is Business Director Kelly DeMeester, who joined the team following years of experience in the finance industry. DeMeester notes, “There is a ubiquitous disclaimer in investment reporting, ‘Past performance does not guarantee future results.’ To some degree this is also true for fashion.” Underpinning her strategic business approach, DeMeester believes, “applying technology and tapping into consumer behaviour to enhance the user experience will foster deeper, more personal engagement.”

The brand will be supported by a strong technology platform and will launch with a custom-built eCommerce website–www.billblass.com. Bill Blass is able to change the site’s content and merchandise in-house, managing a continuous flow of new product. The focus, rather than tied to traditional seasonal delivery schedules, is

to present an ongoing stream of product for global distribution. To enhance the company’s agility, Bill Blass has created a state-of-the-art, in-house digital studio where new product can seamlessly go from photography to online availability in record time.

On the eve of the brand’s launch, Goldblatt sums up the spirit of the new team: “Everyone at Bill Blass is passionate about infusing vitality into one of the greatest fashion brands in history. We are committed to investing in our future and creating the foundation for a vibrant global brand, led through eCommerce.”

Aussie vlogger Ruby Golani is fast

becoming a face to know. Already gaining nearly 300,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel, and with over 30,000 followers on Instagram, she’s just landed her first big beauty brand break as the beauty expert for Pantene’s new Fit To Shine campaign, alongside bombshell Laura Dundovic.

A quick scroll of her Instagram page will show you her incredible beauty strengths: brows on fleek and some seriously slick winged liner looks. This girl has got some beauty tricks worth getting to know. Read on to see what gives her confidence, the secret to making her own natural body scrub and to find out what beauty really means to her.

What do you think the link is between inner and outer beauty?

“Health is beauty from the inside out. When I feel fit and strong internally, I have unbelievable confidence and I feel beautiful.”

How do you care for your skin and hair internally?

“I try and eat more organically and drinking two litres of water every day without fail. I also love drinking smoothies especially in Summer. I use pea protein, chia seeds, spirulina, oats and fruit to create the yummiest smoothie ever!”

What are your top five essentials for healthy skin and hair?

1. I use a facial brush to exfoliate my skin as I find this deeply removes all dirt and makeup.

2. I drink two litres of water every day.3. A weekly treatment like Pantene’s Daily

Moisture Renewal Intensive Hair Masque ($10.99). I’m always heat styling my hair and it

tends to be left feeling frizzy and dry with split ends. I use the masque to repair my hair from the core to reveal stronger, shinier hair.

4. I take supplements to help keep my skin, hair and nails strong.

5. Body scrubs — I like to make my own! Coconut oil, brown sugar and vanilla extract.

What would be your advice for someone wanting to increase their hair shine?

“Having a good quality shampoo and conditioner is conditioner! You don’t need to break the bank in order to have the best products. Some of the best beauty products out there have a reasonable price tag.”

What things, other than products, are important in your beauty routine?

“Sleep!”

What three words sum up the idea of beauty to you?

“Kind, strong and confident.”www.popsugar.com.au

Whatever emotional stability you gathered in the four years since Adele

To begin what will no doubt be an elaborate press tour, it has just been announced Adele will make her musical return to Saturday Night Live just one day after the release of her album 25. She’ll be joined by Academy-Award Winner Matthew McConaughey who will act as the night’s host.

“Do I have to wear parachute pants, slap bracelets?” he joked. “Are we going to have to get jiggy with it?” Of course, a little flattery and flirtation never hurt anyone.

“You look good in parachute pants,” Clinton said; to which Colbert quipped, “I have the hips for it.”

Barrymore, however, received a warm reception from her batch of puppies as they licked the Miss You Already star’s ears and hair.

Sorry guys, but Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are over.

Garfield and Stone were spending some time apart earlier this year, which caused speculation surrounding their status. However, it was learned at the time that it was due to their busy schedules.

many are purists at heart, opting for the Connery classic. What’s left to say about this British institution? It’s all here - suave? Check. Quips? Check. Gadgets? Check. Etc.? Check.

Played By: Tom HanksFilm: Forrest Gump

A true one-off, the genius of Tom Hanks’ Oscar-winning performance was to show that Gump was more than an idiot,

and was instead blessed with a heart so big it made up for deficiencies in other areas.

YOUR STAR TODAY

It may seem as if you are trapped in some sort of power

struggle today that you just can’t get out of. The problem is that this struggle may have very little to do with you and your actions whatsoever. There is a strong limiting force that is asking for a bit of a slow down in one way or another.

ARIES20th March - 20th April

You may find yourself a bit ag-gravated today as people seem

to be more of a hindrance than a help to whatever you are doing. Check yourself before you wreck yourself. In other words, don’t be too accusing of oth-ers until you make sure that you yourself are operating honestly and productively.

LEO 20th July - 20th Aug

You may find yourself run-ning into roadblocks today, but

don’t worry because these things are nothing that you can’t work around. The tricky part of the situation is that none of these blocks are likely to budge, and you may have absolutely no under-standing of why they are put there.

SAGITTARIUS 20th Nov - 20th Dec

You may find that your steady approach to something is be-

ing challenged today. It could be that someone with a strong ego is work-ing to put holes in the plan that you have so carefully laid out. Try to stick with the facts and do your best not to let this turn into some sort of popularity contest.

TAURUS 20th April - 20th May

You have a unique opportu-nity at this time to go back and

review certain plans and foun-dations that you have recently put into place. This is a key time for you to review your plans. If there is any sort of doubt in what you have completed so far, con-sult the expertise of someone you trust.

VIRGO20th Aug - 20th Sept

Your mind is sharp today and your willingness to work is

equally strong. Use this combina-tion of forces to your full advantage. You will find that your brain is like a pow-erful steel trap. The important thing for you to remember is to not let other peo-ple stand in the way of your progress.

CAPRICORN 20th Dec - 20th Jan

Be careful that your self-esteem isn’t so dependent on what oth-

er people tell you. One minute you may be high as a kite. The next min-ute you may feel down in the dirt when someone criticizes you for one reason or another. Do your best to not let others blow you up and then deflate you.

GEMINI 20th May - 20th June

Your inherent laziness is not making it easy to get out of

bed this morning. In fact, all you may want to do today is simply sit around and do absolutely nothing. Unfortunately, this may not be possi-ble. Find the element of fun in every-thing you do - including your work.

LIBRA 20th Sep - 20th Oct

You are apt to rise out of bed with a jolt, which is indicative

of the fact that there are forces prodding you from almost every direc-tion. Do your best to appease those who need your attention. The key for you is not to get overwhelmed to the point where you can no longer function.

AQUARIUS 20th Jan - 20th Feb

Your general ego and self-esteem should feel good at

this time. You will find that you can make great strides in the long-term projects on which you have been work-ing. Today is a good day to really put your nose to the grindstone and get to work on things. Have a nice day!

CANCER 20th June - 20th July

You may find yourself butt-ing heads with someone who

is equally as unwilling to budge from their position as you. Use this conflict as a lesson on perspective, and understand the motivation of the op-posite side. Don’t be afraid to work a little harder than you have been.

SCORPIO 20th Oct - 20th Nov

It is not a good idea to blame your troubles and ailments on

other people. The only one that you really have to blame is yourself. You will find that your mind is quite active today and that it might send you around in circles unless you make a conscious effort to slow it down and get it going on the right path.

What happened to UK USA ethical journalism? On 21st October, 2015, the UK

Guardian published an article that can only be described as slanderous against a member of the sporting community in Bahrain. The article encouraged others like the New York Times to join the bandwagon and throw accusations based on the twisted agenda of human rights organisations against the entire Bahraini royal family. What does the UK’s “revered” newspaper hope to achieve by using abusive derogatory language? This particular article is shocking and it is high time the UK government tackled politicised accusations based on a writer’s warped judgment of a situation half way across the world, thus highlighting their ignorance. What must be embarrassing for the UK public is the fact that Western media outlets are determined to manipulate the masses with drivel. The fact is, Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim has been the President of the Asian

Football Confederation (AFC) since May 2013, following his election by a resounding majority in the AFC Extraordinary Congress. He was elected to the FIFA Executive Committee at the Extraordinary Congress. Under his presidency, AFC initiated firm steps to tackle match fixing and corruption by closely working with the Member Associations and international law enforcement agencies. Shaikh Salman served as Vice President of the Bahrain Football Association, where he became President in 2002. He also served as Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan 2008 and has officiated at numerous major international football tournaments, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2003, the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2005 and the Olympic Games of 2004 and 2008.As a resident of Bahrain, it is disconcerting that British newspapers publish shockingly inaccurate reports

against an entire country. This type of trashy journalism achieves nothing but contempt by the masses that are already sickened and more aware of media falsification than ever before. Media supposedly brings the truth to their readers – an acceptable opinion based on fact – not an echo of fanatical ideology! While some will defend media – let us be reminded that Blair publically “apologized” for the Iraq war. What he forgot to divulge is that he and Bush had planned the invasion a year in advance and misused the media to gain public support.Blair and Bush sold the invasion of Iraq and the illegal execution of Saddam Hussain by using the horrific image of the burning World Trade Centre as the showpiece of their propaganda to begin destruction and sectarian divide in the Middle East. On 29th January 2003, Blair claimed they knew about Saddam’s links to Al Qaeda – but

failed to show evidence. The fact that Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11 did not matter. The fact that the war on Iraq created 740,000 widows, forced 4.5 million from their homes and 1 million dead did not matter. The fact that 90% of the dead were civilians did not matter either. Embedded media even reported that Basra had fallen 17 times before it actually fell. At that time, the media conveniently forgot to tell the public that it was an American army officer who ordered the downing of Saddam’s statue by placing the American flag over Saddam’s head – telling the world “America had taken ownership of Iraq”. The U.S. invasion of Iraq resulted, in the words of Saudi Foreign Minister Saud Al Faisal, in a pro-Iranian Shia government that “handed Iraq to Iran on a silver platter.”And so, the demonizing of Sunni Arabs continues…….

Dear Sir

As the winter is around the

corner, a cold has been trailing behind and if you catch it, you need a nutrient that can fix it fast. There’s no sorrow as we’ve got one. It’s a kiwi fruit ! It is also in a vitamin C group.Research published recently in the British Journal of Nutrition proved that it can reduce the duration and severity of upper respiratory tract infection.Vitamin C also plays a role in fighting colds. It includes, citrus fruits, kiwi fruits , red pepper, broccoli,Brussels sprouts, butternut squash ,papaya, sweet potato and tomatoes. The key to preventing colds and recovering from them quickly is to maintain a strong immune system which includes a balanced diet, avoiding sugar, having a standard level of vitamin D in our system, getting enough sleep and exercise, managing our stress and, practising a good hand washing technique.Zinc is also one of the best supplements to help fight colds. Foods that contain zinc are sea food( cooked oysters) , beef, lamb, chicken, wheat germ, spinach ,pumpkin and squash seeds, cashews, cocoa powder, cooked mung beans, and mushroooms. We have been eating at least two or more items of these everyday!Chicken soup is also a valid cold remedy.

We shouldn’t neglect our grandma’s cure, a home- made bone broth which is excellent for speeding healing and recuperation from illness. We heard an old adage that chicken soup will help cure a cold and there’s a scientific support for such a treatment. It can thin the mucus in our lungs and make it less sticky to expel it out easily.Vitamin D also plays a role in a cold but not in a positive nature. Its deficiency increases the risk of catching cold. We are able to compensate it by eating mushrooms, especially portabella and Shiitake that contribute a good benefit. and maintain a required standard level.Let’s eat kiwi fruits, the foods that contain vitamin C, vitamin D , Zinc, chicken soup for the winter and fight the seasonal cold. Good health to everybody!

The Real Estate Regulatory Authority is badly needed

in Bahrain to help the Real Estate Management Companies from being abused and misused by some of the owners who refuse to settle their management fee despite enjoying the common facilities being provided by the Developers and yet the Management Company and the Home Owners’ Association (HOA) are helpless. These Psychotic Patriotic Owners abuse the HOA Members as well as the Management Companies and other owners’ openly and always creating issues and threatening people in the premises without any fear and yet there is no Legal or Regulatory Authority to restrict or control them.

Leasing:The other major concern in the Real Estate sector in the Kingdom is that there are thousands of freelancers leasing and managing buildings without license or registration or permission thus desturbing the professional Real Estate culture and distroying the professional work ethics and companies

who invest and play a vital role in the economy of the Kingdom of Bahrain. There must be a license for all Real Estate practioners to stop freelancers from dealing privately thus affecting the business of the professional registered and licensed Real Estate companies and investors.

Rental:There are many instances where a tenant is not willing to pay the rent to the landlord and yet the Landlord is unable to evacuate the tenant and by the time the judgment is issued by the Urgent Matters Court in the Kingdom of Bahrain (usually 2 years), the tenant has either enjoyed residing in the premises or fled the country. Is there a solution to differentiate the relationship between companies leasing and managing properties and residential buildings, as well as regulating the work of real estate brokers and owners associations and freelancers? Why is it always a lose-lose situation for the landlord?

BSB Year 7D science class students have been studying and learning all about Green Living and the environment during their science lessons. As part of their assessment for this topic all students were asked to research, design, create and build a model of an ECO friendly house. Above, the students with the models prepared by them.

Bahrain Polytechnic hosted a seminar at the campus on “Why

Businesses Fail: Understanding the Ingredients for Crafting and Fine-tuning Strategy”, delivered by Dr. Constantine “Dino” Kiritsis on behalf of ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

The two hour seminar, held for students in the Business School, comprised of an inspirational and interactive discussion on how big companies find it difficult to sustain their business.

Additionally, he spoke about how he favours entrepreneurs and encourages the students to take risks when starting their own business.

Bahrain Polytechnic’s Programme Manager of Accounting, Namasiku Liandu, who awarded the guest lecturer at the end, stated: “It is great for our business students to have this opportunity of learning the critical business success factors from a real entrepreneur and seasoned international trainer and speaker; we are privileged to have Dr ‘Dino’ with

us today.”Acting CEO Dr. Mohamed

Al Aseeri commented: “Inviting experienced guest speakers is a great way to share real life business

problems, eventually leading to a discussion on how to overcome them. This will train the students to avoid mistakes throughout their career journey.

“Dr. Kiritsis speaks about entrepreneurship during his lecture, which is what the Polytechnic encourages its students to practice.

“I’d like to thank Dr. Kiritsis and

ACCA for their time and support, and would like to thank the staff involved in organizing this event, as we strive to meet the government action plan 2015-2018 and the Bahrain 2030 Vision.” concluded Dr. Al Aseeri.

Dr. Constantine Kiritsis is an entrepreneur & consultant operating mainly in the educational industry as a business developer, curriculum developer and professional/academic trainer. Through his company, StudySmart, he has been able to partner with major international organizations (PwC, ICAP, SHRM) in order to offer value in the educational and consulting industries.

Bahrain Polytechnic’s Registry Director Ahmed

Malalla urged the Polytechnic graduates to attend the photography session for the purpose of the graduation booklet; as the Polytechnic prepares its graduation c e r e m o n y scheduled to be on 26th November 2015.

He added that the photography session for the participating graduates began on Sunday, 18th October and ends on Thursday, 29th October 2015. With the deadline coming to a close, graduates must make their way to Building 24 (Student Council headquarters) at the Polytechnic campus in Isa Town from 4 PM – 8 PM in order to get their photo taken.

Graduates are required to dress formally for the photography session. Males would have to wear either white thobe, ghutra and agal, or a formal suit with a white shirt and a tie. Females would have to wear either a black

their personal data and confirm their attendance to the graduation ceremony.

The second graduation ceremony of Bahrain Polytechnic will be held under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, taking place on 26th November 2015 at the Sh. Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Hall at the University of Bahrain campus in Sakhir.

The Wonders is set some time in the recent past in the

long, stretching golden days of summer. Wolfgang (Sam Louwyck) and his wife Angelica (Alba Rohrwacher) live in a ramshackle stone farmhouse in the Italian countryside with Coco, a close friend, and their four young daughters. They may be under the southern Tuscan sun but their daily routine is far from languid.Wolfgang is a tenant farmer and apiarist, and it makes sense that one whose survival is governed by the life (and sometimes

death) of bees should be something of a doomsday prophet, mistrustful of so-called progress. He keeps his family at a safe distance from the modern world. Many duties fall to the eldest Gelsomina (Maria Alexandra Lungu), a gawky young teen, who manages the clan as they all toil from dawn until after dusk with the two youngest in tow (who loudly fritter away the days playing, a constant reminder that choosing this way of life means most leisure ends when childhood does).

Director Alice Rohrwacher, who won the Grand Prix at Cannes, shares a certain naturalness of style (and set of interests) with the Dardenne brothers, about the contemporary life and topical issues of the working class. Here, the social commentary is subtle but touches on disappearing craft production and the rise of consumerism, and the modern world’s increasingly tenuous connection to the land, as well as the volatile gruff, tough and tender dynamics of this close-knit family.

East Star Gp to launch ME Ops from Bahrain

Bahraini delegation participates in a global panel discussion

If you really have a mission of connecting every person in the world you can’t do that without connecting people in India

-Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO

DT News NetworkManama

The Bahrain Economic Development Board

(EDB) has announced that China’s East Star Group will be launching its Middle East operations from Bahrain. The announcement comes on the back of the EDB’s efforts to attract the Group to the kingdom, and is in line with the EDB’s strategy to attract more investments to Bahrain, strengthening the national economy and creating quality jobs for local citizens.

Logistics, food and textiles manufacturing are part of a wide range of products and services that East Star Group provides. The Chinese group is among the largest tenants in the “Dragon City” project and is in the process of creating and constructing storage facilities with a capacity of 18,000

square meters at a cost of USD10 million. The project is expected to lead to the creation of 100 jobs.

The agreement was announced at Beijing, the capital of the People’s Republic of China, where a delegation from the Bahrain EDB took part in the global discussion panel “Ways to Strengthen International Cooperation in Terms of Production, Capacity and Manufacturing Equipment” at the 7th China Overseas Investment Fair, held on October 22 and 23.

During the panel session, the EDB sought to promote Bahrain’s rapidly growing manufacturing sector and the investment opportunities it offers. The EDB also met with Chinese and other international investors with the aim of strengthening the investment cooperation

between both sides, and highlighting Bahrain’s position as an ideal gateway for Chinese investors who are seeking to gain access to the GCC market.

Chief Executive of the Bahrain EDB, Khalid Al Rumaihi, commented, “Through participating in

official visits and organising roadshows, the Economic Development Board has worked hard to attract a wide range of investments from around the globe, and to support their plans to operate out of the Kingdom. The board’s efforts have contributed

to highlighting Bahrain’s competitive advantages as well as its strategic location for businesses seeking to make Bahrain its Middle East operations home.”

General Manager of the East Star Group Zhang Zhengbo said, “Bahrain offers an ideal platform from where we can access the high-value Arabian Gulf market, and we are looking forward to establishing our headquarters in the Kingdom and benefiting from the number of competitive advantages Bahrain offers, including its open business environment, highly competitive operational costs, and a skilled and bilingual national workforce.

“We are grateful for the support of the Bahrain EDB who helped us carry out our plans for expansion into the region,” he added.

Spain’s National Court said it has opened a preliminary

investigation into German carmaker Volkswagen for possible fraud over the pollution-cheating software installed in some of its diesel engines.

The case was opened

following a request from public prosecutors who argued Volkswagen may have committed fraud, violated consumer protection laws and committed crimes against the environment due to pollution from its cars.

The court ordered the company to present a judge

with “all official statements over this affair”, as well as a list of all the cars that are affected by the scandal and all information regarding the installation of the software to rig diesel emissions tests in Spain.

Volkswagen sparked global outrage last month when it

admitted that 11 million of its diesel cars worldwide were equipped with so-called defeat devices that activate pollution controls during emission tests but turn them off when the car is on the road.

The company earlier on Wednesday posted its first quarterly net loss in 15 years

in the third quarter because of the scandal and warned it would hurt earnings for the whole of 2015.

Volkswagen is already facing criminal investigations and regulatory probes over the affair in several other nations, including France, Germany, Italy and the

United States. The company has already said it will set aside 6.5 billion euros in provisions in the third quarter but the company’s new chief executive Matthias Mueller has acknowledged this was just the start as it only covers the estimated cost of fixing the vehicles.

Hamad Al Humaidhi, AUB Chairman, commented: “AUB continued its robust performance in the first nine months of 2015 even as regional economic activity moderates and international markets continue to be uncertain and volatile. AUB’s sustained growth reflected in the YTD Q3/2015 result is a testament to AUB’s well-managed business model based on diversification and cross border flows and

of the success of its selective growth initiatives to increase operating income and mitigate risk challenges in its target markets.”

“Despite expected upcoming challenges from an unstable global economy and its effect on AUB’s target markets, AUB continues to remain confident of its resilience and ability to maintain its performance given its strong fundamentals and prudent, proactive management of risks and costs. It will continue to seek, identify and tap organic as well as inorganic growth opportunities within an acceptable risk‐return framework, ” added Al Humaidhi.

Briton facing flogging in Saudi to be freedLondon

Britain’s Karl Andree, who was facing the threat of

flogging in Saudi Arabia for being caught with home-made wine, is to be released from custody, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said yesterday.

“Delighted to announce Brit Karl Andree will be released from Saudi custody within a week and reunited with his family,” Hammond wrote on Twitter after meeting King

Salman on a visit to Saudi Arabia.

Prime Minister David Cameron added on Twitter that the news was “good to

hear”. The family of Andree, 74, said he had been told he faced 350 lashes in public after serving a year behind bars for being caught with home-made wine.

Production and consumption of alcohol are banned in Saudi Arabia.

Cameron wrote to the Saudi government about Andree’s case earlier this month and his spokeswoman had called the case “extremely concerning”. Andree’s son Simon said he feared the grandfather of seven

would not survive a flogging. Andree worked in Saudi Arabia’s oil industry for 25 years.

Saudi Arabia is Britain’s most important trade partner in the Middle East and was its biggest market for arms exports last year.

Meanwhile, King Salman and Hammond also reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries, ways of enhancing them and the latest developments at regional and international arenas.

Discovery of oxygen on comet ‘big surprise’Paris

Stunned scientists announced yesterday the

unexpected discovery of large quantities of oxygen on a comet, which streaked past the Sun in August with a European spacecraft in tow.

The find came as a “big surprise”, and challenges mainstream theories on the formation of our Solar System, said scientist Andre Bieler of the University of Michigan.

Measurements made by the Rosetta probe suggested that oxygen molecules in the 67P comet’s gassy halo must have existed “before or at” its formation, he said.

This may have implications

for mankind’s understanding of the chemistry involved in the formation of the Solar System some 4.6 billion years ago.

“We believe this oxygen is primordial, which means it is older than our Solar System,” said Bieler.

Scientists had previously ruled out the presence of oxygen (O2) on comets such as 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, the subject of intensive prodding and probing by a European robot lab.

As O2 mixes easily with other elements, “we never thought that oxygen could ‘survive’ for billions of years” in a pristine state, said Kathrin Altwegg of the University of Bern, who

co-authored a study in the journal Nature.

“This evidence of oxygen as an ancient substance will likely discredit some theoretical models of the formation of our Solar System,” she said.

The comet is being tracked on its deep space journey around the Sun by the European Space Agency’s Rosetta spacecraft.

The historic mission seeks to unlock the mystery of the origins of life on Earth.

Scientists believe that comets “seeded” early Earth with some of the ingredients for life. The team monitored the ratio of oxygen to water on the comet for several months to see if the

gas molecules would dissipate as solar winds ripped away layers of surface. They did

not -- proving the oxygen was embedded in the comet, not just hanging around its surface.

Mueller double sees Bayern Munich down WolfsburgBerlin

Bayern Munich eased into the third round of the German

Cup on Tuesday with a 3-1 win at holders VfL Wolfsburg as Germany forward Thomas Mueller scored twice.

It was 5-1 when the teams last met four weeks ago after Robert Lewandowski scored all five goals in just nine second half minutes of the Bundesliga rout, but Mueller was Wolfsburg’s primary tormentor on this occasion.

Bayerngave last season’s German league runners-up a first-half masterclass in attacking football in the second-round clash as Brazil winger Douglas Costa opened the scoring with a thunderbolt from outside the area on 15 minutes.

Then Mueller took full advantage of two superb crosses from left-back David Alaba on 20 and 34 minutes to make it 3-0 at the break.

The game’s tempo dropped in the second half, but Wolfsburg

had the last word when midfielder Maximilian Arnold found Andre Schuerrle in space.

The Germany winger fired his shot past Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer on 90 minutes, but it was no more than a consolation goal.

Bayern are peerless in Germany: seven points clear in the Bundesliga in their attempt to win a fourth straight title and they are the team to beat in the cup.

“There’s no need to say much

about the first half,” grumbled Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking.

“You can’t afford to play like that and if Bayern had scored a couple more goals we would have had no cause for complaint.”

Earlier, two Bundesliga teams suffered embarrassing defeats as Eintracht Frankfurt were humbled 1-0 by third division Erzgebirge Aue and ten-man Mainz crashed out as second division 1860 Munich scored late goals to claim a 2-1 win.

Ferrer withdraws from Valencia Open

Stoke add to Mourinho’s woe, Arsenal stunned

Valencia

Top seed and three-time champion David Ferrer

withdrew from the Valencia Open yesterday due to an elbow injury.

Ferrer, who claimed his fifth title of the year in Vienna on Sunday to edge closer to sealing his place at the World Tour Finals next month, was due to begin his campaign against German qualifier Daniel Brands today.

The Spaniard will be assured of his place in London as long as Richard Gasquet doesn’t win the Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel this week and the Paris Masters next week.

Ferrer’s withdrawal means Frenchman Benoit Paire is the only seed left in the top half

of the draw after Australian third seed Bernard Tomic was beaten 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas.

Tomic was a set and a break up early in the second set before the world number 33 fought back and just one break of serve was enough in the decider to set up a quarter-final meeting with Portugal’s Joao Sousa or Paire.

Britain’s Aljaz Bedene is

also out after losing 6-3, 6-4 to Canadian Vasek Pospisil.

American Steve Johnson, the runner-up to Ferrer in Vienna at the weekend, will face second seed Feliciano Lopez in the second round after defeating Slovakia’s Martin Klizan 6-3, 6-4.

Roberto Bautista Agut edged an all-Spanish affair against Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (7/1), 4-6, 6-4.

Eden Hazard squandered the decisive penalty as

Stoke City exacerbated Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s misery with victory in the League Cup on Tuesday, while second-tier Sheffield Wednesday stunned Arsenal 3-0.

After Jon Walters put Stoke ahead with a fine 20-yard shot at the Britannia Stadium, Chelsea substitute Loic Remy, on for the injured Diego Costa, lashed home an injury-time equaliser to make the score 1-1.

Following a goalless period of extra time, the first nine penalties of the shootout were all scored, only for the out-of-form Hazard to see his 10th spot-kick parried by Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland, condemning Chelsea to a ninth defeat of the season and sending the holders out.

Defending his team’s performance, Mourinho said: “What the players did tonight is face some people that write and speak, and said: ‘You are stupid’.

“What some people write and say is really bad for the players. Maybe they think my players are like them when they were players. My players don’t do that. They tried everything.”

Chelsea’s exit came hot on the heels of a 2-1 defeat at West Ham United on Saturday, which left Mourinho facing a Football Association misconduct charge after being sent to the stands, and ramped up the pressure on the Portuguese

ahead of Saturday’s Premier League visit of Liverpool.

With Chelsea currently 15th in the league table and third in their Champions League group, British newspapers have speculated that Mourinho could be sacked if their fortunes do not improve quickly.

Matters began to conspire against Chelsea in the 33rd minute when Costa went off nursing a rib injury following an earlier collision

with Butland. Mourinho later revealed he had gone to hospital.

Walters broke the deadlock in style in the 52nd minute, gathering a pass from Glenn Whelan on the edge of the box, swivelling and crashing a shot in off the crossbar.

In reply, Kurt Zouma struck a post for Chelsea before Remy levelled matters in stoppage time, crashing a shot into the roof of the net after Zouma flicked on Willian’s corner.

Elsewhere, second-tier Hull City defeated in-form Premier League side Leicester City 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, while Everton also needed penalties to beat Norwich City, 4-3, following another 1-1 draw.

Muguruza tops Kerber Singapore

Spanish sensation Garbine Muguruza dominated

Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-4 yesterday to put one foot in the WTA Finals last four on her debut in the season-ending tournament.

The 22-year-old, who rose to world number three on Monday, aggressively attacked from the net and dictated play for most of the match against her more experienced opponent.

Super-confident Muguruza, with just two titles to her name, said she was already eyeing a spot in the Singapore final after beating Lucie Safarova and now Germany’s Kerber to stand on the brink of the semis.

“Every time I step on the court against Angelique I know it’s going to be a very tough match –- we played an unbelievable match today,” Muguruza said.

“I’m really motivated to

be here. It’s my first time in Singapore singles so I really want to come here and win all the matches I can and hopefully be in the final,” she added.

Left-handed Kerber, 27, was broken four times by the tall but quick Spaniard, who won in Beijing this month and was runner-up to Serena Williams at Wimbledon in July.

Muguruza, who is also playing in the doubles, tops

White Group but she is not into the semis yet and still needs to play Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic on Friday.

The top two in each round-robin group will reach the semi-finals. The event features the top eight women’s players apart from world number one Williams, who opted to rest.

Ear l i e r two- t ime Wimbledon champion Kvitova kept her hopes alive and pushed Safarova to the verge of elimination with a 7-5, 7-5 win over her fellow Czech left-hander.

The world number five and 2011 champion has never lost to Safarova, her close friend and Fed Cup partner, holding a 8-0 record across all surfaces.

“I’m really glad that I was able to play and win the kind of match after my loss in the first match here,” said Kvitova, who lost to Kerber in her opening match.
