Floridians triumph inSilver Ribbon PairsGloria and Les Bart of Bradenton FL scored

up their first North American championship as partners with their win in the Leventritt Silver Ribbon Pairs.

The winners stood first in the field after the two qualifying rounds. Their final score of 2967.92 was 25 matchpoints ahead of second-place pair Rob Crawford of Henderson NV and Hadi Allahverdian of Portland OR.

The winners have been married for six years. Les, who is the author of the popular “Bart” convention, won his first NABC – the Life Master Men’s Pairs – in 1972 when he was 25 years old.

This is Gloria’s first championship in the U.S. Originally from Toronto ON, she won six Canadian championships and earned bronze medals in women’s events at the world championships in Perth, Australia, and Venice, Italy.

Ups and downs in the Platinum Pairs

Bridge journalist, teacher and two-time North American champion Karen Walker was assigned to watch an entire session of a pair in the second final session of the NABC+ Platinum Pairs and provide analysis of the deals. Her report follows.

This NABC is the first to offer the Platinum Pairs, the newest and toughest of all national-rated pairs games. The three-day event was open only to Platinum Life Masters, Grand Life Masters and players who had strong records in other national events (those who had won at least 200 lifetime platinum points or at least 50 platinum points over the past three years).

Today’s hostEach day, a different group of units will host

the NABC. The host for today is Area 5 and their representative is John Weatherwax. The unit in Area 6 is:

Central Oregon Coast Unit 572The Central Oregon Coast unit is one of the

longest units in the ACBL. It stretches down the Oregon coastline for 170 miles from Lincoln City to Bandon. They have a membership of 138.

The unit prides itself on its a very active teaching programs, as well as games for beginning bridge players in the Newport OR area. They also have an ongoing e-mail forum for their unit club directors where questions regarding rulings and other director matters can be discussed.

A total of 13 games a week, played in 10 different clubs in seven different cities, can be played on the central Oregon coast. For game times and the cities, you can visit their website: www.Unit572.org. They also host one sectional a year in Newport OR at the end of October.

Seaside Unit 491The Seaside Unit is located on the beautiful

northern Oregon coast and the Long Beach Peninsula in Washington. With clubs in Seaside, Astoria and Ilwaco where everyone is always welcome to come and play!

Unit 291 has a membership of 108 with five games a week. In Ilwaco the game is on Monday, Astoria hosts an afternoon game on Thursday.

Seaside has three different bridge clubs with all clubs playing at the same site, the Seaside Community Center. Wednesday and Friday they have open bridge games and on Saturday they have a limited game.

The Oregon Coast Regional at the beginning of October in Seaside is becoming a hot spot for all bridge players. Seaside has been the Northwest’s most popular ocean resort for over a century and is only 90 minutes from Portland OR. It is a destination paradise for a wide variety of reasons: its spectacular ocean views, miles of public beaches, unique natural setting, mild ocean climate, outdoor activities, year-round events, excellent shopping, and unforgettable dining.

The unit also hosts one of the biggest sectional tournaments in District 20 during the month of April. They provide their members with several functions throughout the year from an annual dinner at the Astoria Seafood Center to a Christmas party at the Country Club, and the unit also subsidizes all special games. See www.seasidebridge.org for all unit information.

Tillamook Unit 493Tillamook OR is located on the Northern

Oregon Coast tucked between the Coastal Range Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The City of Tillamook is the gateway to the area where some of the most beautiful beaches on the Oregon Coast are located.

The unit is very small with only 25 members, but it has updated to the Bridgemate scoring

system. Games are held at the Elks Club on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Double…double By Lynn Berg

Like many other calls in bridge, double can have a variety of meanings, depending on the circumstances. There are so many common uses for this versatile call that it has its own box on the back of the convention card.

The most common types of doubles require no Alert. The oldest of these is the takeout double, usually a low-level double of the opener’s bid to ask partner to bid. For example, 1♠ - Dbl. Classically, this double promises an opening hand, shortness in spades and support for unbid suits. Some players double whenever they have an opening hand. This so-called “off-shape” double does not require an Alert, but there is a box on the convention card you should tick that indicates you and your partner agree to make takeout doubles with minimum values but without adequate support for unbid suits.

By the way, I do not recommend off-shape doubles unless the doubler has a hand worth 17 or more high-card points with a good suit. If you do play off-shape doubles with weaker hands, mark the appropriate box. Here’s another takeout double situation: 1♦ - Pass – 1♠ - Dbl. This double promises support for clubs and hearts.

The negative double is now a staple of most partnership agreements. Here’s an example: 1♣ - 1♠ - Dbl. This convenient bid usually shows four hearts or a long suit without the values to bid at the two level directly. A free bid of 2♥, for example, would promise five. The negative double traditionally promises both unbid suits, but it can also be used with support for opener’s minor or with stoppers in the suit overcalled so

that the doubler can bid notrump if the hoped-for major suit fit is not found.

It is important for partnerships to decide how high to play negative doubles. In other words, at what point does the double become for penalty? Many pairs use a cutoff of 2♠ or 3♠.

What if the opening bid is 4♠? Is a double by the next player primarily for takeout, or is it penalty oriented? Many players have the agreement that 4NT is for takeout over 4♠.

Of course, the doubler’s partner can turn any double into a penalty double just by passing. For example, in the auction 3♥ - Pass – Pass – Dbl. The doubler should be short in hearts with enough high card values to provide support in case partner has to bid a minor suit at the four level. Suppose, however, that doubler’s partner has this hand:

♠4 ♥K J 8 6 5 ♦A 4 3 ♣ 9 8 6 5.It’s a no-brainer for doubler’s partner to

convert the double to penalty by passing.Neither responsive nor maximal doubles

require an Alert, although they come up much less often than takeout doubles. An easy way to describe a responsive double is that it is a takeout double by the takeout doubler’s partner in an auction where the opening bid has been raised:

1♣ – Dbl – 2♣ - Dbl. You will rarely have a hand with a club stack in an auction such as this, so double indicates the desire to compete with no clear bid.

A maximal double is a game try used when the auction has been jammed by competitive bidding:

1♠ - 2♥ - 2♠ - 3♥. There is no game try bid available to opener, and 3♠ is simply competing.

When opener doubles, it’s a game try. Partner should bid either 3♠ or 4♠.

Support doubles and redoubles do require an Alert. They show three-card support for responder’s major in a competitive auction, such as 1♦ - Pass – 1♥ - 1♠. Opener doubles to show three-card support. A direct raise to 2♥ promises four-card support. In the auction 1♦ - Pass - 1♥ - Dbl, redouble shows three-card support for hearts.

You can use a double in a competitive auction to show support with a high honor, but be sure to discuss this before trying it. It works this way: If you overcall an opening bid and the opener’s partner bids as well, a double by your partner shows a raise of your suit with at least the ace or king. This is very helpful when you have a holding such as five to the A-Q or K-J and you are on lead. You might worry about leading the suit if the opponents win the auction, but not if partner has shown a high honor. This double requires an Alert.

Opening lead: ♣J.Bidding commentary: South’s 6♦ response

to North’s Blackwood query shows one ace and a diamond void. North decides to gamble on a grand knowing that there are only 12 tricks –

seven spades, three clubs and two hearts – but with many chances for 13. If a red suit is led, there are 13 tricks. If South has two hearts and four clubs to go along with seven spades, there are 13 tricks because a club can be ruffed in dummy. If the ♦A ruffs out, there are 13 tricks. If all else fails, there is always a two-way heart finesse. When there are so many chances for an extra trick, go for it!

Lead commentary: It is far too risky to lead the ♦A after South has told the world of a diamond void. The club sequence is a safer choice.

Play commentary: South can do better than take an early heart finesse. After the ♠A and ♠K are cashed, the ♦K is led from dummy. If East has the ace and covers, South has 13 tricks. If East plays low, South ruffs, enters dummy via a club, ruffs a diamond, returns to dummy via a second club and ruffs a third diamond. Happiness! The ♦A drops and there is no need to worry about the heart finesse. And what if the ace hadn’t fallen? Then South would try to work

out from the fall of the cards which opponent figures to have the greater length in hearts – and then play that opponent for the queen. As it happens, that wouldn’t work. West has the greater heart length, but East has the queen. Go figure. In any case, it is important to look for alternative chances before banking on a finesse. Of course, it would have been much easier on everyone’s nerves if North had decided to play in 6♠ or if West had led a heart.

Oops, a lead out of turn. Director Judy Cotterman helps an IN table sort out declarer’s options.

Peter Weichsel, after playing on professional teams for 40 consecutive years, is looking at the possibility of taking on a coaching position for a team interested in reaching the next level.

Weichsel, a five-time world champion, with more than 25 North American titles, was elected to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in 2004 as the only player voted in that year. He is one of the two leading theorists in the U.S., with an emphasis on strong club systems. He doggedly worked to make the W-S Club one of the strongest ever. He devised the Polish American Club, a very complex, semi-natural system combining many of his ideas with elements of the Polish Club. He has also been a strong influence on the Ultimate Club.

He has invented numerous conventions

and treatments, many of which are now commonplace in American bridge – Weichsel over 2NT rebids and transfers over Michaels, just to name a couple.

Weichsel would like to work full-time or even part-time with one or more pairs who want to excel at the highest level. His experience and expertise would be invaluable in accomplishing that goal.

He can be contacted during the Spring NABC at the Grand Sierra Resort or by e-mail: [email protected].

Thousands of stars twinkle above Reno’s mountains. None shine as brightly, though, as the bridge stars who grace Rose Meltzer’s “Breakfast with the Stars.”

This spring’s NABC saw a dazzling array in every way imaginable. A bountiful buffet, beautifully presented, greeted guests as they arrived. The room shone too, sparkly with festive balloons and gold stars.

Rose and Jim “Flash” Gordon helped people find their seats with this year’s super stars: JoAnna and Lew Stansby, Tobi Sokolow and Marc Jacobus, Jan Martel and Ron Smith, Renee Mancuso and Mike Passell, Lisa and Dave Berkowitz, Janice Seamon-Molson and Zia, Shannon Cappelletti and Alan Sontag, and, of course, hostess Rose Meltzer with partner Kyle Larsen.

Dave Berkowitz, newly elected to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame, ably emceed the morning. Moving throughout the tables, Dave introduced the stars. Vignettes and jokes kept smiles on all faces.

As guests and stars enjoyed the feast, they learned all sorts of tidbits from the affable and talented stars. Passell is about to become a grandfather (congratulations, Mike!), Sokolow didn’t begin playing tournament bridge until she was past 30.

Many of us are only able to admire the skills of these talented players for a board or two at the bridge table. “Breakfast with the Stars” is a fabulous opportunity to learn bridge tips, hear bridge tales and simply get to know more about these elite players.

Thanks to the vibrant and amazing star who makes it all happen: Rose Meltzer!

to add new members to the Sedona club. “It was a total effort,” she said.

Outlining the program she used to get the bridge club going, Helton said the key points were:

1. Commitment. The players need to know that the teachers will be around.

2. Personal attention. Learn the names of the students and give special help to those who need it.

3. Enthusiasm and humor. Don’t let the students become bored.

4. Teaching material. Helton used the Audrey Grant books and techniques.

5. A chance at success. “Even small successes are important,” she said.

Helton said half of the people who took lessons at the club were brand new to bridge. “They are not top players and they never will be,” Helton said. “Bridge for them is a social outlet.”

Jeff Taylor, who represents host District 20 on the ACBL Board of Directors, welcomed all to Reno and acknowledged several Goodwill Committee members from his district.

Later on, he presented certificates of appreciation for outstanding work to Marilyn Vilhauer, player hospitality chair and district tournament manager for many years, and to NABC Chair Kathy Angstadt Hansen.

Mike Passell was asked to introduce another Goodwill Committee member, newly elected ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame member David Berkowitz. Passell said he has been Berkowitz’s teammate many times, “and on top of being a great player,

he’s a great ambassador for the game.”Passell told a story about playing on a

sponsored team with Berkowitz in Hot Springs AR. Playing against two older women, Berkowitz went down in three straight contracts because of bad breaks in key suits. On the fourth, he played 5♣ with his usual skill and brought it home via an endplay. One of Berkowitz’s opponents then offered her congratulations. “I’m so happy you made that one,” she said. “I was afraid if you went down again you would get fired.”

Berkowitz then took the podium and said he is “delighted to be in any group that would have Mike and Aileen as members.” He added: “If you want to hear me speak, come to the banquet,” a reference to the Hall of Fame induction ceremony that will take place at the 2010 Summer NABC in New Orleans.

Near the end of the meeting, Osofsky related a story told to her by Tournament Director Matt

(1) 15-17. (2) Slight break in tempo (BIT).Facts: The contract was 6♦ by North making

six after the lead of a low spade. The director was called when dummy’s hand was exposed and again after the play of the deal was completed. North and East agreed that the BIT was about 6-7 seconds in length.

Director’s Ruling: The BIT demonstrably suggested bidding on, and pass was judged to be a logical alternative. The result was adjusted to 3NT by North making five for a score of North-South plus 460. Laws 16B1(a), 16B1(b) and 12C were cited.

The Appeal: North-South appealed the director’s decision. West was the only player who did not attend the hearing. North admitted to a slight BIT and agreed with East’s statement that the length of the hesitation was six seconds. South said he didn’t notice it. South added that, when the answer to Stayman revealed that North-South had at least an eight-card fit in a minor, bidding both minors seemed to be an appropriate way to try for slam. South said that he decided to bid both minors before he bid 3♦.

The Decision: The hesitation was not protracted, but it was sufficient to make unauthorized information available. Even though South (believably) said he did not notice the hesitation, it was information available to him, and the legal standard is an objective one.

North’s hesitation demonstrably suggested that he was considering raising diamonds because 3♥ and 3♠ would have been easy bids to make (i.e. they would probably not be preceded by a hesitation). The directors polled seven players about what they would do over North’s 3NT bid. Three of the players chose to pass. The committee decided that enough of South’s peer group would pass in that situation to make pass a logical alternative.

The directors ruled 3NT making five. The committee noted that on a spade to the ace, North can easily make six on a double squeeze. On a

spade to the jack, however, the count is not rectified and the squeeze does not operate. The committee decided that West’s play of the jack at trick one was sufficiently likely to justify ruling as the director did and ruled 3NT making five for a score of plus for 460 for North-South and minus 460 for East-West.

The committee decided that the appeal had substantial merit.

APPEAL CASE #2Event: Lebhar IMP PairsSession: First qualifying

Leonard Ernst Board #4 ♠ 7 5 Vul: Both ♥ A K Q 10 6 2 Dlr: West ♦ K Q 3 ♣ A 8 Greg Michaels Jon Wright ♠ 9 8 ♠ 4 ♥ 4 ♥ 9 8 3 ♦ 9 7 6 4 ♦ A 8 5 2 ♣ 10 9 7 5 3 2 ♣ K Q J 6 4 Stephen Hosch ♠ A K Q J 10 6 3 2 ♥ J 7 5 ♦ J 10 ♣ — West North East South Pass 1♥ Pass 1♠ Pass 3♥ Pass 3♠ Pass 4♦ Pass 5♣ Pass 5♥ Pass 5♠ (1) Pass 5NT Pass 6NT All Pass

(1) Agreed break in tempo (BIT) prior to 5♠ bid.

Facts: The contract was 6NT by North, making seven after the lead of the ♣K. North-South scored plus 1470. The director was called immediately after the 5♠ bid and again after the play of the deal was completed. Everyone agreed to the BIT.

Director’s Ruling: Bidding further was demonstrably suggested by the BIT and pass was a logical alternative. Therefore, the result was adjusted to 5♠ by South making six for a score of plus 680 for North-South and minus 680 for East-West. Laws 16B1(a) and 12C were cited.

The Appeal: North-South appealed the director’s ruling. All four players attended the hearing. North-South thought there was no logical alternative to 5NT. They stated that South frequently hesitates due to physical reasons; this may have been one of them. Given his handicaps, he himself cannot tell why he pauses. 5NT promises second-round diamond control. North bid 5♥ because the pair bid first- then second-round controls, so 5♦ would have promised first-round control.

The Decision: Was there an immediate hesitation? Yes, South had substantial extra values. He could not bid past 5♠ because he had no diamond control, but obviously he wanted to bid more.

Did that hesitation suggest bidding 5NT instead of other less-successful alternatives? Of course — North cannot imagine that South was thinking of passing 5♥, so he was thinking of bidding 5♠ or bidding more than 5♠, so the BIT demonstrably suggested bidding instead of passing.

Is pass a logical alternative? The committee argued for an hour about this. No one on the committee would pass. Would some number of North’s peers pass? The directors’ poll found three of five who would. Four of the five committee members were convinced that the prima facie evidence was sufficient to conclude that some would pass. If so, there is no alternative; Law 16 requires that the contract be rolled back to 5♠. Law 12 says that in that case, North-South should receive the score least favorable to them that was at all probable, and East-West should get the most favorable score likely. Because the auction pinpointed a diamond lead, the only possible result was plus 680 for North-South.

Did the appeal have merit? Certainly. It was a close call and one of the committee members remained unconvinced.

Was North’s action so egregious as to assign him a procedural penalty? Definitely not. At least one committee member thought it was automatic to bid on.

Dissenting opinion by John Lusky:1. North-South testified that their cuebidding

style was first-round controls first and that 5♣ showed that. North’s 5♥ bid confirmed this.

2. South’s slam try, despite the absence of a 4♣ or 4♦ cuebid over 3♠, and the absence of a strong jump shift, showed a hand with limited high cards, but great trumps. Thus, South’s sequence (ignoring the BIT) matched his hand, one with great trumps that couldn’t bid slam without a diamond control.

3. North had the diamond control and other undisclosed extras. It was clear for North to bid on after 5♠. Once North bids on, North-South will reach a making slam.

4. If any unauthorized information was passed by the hesitation, it was that South had greater trump length than shown. But slam would have been substantially as good if South had had one or two fewer spades, so this UI was irrelevant to North’s decision.

5. The committee’s decision that pass was a logical alternative was based on the results of the directors’ poll. I do not suggest that the directors were other than diligent in their polling. Polling is an imperfect process, however, as the persons polled do not get to hear all the committee hears about North-South’s bidding style, nor do they get a chance to deliberate about inferences that may be available from North-South’s bidding. That is what the committee is for, and it should not allow itself to be convinced by polling results when the logical alternative analysis as stated above is quite clear.

6. For these reasons, I respectfully dissent from the committee’s ruling that pass was a logical alternative.

7. In addition, I note the evidence that an unmistakable hesitation had occurred that conveyed UI to North was thinner than normal because of

the testimony that South’s medical issues resulted in random hesitations from time to time. While the committee usually does not pay a lot of attention to this type of testimony because it is self-serving, in this case there was reason to believe it.

Koltnow told Osofsky that as he made his way around the room while picking up slips, he thought the atmosphere at Osofsky’s table was different from the others. “He said he noticed an aura of friendliness at my table,” she said.

With a slight pause for effect, Osofsky continued: “I think it was because they all got tops.”

That was a demoralizing start, but good players find ways to bounce back.

On Board 2, Nikolay held♠9 7 6 ♥K J 9 6 5 ♦K 10 8 7 ♣10

and heard this auction: East South West North Nikolay Gavin 1♥ Pass 1♠ 2♣ 2♦ Pass 3♠ Pass 4♠ ?

Nikolay liked his red-suit kings and club shortness, so he made a penalty double. They set the contract only one trick, but plus 100 scored 14.5 on an 18 top; plus 50 would have been 11 matchpoints.Which way are the cards running?

Contenders always want to be in control of their results, and that’s extremely difficult if the opponents are being dealt the better hands. Over the next 24 boards, Nikolay and Gavin defended seven routine game contracts (Boards 4, 5, 9, 12, 14, 20 and 24), none of which could be set legitimately. They scored from 5.5 to 8 matchpoints on most of these boards. The only above-average score was on board 12, where Gavin found a spade lead from ♠8 6 5 3 and held 4♥ to 11 tricks, earning 11.5 matchpoints.

The opponents bid to another game contract on Board 6, but Nikolay and Gavin refused to defend: Dlr: East ♠ J 10 9 Vul: E-W ♥ J ♦ K J 6 4 ♣ A J 7 5 2 ♠ A Q 6 3 ♠ K 5 ♥ K Q 9 8 5 ♥ A 6 4 2 ♦ Q ♦ 9 8 7 ♣ Q 6 4 ♣ K 10 9 3 ♠ 8 7 4 2 ♥ 10 7 3 ♦ A 10 5 3 2 ♣ 8 East South West North Nikolay Gavin Pass Pass 1♥ Dbl 2NT (1) 4♦ 4♥ 5♦ Dbl All Pass

(1) Limit raise.West led the ♥K. East overtook to lead the

♠K, then the ♠5. West cashed the ♠Q and ♠A and exited with his last spade. Nikolay was now at a crossroads – if he could guess the diamond layout, he could ruff with one of dummy’s diamond honors and perhaps hold the contract to down two. If he guessed wrong, bad things could happen. He finally decided that down three would be a reasonable score, so he played it safe by pitching a club on the fourth spade and allowing East to ruff.

In theory, 5♦ was a phantom sacrifice because 4♥ could have been defeated with the unlikely ♣A lead. In practice, the contract made plus 620 or plus 650 at almost every table where it was bid. Minus 500 was good for 13.5 matchpoints.

The opponents also had a slight edge in offensive strength on partscore deals. One was Board 7, where the opponents bid to their optimum spot, but Nikolay and Gavin earned the majority of the matchpoints. Both vulnerable, Nikolay opened 1♥ with♠J ♥K J 5 4 3 2 ♦Q 7 4 ♣A Q 2.

His LHO passed, Gavin responded 1♠ and RHO overcalled 2♣. Most would rebid 2♥ with Nikolay’s hand, but he looked at the spade singleton and those tiny heart spots and chose a conservative pass. It was a wise decision, as his LHO held♠A K 10 4 ♥A Q 10 9 7 ♦10 3 ♣J 6.

Eight pairs went minus 200 with the North-South cards for 3.5 matchpoints. Nikolay and Gavin scored 10 matchpoints for their minus 110 defending 3♣.The luck factor

It takes great skill and experience to win a national event, but anyone who’s won one will readily admit that luck is necessary, too. Your pushy contracts have to make, their pushy contracts have to go down, and the opponents have to make mistakes at your table.

A dose of bad luck hit Nikolay and Gavin on Board 23 when they bid up to 4♠ with ♠K 10 9 6 3 ♥9 5 ♦A Q J 5 ♣K 8 3 2 opposite♠A 8 7 5 ♥6 3 2 ♦K 8 3 2 ♣8 5.

It was cold with any 2-2 spade break or even a 3-1 break with a singleton honor, but it was not to be. One opponent held ♠Q J 2, so the game went down and Nikolay and Gavin scored just 4 matchpoints.

Nikolay did his best to force the opponents into making a mistake on Board 22, but the strategy backfired. His RHO opened 1♠, he passed and LHO responded 2♥. Gavin passed, RHO rebid 3♣ and Nikolay leaped to 4♦ with♠10 9 6 ♥5 ♦10 9 8 6 5 4 2 ♣J 9.

It worked in one respect, as LHO now had to guess what to do with♠5 ♥A K 10 8 7 6 3 2 ♦A J ♣K 10.

She guessed right by jumping to 6♥, and her partner claimed even more of the matchpoints by making a better guess. He held ♠A K Q 8 4 ♥4 ♦K 7 ♣A Q 5 4 and, perhaps in an effort to protect his ♦K 7 from the opening lead, converted 6♥ to 6NT.

Minus 1440 was worth a paltry 4 matchpoints. The most unfortunate result for Nikolay and

Gavin was caused in part by the table setup. All tables in the final had diagonal screens, and the two players on each side of the screen write brief notes or whisper to each other to explain their bids. Nikolay misunderstood declarer’s explanation about his distribution on Board 13, which caused him to discard the wrong suit. That allowed their 3NT to make six, which was a zero.

Good luck finally came in the last round on Board 25: Dlr: North ♠ 9 8 7 3 Vul: E-W ♥ J 5 ♦ Q 5 2 ♣ K Q 10 6 ♠ K Q 5 ♠ J 10 6 4 ♥ A K 6 3 2 ♥ 8 ♦ 10 9 ♦ A K J 7 6 4 ♣ J 8 3 ♣ A 5 ♠ A 2 ♥ Q 10 9 7 4 ♦ 8 3 ♣ 9 7 4 2

North East South West Gavin Nikolay Pass 1♦ 3♥ 3NT 4♥ 4NT All Pass

Blame the vulnerability – and maybe the late hour – for all four players’ decisions. If it hadn’t been the last round of a disappointing session, Nikolay might have passed or settled for a 2♥ overcall, and Gavin probably would have passed 3NT. Their opponents made the final mistake in the auction, though, with the 4NT bid, and Gavin found the ♣Q lead. 4NT went down two when declarer misguessed the diamonds and Nikolay and Gavin had their only uncontested top of the session.

Their good luck continued on the last board, where the opponents missed their 4-4 heart fit and went down in 3NT. That was a next to top (16). The final result

There’s some satisfaction in ending with two good boards, but they were too little, too late. Nikolay and Gavin had a session score of around 45 percent and placed 24th, which was certainly no embarrassment in this field. They were disappointed, but through it all they kept their sense of humor and didn’t blame their kibitzer for bringing them bad luck. Both are good sports who will be champions again on another day.

The InsiderThis is the 53rd annual Spring NABC. The

Insider has not been at all 53, it only feels like it. It is safe to say that all 53 have at least one thing in common. It is the local host committee of volunteers that make the tournament a success. Reno is no exception. Kathy has put together a great team that has all gone out of their way to provide the best for all the players who are here. And, she did it long distance. Marilyn put together a menu of food items and entertainment that is first rate. The wraps last night were fantastic! Jo Anne has kept the books and a bemused look on her face. Karol and Guy have provided wonderful care and feeding of the new players in the Carson Room. Cynthia returned to the scene of her 2004 chairmanship to handle registration – love those bags. Sam is making all the right matches back at the partnership desk. Staci and Donna lined up a complete crew of volunteers to staff all the desks. Ouida is rewarding section-top winners. Hendrik got us on TV and in the papers. And, local girl Sheila took triple duty doing the Restaurant Guide, heading up the info desk and working with ACBL’s caddy queen to be sure the caddy shack was staffed. The Insider salutes you all and offers sincere thanks for all that you have done and are doing.

The Bulletin Boys asked the Insider to keep things a little shorter tonight -— apparently the Insider exceeded his daily quota yesterday. But, an important update on the “key” issues; as the search for the missing key to the Horn Lake Headquarters (referred to henceforth as the HL-HQ) continues, the SC has hired a new personal assistant to coordinate the search. A former Xtreme Sports Bar hostess, she was recruited by the SC just the other night. Her primary functions will be finding the key and unlocking the door. Once the doors are

open, she will be responsible for whatever the SC decides needs to be done. After all, he is the SC! The Insider expects SC and fully half the HL-HQ will be reporting to her before we head off to New Orleans in July.

Speaking of New Orleans, make plans now to come to the Big Easy in July for some bridge, some NOLA style food and entertainment, some humidity and a plain old good time. Watch the online Insider for the start of some extensive elevator training courses. Mark my words, when you arrive in New Orleans it will be easy to see who paid attention during our online class and who thought they knew elevators. The Insider knows New Orleans elevators and these elevators, sir, are no elevators you have ever seen before.

The entry fees for these contests are $20 per player per session.

Players must also be current ACBL members to play in the Bean Red Ribbon Pairs. The entry fee is $17 per player per session.

Regional championships are $16 per player per session for ACBL members, $18 for non-members.

Electronic Device PolicyThe electronic

device policy is revised as follows:

1. For all NABC+ rated events at NABCs: Electronic devices, including but not limited to, phones, cameras, PDAs, and others capable of sending or receiving electronic communication are excluded from the playing areas during any session of play. This does not apply to health-related equipment.

2. For all events at an NABC other than a NABC+ rated event: Except for health-related equipment, or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, cell phones, audible pagers or similar equipment may not be operated or operable in any manner in the playing area during a session of play. Any such equipment must not be visible during the session. Sponsoring organizations of other ACBL-sanctioned events are encouraged to adopt a similar policy.

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. Both cards of a partnership must be identical and include the first and last names of each member of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and

may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

Today’s Bridge Events

Tuesday’s SponsorsSara FasoldtSara Fasoldt was one of the brightest and most

intelligent women we ever knew. When our friend Sara Fasoldt began playing slowly and getting confused at the bridge table we knew something was terribly wrong.

Sara was born and raised in upstate New York. She had a B.A. in English Literature and an M.A. in Psychology from Albert Einstein School of Medicine. Thirty years of public Service for the State of New York culminated in serving under Governor George Pataki as New York State’s Executive Director in the Office of Probation.

Sara moved to Seaside OR in 2005 and her retirement activities included Ambassador for City of Seaside, Planning Board for the City of Seaside, Economic Advisor for the City of Seaside, Partners of The Americas, Elks Club (she was the first woman exalted ruler in New York State), Sweet Adeline’s – (Ladies Chorus), board member for Clatsop Community Action and board member for Waunna Federal Credit Union. Some retirement.

She bought and renovated rental properties, traveled all over the country in her RV (called the “Casa Mobile”) and played bridge with the same passion she brought to everything else in her accomplished life. She earned her gold card just about one year ago.

She was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease, a wasting brain disorder, and within two months, she was gone. Her son left home to care for her and her daughter gave birth to her grandson, Max, just days before she died, aged 63. The family

maintained a wonderful blog so we could all feel in touch with our friend in her final days in Seattle. Dear Sara, we will long remember your bright spirit, your keen intellect, your wonderful sense of humor, and your marvelous Easter parties.

The unit had a fundraiser for this game, and are proud to name the Sara Fasoldt Tuesday - Thursday Side Game Series in her honor.

Lynn BakerLynn is a law professor at the University of

Texas, and frequently serves as a consultant to other attorneys on issues of legal ethics in mass tort settlements. A graduate of Yale Law School and Yale College, she also holds a degree from Oxford University, which she attended as a Marshall Scholar.

A 13-time NABC Champion, Lynn’s work commitments largely limit her tournament play to NABC women’s teams and pairs. Her primary partners have been Karen McCallum, Irina Levitina and Kerri Sanborn. Lynn has one of the most outstanding records of any female player in the ACBL during the past 12 years. Of the 38 NABC Women’s Team events that she has entered since playing in her first 1997, she has won 10 and finished second in three. She has also won two NABC Women’s Pairs titles and one NABC Mixed Board-a-Match Teams.

In the 2001 Women’s Team Trials, Lynn was on the winning squad and went on to finish fifth in the Venice Cup at theWorld Bridge Championships in Paris, France.

In 2009, Lynn’s team again won the Women’s Team Trials and won the silver medal in the Venice Cup competition at the World Bridge

Championships held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.A lifelong athlete, Lynn rowed for the Yale

Varsity Women’s Crew and was selected to one U.S. Olympic and three National Women’s Rowing Team training camps during college. An avid downhill skier and runner, she completed both the Chicago and NYC marathons in fall 2009. She lives in Austin TX with her husband (and Venice Cup team NPC) Sam Dinkin, their 11-year-old daughter, Mahria, and two tropical fish.

Bob Hattrup of RenoBob Hattrup loved to play bridge! Even when

he was working full time, he would often play two sessions a day. We so enjoyed kidding him about his playing. Melvin, his stepson, forgot to tell him one New Year’s Eve that Bob’s wife had gone into labor, and he missed the birth of their son. He was teased about that for a long time.

When Dino Depaoli wanted to sell his bridge club, Bob was first in line, and soon he was running his own club — Bridge 4 Fun. The players enjoyed the atmosphere of friendliness and enthusiasm at his club for almost 19 years. Due to declining health, he gave up the club and became a full time player again. Bob passed away Feb. 24, 2010. He would have been 76 in April.

Lost bookletA plastic-covered, spiral-bound booklet with

convention cards covered with NABC stickers covering 10-15 years was left in the ladies room near the Summit Ballroom. It was promised to a 9-year-old when he plays his first duplicate. There is a $25 reward for the booklet’s return. Contact Bobbi Wiltsek in room 524 or phone 415-290-6509.
