Charlie Modrak M70 300 handicaps
Reporter: Bryan Thomas
While assisting John Harding with his 2XX radio pro-
gram Running on Air in late 1983 Charlie came across a
broadcast item ACTVAC Calendar of Events. This led Char-
lie to begin his long and successful participation in our
monthly running handicap program.
He ran his first on a bush circuit within Stromlo For-
est in October 1984 and now becomes the eighth person to
reach the 300 milestone. Until 2018 almost all had been in
the long course but due to a serious health problem he now
runs in the Frylink Series event. To date Charlie has won
eight medals – three gold, two silver and three bronze. Only
Will Foster has bettered Charlie’s record of winning the
Thomas Series point score trophy on three occasions while
Roger Pilkington, who earned his “200 polo shirt” last
month, is also a triple winner. Charlie’s point score victories
were in 1989, 1996 and 1998 as well as being runner-up
three times and once third.
Charlie is an enthusiastic long distance road and cross
-country runner having completed many good quality 10km
races and half marathons while representing the ACT Cross
Country Club (ACTCCC) now the ACTYMCA Running Club.
He has also completed six ACT Veterans’ Halves with a best
time of 74:19 in 1985. His only marathon as a runner was
the 1981 Canberra Marathon in which he finished in a time
of 2:52.09. But then for the next ten years he was one of the
event’s chief organisers including managing the ‘Runners’
Expo’ that was a special feature on the eve of the marathon.
He continued to assist with organizing the annual marathon
for another decade.
In 1992 the ACTCC honoured Charlie with Life Member-
ship.
Charlie was interested in researching and writing
about running and over the years has produced numerous
articles and special historical / statistical publications on the
subject including - ACT Marathons (published January 1984)
and Twenty Years of the Hobson Summer Series (January
2000) on behalf of the ACTCCC.
At the end of 2012 Charlie analyzed the data from all
our monthly handicaps conducted to that time. He was par-
ticularly interested in the historical trivia of the Top Ten
places in the Thomas Series point score. Charlie published
his research in Vetrunner and on our web site in February
2013. Some of his interesting findings were –
-of the 166 persons who had finished in the Top Ten only
five had won the point score more than once,
-nobody had won back-to-back,
-86% were male,
-M45 was the most prominent age group, W30 was the
youngest while M70 the oldest amongst the Top Ten,
-highest winning point score was 1,163 points and the low-
est 1,036 therefore suggesting annual winners need to score
between 130 and 145 points per month to win the trophy at
the end of the year. Cont. P.4 - Graham 100 handicaps

It’s officially on, the ACT Masters Athletics Club has
committed to hosting the 2021 National Track and Field
Championships. As many of you know, we faced the
decision of hosting the event or offering the opportunity to
another state. It was a close-run decision too, with our slow
start to preparations and another state more than happy to
take over this opportunity. In September, the main
committee put out a “Call to Arms” meeting where they laid
open their interest and support to get behind the club and
support these championships. We also had to decide on
some significant issues such as the date, venue,
commitment to place deposits and spend funds on
publishing materials and merchandise. I extend a vote of
gratitude and thanks to all those who attended the meeting
and helped to kick start Canberra 2021. I am pleased to
announce Bryan Thomas as Governor of the
Championships, who the main committee and local
organising committee will work with to ensure a successful
meet.
With the return of the hectic summer track season and
the general renewal of interest in summer sports, we are
fully focused on attracting new members. If you know of
someone who may be considering joining us, now is the time
to promote the club wherever you can. New member
inquiries are now met with a personal reply and offers of a
‘track buddy’ or ‘mentor’ by the ‘Newbie Wrangler’ to
make it easier to start or re-start with the club.
Another new initiative for this track season is Athletics
ACT (AACT) providing qualified officials at some of our
Thursday Track and Field nights to help our members learn
how to be an official. It’s a great chance to learn in a
friendly environment from very experienced and skilled
officials. There is also the chance to learn and gain
experience by volunteering at the AACT summer series.
ACTMA members can volunteer as ‘official observers’ to
learn from a head official and/or technical assistant without
the pressure of being relied on to get it right from the get-
go.
Congratulations to our club members who participated
in the winter throws competition in Wollongong. Joining
me at the meet were Jayne Hardy, Ray Green, Sharon
Gibbins, Suzie Gaynor, Albert Olivier and Andrew
Carter. It was a terrifically well organised little meet that
gave our members a chance to pitch themselves against
experienced throwers from other clubs. The blue and yellow
of our club uniforms looked terrific in the field, especially
with several ‘podium’ finishes cont. p.4

MONTHLY RUN/WALK HANDICAP ROSTERS FOR 2020
Roster sheets for the 2020 Run/Walk Handicaps will be
displayed at the October and November handicaps giving
members the opportunity to choose an event to do duty
before being allocated one. Please consider taking on the
Event Organiser or Assistant Event Organiser duties.
You will be given detailed instructions on how to do this
and a member of the Handicap Sub-Committee will go
over the course with you a day or so before the event to
familiarise you will the course and identify the locations
for course markers and where course marshals are to be
located.

(actually flashy blue ribbons to match) and PBs on the day.
Keep an eye out for the many great photos of ACTMA mem-
bers competing with their friends and peers from other states.
Many thanks to Robbie Costmeyer for his contributions
to the main committee over the last 18 months. Robbie has
retired from the main committee to focus his efforts on the
Run-Walk Handicap Sub-Committee, so his contributions to
the club aren’t lost, just transferred. With almost an entirely
new sub-committee taking up the reins in 2020, with seven
current sub-committee members retiring from the monthly
grind, it is comforting to know that a person of Robbie’s expe-
rience and knowledge is at the helm to guide the new sub-
committee.
I also wanted to give a special shout out to Shé Hawke
who will be AWOL from the club while she takes up a univer-
sity posting in Slovenia for three years. Shé has been enjoying
the throwing scene of late but doesn’t leave empty handed
after winning the raffle at the September Throws meet (see
photo). Shé also hasn’t left us empty handed either, as she
replaced herself with a returning member, her older brother,
Geoff Hawke (an accomplished tri-athlete). They like to pass
the baton around in this family, and Shé suggests that Geoff
has always been an inspiration for her. Geoff sends out a
warning to members that ‘he is back’, and just for the record
he reminds us that his marathon PB is 2hrs 47mins and 58
secs, set in his second marathon in 2003 aged 45 at the Mel-
bourne Marathon.
Finally, with the cold days behind us, I look forward to
competing and seeing you at the track or on the trails, or
maybe at a fortnightly throws event? With several new people
joining the throws of late (‘who haven’t thrown since school’),
I am excited about the coming Track and Field Season, and
confident of a bright future for the club towards 2021.
Regards
Shane Hutchison

BRUCE GRAHAM: 100
Bruce ran his first handicap at the Innabaayna course
in November 2007. Until 2010 all were on the long course
then he ran in the Frylink Series for five years but now he
has returned to the Thomas event. To date Bruce has won
eleven medals – six gold, three silver and two bronze. He has
always been the back-marker – usually very, very far back!
In both November 2008 and May 2009 Bruce accomplished a
very rare feat - winning the long course from the back mark.
Another unusual achievement is that Bruce has won
the trophy for being the best performer over the year in both
the Thomas and Frylink Series. In 2008 he had the best av-
erage performance in the Thomas Series and won again in
both 2016 and 2017. Bruce was the quickest in the short
course handicaps for four consecutive years from 2011to
2014. In 2008 and 2016 he was ‘King of the Mountains’ for
the long course and was crowned again for the short course
series in both 2012 and 2013.
Bruce is an aggressive front runner who has been un-
beaten over all distances from 1500m and mile to 10,000m
and the one hour run since participating in our track and
field program. He is the best middle and long distance run-
ner we have had for many years; certainly since the heady
days of former national champions Frank Green, Garry
Hand and Tony Murray during the mid and late 1980s.
Bruce has won a number of club track and field trophies such
as the Moore 3000m Series for twelve consecutive seasons
from 2008 to 2019 and the Pennington Middle Distance Se-
ries ten times between 2008 and 2019. After finishing third
in 2008 and being runner-up the following year Bruce won
the annual ‘Higgins Memorial 800m Handicap’ in 2013, he
was second again in both 2014 and 2015, third in 2016 and
enjoyed his second win, this time as an M55, in 2017 and
again in 2018 – so Bruce has never finished less than third
in all his eight outings.
Bruce was the recipient of the 2011 Fristad Award for
athletics excellence and was joint winner with sprinter Mi-
chael Roden in 2016 and walker Robin Whyte in 2017 then
the following two seasons, 2018 and 2019, he was the recipi-
ent of this prestigious award for the fourth and fifth occa-
sions. He was also runner-up for six other seasons (2009,
2010 and from 2012 to 2015).
His marathon PB of 2:36.40 set in the 2008 Canberra
Marathon is currently fourth best on our M45 ranking list.

You wouldn’t be dead for quids. A beautiful spring day for
the September Masters handicap. The courses for this popu-
lar event are set throughout the almost virgin woodland at
O’Connor Ridge in Belconnen. The long course being 8k and
the short course is, of course shorter at, 4k.
Race director Bill Egan and his team had prepared the
course and facilities to the usual high standard. So now all it
needed was runners and walkers to venture out and compete
with a spring in their step. Some 80 did just that.
Thomas
Gold Karen Daniels, Silver Nadine Morrison, Bronze
Mick Saunders.
There was a protest concerning the initial announcement
of place getters, the first I have experienced. Anyway, the
stewards upheld the protest and the above was the official
result.
Karen Daniels started from group 14 and 45m 34s later
reappeared at the timing gate. A break through for Karen
being her first gold medal, it will keep her other 9 (5 Silver
and 4 Bronze) company. Karen didn't expect to win but I
knew she had a chance if she ran hard. “I just kept running
not quite knowing how many were in front of me”. Karen’s
training tip is “Do hill repeats in training for the Master's
handicap runs!”
Nadine Morrison (How good is O’Connor Ridge) was actu-
ally the fastest of the place getters completing the course in
40m 55s. However, being allocated athletic group 27, result-
ed in a silvery finish. Nadine has won a gold in a previous
handicap.
“I feel this is one of our toughest handicap courses, with
lots of undulations, but it is a nice area to run. I was glad it
was still relatively cool, as in previous years it has often
tended to be our first warm one, coming out of winter. I've
been battling plantar fasciitis for the past twelve months, but
had a cortisone injection 3 weeks ago. On the day, I enjoyed
running with a lot more freedom in my foot and was pleased
to run at a faster rate than I have for quite a while. I'm hop-
ing my foot will continue to improve and that I can increase
my running frequency and intensity again. I've enjoyed a
battle with Robbie Costmeyer the past couple of months, as
we've been starting off the same group, but I guess the Hand-
icapper will now put an end to that!” - Nadine.
Bronze went to Mick Saunders, the oldest of the Thomas
place getters. Despite his seniority Mick started from athletic
group 20 and completed the course in 46m 47s, a kilometre
rate of 5m 51s, not shabby at all.
“I wasn’t expecting the medal in the Thomas because I
didn’t think I was eligible for it, having not run many handi-
caps this year. In fact, I haven’t done very much running at
all in the last few months. The course runs through beautiful
bushland and has no steep hills, so yes - I like it. The event
was well organized; I enjoyed it, though I notice the numbers
are dropping; I didn’t see anyone else for the first 3km. ”
Frylink
Gold Carol Baird, Silver Toby Bellwood, Bronze Ian
Bowden.
Fast and furious describes this shorter event for many,
but its number of participants is diminishing, only 15 com-
pared to 36 in 2015.
Carol Baird set out from group 26 and got back in 22m
57s to claim the Gold. “The start was great as it was all down
hill but it is in your head that they are the hills on the way
back. After giving Peter Kallio a hug at the turn around, I set
about the return. It was as I expected, harder than ever on
the hills, many of those that started earlier were walking
and this gave me confidence to maybe push for a medal. I
took a wrong turn just before returning to the bike path and
the finish, but my lead was good enough to keep me in front
when I realised my error and returned to finish ahead of To-
by and Ian. My training has been up and down as I took
three months off from running after the Canberra marathon.
I had an inflamed left hip joint and decided to take a com-
plete break”. Carol has always been inspired by our mature
aged athletic members, “they are all wonderful and amazing
people”.
The Bronze medallist, Ian Bowden, covered the distance
in exactly the same time, problem is he started from group
28, two above Carol’s. Both of these are no strangers to med-
als having won 30 between them from 377 runs.
Like a lot of us Ian has had some injury issues. He said a
medal wasn’t expected. He added that ” plus I have had a
sore left thigh / hip area for a month. I ran the course last
Tuesday for familiarisation, pulled up really sore, so had
physio treatment last Thursday. He massaged it and gave
me some exercises, and on Sunday I hardly felt the soreness,
so really big kudos to Cameron McInnes at Kingston Physio.”
The silver medallist, Toby Bellwood, is one of our newer run-
ners, having run less than 10 handicaps, hence yet to appear
in our statistics. cont. p.6

(Continued from p.5)
But he is making a good start having picked up two medals
so far, his silver will look good alongside the bronze won at
an earlier event. Toby ran at a cracking kilometre pace of 4m
53s, A Gold looks certain in the future! At M40 he is the fu-
ture of Masters in the ACT.
Waddell
Gold Chris Lang, Silver Jack Thackray, Bronze Lorna
England.
I’ve often said that group 1 Waddell is our ultimate desti-
ny, but seriously race walking is a respected athletic pursuit.
Gold medallist, Chris Lang, was an accomplished runner in
years past but injury stymied that. However, Chris is philo-
sophical about his predicament “I do the best I can in the
Waddell. To get the double Gold and fastest demonstrates,
(to me at least) a satisfying confirmation of my motivation;
which in turn has developed in reaction to a chronic injury to
my hip and lower right leg creating seriously mind numbing
debilitating pain when I run. Being a rational human ani-
mal, I don't run, these days, much to my regret and chagrin.
Walking allows to be an active participant in fellowship and
keep the pain below the threshold of total withdrawal. The
course is an old familiar track which I remember fondly from
my running days.”
Jack Thackray was the oldest place getter on the day. An
M85 he has run 184 times and has more medals than a
North Korean general (6 Gold, 3 Silver and 10 Bronze). His
Silver was the result of a 36 m 27s walk over the 4k. He’s
still a long way off group 1 too, starting from group 11.
Jack thought he would be in the top 5 or 6 going on his
training times, so he regarded his top 3 finish as a bonus as
O’Connor Ridge is always a trying course. Jack’s advice on
training is: ”I train 3 times a week at the A.I.S. for around 1
½ hrs sprint training over 60 to 100 metres. Then fast walks
in between sessions. I also do 2k fast walks and 4k to 5k for
the distance on the cycle path on Horse Park Drive in
Ngunnawal”. Also he enjoys the handicaps, “The ACT Vets,
Oops sorry, Masters always run their events very well, a
really good set up”.
Lorna England added another Bronze to add to her Gold
and Silver medals. Lorna has completed 52 handicaps and as
a W55 has the potential to get up to 250+ and a lot more med-
als. She may one day cut a dashing figure in Pyongyang as
well.
If it were a straight race
Our president Shane Hutchison ate the Thomas course at
a kilometre rate of 4m 16s and started from elite group 39,
the highest group with a starter. He finished in 13th place.
Shane has done 36 handicaps (all Thomas) and as a survivor
will almost certainly add to his three medals won to date. He
commented “The first part of the run I was feeling good under
ideal running conditions and my legs had warmed up nicely to
the task. I still felt strong going up the main hill and was
lining up for a fast finish. I usually try to up the tempo for
the last 1000m or so and switch my breathing rhythm from
aerobic to anaerobic for that last effort. But alas little or no
response from my legs, either tired from the day before or
missing the finishing conditioning track training provides,
anyway it was a fun event”.
Ken Gordon would have won the Frylink. Like Shane he
started at an elite group (43), the last to start in the Frylink
and achieved an impressive kilometre rate of 4m 51s. Ken is
an M55 and his WR per cent was 69.3, Ken is really what
Masters athletics is all about. “Although I managed to be the
fastest on course, I did find it to be it's usual challenging self.
Was a great day for running weather wise, so no excuses in
that department this month. Looking forward to Carol, Toby
and Ian joining me towards the back of the start group next
month!! Will be nice to have some 'friends' to run with”. Ken
has specialised in the Frylink having competed in it in every
of his 127 runs.
Fastest Waddell competitor was Chris Lang but he did
win Gold anyway!
Terry Giesecke (results pp. 15 and 16)
On a sad note, this (August) was
Frank Kresse’s last run with us. His
knees “are shot” and his specialist has
advised him to cease running. Frank
has been a member for many years and
was currently serving on the Club’s
main committee. We wish Frank well.

Nerelle had always enjoyed being active and had participated in netball, touch football, dance, workouts in the gym and
aerobics. When she decided to join the Army Reserves she commenced a regular running program in order to pass the fitness
test.
After her partner, Stephen Gray, had been encouraged by Geoff Barker to join our club and participate in the monthly
running handicaps Nerelle thought this would be a good opportunity for to meet like-minded people outside of work and the
idea of running on different bush trails around Canberra also appealed.
Nerelle’s first monthly running handicap was on the Mt Majura foothills course in April 2008 and exactly seven years
later she completed her fiftieth at the same venue. All her runs were in the Frylink Series in which she enjoyed considerable
success winning three gold and five bronze medals from her sixty-seven runs.

AMA Winter throwing Championships; Report and results 5 to 7 October
43 people (17 women and 26 men) participated in the
24th WTC held at Kerryn McCann Athletic Track in Wollon-
gong. Of these, four men and three women were ACTMA
representatives. The three days included:
Day 1 - Throws Pentathlon + Super Weight, 56lb & 100lb + party
Day 2 - all individual events including the Weight for Distance
Day 3 - Heavy Weight Pentathlon
The weather was pretty good although there was quite a
storm at the start of the first day and then we were hit with
mass clouds of flying ants and midges when the sun shone
and the wind died. This didn’t put anyone off though.
Ray Green M75, Sharon Gibbins W60 and Jayne Har-
dy W55 managed to compete on all three days which was
pretty exhausting. Suzie Gaynor W50, Shane Hutchison
M45, Andrew Carter M55 and Albert Olivier M35 came and
played on Day 2 and congratulations to everyone as we all
came home with placings.
Ray Green has only recently moved into the M75 age
group and has been breaking records for most of the throw-

Throwing handicap report — Hammer and Javelin 28th September 2019
Reporter John Reynolds
Four more records fell as twenty four throwers took
advantage of a sunny spring day to compete in the monthly
throws handicap event held at the Masson St venue. A good
javelin throw set up a victory for Grant Blewitt. His winning
score for the two handicap events was one metre ninety
three centimetres ahead of Caroline Campbell with Duncan
Macnicol a further forty centimetres back in third place. It
was Blewitts fourth win in forty handicap events. Bryan
Thomas has a small lead of four points over Caroline Camp-
bell in the yearly pointscore competition with only two hand-
icaps remaining for the year. Ray Green holds third place,
eight points behind Campbell.
Jayne Hardy & Chris White dominated the four
throwing events recording the best distances for the men &
women in all events, Hardy threw 40.87 in the hammer,
25.78 in the javelin, 3.42 in the 56lb weight & 12.03 in the
standard weight. White’s winning distances were 39.26 in
the hammer, an excellent 43.46 in the javelin, 7.42 in the
56lb weight throw & 14.45 in the standard weight.
Four records fell during the day, all in the 56lb weight
event. Nola de Chasal created a new Australian & ACT rec-
ord in the W80 age group with her toss of 1.10. Ray Green
threw 4.83 to break the M75 ACT record & Kevin Blewitt
also broke the ACT record with his throw of 3.11 in the M80
age division.
Wendy O’Brien recorded her 250th appearance at a
throwing handicap, putting her third on the number of ap-
pearances. She was presented with a commemorative shirt.
Below is a citation read by Bryan Thomas outlining her
achievements.
Wendy O’Brien W70 250 Throwing handicaps
Wendy participated in her first monthly throwing
handicap in April 1991 and now becomes just the third re-
cipient of the special commemorative polo shirt for having
completed 250 handicaps. Ray Green and Mary Wahren are
the others to reach this impressive milestone.
Along the way Wendy has won seven monthly trophies
– in July 1993, November 1994, March 1997, September
1999, March 2008, October 2009 and April 2015 as well as
being runner-up eight times and winning nine bronze med-
als.
Wendy was awarded the 1993 Clohessy Trophy as club
-person of the year for the handicap program and in 2009
she was third in the annual Connell Series point score.
Wendy has participated in throwing events at several
national championships as well as in the 1994 World Mas-
ters’ Games in Brisbane, the 2001 World Veterans’ Athletics
Championships also in Brisbane, the 2008 Oceania Champi-
onships in Townsville and the 2009 World Masters Games in
Sydney. A highlight was being invited to be a flag bearer for
the athletics contingent at the opening ceremony of the 2009
WMG. In 2008 and again the following year Wendy was
elected to the club committee.
Well done Wendy
Bryan Thomas
This months Oscar was awarded to Shé Hawke. She
was commencing her run in for a big effort in the javelin
when it was quickly pointed out by a couple of keen observ-
ers that she was holding javelin the wrong way around with
the tail pointing forward. To cap off a good day for Shé she
also won the wine. A competition for the most colourful um-
brella saw several very bright entries, By popular vote Ray-
lea Rudov’s umbrella was declared the winner The next
monthly throwing handicap will be on November 23rd.
Events to be contested are the hammer & the javelin fol-
lowed by the annual presentation of trophies. (results p.17)

Five enthusiastic ACT throwers took part in the recent
Australian Masters Games in Adelaide returning with a to-
tal of twenty seven medals including twenty three gold. Ste-

the six events he contested in the M55 age group. Bob
Banens M70, Jan Banens W75 & John Reynolds M75 all
came home with five gold medals while Carol Condon collect-
ed two gold, a silver & bronze in the W50 age division. A
highlight of their achievements was that they all won gold
medals in the hammer & weight throw events.

Bruce Graham and Stephen Gray 100 Handicaps (cont).
Cont from p.4
In October 2013 Bruce set an Australian Record for the
M50 one hour run with a distance of 17,357m. Then the fol-
lowing year he was first over 50 in the Gold Coast Half Mara-
thon in the excellent time of 73.51 and during a trip to
France to follow the Tour de France he managed to run the
Paris Marathon.
Because Bruce’s performances on the track have been
of such high quality and consistency he has been our nomina-
tion for Middle Distance, Distance Runner or Most Outstand-
ing Male Athlete of the Year in the annual AMA Awards eve-
ry year since 2009. The selection panel were so impressed by
his outstanding performances over such a long period they
created a Special Recognition Category within the 2017 an-
nual awards just for Bruce. Last year later he was runner-up
in the Most Outstanding Male Athlete category.
Bruce has been one of the star performers at every na-
tional championships since 2009. On most occasions he has
enjoyed convincing wins in the 5000m, 10,000m and cross-
country in which he was the fastest competitor. On the cou-
ple of times he was not the fastest he was only beaten by a
much younger athlete. Bruce was even more dominant in
these same events as an M50 in the 2012 Oceania Champion-
ships in Tauranga, NZ and in 2014 in Bendigo.
At the 2015 WMA Championships in Lyons Bruce won
silver in the M50 cross-country but he did even better at the
2016 championships in Perth where he won the cross-
country, was second in the half marathon and won bronze in
both the 5000 and 10,000m as well as being a member of both
gold medal winning Australian teams for the cross-country
and half marathon. Bruce was again the individual silver
medallist in cross-country at the 2018 World Championships
in Malaga, Spain but this time as an M55. He was also a
member of the national cross-country team that won bronze.
At the 2017 World Masters Games in Auckland Bruce was
outstanding winning all three M55 track distance events –
the 1500, 5000 and 10,000m.
STEPHEN GRAY: 100
Steve had always been involved in variety of sports
ever since being selected for his primary school 4st 7lb rugby
league team. Even as an adult Stephen played baseball,
cricket, rugby league, rugby union, racquet ball, squash,
touch football and oztag. While playing veterans’ rugby he
reached an age when it was hurting more and the recovery
was getting longer and longer. It was during this period that
Geoff Barker encouraged him to try our handicaps.
Stephen’s first monthly handicap was at Majura Park-
lands in April 2008. Almost all of his one hundred handicaps
have been in the long course event but he has also run nine
in the Frylink Series. Stephen becomes the 110th member to
have completed a century or more monthly handicaps.
To date Stephen has won one bronze medal. However,
he was the recipient of the Mullins Trophy for the Thomas
Series in 2015 for finishing the year nearest the fiftieth per-
centile and in 2018 he was the winner of the annual point
score for the series.
Steve is proud of his sixteen consecutive City 2 Surfs
from 1998 to 2013. He has also completed several Canberra
Times Fun Runs and numerous other races around Canberra
including mountain running events as well as three ACT
Vets’ Half Marathons.

Historian: Byran Thomas
40 YEARS AGO (November 1979) The term Vetrunner was first used as the magazine’s
banner in its third edition. Both the August and October news-letters were simply titled Newsletter No1 and No2 respectively.
Jack Tonkin, one of our original members, was also a leader of the ‘Stromlo Forest Fleet Feet’ (FFF), an unstruc-
tured but active social group of mature age long distance run-ners. The rivalry between us and the green and yellow clad FFF teams were often exciting tussles within the race, espe-
cially in the popular road relays such as the Canberra to Gun-ning, Canberra to Tidbinbilla and the Parliament House Re-
lays. Our fourth running handicap was a five miler at Lake Ginninderra. It was won by Pat Robertson from Brian Paxman
and Ken Daniels.
30 YEARS AGO (November 1989) Our first track and field night for the new season was
conducted at the beginning of the month. We agreed the ACTAA 10,000m championships and a special invitation 5000m race, which included Rob de Castella, Pat Carroll and
Jamie Harrison, and organized by Pat Clohessy could be held at the end of our evening’s program. Prior to these two special
events we had a Vets’ 3000m race with a record field of 97 (who said it couldn’t be done?) in which Garry Hand won in
8:50 and Susan Hobson was fourth in 9:31. The evening had been a successful co-operative venture.
Our unique track handicap series, now referred to as the Adler Series, had become so popular it was split into two divi-
sions - one for front-markers and the other for back-markers. M70 Gordon Boag was enjoying a “purple patch” regularly breaking records in a variety of events.
Ten teams participated in this year’s Sprint Marathon Relay held around the Blue Gums picnic area in Stromlo For-
est. As it was traditional in this unique relay most teams fin-ished close together, the winning team was led by Tony Mur-
ray. Other members of his team were Bill Leyden, Richard Melnick, Bronwyn Muller (Gardner), Terry Seddon and Ernie
Warner. The final handicap of the year saw 114 runners complete
the 7.1km loop of Lake Ginninderra. Ken Daniels won gold from Reg Johnson and Julie Fitch. The 1989 annual point
score went to Charlie Modrack from Doug Fry and Harry Tys. The prestigious club-person trophy, the Encouragement Award, was presented to Mike Adler.
20 YEARS AGO (November 1999)
Bill Stefaniak, ACT Minister for Sport, presented the club with an award for ‘Excellence in Organisational Manage-
ment’ as part of the government’s Awards for Excellence in Sports and Recreation.
We were still conducting our weekly athletics at Woden because of resurfacing the AIS Track in readiness for the 2000
Olympics. Although the grass track was heavy and not condu-cive to fast times, W40 Elaine Cooper was not daunted and set ACT Records for both the 3000m (10:20) and 1500m (4:57.5).
Three new records were set in the heavy weight throw; by W35 Jayne Hardy, M55 Ray Green and M45 Alex Turbin.
The final monthly throwing handicap of the year was a twilight competition in javelin and hammer. Jayne Hardy was
best just ahead of Tanya Colyer and Trish Thomas. The Con-nell Series annual point score was won by Tanya and the Clo-
hessy Trophy for club-person of the year was awarded to Jayne.
The final running handicap was conducted at Lake Gin-ninderra. 148 ran the 7.6km loop won by John McMillan from Terry Levings and Bernie Hackett while 67 did the short
course won by Carmen Carlon from Bev Breen and David Mey-ers. John Hart and John McMillan were presented with their
‘100’ and ’50 runs’ T shirts respectively. Steve Appleby was the winner of long course point score while Cathy Montalto was
the Frylink Series winner. Terry Levings was the recipient of
this year’s Encouragement Award as club-person of the year.
10 YEARS AGO (November 2009) As part of the club’s 30th anniversary celebrations a
facsimile of our third club news sheet, and the first to use the mast head Vetrunner was published in this month’s Vetrunner.
Our 30th Anniversary Dinner Dance, held at the Canberra Club, was a huge success. More than 160 members and friends
enjoyed the evening. As people arrived they saw a colourful display of historic photographs and memorabilia at which they
could study while sipping a complimentary glass of bubbly. Special features of the evening included a humorous skit and a song and dance act about a couple of typical veteran athletes
doing their thing. Special groups of members - such as the ‘Originals’ who had maintained continuous membership since
1979, Life Members and former Presidents in attendance were introduced by the MC Robert Kennelly. Of course an enjoyable
part of the evening was dancing to popular musical hits of the 1970s and 80s.
Six members – Kelley Flood, Mick Horan, John Ken-nedy, Rad Leovic, Diana Schneider and Paul Veldkamp, tack-
led the ‘Four Peaks Race’ over Melbourne Cup weekend. This involved running up the four highest mountains in Victoria in consecutive days. A highlight of the weekend was Mick propos-
ing to Kelley on the top of Mt Feathertop on her 49th birthday. The major awards associated with both the final
monthly run/walk and throwing handicaps were presented following the respective competitions. The long course run
handicap was won by Angel Marina from Audrey Gormley and Ruth Baussmann. Ken Gordon won the Frylink ahead of wife
Deb and Gary Bowen while the Waddell walk was won by Des Butler (photo below right) from Dorothy Seedsman and
Geoff Barker. Kent Williams earned his ‘150 handicaps’ T shirt and Martin Butterfield his ‘50’. Winners of the annual point
scores, best performers for the year and the Mullins Trophies were – Bob Lowry, Kent Williams and Alan Duus for the Thomas Series; Ray Bramwell, Carol Baird and Geoff Moore
for the Frylink Series while in the Waddell Series John Bus-teed, John Suiter and Bob Parker were the trophy winners.
Carol Baird was the recipient of the Encouragement Award as club-person of the year.
Ray Green was the winner of the throwing handicap, incorporating hammer and javelin, from Kevin Blewitt and
Bryan Thomas. The Connell Series point score was won by Mary Wahren from Narelle Blackaby and Wendy O’Brien.
Winners of the best performer in each age group over the year were – W40 Narelle Blackaby, W45 Jayne Hardy, W60 Marga-ret Taylor, W65 Janice Banens, W70 Nola de Chazal, W75
Mary Wahren, M45 Grant Blewitt, M50 Ray Chambers, M55 Peter Schumack, M60 Bob Banens, M65 Ray Green, M70 Kev-
in Blewitt, M75 Peter Neill (photo below left) and M85 Ewen Drummond. The Clohessy Trophy for club-person of the year
was presented to Ray Green.

All copy and queries for the August edition to the editor
at: [email protected] Late submissions may
only be accepted if space allows.
Articles
All reports, articles and stories submitted for inclusion
in Vetrunner should be created in Word, in Century
Schoolbook 9pt. font. I welcome member’s contribution
which is of an athletic theme, or tells of that member
achieving an important milestone or award, or just has a
story to tell that relates to a person’s background outside
of athletics. These include photographs and illustrations
where possible or appropriate. Minor editing may be un-
dertaken. Letters to the editor are welcome. It is im-
portant that the club has a vehicle for receiving and an-
swering constructive factual criticism and comments.
Photos
When taking photos of award ceremonies, please en-
sure that the awardees are looking in your direction and
the background and foreground of the photo do not detract
from the importance of the moment. Please ask the sub-
jects if they would mind removing their sunglasses. All in
all, check your surroundings before clicking. Action photos
are particularly welcome. Photos may be cropped where
appropriate. Please ensure photos are sharp and sent as
large photos. Small or blurry photos are unusable.
Our second last Vetrunner for the year celebrates some
great milestones, Charlie Modrak 300 R/W handicaps and
Wendy O’Brien 250 throwing handicaps. We have full re-
sults from Mackay, Wollongong and Adelaide pp.7 to 9.
Pictures for the throwing handicap are on the back.
Clare Wall W65 has taken the silver medal (see oppo-
site) in her age group for the Chicago Marathon in 3.41.46
a much faster time than she had been running. She is
tackling the New York Marathon next. One more success
story; Sue Archer W70 won her age group in the WMRA/
WMA Masters Championships, held on Saturday, Septem-
ber 6th, at Gagliano del Capo, Italy . This is the world
mountain running championships. Full report and pictures
from both stories in the December Vetrunner.
I wish to thank all our contributors especially Bryan
Thomas for his many contributions, Suzie Gaynor for her
photos from all venues, John Kennedy’s photos at the run/
walk handicap. Also thanks to our ever reliable proof read-
ers, Dave Mackenzie and Cory Collins. We appreciate our
regular Throws reporters; John Reynolds and Jayne Hardy
and the Geoff Barker inspired team of run/walk handicap
reporters, on this occasion, Terry Giesecke. A very special
thanks to the contributors in the field; for copy and for
photos; Jan Banens, Bob Banens, Jayne Hardy, John
Reynolds and Suzie Gaynor.
As a general rule I will publish material that is pub-
licly acknowledged. Articles submitted to Vetrunner but
not published are usually the result of page limitations,
and may be included in the following edition of Vetrunner.
Constructive comment is welcome and should be addressed
to the editor at: [email protected]
If you wish to volunteer for the rewarding and excit-
ing post of guest editor, we are pleased to say that we still
have two spots available in 2020; May (work done in first
half of April) and September (work done in first half of Au-
gust). Feel free to contact us below.

We had the best spring weather for our October Throws Pentathlon on
the 13th October. Eight members turned up with the return of Tom Stead into
the M70 age group. Tom has been busy with coaching and officiating in ath-
letics for years and it is good to have him back. Chris White M50 was very
strong in all his events and was only 170 points off the ACT M50 Throws Pen-
tathlon record - great job! There was a great battle in the W75 age group be-
tween Raylea Rudov and Caroline Campbell with some close distances and
points in the Shot, Discus and Javelin, but in the end, Raylea’s Hammer and
Weight helped earn her 1st place. Suzie Gaynor W50 and Shane Hutchison
M45 have been putting in some hard training in their Hammer turns and it
was great to see them putting into practice at the comp.
