Being a BisonBeing a Bison

Both of Bucknell’s swimming & diving teams

rankings from the CSCAA in

2006-07.

The term “student-athlete” signifi es something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University.

Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics.

Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar fi rst and foremost. You be-lieve that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience.

At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national lead-ers in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In do-ing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

“Swimming at Bucknell is like noth-ing I’ve ever done before. Even though I’ve had to push myself harder than I ever thought possible, I have enjoyed the past three years more than I can put into words. Being able train with such a talented group of athletes has helped me improve both in the water and out of it.”

Bucknell Bison AthleticsSetting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Amer-icans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

According to federal data released in the fall of 2006 by the NCAA and reported on by the Associated Press and The Chronicle of Higher Education, Bucknell’s four-year student-athlete graduation rate was highest in the nation among stu-dent-athletes who entered college between the 1996-97 and 1990-2000 academic years. Bucknell was one of four institu-tions to graduate at least 90 percent of its student-athletes who enrolled during that four-year period. Bucknell posted a 93-percent rate, followed by Davidson (90 percent), Duke (90 percent) and Georgetown (90 percent).

Bucknell has claimed 108 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports confer-ence in 1990-91. That is more than twice the next-highest total.

Bucknell student-athletes comprised nearly one-fourth of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2006-07. A record total of 360 Bison recorded a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 245 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the fall of 2006.

26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2007.

In addition to the 114 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Amer-icans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 240 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including 20 last year.

With six more Patriot League championships in 2006-07, Bucknell has now earned 65 crowns in 17 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 85 conference players of the year, 76 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 442 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 13 times in the 17-year history of the affiliation, including nine of the last 10 years. Bucknell captured the overall, men’s and women’s Cup standings in 2006-07, when the Bison teams won six Patriot League titles. It was the 10th straight year and the 13th time overall, that the Bison captured the women’s title. In 2006-07, Bucknell won titles in men’s soccer, women’s cross country, women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, men’s golf and women’s rowing. The men’s basketball, women’s basketball and women’s soccer teams also captured Patriot League regu-lar-season titles.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Maga-zine All-America selections.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athlet-ics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recre-ation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natato-rium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A new Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff , and new locker room and class-room space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Kinney Natatorium

opened in October 2002.

The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fi elds and in the classroom. With 13 Patri-ot League Presidents’ Cups in 17 years, national leadership in gradu-ation rates, 114 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans in 37 years and 108 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 17years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model.

The 2003 addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recre-ation Center, one of the fi nest collegiate athletics and recreation ven-ues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-ath-letes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressio-nal Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offi ces for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recre-ation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The new construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as intramu-ral, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the sce-nic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; and the spacious West Fields Complex, which encompasses Depew Field (baseball), Varsity Softball Field and the adjoining Gra-ham Field (Astroturf for fi eld hockey and women’s lacrosse) and Var-sity Soccer Field (natural grass) venues that now feature a brand new stadium/press box facility.

RAMER SCHAFFNER MEMORIAL HALLRamer Schaffner Memorial Hall greets guests as they enter the

Langone Athletics and Recreation Center. The entry hall features the busts of 2nd Lt. George H. Ramer and 1st Lt. Dwite H. Schaffner, Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, and provides ac-cess to Gerhard Fieldhouse and the Krebs Family Fitness Center on the ground level. Guests may proceed to the second level to enter Da-vis Gym, administrative offi ces and the Hall of Fame, which celebrates Bucknell’s Patriot League championships and other notable feats.

KREBS FITNESS CENTERPromoting lifetime wellness, the Krebs Family Fitness Center con-

tains state-of-the-art cardiovascular and strength conditioning equip-ment. The 16,000-square-foot center includes over 175 positions for equipment within three distinct areas. The fi rst-level cardiovascular and pin-select equipment is open for student, faculty and staff use at all times. Directly above, the mezzanine also contains cardio equip-ment, with scenic views of the campus and natatorium.

The third area, the Berger Family Weight Room, sits on the for-mer site of Freas-Rooke Pool, and is used for instructional free-weight training and varsity workouts.

KINNEY NATATORIUMKinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class

pool, which accommodates four varsity programs — men’s and wom-en’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allow-ing for multiple team practices and recreational swimming to occur simultaneously.

Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, rest-rooms, separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands.

Already Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Champi-onship. The facility has also served as host of the 2003, 2005 and 2007 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern Women’s Water Polo Championship and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s water polo national team, drawing rave re-views at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming championships moved to Kinney Natatorium.

The facility has proven to be quite a home pool advantage for Bucknell, which became the fi rst institution in league history to capture both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships in the same season in 2003. A total of 20 meet records and 16 league marks fell that weekend.

SOJKA PAVILIONSojka Pavilion provides the Bison men’s and women’s basketball

programs with one of the fi nest arenas in the East. A “fi rst-class” venue capable of seating 4,000 spectators for sporting and other campus events, the pavilion has walk-down access to all seats and unobstruct-ed views of the playing surface or concert stage for all spectators. The seating bowl features approximately 1,500 fi xed seats and 2,500 retractable seats, enabling an “expandable” open fl oor area with suf-fi cient space for three basketball courts for recreational activities and varsity practices. The spacious upper-level concourse includes two concession areas, restrooms, handicapped seating and several suites that overlook the fl oor.

Behind the scenes, on the fl oor level, Sojka Pavilion provides a green room for performance acts and other functions, a catering kitch-en for special events, ticket windows, locker room space for home and visiting teams and offi cials, and a loading dock capable of accommo-dating team buses and production trucks for televised events.

More than a dozen nationally televised basketball games have been aired from Sojka Pavilion, including the ESPN2 broadcast of the 2006 Patriot League championship game and an ESPN360 airing of the Bucknell-Villanova men’s game that drew a school-record crowd of 4,433.

2006-07 Season Review2006-07 Season Review

The Bucknell men’s swimming and diving team opened up 2006-07 with two meets on the road at Holy Cross and Boston College on Oct. 28 and 29, and came away with victories in both, by the scores of 155-81 and 178-121, respectively. The Bison won all 13 events against the Crusaders, while, with a strong start against the Eagles, were able to build a 78-33 advantage after col-lecting victories in fi ve of the fi rst six events, including sweeping the top three spots in the 1,000 free and the 100 breast.

On Nov. 4, the Orange and Blue opened the home portion of the schedule with the non-scored Bucknell Sprint Invitational. Competing against American and Villanova, the Bison were victorious in eight individual events and three relays. Jeffrey Manning was Bucknell’s lone double-winner as he was the top point scorer in both the one-meter and the three-meter dives.

The squad followed up with a double-dual meet at home in Kinney Natato-rium against Lafayette and Navy on Nov. 11, splitting its results with a victory over the Leopards, 217-82, while falling to the Midshipmen, 234-66. Matt Cran-dell was the top individual fi nisher for Bucknell as he collected two runner-up showings in the 100 fl y and in the 200 fl y.

On Nov. 18-19, the Bison played host to the Bucknell Trials/Finals Invita-tional and took second out of fi ve teams with 818 points. Binghamton came away with the top spot after scoring 830 points, while Old Dominion was third (611), Towson fourth (594) and Rider fi fth (440). Bradford Bennett was the lone event winner for the Orange and Blue on day one, claiming fi rst in the 100 breast with a personal-best time to move up to sixth on the Bucknell top-10 list. Crandell improved his ranking in the record books as well, capturing a run-ner-up fi nish in the 200 fl y in 1:53.31, good for fourth all-time in Bison history. After setting a personal best in the 100 breast on day one, Bennett posted a second-place time of 2:09.24 in the 200 breast on the second day of the meet, which vaulted him into the Bison record books with the seventh-fastest time in school history.

Coming off a second-place fi nish at the Bucknell Trials/Finals Invitational, the Orange and Blue dropped a 137-75 decision to Maryland-Baltimore County on Dec. 3 and closed out the fi rst semester with a record of 3-2 (2-1 PL). Man-ning took second in both diving events, while Crandell and Michael Deighan collected runner-up showings for the Orange and Blue, as well, in the 200 fl y and 200 breast, respectively.

The Bison returned to action on Jan. 6 against Princeton, and despite open-ing the meet by collecting wins in the fi rst two events, the squad dropped a 210-73 decision to the Tigers. Mark Kawczenski started things off by winning the opening event, the 100 back. Deighan followed up by going one-two in the 100 breast, however, the Bison were only able to manage one other event win the rest of the way as Crandell claimed the top time in the 200 fl y.

On Alumni weekend, Jan. 13, Bucknell came away with one win and one loss in its Patriot League double-dual meet in front of a packed Kinney Natato-rium. The Bison downed Colgate, 215-85, but fell to Army 191-109. Kawczen-ski, Bennett, Grant Steadman and John Peterman started things off with a win in the 200 medley relay. Kawczenski earned an individual fi rst-place fi nish for the Bison as well, in the 100 back in 52.98. David Iselin was also victorious, as he was fi rst to touch the wall in the 200 back.

Three members of the Orange and Blue took home fi rst-place fi nishes on Jan. 20, but Bucknell came up short against Columbia, falling by the score of 150-92. Deighan swam the 200 breast in 2:09.78, to win the event. Peterman and Patrick Stummer both took fi rst in events, as well, in the 100 free and the 500 free, respectively.

Then on Jan. 27, the Bison concluded the dual-meet portion of the 2006-07 schedule with a 154-146 setback to Lehigh to fi nish up with a record of 4-6, 3-3 in the Patriot League. The squad held a four-point lead with four events remaining, but could not hold off the Mountain Hawks on Senior Day. Crandell, the lone senior on the men’s side, was one of four members of the Orange and Blue to post individual wins in the meet.

Only a handful of Bucknell’s student-athletes were in action at the non-scored Bison Invitational on Feb. 3. Manning won both diving events and Iselin, the lone male swimmer to compete in the meet, took fourth in the 500 free.

At the Patriot League Championships, which were held Feb. 16-18 in Kinnney Natatorium, Bucknell took third out of eight teams with 557 points.

On day one, Luke Trafton broke the program 500 free record to fi nish as the runner-up in the event, as fi ve Bison records and 23 top-10 times were set in the three-day meet.

In the second day of competition, Bucknell posted wins in two events as the Orange and Blue started off the evening session with a gold-medal perfor-mance in the 200 medley relay as the team of Kawczenski, Bennett, Stead-man and set a new Bucknell record with the winning time of one minute, 31.93 seconds, becoming the fi rst Bison squad to capture a victory in the event at the league meet since 2000. Kawczenski later won an individual title as well, claiming fi rst in the 100 back. His fi nals time broke the school record of 50.14, posted by Don Steenson in 1992.

Then on the third and fi nal day of the championships, Trafton took home Male Rookie of the Meet honors and was one of fi ve members of the Orange and Blue to be named to the All-League squads. Trafton won the 1,650 free for his second individual PL title and set new school and facility records in the event with a time of 15:39.68.

Men’s 2006-07 SeasonReviewOpening up 2006-07 on the road, the Bucknell women’s swimming and div-

ing team split a pair of meets on the fi rst weekend of the season, defeating Holy Cross 139-96 on Oct. 28, but falling to Boston College, 168-132 on Oct. 29. Against the Crusaders, eight of the 11 individual events were won by members of the Orange and Blue, while the Bison took fi rst in both relays, as well. Facing the Eagles, Kristen Skroski won both distance freestyle events and Kelly Morris also had a hand in two victories, but it wasn’t quite enough in the close decision.

On Nov. 4, the Bison opened their home schedule with the non-scored Bucknell Sprint Invitational. Competing against American and Saint Francis (Pa.), Megan Mongan was part of three winning relays and posted four top-three individual fi nishes to lead the Orange and Blue. Mongan won the 100 IM, was the runner-up in the both the 50 fl y and the 100 free, and captured third in the 100 fl y. She also helped the Bison post victories in the 200 free, 200 medley and the 400 free relays.

Bucknell followed up with a double-dual meet against Lafayette and Navy at home in Kinney Natatorium on Nov. 11. The squad saw two top-10 marks fall from its record books, but was unable to come away with a win, tying the Leopards, 150-150, and falling to Navy, 200-100. The 200 medley relay squad of Courtney Warren, Morris, Katherine Munson and Rebecca Scheffter turned in the runner-up time in the event, 1:48.81 seconds, for the 10th-fastest time in Bucknell history. Morris broke into the Bison record books as an individual, as well, as her time of 1:08.20 in the 100 breast was good for third in the meet and ranks 10th all-time.

Then on Nov. 18-19, the Orange and Blue played host to the two-day Bucknell Trials/Finals Invitational and fi nished second out of fi ve teams with 968.5 points.

On day one, Morris improved upon her 100 breast time from the previous week, which initially landed her in the Bucknell record books. She fi nished sec-ond in the event with a time of one minute, 6.54 seconds, to move up to second on the Bison top-10 list. Lauren Russell cracked the program’s top-10 in the 100 back, fi nishing third in the event with a time of 1:06.54, good for 10th all-time.

In the second day of the competition, Laura Goeller was the lone event winner for the Bison as she captured the top spot in the 200 back, heading a one-two-three sweep in the event for the Orange and Blue. Goeller headed up another strong showing for the Bison in the 400 IM where she was the runner-up. Nikki Woodward fi nished right behind her in third, while Abigail Paules was fourth. In the 200 breast, Morris captured second with a time of 2:26.20, which landed her fi fth in the Bucknell record books.

The Bison closed out the fi rst semester with a 129-106 setback against Mary-land-Baltimore County on Dec. 3. Scheffter was the runner-up in the 50 free and took in the 100 free in 54.08. Munson and Skroski fi nished in the top three in two events as well, both with pairs of third-place fi nishes. Munson’s came in the 50 free and the 200 fl y, while Skroski scored in the 200 free and in the 500 free.

Bucknell began the second half of its schedule on Jan. 6 with a non-scored meet at Princeton with James Madison. In the individual events, the Bison took home two fi rst-place fi nishes and three runner-up showings. Warren and Skroski both collected wins for the Orange and Blue as Warren was the fi rst to touch the wall in the 50 back and Skroski posted the top time in the 100 free. On the boards, Eliza Massie set a program record in three-meter, six optionals with a mark of 257.54 was good for fi fth in the meet.

In front of a packed Kinney Natatorium on Alumni Weekend on Jan. 13, the Bison split a double-dual against two Patriot League opponents, trouncing Army 215-85, but coming up just short against Colgate, 158-142. The Orange and Blue started off on a high note as the team of Warren, Morris, Munson and Scheffter took fi rst in the 200 medley relay with a time of one minute, 48.61 seconds, good for 10th in the school record books. Warren posted a top-10 time as well, with a runner-up time of 59.56 in the 100 back, which was eighth-fastest Bison history.

On Jan. 20, Massie achieved a personal-best mark to take fi rst in one-meter diving, but Bucknell fell to Columbia, 190.5-187.5. Massie won the one-meter with a score of 252.00, to come within less than fi ve points of the Bucknell record to rank second on the program’s top-10 list. In the swimming events, Woodward fi nished fi rst in the 500 free, while Warren, Morris and Scheffter all took home two runner-up showings apiece.

The Bison celebrated Senior Day on Jan. 27 by posting wins in 12 of 16 events to roll to a 209-91 victory over Lehigh. The squad wrapped the 2006-07 dual-meet schedule with a record of 3-5-1, 3-2-1 in the Patriot League.

In preparation for the Patriot League Championships, Bucknell competed in the Bison Invitational on Feb. 3 alongside league opponents American, Lafayette and Navy. Rebecca Bersani was the runner-up in both diving events. Her score of 253.10 in one-meter diving was the best by a Bison for the season and improved her to second on the program’s top-10 list. Lauren Arey and Alexandra Lovallo both posted personal bests in the meet, as well. Arey’s came in the 200 free and Lovallo set a personal-best in the 50 free.

Bucknell took second at the Patriot League Championships which were held Feb. 16-18, in Kinney Natatorium with 644 points. Ten members of the Orange and Blue were named to the All-Patriot League fi rst and second teams, while 24 new program top-10 marks were set during the three-day meet, including a new school 500 free record of 4:55.73 posted by Woodward.

The Bison collected runner-up fi nishes in three events as Scheffter was sec-ond in the 50 free, Warren captured second in the 100 back and the 400 med-ley relay squad of Warren, Morris, Munson and Scheffter claimed second in the event.

Representing the Orange and Blue on the all-league fi rst team were Mun-son, Scheffter and Woodward, based on their individual point totals in the meet. Scheffter concluded her four years with the Bison with 181 championship points, good for third in the Patriot League among the Class of 2007. Earning spots on the second team were Bersani, Goeller, Massie, Mongan, Morris, Skroski and Warren.

Ben Leboza ’10 earned a Second

Team All-Patriot League selection as a freshman in 2007 after scoring 30 points at the

league meet.

Coming off a successful 2006-07 season that saw fi ve school records fall and culminated with a third-place fi nish at the Patriot League Cham-pionships, Bucknell swimming and diving head coach Dan Schinnerer believes the Bison men’s squad has great potential heading into the 2007-08 campaign.

“We’re looking to continue to move up the ladder at the league meet and close the gap or move in front of the teams that fi nished ahead of us,” said Schinnerer. “We have a fairly veteran group, a group that’s been together for a good amount of time, so I think

that makes for very strong team chemistry. I know as a whole the team members have some pretty high goals for themselves and are moti-vated as a unit for this upcoming season.”

SPRINT FREESTYLEBucknell returns a strong group of sprint freestylers, headed-up

by junior Mark Kawczenski and seniors Grant Steadman and John Peterman. Steadman was a fi nalist in both the 50- and 100-yard free at the Patriot League Championships, posting career-best times. Kaw-czenski was a fi nalist in the 50 free, where he fi nished sixth with the seventh-best time in program history (20.96), and made the consola-tion fi nals in the 100. Peterman qualifi ed for the fi nals in the 100 free, placing sixth, and was a consolation fi nalist in the 50. Senior Bradford Bennett scored in the 50 last season as well (16th).

“For this group it will be a quest to try and continue to improve and move further up in the scoring,” explained Schinnerer.

Schinnerer expects sophomore Dan Fletcher to begin playing a larger role in the100 free, as well, and has seen sophomore Ben Leboza, a middle-distance freestyler, show strength and development in the 100.

MID-FREESYLESchinnerer sees Leboza and junior Chris Amato as two of the

team’s top returnees in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Both rank among the program’s top-10 in those events and scored at the 2007 league meet.

“This is an area where we saw a lot of good things last year,” com-mented Schinnerer. “We had fi ve guys in the 200 free consolation fi nal at the 2007 championships, which is a great example of what we can build on. If we can get more of those guys into the fi nals, it would make a dramatic point difference for us. Those are the type of things we need to do to close the gap on Army and Navy.”

Schinnerer notes that Peterman also has the ability to stretch up to the 200 from the sprint group and sees Fletcher, sophomore Luke Trafton and junior Patrick Stummer as other potential contributors in the 200.

In the 500 free, the Bison return Trafton, who was the Patriot League runner-up and holds the school record in the event. Among Bucknell’s four consolation fi nalists in the 500 last season were Lebo-za, senior Joseph Metcalf, Amato and Stummer. “Leboza had a really good summer of training this year and that should translate well for him in his sophomore season,” Schinnerer explained.

DISTANCETrafton captured the Patriot League title in the 1,650 free at the

2007 championship meet, setting school records in the 1,000 and 1,650 free and is expected to lead the distance corps for the Orange and Blue again in 2007-08. Stummer and Leboza, who fi nished in the top-eight at the league meet last season, fourth and eighth, respec-tively, should continue to improve and provide points for the Bison. Also adding depth for the Orange and Blue will be senior Tyler Sowell and junior Jeffrey Ayres.

BACKSTROKEIn the backstroke events, Bucknell returns the 100 school record

holder and 2007 Patriot League champion in Kawczenski, who posted a time of 49.90 for his fi rst-place fi nish. In addition, sophomore David

Iselin scored in the 100 and 200 back at last season’s league meet, taking seventh in the 200 and 12th in the 100. His time in the 200 back placed him 10th on the program’s all-time list. Senior Matthew McGraw was a consolation fi nal in the 200 back last season as well. Schinnerer will also look to freshman Gonzalo DeLeon to contribute in the backstroke.

“I think he is someone who has the potential to be a real impact guy for us,” said Schinnerer, “especially in the 200 back.”

Sophomore Spencer Hallowell gives the Bison another option in this area as well.

BREASTSTROKEBreaststroke is arguably one of deepest event groups for the Bison

as the squad returns Metcalf, Bennett and junior Michael Deighan, who were all fi nalists in at least one breaststroke event at the Patriot League Championships in 2007. All three set new career bests in the 100, re-writing the program’s top-10 list. Bennett took third, while Met-calf was fi fth and Deighan won the consolation fi nal for a ninth-place fi nish. In the 200 breast, Metcalf fi nished third, Deighan was fi fth with a new Bucknell top-10 mark and Bennett was the top fi nisher in the consolation fi nal.

“I think we are well-balanced across the board in all of our events, but I think breaststroke is defi nitely one of our strengths,” commented Schinnerer.

Providing additional depth will be sophomore Brett Carey, who scored in both breastroke events at the league meet as a freshman (11th in the 200, 13th in the 100) and sophomore Ben Bible.

BUTTERFLYIn the butterfl y events, Schinnerer will look to a pair of newcomers

after losing perennial Patriot League scorer Matt Crandell to gradua-tion. Steadman returns for the Bison in the 100 following a sixth-place showing at the league meet in 2007 and freshmen Michael Volpe and Brendan Wills will lead the way in the 200 fl y, while also bolstering the team’s depth in the 100.

IMSchinnerer sees the IM as an area where individuals will need to

continue to develop and step up in as he looks ahead to the 2007-08 campaign. Fletcher, Carey and Deighan all reached the consolation fi nals in the 200 at the Patriot League Championships last season and Schinnerer feels they all have the ability to improve upon those per-formances.

In the 400 IM, Trafton narrowly missed the school record and went on to take fi fth at the league meet. Senior Theo Leriotis was a scorer for the Bison in the event as well and Schinnerer expects he will be a factor for the squad again this season.

DIVINGJunior Jeffery Manning is Bucknell’s top returning diver as he ranks

second in program history in both one-meter, six optionals and three-meter, six optionals. He was a fi nalist in the three-meter at the league championships last year as well, taking sixth in the event. Junior Ste-ven Schmaltz returns for the Bison, while the squad will also welcome freshman Andrew Vogl to the fold.

RELAYSThe entire school-record setting 2007 Patriot League champion

200 medley relay squad of Kawczen-ski, Bennett, Steadman and Peter-man remains intact for the Orange and Blue in 2007-08 and Schinnerer expects a variation of that group will be the core of Bucknell’s 400 medley relay and is excited about the team’s potential in both of those relays.

In the freestyle relays, Schinnerer believes the Bison have good depth, but will need to continue to develop some of their top performers to try and get closer to Bucknell’s records in those events.

Megan Mongan ’10is Bucknell’s top returning point scorer from the 2007 Patriot

LeagueChampionships.

Coming off a runner-up fi nish at the Patriot League Championships in 2006-07, the Bucknell women’s swim-ming and diving team is determined to continue the program’s history of success. Despite losing a group of key contributors to graduation, sec-ond-year head coach Dan Schinnerer feels that his young squad is up to the task.

“We graduated a pretty strong se-nior class from last season,” admitted Schinnerer. “A number of the women from the Class of 2007 were big con-tributors throughout their four years. We’re defi nitely young and have some

holes to fi ll, but we have the ability to fi ll those holes. The emphasis we have this year is really trying to get everyone to step up and develop. I think a lot of our athletes had good seasons last year and if we can build on those this year, it will make up for a lot of what we graduated. There is a great deal of potential throughout all the classes. Navy did not graduate many of its scorers from last season nor did Colgate. It will be a challenge to get back ahead of Navy and to remain in front of Colgate, but it’s a challenge we’re up for.”

SPRINT FREESTYLEIn the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, the Bison lost four-time

All-Patriot League selection Rebecca Scheffter to graduation, but re-turn sophomore Megan Mongan, who took fi fth in the 100 last season, posting the fourth-fastest time in school history. According to Schin-nerer, “she had a good freshman year, but has the potential to have a breakout sophomore season.”

In the 50 and 100, freshman Molly Goebel could potentially make an impact for the Orange and Blue along with returning juniors Alex-andra Lovallo and Susan Horstmann and senior Lauren Butrie. As a sophomore, Horstmann scored in the 100 free consolation fi nal at the league meet.

Schinnerer also notes that freshman Katie John and senior Kris-ten Skroski, who compete at some of the longer freestyle distances, could possibly move down to the 100 at times as Skroski was a part of Bucknell’s sprint relays as a junior.

MID-FREESTYLEIn the 200 and 500, Mongan and Skroski are expected to lead

the Bison as both were Patriot League scorers in 2007 and set new top-10 marks, not far from the program records. Mongan took fi fth at the PL Championships in the 200 free, posting the fourth-fastest time in school history (1:53.31). Skroski won the 200 and 500 consolation fi nals, each with times that rank sixth in the Bucknell record books, 1:53.68 and 5:03.32.

John’s best time is right amongst those of Mongan and Skroski and she is expected to be an additional contributor. Horstmann, But-rie and sophomore Lauren Arey will provide the Bison with additional depth in this area, as well.

DISTANCE FREESTYLESchinnerer will look to Skroski and John to lead Bucknell’s dis-

tance freestyle group. Skroski took eighth in the 1,650 free at the 2007 Patriot League Championships after posting two wins in the 1,000

during the year. Also returning is ju-nior Ally St. Claire, a 2006 all-league second team performer who scored in the 200 (15th), 500 (8th) and 1,650 (7th) at the league meet in 2007.

Junior Meghan O’Neill and senior Katalin Lyons could provide added points for the Orange and Blue in the distance events. Lyons, who missed the majority of her junior campaign due to injury, ranks ninth in the Bison record books for the 1,650.

BACKSTROKE

After strong performances by freshmen in the backstroke last sea-

son, Schinnerer expects this group to continue to develop as sophomores. Leading the way is Courtney Warren who was Bucknell’s top backstroker in 2006-07. She was the runner-up in the 100 at the league championships with the fourth-best time in school history, while also scoring in the 200 back (11th).

Right behind her throughout the year were Abigail Atkinson and Lau-ren Russell. Atkinson won the 100 back consolation fi nal at the league meet (9th) with the No. 10 time in pro-gram history (59.50) and also scored in the 200 (10th). Russell took 10th in the 100.

Sophomore Abby Paules, who took 13th in the 200 back at the PL Championships, will be called on again to contribute in this event group, along with freshman Sinead O’Dwyer.

BREASTSTROKEA strength for the Bison in 2006-07, Schinnerer believes the team’s

success in the breaststroke events will continue this season with Kelly Morris and Nikki Seaman back for their junior campaigns. Morris was fi fth in the 100 breast and fourth in the 200 at the 2007 league meet, while Seaman took 11th and ninth. Morris ranks second in the Bison record books in both events and Seaman holds the program’s fourth-best times in each.

Schinnerer feels the added talent of freshman Macey Keath “should provide a solid 1-2-3 punch” for the Orange and Blue.

Sophomore Caroline Walsh scored in the 200 breast at the Patriot League Championships as a freshman (14th) and should provide fur-ther depth, with senior Emmie Gallardo playing a role as well.

BUTTERFLYAccording to Schinnerer, the Bison “took a big hit in the butterfl y

events, losing Katherine Munson to graduation.” However, he looks for sophomore Sarah Pease to continue her development, coming off consolation fi nals appearances in both the 100 (16th) and 200 (12th) at the PL championship last season.

Schinnerer also feels that freshman Laura Twichell could develop into a strong contributor in this area, while sophomore Whitney Brown will add to the team’s depth in this event group.

IMIn the 200 IM, Bucknell returns Mongan, Russell and Atkinson. All

were Patriot League scorers in 2007, Mongan in the fi nals (8th) and Russell and Atkinson in the consolation fi nals, fi nishing 11th and 13th, respectively. Mongan and Russell both rank in the program’s top-10 for the 200 with Mongan standing sixth and Russell seventh.

Russell won the consolation fi nal in the 400 IM at the league meet as well, taking ninth overall with the sixth-fastest time in school history. Schinnerer expects Keath to bolster the team’s strength in this area along with O’Dwyer and sophomore Abigail Paules.

DIVINGSophomores Eliza Massie and Rebecca Bersani led the Bison div-

ers in 2006-07 as freshmen, both earning All-Patriot League second team selections. Bersani was the top performer for the Orange and Blue with third-place showings on both the one-meter and three-meter boards at the Patriot League Championships. Massie, who took fourth and fi fth in one-meter and three-meter compe-tition, respectively, at the PL meet, also set a Bucknell record in three-meter, six optionals during the sea-son. Sophomore Allison FitzPatrick entered the program record books as a freshman, as well, and is expected to make further strides in her second season.

Second SeasonDan Schinnerer enters his second sea-

son as the head men’s and women’s swim-ming and diving coach at Bucknell.

In his fi rst season at the helm for the Bison, fi ve school records fell on the men’s side (500 free, 1,000 free, 1,650 free, 100 back and 200 medley relay) as the squad captured two individual and one relay title at the Patriot League Championships. The

Bucknell men took third at the league meet and Luke Trafton collected Rookie of the Meet honors.

Under Shinnerer’s direction, the women’s team produced 10 all-league performers on the way to a second-place fi nish at the Patriot League Championships. New records were set in the 500 free and the three-meter diving, six optionals, as well.

Prior to becoming the frontman for the Bison, the Yale gradu-ate was most recently an assistant coach with Michigan’s nationally ranked men’s swimming team.

Schinnerer had been associated with the vaunted Michigan pro-gram since 2003, fi rst as a volunteer assistant and then as a full-time assistant coach beginning in July 2004. Over his last three seasons the Wolverines fi nished fi fth, sixth and eighth, respectively, at the NCAA Championships, and in each of his last two years they produced two NCAA individual champions.

Schinnerer, who served as the team’s recruiting coordinator and budget administrator, designed and implemented the training program for the sprint and breaststroke group. He was able to work with Olym-pic-caliber swimmers, including Michigan student assistant coach Mi-chael Phelps, who won six gold medals and eight total medals at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Four Michigan swimmers competed on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team. The Wolverines placed fi ve swimmers with Michigan ties on the 2005 USA World Championship Team, and the Club Wolverine squad swept the men’s, women’s and combined titles

Dan SchinnererDan Schinnerer at the national championships in the summer of 2006. At Michigan Schinnerer apprenticed under a pair of legendary

head coaches in Jon Urbanchek and Bob Bowman. Urbanchek, an American Swimming Coaches Association Hall of Famer, won a na-tional championship and 13 Big Ten titles in 22 years at Michigan, and he coached in every Olympic Games from 1984 through 2004. He sent 28 of his Wolverine swimmers to the Olympics, and eight of those athletes combined to win 15 medals. Bowman took over the program in April 2004 after a successful nine-year stint at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, where Phelps was one of his prize pupils. For his ac-complishments with North Baltimore, Bowman won the USA Swim-ming and the American Swimming Coaches Association Coach of the Year Awards in 2001 and 2003. He was also named the USA Swim-ming Developmental Coach of the Year in 2002.

Schinnerer was also heavily involved in Michigan’s highly regard-ed summer swimming camp program, where he mentored both girls and boys aged 9-18. As assistant camp director and head coach of the intensive camp, he worked with many top young swimmers on stroke technique and training principles.

At Yale, Schinnerer was a four-year swimming letterman, where he graduated from in 2001 with a bachelor of arts degree in history. As a member of the Bulldogs swimming team, he was a Senior Nationals qualifi er and was the recipient of the William Leeming Jellife Award for “greatest progress and development in swimming ability and outstand-ing leadership during his college years.”

The Grand Rapids, Mich., native went on to teach history and serve as assistant swimming coach at The Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J. He helped Peddie to an Eastern Interscholastic Prep School girls’ title in 2002 and a boys’ championship in 2003. Schinnerer coached multiple NISCA All-Americans, U.S. Open qualifi ers and senior nation-al qualifi ers at Peddie.

At Bucknell, Schinnerer has taken over a storied Bison swimming and diving program that has excelled since moving into the state-of-the-art Kinney Natatorium in 2002-03. Bucknell’s women captured four straight Patriot League championships from 2003-2006, while the Bison men won the title in 2003 and have fi nished among the top four team over the past four seasons. The Bucknell men won the 1964 NCAA College Division championship and have won 18 conference titles since 1960.

Schinnerer resides in Lewisburg with his wife Lesia, and their son Kase.

First SeasonDan Schupsky, former assistant men’s

swimming coach at The College of New Jer-sey, begins his fi rst season as an assistant coach for Bucknell swimming and diving in 2007-08.

Schupsky, who graduated from TCNJ in 2001 with a bachelor of science in phys-ics and secondary education, served a dual role as both an assistant coach for the Li-

ons and as the aquatics graduate assistant since beginning work on a master’s degree in education in 2005. He also spent time as the head YMCA summer swim coach at the Hunterdon County YMCA and was the boy’s head swimming coach at North Hunterdon High School in Annandale, N.J.

“Dan brings a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to our pro-gram,” said Bucknell head coach Dan Schinnerer. “He was an integral part of helping The College of New Jersey rise through the ranks of Division III swimming. His experience and motivation will help our pro-gram as we look to continue to reach new heights. His knowledge of coaching technique and swimmer development will be a great asset to the program.”

As an undergraduate, Schupsky was a four-time NCAA qualifi er at TCNJ and garnered 17 All-America honors as well as two Academic All-America selections while also setting six school records. The two-year captain of the Lions was the METRO Conference Rookie of the Year in 1997 and went on to collect three METRO Conference Swim-mer of the Meet awards, while being named TCNJ’s Most Valuable Swimmer all three years as well.

Bucknell trustee William D. Dearstyne Jr., a member of the Class of 1962, has established the Robert A. Latour Varsity Swimming and Diving Endowment. Dearstyne’s signifi cant gift to the university permanently endows the head coaching position for swimming and diving, along with providing funds for the program.

Latour began coaching at Bucknell in 1956. In 12 years, he led his swim teams to an overall 83-31 record in dual meets and six Middle Atlantic Conference championships. His 1964 squad won the inaugural NCAA college division championship, still the only NCAA title held by Bucknell. From 1968 to his retirement 10 years later, Latour served as Bucknell’s athletic director.

A fellow Bucknell Hall of Famer with Latour, Dearstyne, company group chairman of Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick, N.J., and a member of Bucknell’s Board of Trustees since 1991, was considered one of the fi nest swimmers in the history of the former Middle Atlantic Conference, winning six MAC titles in record-breaking times in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke. A two-time co-captain

who was undefeated in 30 consecutive 200-yard backstroke races, he also was a member of two Bucknell 400-yard medley relay teams that set records while winning MAC crowns. As a sophomore, Dearstyne was the Eastern Intercollegiate 100-yard backstroke champion. In 1962, he was named the outstanding athlete in Bucknell’s senior class.

In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors 23 sports – 11 for men and 12 for women. Initially started as a NCAA Division I-AA foot-ball conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Col-gate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members in football. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked fi rst each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Success Rate report. In addition, the Patriot League fi nished as one of the nation’s leaders in the NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) among all Division I conferences award-ing athletic aid. The APR is used to measure academic eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes.

Patriot League student-athletes and teams continue to enjoy success at the national level, with opening round victories coming in several NCAA Championships, including wins in men’s basket-ball during the 2005 and 2006 seasons, a championship game appearance in both football and men’s lacrosse, and a sixth-place individual fi nish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship.

The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in so-ciety.

During the 2006-07 year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following;

Fourteen Patriot League student-athletes were named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans including American’s Heidi Hershberger (fi eld hockey), Army’s Nick Hill (base-ball), Lindsey Gerheim (softball) and Patrick Beverly (golf), Bucknell’s Shannon Curd (women’s soccer), David Frisbey (football) and Melanie Buczko (women’s cross country/track and fi eld), Lafayette’s James Conrad (baseball) and Navy’s Lizzie Barnes (women’s soccer), Kari Weniger (women’s soc-cer), Chris Renninger (golf), Kelly Zahalka (women’s swim-ming and diving), Michael Niemi (men’s cross country/track and fi eld) and Kirsten Andrews (women’s cross country/track and fi eld).A total of 54 Patriot League student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine All-District Academic All-American honors. Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs comple-ment each other, where 3,400 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For more than 160 years, the University has remained true to its funda-mental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world.

In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which

includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the pre-mier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” Students helped shape this vision because of their confi dence in the University.

The Plan comprises fi ve strategies:

Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation;

Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will pro-vide a residential learning and living experience that comple-ments the academic program, integrates the athletics and rec-reation program and promotes personal growth and develop-ment and civic and ethical re-sponsibility;

Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world;

Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communica-tions — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partner-ships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research;

Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and

ensure our fi nancial future.

The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun imple-menting it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. To read the complete version of The Plan for Bucknell or to request a published version, see http://www.bucknell.edu/The-PlanforBucknell

In 2006, the Bucknell Department of Ath-letics and Recreation announced its new “Bi-son Good Sports!” campaign, a sportsman-ship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events.

The objective of the campaign, according to Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt “is to thank fans for the tremen-

dous energy and enthusiasm they bring to each Bucknell athletics contest while also empowering them as caretakers of the collegiate gameday experience. While the extremes of unwanted behavior and its impact on home and visiting fans are not commonplace at Bison athletics events, Bucknell and our visiting teams ask for our fans’ help in keeping their support of our teams positive and cheer with positive encouragement, rather than supporting an atmo-sphere of intimidation that attempts to degrade opposing players and teams. We hope that our fans will continue to join our players, coaches and staff in helping all spectators fi nd creative and inge-nious ways to positively support our Bucknell student-athletes.”

The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell Uni-versity.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their fi rst priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of stu-dent-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engage-ment, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for stu-dents, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Col-leges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Depart-ment subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders.
