1.1 Geographic setting

Three mountain ranges are presents:

Pollino, Sila and Aspromonte.

Everyone gives the name at three

National Park. Pollino Mountains in the

north of the region are rugged and form

a natural barrier separating Calabria from

the rest of Italy. Parts of the area are

heavily wooded, while others are vast,

wind-swept plateaus with little

vegetation. These mountains are home

to a rare “Loricato Pine” variety. La Sila is

a vast mountainous plateau, which

stretches for nearly 2,000 square

kilometres along the central part of

Calabria. Its highest point at Monte

Scuro, at 1,928 m. and is full of wide.

The area boasts numerous lakes and

dense coniferous forests “Laricius Pine”.

The Aspromonte massif forms the

southernmost tip of the Italian peninsula

bordered by the sea on three sides.

PRESENTATION OF PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF THE REGIONAL DIAGNOSIS

10

BRIEF PRESENTATION OF THE REGION SOCIOECONOMIC CONTEXT OF AGRI-FOOD SECTOR IN THE REGION

Substantial stability in the value of agricultural production in 2017 (+ 0.6% compared to the previous year, estimated figure) in contrast with the national average (-2.4%).

Increase in production volume (+ 5.6%) in contrast with the national average (-2.4%).

Value added up (+ 6.5% in volume) in contrast with the rest of the country.

11

In 2017, economic activity grew modestly, in line with the previous year. The cyclical recovery, underway for three years, is mainly supported by domestic demand.

There is a recovery in the productivity of companies, which however remains at levels significantly lower than the rest of the country. The gap depends on internal factors within companies (e.g. low use of advanced technologies).
