A TRIBUTE TO SRI SRI SRI Dr. BALAGANGADHARANATHA

MAHASWAMIJI

(1945 – 2013)

गुरु ब्रम्हा गुरु विष्णू, गुरुः देवो महेश्वरा ।गुरु शाक्षात परब्रम्हा तस्मै श्री गुरुवे नमः ।।

A Monk, Prolific Thinker, Incredible orator and Passionate Patriot, Jagadguru Padmabhooshana Bhairavaikya Sri Sri Sri Dr. Balagangadharanatha Mahaswamiji is among Karnataka’s eminent son who worked tirelessly towards betterment of the society, in servitude of the poor and needy, dedicating his all for his country. His message of universal brotherhood and self-awakening remains relevant especially in the current backdrop of widespread political turmoil around the world.

He took over the ancient Natha Center of Worship, Shri Adichunchanagiri Mahasamsthana Math, as the 71st Pontiff in the year 1974. In his divine and holistic leadership the Math witnessed sky-scraping height of human services with several flagship projects i.e Anna (food), Arugya (health care), Adhyathma (spirituality), Ashraya (shelter), and Akshara (education) etc. touching the life’s of lakhs of people during the last four decades. The Akshara project was in progress under the foundation of Sri Adichunchanagiri Shikshana Trust® (1973).

He opted the life mantra ‘Karma Yoga’ and ‘Jana

& Karma’ reflected in his whole divine life where he tirelessly worked for the betterment of the Society. Through Sri Adichunchanagiri Shikshana Trust®, and Mahasamthana math he aided more than 450+ Educational institutions, free boarding and lodging facilities for poor students in almost all district head quarters in this state. The schools for the visually disabled children in Ramanagar reflect his social equality and love to all segments of peoples in society. His holistic vision and spiritual responsibilities and social reforms reflected when he established eight schools which impart Sanskrit & traditional Education and propagation of Vedas and other Scriptures which are enriched with Knowledge.

The vision and endeavor of Mahaswamiji, where Adichunchanagiri University stands tall with its bright colour spectrum of various educational programs starting with medical education to education studies via Pharmacy, Nursing, Technology etc.

Sri Adichunchanagiri College of pharmacy is collectively embarking on a great voyage to the frontiers of pharmaceutical knowledge and proficiency, which is where students will begin their individual exploration in the yet unchartered territory of sufferings and diseases. ‘Auoshadhagiri- 2021’ (Vol-VIII), is a true creation and representation of and by the students. It is a rare opportunity to exhibit and share their experience and enhance their talent amongst their contemporaries and faculty members. Auoshadhagiri-2021, (Vol-VIII), surely boosts the morale amongst the millennial students towards creativity and reflects the high cultural and aesthetic values which are universal and genuinely radiate about.

I do appreciate and applaud the editorial team for their successful completion of this tedious yet daunting task of putting together the myriad thoughts and dreams of students into a meaningful and delightful visual fest. About the department:

The Department of Pharmaceutics established in the year 2009 and Pharmaceutical Regulatory Affairs in 2020. The Department of Pharmaceutics is a place where commitment to excellence in academia, research and development is demonstrated through the productivity and success of faculty and students. The Department continue to march with times and focuses on expanding the scientific avenues for improving the delivery of drugs and therapeutic agents. Department offer a training environment that includes the latest formulation laboratory instrumentation and technologies supervised by faculty with potent, powerful blend of academic experience and industry exposure. The department is equipped with the state of art laboratories, ultra-modern facilities, and offer diverse opportunities for students learning.

The focused research areas of the department are i) Pre-formulation studies, ii) Development of different pharmaceutical dosage forms including novel and nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems, iii) Evaluation of developed dosage forms with respect to various in vitro and in vivo parameters and iv) Studying the biopharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic aspects of the drug as well as its dosage forms.

Department has MoU with PTI (Pharma Training Institute, Bangalore) which imparts the Industrial knowledge and skills to the students. Department has also received research grants from different funding agencies like VGST, RGUHS, AICTE etc.

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

and Analysis


Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry is established in the year 2010. It is an integral part of pharmacy education involving several aspects of new drug discovery and development in collaboration with other disciplines of pharmacy. The department is extensively involved in the postgraduate programme in ‘Pharmaceutical Chemistry” which involves learning of various aspects of Advanced Organic Chemistry including Process Chemistry, Advanced Medicinal Chemistry and CADD. Research laboratories are equipped with various basic and essential instruments like Carousal Radleys Parallel Synthesiser, High-Speed Centrifuge etc which are useful for the synthesis of New Chemical Entities (NCEs).

Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis deals with the analysis of the raw materials as well as finished pharmaceutical formulations which are very important for the evaluation of quality, safety, and efficacy of pharmaceutical products. Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis has advanced facilities of chromatography and spectroscopy for analytical characterization of drugs and excipients. The department has a research laboratory for postgraduate students and a sophisticated laboratory dedicated for UG, PG and PhD students. Research lab is equipped with, Shimadzu HPLC (Premier), Ependrop Centrifuge, gas chromatography (Agilent) along with gel electrophoresis.

The drug testing laboratory has been established under the association with department of Pharmaceutical analysis and set ready for contract research and commercial sample testing after approval with governing authorities like ISO, GLP etc.

Total 15 number of students admitted in the dept and focussing on Bio-analytical, QbD and CADD with synthesis of Heterocyclic moieties.

Department of Pharmacology


Pharmacology is the scientific discipline that, in the attempt to impart the knowledge of health and alleviate disease, studies the mechanisms by which drugs alter biological systems. The Department of Pharmacology at Sri Adichunchanagiri College of Pharmacy, B.G. Nagar, was established in the year 2014. The department offers training in pharmacology and toxicology to both undergraduate, Pharm D, and post graduate students, who may frequently undergo to the exciting research, regulatory and administrative careers in academic, industrial and healthcare provision settings. In this direction, the department of Pharmacology aims to prepare exceptional students for productive and successful careers in pharmaceutical industry, academia, research and public sectors.

The department has centralized Animal house approved by CPCSEA (Registration no: 377/PO/ReBi/S/2001/CPCSEA) for conducting experiments on Mice, Rats, Guinea Pigs, and Rabbits. The Department also involves collaborative research activities. To strengthen the department research activities, we made MOU with various CRO, Industries and some

research laboratories. In this connection we have published more than 30 research and review articles in National and International Journals. Adding the achievement to the miles stone of the department, staffs were awarded (Best Researcher award) by various agencies and also two patent was filled. The Department has conducted one workshop and one National conference.

Department of Pharmacy Practice


Department of pharmacy practices was Establishedin the year 2009 with the aim to provide Clinical Education by using evidence-based approaches to optimize the practice of pharmacy by ensuring better patient care and pharmaceutical services and develop skilled and competitive pharmacy leaders in healthcare system for future needs by utilizing emerging technologies of advanced learning.Department also identifies and develops interprofessional programs and services for better patient care and skill development in the budding clinical pharmacists.

The department of Pharmacy Practices is actively involved in various clinical researches in collaboration with industries and hospitals from various parts of India. The department have MoU with two corporate multispecialty hospitals (Ruby General Hospital, Kolkata and Healthcare Global Enterprises Ltd (HCG) Hospital, Bengaluru).

The department has initiated Academia –industry collaborations with Samrud Foundation for Health and Research, Bangalore. Currently department is highly engaged with three Consultancy projects (Clinical Trials) worth of Rs.0.38 crores and has also received ACU grants worth of Rs. 0.97 crores. Department is constantly working on collaborative research, community services and patient health with their

highly competent staffs; currently six Ph.D., and thirty-one interns and five post graduates are perusing their degrees .

Department of Pharmacognosy and

Phytochemistry


Since the establishment of the college dept of Pharmacognosy exists as it is one of the core subjects. The subject deals about the holistic approach to overcome the health care issues through the ancient and traditional knowledge. Pharmacognosy also provides scientific evidences behind the utilization of plants for treating various ailments from which people around the world are suffering from.

The main focus of the department is to inculcate the students with extensive knowledge about the herbal drugs, nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, etc. derived from nature. Updating student’s knowledge about the history of the herbal drugs, their cultivation, processing, commercial utilization, etc. The department also undertakes projects related to the exploitation of traditionally employed drugs for providing scientific background. Establishing fingerprint for the plant materials, extracts and their formulations required for the standardization of quality control of the herbal drugs.

Currently the department is having 04 PhD students who are actively researching in the area of natural drugs.

Clinical Research Centre (CRC) under the Department of Pharmacy Practice, was constituted in AH & RC in the year 2019. The Centre is located at Adichunchanagiri Hospital & Research Centre with eminent infrastructure facilities. The Centre owns a well-furnished and established office with biometric-access enabled Drug Storage area and Archival Room under 24/7 CCTV Surveillance. The Centre aims to responsibly grow research and scientific innovation to improve patient care and to provide a unique opportunity to have substantial impact.

The Centre is headed by Dr. B. Ramesh, Managing Director, Clinical Trials, AH & RC and Dr. Rajesh Venkataraman, Head, Clinical Trials, AH & RC. Ms.G Devi works as the Senior Clinical Research Coordinator and plays a major part in the running of the Centre. Around 10 Junior Clinical Research Coordinators and 01, Public Relation Officer (PRO) also works with the team and renders excellent services towards the success of the Research Centre. The Team strive to advance and change the standard of care by leveraging discovery and innovation.

Clinical Research Centre

(CRC)

The research performed at this Centre is accomplished by experienced investigators and professional medical staff. Patient safety and explicit adherence to study protocols are of paramount importance at the Clinical Research Centre.

The CRC brings scientific discovery to the realm of patient care by supporting patients, volunteers and researchers who participate in clinical trials and other forms of clinical research.The Research Centre has signed MOUs with various Consultancies, Organizations and Labs aiming for rendering quality services for the conduct of Research Activities.

The Clinical Research Centre, AH& RC is all set to take a deep-dive into the likely future of clinical trials, based on three successive waves of near, next and horizon. The CRC has successfully completed various clinical trials worth of Rs. 0.34 crores in the year 2019-20 and currently various projects are under way which worth around Rs 0.35 crores in this year 2020-21.

Department of Library and Information

Centre

It is a Temple of Knowledge and providing relevant Information in the form of Science books, journals, e-resources and useful websites. Department of library and information center was established in the year 1982. The aim of the departments is to acquire, organize and provide access to various kinds of information sources including books, journals, thesis, etc both in print and electronic forms and provide excellent IT based information services and be partner in the pursuit of academic excellence by varsity students, researchers and faculty. To collaborate with other institutions at local, regional, national and international levels for mutually beneficial resource sharing and to maximize the efficiency of library staff, through continuous training and promotion. The Department library is having 18,500 of documents includes text books, M. Pharm dissertations, Project reports, etc. The Department library comprised of more than 10000 Books / Volumes, more than 1500 titles, near about 80 CD’s and bulk range of national and international journals.

Digital library/Information center holds more than 2500 E Books, more tha 200 post graduates dissertations and PhD thesis along with the online access of Micromedex Drugdex system - online & Lexicom online Drug Index etc. more than 250 e-journals are been accessed by the students and faculties.

National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in 1969, is central schemes being operated by Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India and aimed at developing student’s personality through community service. The NSS unit emphasize the motto “Not me, but you”. Motto reflects the selfless service which means putting the need of other person and community first than our own.

Since inception of the INSSU in the year 2012 the number of student’s strength increased to several hundred till date. The INSSU, work under Mr Ravindra, Assistant Professor and Programme Officer (PO), who plays a pivotal role as an organizer, coordinator, supervisor, administrator and public relations person for the NSS unit.

The INSSU has two types of programmes, viz., (a) Regular activities and (b) Special Camping programmes. Under the “Regular Activities”, students are expected to work as volunteers for a continuous period of two years, rendering community service for a minimum of 120 hours per annum. Under Special Camping Programme, a camp of 07 days’ is conducted every year in the adopted area on a specific theme. Each student volunteer is required to participate in at least one Special Camp over 2-year period. The nature of activities taken up under NSS continues to evolve in response to the needs of the community.

Institutional National Service Scheme Unit

(INSSU)

An illustrative list of some of the activities being carried out by INSSU during the year 2019-20 is as follows:

• Education: Pre-school education, continuing education of school drop-outs, consumer awareness, programmes on eradication of social evils, etc.

• Health, Family Welfare and Nutrition: immunization, blood donation, health education, AIDS awareness, population education and family welfare programmes, working with people in nutrition programmes, provision of safe drinking water, life skill education.

• Environment Conservation: plantation of trees and their preservation/ upkeep, cleaning and maintenance of streets drains etc., construction of sanitary latrines, watershed management, soil conservation, etc.

• Social Service Programmes: Work in hospitals, institutions for disabled persons, orphanages, old-age homes, women welfare institutions, etc.

• Programmes for improving Status of Women: awareness generation reg. women’s rights, creating awareness among women regarding, how they can contribute to the social and economic wellbeing of the community, imparting skill training to women wherever possible.

Institutional Sports and Cultural Unit

(ISCU)

With the changing trend it has noticed a major difference in the every field. Students don’t want to be bookworms; they look for other options that could help them in the future. Besides, this in this high tech world, every student wants to acquire knowledge in every field to stay updated. Co-circular activities play a vital role in the life of students. By kipping in mind, ISCU was established in the year 1992 with the motto of grass development of students via physical and mental health. Each year ISCU organized various Cultural activities with tremeudous enthusiasm with cooperation with students and faculty members. The diversity of Cultural activities is extra ordinary and number of students, in this unit, had represented of national, zonal and state level Cultural events. We have fully equipped Cultural cell for students. Continuous encouragement is given to students to participate & perform in various activities. College has raised a special auditorium hall and amphitheater built as per convenience to the activities and student friendly. This unit tirelessly provide facilities for the Cultural activities & events like folk dance, folk orchestra, street play, one act play, skit, elocution, group song, vocal & classical singing, rangoli, flower arrangement, duate dance, solo dance, poetry recital, group dance, debate, quiz,

on the spot painting, cartooning, spot photography, mono-acting competition etc.

Sports are one of the important aspects of the educational programme of SACCP. It is a way of life for the student’s health and fitness and those looking for professional star status. The Institutional Sports unit is well equipped with modern infrastructure and conducts activities like Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Cricket, Handball, Softball, Judo, Football, Netball, Chess, Carrom, Athletics, Yoga, Kho-Kho, Kabbadi, etc. The Campus is well equipped with modern infrastructure for sports activities. Due to COVID pandemic the major grams and sports were not been held because of non physical presence of students in campus.

Department of Pharmacy Practice, conducted 4 day’s Health Education Program under supervision of Mr. Sathish Kumar B.P, Associate Professor, deferment of Pharmacy Practices, with V Pharm D students on 3rd, 9th, 10th and 11th Mar 2020. The localities were ACU adopted villages like Bhrammadevaralli, Konanuru, B Shettihalli, Samakahalli, under Nagamangala (Tq), Mandya district.

The aim of the programme was to spread awareness about the Respiratory Diseases and their Risk Factors. During this Community based Educational program, Students visited door to door and monitor the Peoples who are using instruments like Pulse Oximetry, Peak expiratory flow meter and simultaneously demonstrated the techniques of proper usage of inhalers and nebulizers. They highlighted about healthy respiratory system and distributed pamphlets conferring the importance of maintaining the normal Respiratory Health during the progremme. The interaction with the villager’s during the program provided a kind of social responsibilities and confidence among the Students.

Department of Pharmacy Practice in Association with Department of OBG, AH & RC organized International Women’s Day celebration on 12th March, 2020 at Yuvalaya. The Theme of the event was ‘Each for Equal’.

Dr. Prof R.C.Prameela, Department of OBG, AH &RC was the Chief Guest of the programme.

Dr. B Ramesh, Dean Pharmacy and Principal, HODs of various departments, teaching & non-teaching staffs, students from all the batches attended the programme.

Dr. R.C Prameela in her address emphasized on the importance of giving equal rights and respect to the women in the society. Institutional NSS unit organized the 73rd Independence Day celebration at campus on 15th August 2020. Dr. B Ramesh, Dean Pharmacy and Principal, was the chief guest of this event and hoisted the national flag at 8AM. Department of Pharmacognosy and Phyto-chemistry had conducted a National level quiz competition on the theme of ‘’Pharma quiz: Preparatory GPAT” in the field of Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology & Microbiology. Over 800 participants were enrolled in the stipulated time of one hour. Winners were selected on the basis of fastest submission with most correct answers.

Department of Pharmacognosy and Phyto-chemistry, had organized an online nationwide questioner survey on awareness of hand sanitizers on 9th -15th August 2020 during COVID lock down. More than 1,500 responses were recorded from almost all parts of Indian states. It created an awareness and knowledge about hand sanitizes and their related uses. Anesthetic Bullet India’s first COVID vaccine

In December 2019 the Telangana police shot dead four men accused of gang raping and burning to death a veterinarian in Hyderabad. Calling their actions an encounter, the police said they had to open fire in self-defense as the four men tried to escape and begun pelting stones.

I am SHIVU SK designed this bullet which can be used in this type of situation. The bullet outer body is completely made up of rubber inside the bullet it contains a container with needle filled with anesthesia. When the bullet is fired it won’t penetrate to the body but the needle will penetrate due to the inertia of motion. By this process only the anesthesia will get injected into the body rather than the bullet. By injecting the anesthesia to the suspect it will tranquilize part of the body (foot, leg, hand) immediately and can catch hold of the suspect and continue the person with the case/jurisdiction.

India’s 1st COVID-19 Vaccine - COVAXIN”, developed by Bharat Biotech gets DCGI approval for Phase I & ll Human Clinical Trials.

Bharat Biotech has successfully developed COVAXINTM, India’s 1st vaccine candidate for COVID-19, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) - National Institute of Virology (NIV). The SARS-CoV-2 strain was isolated in NIV, Pune and transferred to Bharat Biotech. The indigenous, inactivated vaccine developed and manufactured in Bharat Biotech’s BSL-3 (Bio-Safety Level 3) High Containment facility located in Genome Valley, Hyderabad, India.

The Drug Controller General of India - CDSCO, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare granted permission to initiate Phase I & II human clinical trials after the company submitted results generated from preclinical studies, demonstrating safety and immune response. Human clinical trials are scheduled to start across India in July 2020.

Save the girl child and educate the girl child, the purpose was generating awareness as well as improving the efficiency of welfare services for women and girl child in the Indian society. Girl children were killed in the mother’s womb through proper detection techniques before birth, even when she is an infant. Approximately 8,62,320 abortions were performed in 2017, down 7% from 9,26,190 in 2014. The abortion rate in the 2017 was 13.5 abortions per 1000 women aged 15-17, down 8% from 14.6 per 1000 in 2014.

In November 2013, following the third of the 18th Central committee of the Chinese Communist Party, China announced the decision to release the one child policy. Under the new policy, families could have two children if one parent, rather than both parents, was an only child.

In human species, the ratio between males and females at “sex ratio at Birth” is often considered to be around 105. This means that at birth an average, there are 105 meals for every 100 females.

Dr Rajesh V, Professor and Head, Dept of Pharmacy practice, was invited as special gust and Resource Person in one day CPE programme held on 5th October 2019 at Dr, Karigowda College of Pharmacy, Hassan.

Dr Rajesh V also chaired a conference titled “Role of Pharmacist in Managing DM & Skill Development’ organized by Sri Adichunchanagiri College of Pharmacy, 8th January 2020.
