The Most respected, most revered and most worshipful Shriman Ayya, Honorable

members of the Managing Committee, Distinguished Chief Guest, Dr.P. Kolandaivel, Vice

Chancellor, Periyar University, Salem, the learned scholars of the teaching community,

supporting staff of administration, invited guests, Reporters from the media and my dear

students. On the eve of the 63rd College Day celebrations, we have gathered here to proudly

ponder over the great strides our premier institution has made over a period of more than half

a century, to introspect the academic and allied activities of the current academic year, to

relish our deeds collectively achieved, to cherish our contributions to the society with joy and

satisfaction and to take a pledge for rededicating ourselves to the noble task of recasting the

rural fabric of this backward district.

On this auspicious occasion, we feel that it is our prime duty to remember here with

all gratitude the founders who are the cornerstones of this College.

The Founder President Rao Bahadur Sri A. Veeriya Vandayar’s visit to Oxford and

Cambridge Universities in 1955 became a great inspiration to start this college in 1956 to

educate the rural downtrodden masses of this delta district.

The Vandayar Family donated more than 750 acres of fertile land for this college.

During their life time Rao Bahadur Shri. A. Veeriya Vandayar and his illustrious brother Shri

A.Krishnasamy Vandayar through their pioneering effort shaped this college into a temple

of learning at Poondi village of Thanjavur District.

From 1972, our beloved Secretary and Correspondent, Shri. K. Thulasiah Vandayar

has been dedicating his life to the cause of educating the poor villagers without any capitation

fee for admission or without any consideration of money for appointment.

The Autonomous status granted in 1987 is in force with 30 years of rich experience

reinforced with spotless success. The National Accreditation and Assessment Council

(NAAC) of India accredited our esteemed institution with 4 star status in 1999; A Grade in

2007 and in the re-accreditation third cycle has awarded ‘A’ Grade with 3.38 points. We have

submitted the Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) from 2013-14 to 2017-2019 to

NAAC.

As a forerunner to introduce technical education, M.B.A. Programme was started

through Sri Pushpam College of Technical Education in 2000 with affiliations from

Bharathidasan University, Trichirappalli and AICTE, New Delhi. We are proud that it has

been elevated as Research Centre offering M. Phil. and Ph. D. from this academic year.

In 2006, the Golden Jubilee was celebrated and the then Honorable President of

India Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam graced the occasion and inaugurated the scheme Poondi

Pura (Provision of Urban Facilities in Rural Areas).

In memory of the Golden Jubilee year, an institute under the name SPIVET (Sri

Pushpam Institute of Vocational Education and Training) was established at Thanjavur to

promote vocational education and continuing education.

Our institution is firmly standing with sprawling roots of culture and tradition and all

the same the branches of modernity are waving their leaves atop. Our college is poised for a

giant leap in higher education and research, in the years to come, with globalization of higher

education to the forefront in our thoughts and with the calculated futuristic, untiring

endeavours.

By virtue of my privilege as the Head of the Institution, I indeed feel the honour of

presenting the College Annual Report which highlights our various activities and

achievements during the academic year 2018-2019.

Programmes of Study

The college started in 1956 with only two departments, 11 students and 3 teachers in

the bungalow of Vandayars at Poondi, today stands in a sprawling 85 acres of land and

50,000 sq. mts. of built up area, and functions with 18 departments, 8500 students

including 4500 girls and 329 faculty members of which 120 being Ph.D. holders. The -

strength of supportive staff of Non-Teaching cadre is 141.

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)

63rd College Day Report, 2019

A. Veeriya Vandayar Memorial Sri Pushpam College, Poondi Page 5

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) meets regularly every month to

discuss the development activities and to oversee the execution of the decisions taken. It may

be relevant to cite here a few developments born out of the activities of the IQAC.

An interdisciplinary Research Journal with ISSN Number entitled TULASI

(Transactions and Ultimatum of Linguistics, Arts and Scientific Innovations) is

published biannually.

An Orientation Course for Freshers was conducted on 29 & 30th Dec. 2019 for

Freshers totalling 50 in number. With Research Advisory Committee, IQAC organized a

Workshop on Research Methodology, Scientific Writing and Statistical Data Analysis twice

on 05, 06 October and on 15 February 2019.

As our institution has been declared the NAAC-Mentor for 10 other colleges in the

region, as per NAAC’s recommendation a one day Workshop on “Accreditation and

Assessment of Higher Education Institution” was conducted on 26 January 2019. Another

workshop on Swayam was conducted on 02 February 2019.

Faculty Training Programme

Both training and upgradation in knowledge area are the warp and the woof of the

internal fabric of a teacher in higher education. If one does not respond to this requirement,

he may render himself irrelevant in the campus. Many teachers have made use of the

opportunities and have undergone Orientation/Refresher Courses sponsored by Academic

Staff Colleges in various parts of the country during this academic year.

CONCLUSION

The unique and phenomenal growth of this glorious institution is all due to the

constant and keen interest shown by the Managing Committee in general and by our

beloved Secretary and Correspondent Shriman Ayya in particular. The saying Clean

Poondi, Green Poondi become true by real maintenance.

We are highly indebted to the teaching fraternity for their untiring service, to

the administrative machinery for its constant support and to the student community for

its insatiable interest and involvement in studiously building this temple of learning of

higher education and research.

I am equally delighted that 12 UGC Minor Projects, one DST major Project, 2

Seminars sanctioned by UGC and one Workshop sanctioned by ICSSR, New Delhi

have been approved by UGC this academic year. At this memorable moment, we, the

students and the members of the staff, take a pledge to dedicate ourselves

wholeheartedly to raise the standard of this esteemed institution which strives to serve

this predominantly rural and agrarian area and thereby to the nation at large.

I would like to conclude the consolidation of the details of our academic pursuits for

the year 2016-2017 with the noble thoughts of our former President of India, A. P. J.

Abdul Kalam: “My message, especially to young people is to have courage to think

differently, courage to invent, to travel the unexplored path, courage to discover the

impossible and to conquer the problems and succeed. These are great qualities that

they must work towards. This is my message to the young people.”

Let me conclude with Ayya’s words: Have an ear for good; it will work for your

ambitious bloom.

Thank you all!
