mal increment pi peace.Statistics show that after several

years of depression, the steel indus-try of this country began to improvein June. 1914, and that the outbreakOf the war and the resulting wide-

spread unsettliiiL' of commercialconditions and the contraction ofcredits suddenly ihcoked this im-

provement. When. alter a fewmonths, people realized that the shockto credit and the interruption ofnormal trade were merely tempor-ary, if violent, the effects Of the out-

break of hostilities were minimized. It was realized that this country,

with its population of 100.000.000 per.sons, bad (h,- resources, the skill andtile strength to enable it to prosperin spite of the enormous destructionof life and property in the countriesat war Confidence returned and thesteel trade continued its interruptedimprovement.

on top of the purchases necessaryto fill delayed orders for domesticneeds has come n rush of orders forsteel products for export. At presentsome blast furnaces are idle, hut fully90 per cent of the g ca-

pacity of the country is busy, whereas,in December, 1914, only II per centwas busy.

War conditions favor the Industry.Ooke and iron ore are relatively cheap, the Bteel plants are working at nearlyfull capacity and there is an Increas-ing demand for finished steel prod-ucts. In fact, the capacity of steelworks is now so nearly reached thatthis country' Is not In a position totake much more export business.

Although the steel being purchasedby belligerent countries gives the mar-ket its present stregth, the proportionfor actual use is not large, and tipproportion being made into shells inthis country is only a small percent"anc of the total output. Indeed, it isdoubtful whether the exports of steel, including that in the form of trucks, canon, shells and fire arms, shippedto belligerent countries arc at the rateOf mor,. than 5,000,000 tons a year, whereas the steel production of theUnited States in 19U was .11.000,000

tons.Internal Demand Is lleaiy.

Railroads and manufacturers of ag-

ricultural implements are buying steelmore largely than a year ago, al-

though their demands are hardly up

to normal. From August, 1914, toMay, 111!, the total number of freightears ordered by railroads in this conn, try was 11,000, From May T, 19l".to June 1, 19 la. the railroads ordered.15,000 cars, and large orders are un-

derstood to have been received fromforeign countries

The production of agricultural im-

plements is increasing, in spite of thefact that the exports for the last fiscalyear were nearly one-thir- d less thanfor the previous fiscal year. The

industry will require, to meetHome demands for its Products, moresteel than ever before.

A consideration of these figuresshow thtt, however much Kuropeanorder! may attract attention, theDeeds Of this country require nearlyall the output. Already the largestproducer of steel in the world, theUnited Slates, also is th" largest con-

sumer. This fact assures Industrialstrength.
