THIS YI.AR'S OLYMPICTEAM ItFTTFIt THAN 1908

London, July 17. Sporting Life isan article on the Olympic games saysthat for all round excellence theAmerican team must lie admitted tosurpass their 1908 team and only failed to sweep the decks by reason ofthe vast improvement in other nations, among whom, adds the paper,"wi cannot count Creat Britain. TheBritish team's showing was too badfor anything in several events. It hasbeen suggested to sein: a team to theUnited States to study the methodsof American coaches.'1

"My Idea," Bays the writer, "Is tosend the whole team."

The London morning papers commenting on England's lack of successat Stockholm, express keen disap-pointment and urge the necessity ofstrong efforts that Englishmen maybe better prepared for the BerlinOlympic because It Is certain thatCermany will exert herself to the utmost to dispute the palm with thepresent winners. At the same timethe papeis add, no disposition shouldbe shown to imitate American meth-ods in specialization, which are heldto savor of professionalism.

.Mr. Ward said that the case wascalled before. Justice Wicdeman, ofKast Vaunhn, Monday morning, butupon application for a chance of venueby the defense, and after a hearing, the local justice sent the case to FortSumner. It was charged by severalwitnesses that the Vaughn justice of

the peace had expr-sse- d his opinionfreely regarding the case and hadbeen 'in unpleasant terms Willi Moorefor some time. Mr. Ward expressedtil.: opinion that a perfectly fair hear-ing could have been obtained atVaughn, hut said that owing to the in-

flamed state of local feeling and thedivision of the citizens into hostilecamps over the question, 11 was prob-

"It is of course natural," said thedistrict attorney, "that in such a cacas this, where one prominent man waskilled by n no! her, that there should be

The association has several oldcollides entirely dependent upon It,and Is besides, compelled to care fora certain number of people who aresent here by ollu r cities, buying themtickets and getting them to theirhomes and to places where they can,In many ruses, attempt to recoverI mi n tuberculosis. Mhiiv such casesare received here, and lhe burdenupon the city is consequently great. It seems that In almost any easewhere a tuberculous person appealsfor aid, the authorities of tile citywhere the person lives gives him, orher, a ticket and sends them along tosome of the western towns, wherethey are thrown upon the communityto support themselves as best theymay, often at the expense of the citi-

zens. The practice is much deplored, but

as the people gel here, It is ieeniedmost economical and expedient inmany instances to send Ihem home ol-

io some other place where they mayhave a chance in g, along. Th'stakes money, mosi of which comesfrom the Henevolent association. Theladies last night showed the mayorthat they were spin. ling from $lVa to$lll( monthly in lhe care of thepoor of the city, and he declaredafter the conference that he couldonly see thai the city was obliged toiidil something lo the allowance made, despite, the era m lied condition of lisUna m i's.

The matter will come up before tincity council ul its meeting tonight, when it seems likely that an additlonal allowance will be made.
