If you’ve been in the trucking business for any length of time, you know that it is impor-tant to be prepared for any economic cycle.

While the cost of diesel fuel may be favorable today, there is no long-term certainty that prices will remain low. What is certain though is that it’s probably your largest variable op-erating cost. At Eaton, we are committed to providing your fl eets with transmission tech-nologies designed to lower your operating costs and improve productivity and safety no matter the economic tailwinds or headwinds.

For example, our new Eaton Procision 7-Speed dual clutch transmission can reduce your overall operating costs by delivering up to 10% fuel effi ciency gains, and also lowering maintenance costs (pages 6 & 7). Depending on truck application, driver prefer-ence or experience level, Eaton is the indus-try leader in both manual and automated transmission systems (pages 8 & 9).

For C&G Hauling, the Eaton UltraShift PLUS automated transmission was an ideal fi t for their heavy payloads in extreme weather conditions. “Our drivers love the transmis-sions,” reports fl eet manager, Frank Nacca-rato. “They can sit back and drive the trucks without having to worry about shifting,” (pages 10 & 11).

Tribe Transporta-tion and Mabe Trucking have experienced signifi cant fuel effi ciency gains by incorporating the latest Eaton trans-mission technol-ogy. “We’ve seen a 2 mpg improvement on our newest trucks,” says Tribe’s Matt Handte. Similarly, Butch Mabe says, “We’re saving between $400 and $500 a month for each truck.”

Like you, we appreciate all that comes with a robust economy and predictable variable costs. However, as your business partner, we have a responsibility to continue developing innovative, technology-based solutions to help maximize your bottom line in any eco-nomic cycle – and that’s a promise.

When it comes to improving fuel effi ciency, fl eets are always looking for a competitive advantage. The Eaton Fuller Advantage™ Series and UltraShift® PLUS automated transmis-sions have been a real eye opener for many fl eet owners when it comes to performance and fuel savings.

For Gainesville, Ga.-based Tribe Transportation — with 200 trucks and plans to increase to 500 trucks by 2017 — every fractional improvement in fuel economy can mean signifi cant savings.

Since the company upgraded to the new-est aerodynamic Kenworth T680 trucks with PACCAR MX-13 engines driven through Eaton UltraShift PLUS automated transmis-sions, it’s seen a jump in fuel economy from the mid-6s to 7.8 to 8.0 mpg.

“We like new technology and the Eaton automated transmission has been very good for us,” says Matt Handte, executive vice president at Tribe. “We’ve seen close to a 2 mpg improvement from our last equipment to our newest trucks with automatics.”

Impressive fuel savings

Eden, N.C.-based Mabe Trucking — with 170 trucks traveling more than 20 million miles annually — has experienced surprisingly similar results.

“It’s hard to believe, but in the last 10

years, we’ve moved from 5.7 mpg to 7.7 mpg,” says President and Owner Butch Mabe. “For any truck operator, those numbers are huge when you consider how much we spend on fuel.”

Mabe Trucking is about as fuel-effi cient as a fl eet can get. The company last year purchased aerodynamic Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks powered by the PACCAR MX-13 engine and inte-grated with the Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed automatic automated trans-mission, and saw impressive gains.

The biggest contribu-tors to the trucks’ im-proved fuel effi ciency are its Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed automated transmis-sion, wide-base tires, special factory-installed aerodynamic package and 6x2 axles. “With the new trucks, we’ve already moved up to 7.7 mpg, or six-tenths

more than the same trucks in a 6x4 confi guration,” says Mabe. In addition to fuel savings, Mabe calculates the price and maintenance difference be-tween his older models and the new trucks with Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed automatic transmissions. “We’re saving between $400 and $500 a month for each truck.”

How does that compare in fuel savings to Tribe Transportation’s driver-team trucks that average about 250,000 miles a year? Each new truck with Eaton UltraShift PLUS is saving the company about $34,000 a year in fuel, according to Handte. The

company added 60 new aerodynamic trucks with UltraShift PLUS last year, and plans to add 70 to 80 more trucks each year until the fl eet reaches 500. Future truck orders are specifi ed with the new Eaton Fuller Advantage Series.

Drivers love automated transmissions, once they try them

“Our biggest growth fl eet is our husband-and-wife teams,” says Handte. “For the female driver, their preference is overwhelmingly auto-matic. That’s been a huge win for us in attracting good husband and wife teams.”

Convincing Tribe’s senior drivers about automatics was a bit more challeng-ing. “It was a behavior change for them,” says Handte. ‘They were all professional manual drivers and didn’t want to even try an automated transmission. Our point to them was, just get in and try it. Well, 99.9 percent of them, by the time they crossed the county line, called in to say we’d never get them out of the new truck. Once they tried it, they liked it. And once word got out to the other drivers, they all jumped onboard.”

Initially, Butch Mabe had similar con-cerns about putting automatics in his fl eet. “Many of my seasoned drivers said they didn’t want an automatic,” he says. “But what I’ve learned, once they

try an automatic, they love it. In traffic, at the end of the day, they say they feel much better. They’re not as tired from shifting gears all day long. They’re more relaxed. We feel like it’s safer because they have both hands on the wheel not having to shift gears.”

“Safety is a huge emphasis for us, too,” says Handte. “Not only did we add the automated transmission in our new trucks, but we added all disc brakes, stability control and collision avoidance radar to every one of our units. When you think of all the things that drivers have to do between watching traffic in front and shifting and checking mirrors and changing lanes, with Eaton automated transmis-sions, now they have both hands on the wheel, with more focus and less activity in the driver’s seat. All that helps improve safety.”

“I see a lot of advantage to operating an automatic,” says Mabe. “Automatics and manuals are both good transmis-sions, but there’s a fuel advantage to the automatics because of more ef-ficient shifting, which prevents clutch wear down the road. So we don’t have to replace the clutch because it lasts longer.”

Comfort, safety and performance

Always looking for opportunities to enhance fuel efficiency, driver comfort, safety and performance, Mabe has ex-perimented over the years with many different truck packages. “We’ve been in business for 27 years and have seen a lot of changes,” he says. “We need to be prepared for the future and the changes it brings.”

Now, Mabe says, he’s found the right team to help him. “As far as program-ming the automated transmissions and trying different things for fuel efficiency and performance, Eaton’s Roadranger in North Carolina has been great to work with,” he says. “It’s been a huge benefit to us having a knowledgeable guy like Tim Truesdell come and work directly with our fleet. Along with Matt Wray, my truck sales-man at MHC Kenworth – Greensboro, together, those guys have put together a great package. Tim is hands on and has really been part of the success of our new equipment and this new age going forward.”

While Mabe Trucking used to be 100

percent manual transmissions, today, many of its trucks have the Eaton

Fuller Advantage Series 10-speed automated transmis-sion. “Soon we’ll be 80 percent automated and 20 percent manuals,” Mabe says. “That’s where I feel like we’re headed because we

want drivers to feel more comfort-able and be able to adapt. I believe

automatics bring that.”

Both Mabe Trucking and Tribe Transpor-tation see clearly the road ahead — a new generation of drivers operat-ing fuel-efficient trucks loaded with technologies designed to enhance per-formance, safety and driver comfort. During this transitional time, these fleets are getting ahead of the curve in order to lead the trucking industry in the years ahead.

TRIBE TRANSPORTATION DRIVERS “FEEL” THE DIFFERENCE

The Kenworth T680 with the Eaton UltraShift PLUS automated transmission has re-energized J.B. Farrow. The 22-year driving veteran says his new truck has made a world of difference when it comes to how he feels at the end of the day. “Energy has returned, and that’s contributed to my better overall health,” he says. “I’ve dropped 40 pounds in the four months I’ve been driving the new truck. I used to be so tired from driving that when my shift was over, I’d be too tired to walk. I would just grab a bite to eat, and go to bed. But driving fatigue went away when I started driving the T680 with automated transmis-sion. It drives like a car. I felt good when my driving was over for the day so I started walking and that, coupled with giving up soft drinks, has helped me drop 40 pounds in four months.”

John Schultz, a veteran driver of 15 years, also has found a big dif-ference in his new truck with Eaton UltraShift PLUS. “It drives like a Cadillac,” he says. “ The automated transmission is great — it really makes it feel like you’re driving a large car. There is so much less fatigue driving a truck that feels like a car.”

Getting behind the wheel of a 16-ton vehicle for the fi rst time can be in-timidating, especially for medium-duty drivers who typically are not profes-sional drivers. Many of them manage other, non-driving related responsibili-ties such as selling products, custom-er relations, hand-wheeling deliveries through offi ces and retail centers, accounting, computer processing and invoicing. So when they get behind the wheel, they need all the help they can get.

Driver confi dence

Even the most inexperienced driver can get behind the wheel of a Proci-sion dual-clutch transmission (DCT) vehicle and drive with confi dence. Procision DCT lets drivers gain confi -dence quickly. A number of features built into Procision DCT are designed to help the driver maintain control in all situations.

With Procision, as a driver approaches a downhill grade, the truck maintains its control, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering rather than slowing down the vehicle. The Hill Helper function helps prevent rollback on hills and assists during take off.

Optional and adjustable, Hill Helper technology prevents roll back or roll forward for up to three seconds while on grades for a controlled launch. Additionally, tap-down shifting lets drivers down shift by simply touching the brake. Drivers don’t even have to take their hands off the wheel. These exclusive features can be turned on and off using Eaton’s ServiceRanger software if desired.

Operating a truck with Procision is like driving a car. Thanks to Eaton’s dual clutch technology, you can’t feel the shifts. A dual clutch transmission combines the gear effi ciency of a manual with the smooth shifting of an automatic. It employs two clutches and actuators: one performs shifts out of the odd-numbered gears while the other takes care of the even-num-bered shifts. This allows one clutch to stay engaged at all times, and eliminates the power interruption that typically occurs when an automated manual transmission changes gears. A DCT with a wider gear spread allows the gears to engage more quickly than a torque converter automatic, provid-ing a better overall driving experience.

Drivers love the smooth operation. Fleet managers appreciate the fuel savings.

Game changing fuel savings

Eaton’s Procision 7-speed DCT deliv-ers 8 to 10 percent better fuel econo-my than a torque converter automatic in two ways. First, there is no fuel loss during gear changes. For a DCT, fuel no longer needs to be used dur-ing gear changes since one clutch is engaged at all times. Secondly, quicker gear engagement and smoother shift-ing results in greater fuel economy. The result is smooth, continuous and fuel-effi cient delivery of torque to the wheels.

For fl eets operating in city driving, Procision DCT is a game changer. The fuel economy benefi ts in low-speed, stop-n-go driving can be signifi cant. And while better fuel economy helps reduce the overall cost of ownership,

The all-new Eaton Procision™ 7-speed dual-clutch transmission delivers on many levels

lower maintenance costs help save even more money. Procision DCT service intervals are 150,000 miles, or four years, thanks to the use of a new synthetic transmission fl uid and a long-life fi lter. Better fuel economy and lower maintenance costs deliver lower total cost of ownership during the truck’s life cycle over torque converter automatics.

Smart

The medium duty market is extremely diversifi ed with more than 200 ap-plications ranging from pick-up-and-delivery to fi re-and-rescue to school buses. Procision DCT is engineered to improve the driving experience for medium duty drivers with integrated

features like Creep Mode and PTO capability.

The optimized Urge to Move and Creep Mode provide an excellent balance of effi ciency and perfor-mance. Appealing to most medium duty applications is the low speed at which the creep function operates in both forward and reverse. Customers delivering to loading docks, whether it’s on a grade or in a tight space, want their drivers backing up at the most controlled and slowest possible speed. Procision’s Creep Mode provides best-in-class low-speed maneuverability.

Three standard PTO openings are engineered into every Procision DCT. This fl exibility lets customers spec the base model transmission they want today while allowing them to upgrade later. PTO functionality can be enabled by dealerships after the purchase, enhancing value to both fi rst owners and the secondary market.

The Eaton Fuller Advantage Series Manual 10-Speed Transmission is the most effi cient heavy-duty manual transmission available. As the standard manual transmission spec for many OEMs, Eaton manu-al transmissions have consistently been the No. #1 choice of fl eets in North America. There’s much to love about Eaton Fuller Advantage manual transmissions. For ex-ample, the advanced design trims weight without sacrifi cing strength by replacing cast iron with alumi-num on the shift bar housing, rear cover and range cylinder. And Pre-cision Lubrication technology uses less oil and eliminates the need for a transmission cooler.

C&G Haulage Ltd., in Ajax, Ontario, specializes in heavy hauling of aggregates for concrete and asphalt yards. The company operates a fl eet of 15 trucks, mostly Peterbilt and International tri-axle tractors with tri-axle pony pup trail-ers. The rigs travel routes averaging between 600 to 800 kilometers (375 to 500 miles) a day carrying massive pay-loads — the maximum weight allowed — of 63,000 kilograms (139,000 pounds).

Several years ago, Eaton and the Roadranger fi eld service organization asked C&G Haul-age to test a new lineup of au-tomated transmissions. “They selected us because of the weight we haul,” says Owner Guido Naccarato. “We were one of the earliest fl eets to run the new transmission.”

That early prototype was an Eaton UltraShift® PLUS MXP (Multipurpose Extreme Perfor-mance) 18-speed automated manual transmission. Heavy payloads and the extreme weather conditions of Ontario de-mand maximum reliability, durability and performance. The Eaton UltraShift PLUS MXP proved it was up to the task.

Real world performance

MXP transmissions are part of the Eaton UltraShift PLUS Performance Series, all of which employ grade sensing, weight computation and driver throttle commands to make intelligent shift decisions for optimum performance. The fully automated, two-pedal transmissions may be paired with the highest torque engines available in the trucking industry.

Built upon the highly popular Eaton Fuller manual transmis-sion platform, Eaton UltraShift PLUS automated transmis-sions deliver tailored performance and effi ciency for the toughest applications. All launches and shifts are automated with the use of a self-adjusting electronic actuator for fast,

smooth engagements. Intel-ligent shift selection software uses changes in grade, weight and throttle to calculate the most effi cient and effective shift points. For vocational and heavy haul fl eets, UltraShift PLUS can be specifi ed with 2-speed axle software for enhanced gear reduction to maximize on-off road capa-bilities, providing a cost-saving alternative to torque converter automatic transmissions which typically require additional gear boxes.

Proven reliable, durable

That initial UltraShift PLUS MXP is still operating at C&G and has accumulated more than 1.2 million miles of service. Says Guido, “Right after the testing was over, which took about two years, they (Eaton and the Roadranger organi-zation) said, ‘Sir your warranty starts today!’ Since then we have had very few issues, and the Eaton people have treated us great.”

Frank and Guido have since ordered a second and third Eaton UltraShift PLUS MXP 18-speed automated manual transmission that have been performing equally well, and have spec’d the same transmissions on a new truck order for fi ve International pony pups. They agree that ease of

operation and reduced wear and tear on their vehicles are two of the transmissions’ fi ner attributes.

“Our drivers love the transmissions,” says Frank, “because they can sit back and drive the trucks without having to worry about shifting. It is much easier going down the road.”

Adds Guido, “On the performance side, the transmission shifts when it needs to shift. That translates into good fuel consumption, especially with the newer models. So it looks like they are getting better and better.

“I drove a truck for more than 35 years and when I fi rst drove the UltraShift PLUS, I thought it was good. Now I say, hey, it’s really good.”

Guido’s just as enthusiastic in his praise of the Eaton sales and service representatives who have been support-ing him over the years. “I think the rest of the industry, whether it’s engines or other transmissions, needs to follow suit and do what the Eaton people are doing,” says Guido. “We think very highly of them. Because of that, I would recommend to anyone that they buy the UltraShift PLUS transmissions.”

The Performance Series also includes the 13-speed Multipurpose Highway Performance (MHP) transmission. For most applications, a fi ve-year, 500,000-mile transmis-sion warranty and three-year, 350,000-mile clutch warranty comes with the UltraShift PLUS Performance Series.

At C&G Haulage Ltd., in Ajax, Ontario, grandmas, grandpas, sons, daughters, grandsons and grand-daughters make certain all customers are treated like they’re relatives.

The company was founded in 1975 by Grandpa Guido and Grandma Connie Naccarato, and has en-joyed good growth over the years. Their son, Frank, is the fl eet manager and his sister, Mary, takes care of dispatching and bookkeeping. Grandsons Guido, Jr., and Andrew are helping out with maintenance and mechanical responsibilities, while granddaugh-ters Sara and Melissa stop by occasionally to help out when needed.

C&G has 15 additional employees. “They’re not related but we still try to treat them like family,”

says the senior Guido. Another 35 independent bro-kers are regularly employed to service the greater Toronto area.

“We take very good care of our customers,” adds Guido. “When I tell them we’re going to do a job, the job gets done and done right.”

Glider kits are essentially new trucks built around exist-ing powertrains. Glider kit trucks typically cost up to 25 percent less than a truck made by an original equipment manufacturer.

Last year, Fitzgerald Truck Sales, Byrdstown, Tenn., manufactured about 2,000 Glider kit trucks. The largest manufacturer of commercial trucks made from glider kits in the U.S., the company makes old trucks new again with the help of Eaton factory-remanufactured transmissions.

“We are very particular when it comes to selecting ven-dors,” says David Dyer, a 44-year trucking industry veteran

and Fitzgerald purchasing manager, parts manager and warranty administrator. That selection is 100 percent genu-ine Eaton when purchasing transmissions and clutches.

The Eaton Remanufacturing Process

“Each transmission goes through a complete cleaning and inspec-tion process,” says Eaton’s NAFTA Aftermarket Marketing Manager Bill Fouch, speaking about Eaton’s factory

remanufacturing process. “We completely disassemble the transmission cores. We have some pretty stringent criteria as we go through all the pieces and parts to determine what can and cannot be reused.

“Once we make those determinations, we also look at the latest design improvements that have been made to the product since the time that particular core was manufac-tured, and we bring it up to the latest design levels,” says Fouch. “And we run every unit across the dynamometer to make sure there are no noise issues, it’s able to shift through all the gears and perform as expected.”

Eaton Remanufacturer’s Guarantee

Fitzgerald’s Dyer bundles his Eaton factory remanufac-tured transmissions with an Advantage Series clutch and Roadranger-approved lubricant, so he qualifies for Eaton’s 3-year/unlimited miles warranty. An Eaton remanufactured transmission is made exclusively with genuine Eaton parts and has more new parts than any competitive rebuild.

“Eaton is definitely helping Fitzgerald remain profitable and very much helping us maintain a healthy bottom line,” says Dyer. “I get Eaton transmissions galore in here, and every one is pretty much bullet proof in terms of durability.”

Eaton manual transmissions are the only transmission anyone will ever see on a glider kit made by Fitzgerald Truck Sales. “We would never even consider changing,” says Dyer. “You cannot buy a product in the market that is better than Eaton.” Fouch couldn’t agree more. “One thing is sure,” Fouch says. “When you buy an Eaton factory reman, you know what you’re getting. It’s the next best thing to a new transmission.”

Next best thing to new

For manufacturer of trucks made from Glider kits, Eaton remanufactured transmissions make all the difference

Better quality, better process, better warranty

What’s the difference between remanufactured and rebuilt transmissions? Eaton genuine remanufac-tured transmissions are restored to like-new condi-tion and supported with a like-new warranty: two-years of coverage expandable to three years. Each transmission is disassembled, inspected, cleaned and repackaged to include the latest design im-provements, as well as tested on a dynamometer to assure quality performance. “While there are some really good rebuilders out there, you have to be very, very choosy from whom you buy,” says Eaton’s NAFTA Aftermarket Marketing Manager Bill Fouch. “Where we find problems is with rebuilders who are inconsistent,” says Fouch. “Sometimes they use genuine parts, sometimes they don’t. Some rebuilders may test the product before it’s sold, some don’t. You’re really not sure what you’re getting. It comes back to consistency. Eaton’s re-manufacturing operations are very process driven. You’re going to get the same high quality process over and over and over again.”

SOLO ADVANTAGE™ SELF-ADJUSTING CLUTCH

The Solo Advantage Self-Adjusting Clutch

features exclusive technology that keeps the

clutch in constant adjustment. It also features

spring-loaded cams that adjust for proper

clearance with every disengagement.

If your truck has hydraulic linkage,

Solo is the only way to go. If you replace a truck with hydraulic linkage with anything other than

a Solo Advantage, it is diffi cult for the driver to detect the need for

adjustment. A clutch operating out of adjustment creates excess heat

and friction, which diminish clutch life. If unaddressed, this results in

damage to the clutch and hydraulic release system components.

The reliability of a new clutch at the price point you need. Features aftermarket specific facings, a visible wear indicator and a 25,000-mile lube interval for linehaul applications.

Better: EverTough™ by Eaton

Industry-leading vibration dampening along with Eaton proprietary friction material to protect the driveline and extend service life. Advantage Series release bearing extends lube interval to 50k in linehaul applications.
