continuing education via podcast. It is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

ConveyMD includes free podcasts but also the work of several medical associa-tions working with West and Donoghue to produce content for sale.

“A listener will select that podcast, purchase it in the app, and listen to it,” Donoghue said.

“We have image capabilities so they can be viewing a presentation, X-rays, or charts, graphs, illustrations while they are listening, which is something you cannot do on open platforms.”

At the end of the session, listeners are cued to take a unit quiz, which is submit-ted via the app for credit to their respec-tive medical association.

The startup’s largest funder is MC Ven-ture Partners, which is also incubating it at its Downtown offices, 17 W. Pontotoc.

Donoghue, former senior executive of global marketing for Smith + Nephew’s orthopedic division, and West, who has years of experience in pharmaceutical

and biotech leadership, have watched health care workers struggle to find time for continuing education.

“Podcast education allows clinicians to stay up to date on their medical edu-cation when it fits their schedule, not the other way around,” West said.

The pandemic compounded the pre-mium on time, Donoghue says.

It also dramatically shifted delivery modes for continuing education.

“If you look at data from ACCME (Ac-creditation Council for Continuing Medi-cal Education) annual reports, it’s obvious there has been a radical shift from 2018-19 — that’s the pandemic — to 2020, roughly 70% of all CME, post-pandemic, is coming from internet materials or virtual or live webinars,” he said. Hospital systems start-ed pushing content through their intranet portals. Online sites, such as Medscape, began offering more.

“I have used Medscape, and I like them,” says Emily Ward, a registered nurse in Memphis in training to be a nurse prac-titioner. “But their stuff is only available

on their website. And their mobile app is not terribly friendly,” she said. For years, she said, continuing education meant at-tending a conference or a presentation.

“That is really time-consuming. You can’t do it on the go. A podcast means you could listen wherever you are. That would be super-helpful,” she said. The app was developed with Lokion, a Memphis soft-ware firm.

“It was built in a native application for both iOS an Android,” said Jennifer Culotta, vice president of sales and mar-keting, “which means it was written in the operating system language of the device.”

That will be important later on, she said, as Convey Pro expands. “Because the application was written entirely from scratch for them, they have total control over that code base as they grow into new markets and add new functionality.”

Convey Pro is working with two medi-cal societies, the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society and Orthopedic Trauma Association, to produce premium content for sale. It intends to add more. “In

our case, we wanted to prove that clini-cians would listen to medical podcasts if the content came from a trusted source,” West said.

“Our first two association partners have recorded more than 100 episodes with 70,000 downloads in the last year, and we believe that podcast education is the wave of the future.” The firm now has several units in production and more to come. “We’ll collect the revenues from the sales and then share a percentage in the form of a royalty back to the content provider,” Donoghue said. “That means we are mutually incentivized to deliver amazing content on a very easy-to-use podcast platform.”

ConveyMD for now offers content only for physicians, nurse practitioners and nurses.

The plan is to cover all the disciplines in health care, and in a few years branch into other fields that require continuing education, including law and finance. “We’re just at the beginning of that jour-ney,” Donoghue said.

where they send some of their more valuable titles.

In the past few years, comic books sales have reached record highs. According to a public da-tabase that tracks comic sales, North American comic sales in 2020 surpassed $1.2 billion in combined print and digital.

“We have had record sales this year thanks to things like col lectabil ity,” Merritt said. “Comics have been exponential-ly increasing in value in recent years, but there are a variety of things that are helping that success.”

Merritt has noticed an in-crease in female readers, and in female creators. Also, there is more of a focus on diversity of characters in the industry, in-cluding more characters of color.

“It’s def initely the movies too,” Wright said. “Even people

who aren’t avid readers go to the movies and may see something that strikes a chord and makes them want to see more.”

Before the pandemic, Marvel films were routinely bringing in billions at the box office.

And while they can’t be sure how many new customers will become lifelong comic readers, Merritt and Wright are thankful for their local community, which allowed them to grow during what could have been a disas-trous time.

“Most of my customers just wanted to support local busi-nesses throughout the pandem-ic,” Wright said.

“They knew the troubles small businesses were having, mom-and-pop shops versus the big-box stores. They wanted to spend their money and do every-thing they could to make sure lo-cal businesses survived.”

About 800 runners gathered at Tiger Lane on Labor Day morning for a 5K ben-efitting children in need of a miracle.

The annual Chick-fil-A 5K celebrated its 18th year Monday, Sept. 6, with a run through Cooper-Young supporting My Town Miracles, a Collierville-based non-profit that provides financial assistance to families in need. By 6 a.m., runners began lining up outside Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium for the race, which partners each year with a local foundation. “We exist to elevate children out of insecurity and in-stability,” My Town Miracles executive di-rector Brandon Artiles said. “We do that by providing access to financial material and relational resources.”

Most recently, My Town Miracles part-nered with Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital to purchase adaptive physical therapy bikes for patients in need.

“The devices are life-changing for these kids,” Artiles said, “but they’re expensive

because they are built for each child and each child’s condition.”

Some of those children were present Monday morning as onlookers, Chick-fil-A cow mascots and members of the the Uni-versity of Memphis Spirit Squad cheered runners as they gathered at the starting line. Beginning at Tiger Lane, runners ex-ited south onto Southern Avenue, ran west to Cooper Street, north to Elzey Avenue and eventually circled back to East Parkway.

As of Monday morning, My Town Mir-acles had raised more than $6,500 toward its $10,000 goal.

Artiles, who was a news anchor with ABC Local 24 News before joining My Town Miracles, said moving from covering the news to working with a nonprofit has been a welcome change.

“I get overwhelmed with all of the posi-tivity,” Artiles said. “The most rewarding part for me, being on this side of it, has been getting to see the thousands of people who are sacrificing to give to this city and to make it the best place it can possibly be.”

Coverage Area – Public Records Real Estate TransactionsWarranty Deeds, Trust Deeds, and other special deeds are compiled daily from the records of the Shelby County Register’s office.Warranty Deeds usually convey title to real estate from the seller to the buyer.Trust Deeds, in effect, convey a lien on the real estate from a borrower, guarantor, person or firm putting up the real estate as collateral or security for some purpose, to a lender, person or firm receiving collateral or security for some purpose. A lender is usually designated by its trustee. In many instances, the borrower is at the same time a buyer of the real estate, and is executing a purchase money mortgage. When that occurs, the Warranty Deed and Trust Deed will usually have consecutive, or nearly consecutive, instrument numbers.Other special deeds also transfer an interest in the real estate from the grantor to the grantee.
