Multipurpose Organization for Training, Health, Education and Rehabitation (MOTHER)

working in Karnataka State of India since 24 years. MOTHER believes that rural

community can develop meaningfully only if environmental sustainability and social

equity are guaranteed. So, its activities are focused to ensure conservation of soil and

water, alternative forms of livelihoods and development, assisting local people in

empowering themselves to manage their natural resources and social aspects.

By providing sustainable livelihood interventions, convergence and creation of

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

And this results in post harvest losses. To

increase the economic value of a commodity,

decentralized value addition is required

through particular production process. This

will result in minimizing the post harvest

losses as well as increased value of

commodities. And this develop rural areas

and improve the living conditions of farmers.

Hence the MOTHER is focusing on equipping

existing Farmer Producer Organizations with

semi processing machines for area dominant

agriculture commodities.

At the end of the year Corona virus is

enormously causing COVID-19 disease and

thus assassinating many people in the world.

Thousands of people in different countries

were departed and still departing. On 11th

March 2020, WHO declared Novel

Coronavirus Disease outbreak as a pandemic

and reiterated the call for countries to take

immediate actions and scale up response to

treat, detect and reduce transmission to save

people’s lives. The Government of India, is

taking proactive measures making puplic

appeal to encourage response towards

COVID-19 by maintaining social distance.

The MOTHER has planned to spread

awareness in rural areas and respond to

needy families.

"To awaken the people, it is the women who

must be awakened. Once she is on the move,

the family moves, the village moves and the

nation moves", said by Jawaharlal Nehru.

Nowadays the women either in rural or in

urban area are facing towards self-

employment to stand by their own, to earn

and to become an independent person in

society. Hence digital literacy is highly

essential for every woman to co-op with the

current status of the society. During the year

we focused on educating rural women about

handling of smartphone and internet.

India is home to the fourth largest

agriculture sector in the world. For a majority

of the country, an estimated 72% of the 1.1

billion people who live in rural India,

Agriculture is a way of life.

Lack of knowledge on technology based

cultivation practices and low bargaining

power of small and marginal farmers has

made the agriculture income inadequate.

Uncertain rains, crop failures and volatile

market rates double the difficulties.

Sometimes surplus production is the cause

of lower rate of produce in the market.

Internet saathi project team with our

President Dr.Vijayalakshmi Hebbare

during saathi graduation day

Internet saathi Program

Internet saathi is a program to improve digital

literacy among women in rural areas in India in order

to bring them online. The program is a joint

initiative of Google India and Tata trusts. India has

the second largest internet population. Among

Indian internet population women users are 1 in 3. In

rural India 1 out of 10 women uses Internet. Cultural

barriers, Lack of access and Lack of perceived value

prevent women from using the Internet. Hence to

bridge the gap the Internet saathi program focuses

on creating awareness among rural communities

about internet and its benefits. It aims to create

digital livelihood opportunities for selected women.

MOTHER involved in the program as a partner

organization for Tumkur and Ballari Districts.

Human milk collection program

WHO and UNICEF recommends, when a mother's own breast milk is not available, the alternatives are

either expressed breast milk from a donor mother or formula milk. Breastmilk bank can be a boon to

provide milk to premature babies. There are only 14 milk banks available all over India, and a very few

(4 nos.) in South India. With this notion, NeoLacta Lifesciences has started a human milk bank, to

collect, store and distribute the milk to babies who need.

MOTHER has started collecting milk from lactating women in good health in Pavagada taluk. As milk

production is more in the first 6 months of delivery, mothers who have delivered in the last 6 months

and willing to donate her excess milk can donate milk. In the year collected 20337 ml and sent to

Neolacta lab with utmost care.

The uncertainty of farm income coupled with poor economic

capacity of the tribal makes long-term investment in

agriculture very difficult. To overcome these problems, Tribal

Development Project proposes to improve the quality of life

of 508 poor tribal families through WADI (Orchard)

Development approach and other sustainable income

generating activities.

MOTHER is implementing this six years project in Kakkuppi,

Adavisuravvanahalli, Jermali and Haravadi villages of Kudligi

Taluk of Ballari District with the support of NABARD's Tribal

Development fund. During this year, Formation of community

groups, Capacity building of CLC, WADI preparatory works

such as land preparation, deep ploughing, trench cum bund,

Community activities, critical irrigation, plantation and

maintenance were taken place.

Dairy is the second major livelihood activity in rural parts of

India. Major challenges in livestock rearing is fodder

maintenance, hygienic rearing, disease management. In case

of fodder to withstand with the scarcity of fodder suitable

technologies are required. Farmers have to learn effective

utilization available resources.

Green fodder is an economic source of nutrients for the

livestock. With the limited land under fodder cultivation,

there is a need to focus to improve productivity of fodder

crops & common grazing lands and demonstrate to conserve

surplus green fodder to enhance availability during the lean

period.

MOTHER is motivating farmers through Madakari FPO to

cultivate Napier in their farm and install chaff cutters. 25

units of chaff cutters made through loan and grant support.

In the view of sustainable livelihood, MOTHER has signed an agreement with Harsita

Organization for creating digital livelihoods for rural women with the fund support of Tata

trust and technical support from FREND Organization. Sashakt Printer program focus on

creating digital livelihoods for interested women through HP all in one printers.

Study shows a person from rural india needs to travel a minimum of 5 kms to access to printing,

scanning and photocopying services. To solve for this need gap, FREND has tied up with HP to

offer subsidised printers to selected women to offer digital services in her community at a cost.

Thus creating sustainable livelihood for rural women.

The project was initiated in the month of February 2020. MOTHER selected 50 women

beneficiaries who are willing to contribute Rs.4400/- for the printer and submitted the list to

Harsita. But due to COVID-19 crisis, the transportation of printers got delayed and hence the

training of women beneficiaries postponed to coming year.

Haravadi is a small village of Kudligi Taluk having 140 families who are depending on rainfed crops. These families were facing economic hardship due to uncertain rains and dry spells. Thus, migrating towards urban areas.

Badigeri Basavaraja who emerged as a successful farmer due to Orchard d e v e l o p m e n t u n d e r N A B A R D assisted tribal development project is the hero of this story. He was selected as a beneficiary in the year of 2018. MOTHER team oriented him about tree based farming / Agro Horti f o r e s t r y m o d e l . A f t e r t h a t orientation, along with other farmers he was exposed to Rangasamudra, Pavagada taluk to show well established orchards. He was inspired by this and he stepped forward to build his own wadi (orchard). He planted Jasmine, Fig, Lemon and Mango plants along with different varieties of Coconut, Jamun and also forest species like Silver oak and Teak.

He installed sprinkles in his farm to water these plants. He and his family took care of all the plants. The growth of plants inspired other farmers and made them to step forward to grow jasmine and fig in their farms. He has become the resource person and example for other farmers. Along with this he joined with MOTHER team and helped to complete about 42 acres of wadis in his village Haravadi.

INSTITUTION BUILDING, MARKETING AND LINKAGES

For rural empowerment, it is highly required to enable farmers to enhance productivity through

efficient, cost effective and sustainable resource use and realize higher returns for their produces,

through collective action. To build a sustainable collective agriculture sector, rural economic

hubs are needed. This can be achieved by promoting and supporting member owned producer

organizations. Hence the Organization will put hands on upgrading existing FPOs into Rural

Economic Agricultural hubs with the support of funding agencies.

The goal of the program is to “create Rural Economic Agri-Cultural Hubs” to empower and enrich

economic development at Gram Panchayat Level in Rural India. The Objective of these hubs is to

transform the Grama panchayats into revenue generating activities with processing and non

processing units, Achieve self sufficiency and export of food grains, pulses, oilseeds, fruits and

vegetables and to contribute to National GDP.

To showcase the Organization’s activities and goal of REACH

program, the MOTHER team exhibited the project design in the

CSR exhibition held at Delhi on 27th and 28th Sept 2019.
