Arts participation and arts education have been associated with improved cognitive, social, and

behavioral outcomes in individuals across the lifespan: in early childhood, in adolescence and

young adulthood, and in later years. Arts education and participation leads to:

Strengthened problem-solving and critical thinking skills, adding to overall academic

achievement and school success

A sense of craftsmanship, quality task performance, and goal-setting—skills needed to

succeed in the classroom and beyond

A positive work ethic and pride in a job well done

A sense of identity and belonging

Higher levels of civic engagement and community volunteerism

Cultural vitality and communal values such as tolerance and solidarity

Self-confidence and positive self-esteem in children

Increased mental and physical health in adults

Whether bound together by geography, history, an area of interest, or some other shared

characteristic, communities benefit from arts engagement. MAC strives to facilitate art

education and citizen participation in art activities, provide a quality venue for the visual,

performing, and literary arts, promote all the arts in their richness and variety to everyone, and

support the activities of local and regional artists and art groups.

We cannot provide these services without the support of our community members. Please

contact MAC to find out how you can help maintain the arts in Manhattan!

MAC MUSIC & BIRDHOUSE CONCERT SERIES

2014-2015 THEATRE SEASON

This year’s summer theatre production was an absolute hit! The Rocky Horror

Show was very well-attended; five of the six shows were sold out, making it one of

the most successful summer performances ever for MAC. The production was

directed by Penny Cullers, MAC’s artistic director. Cast members included local

favorites Evan Tuttle, Tyler Woods, Frank Siegle, and Randy Rhoten, and MAC

production newcomers Chloe Pyle and Mark Hay. Six live bands members

accompanied the show, and Lauren Rohrer conducted and provided back-up

vocals.

Cats, also directed by Penny Cullers, followed in Rocky Horror Show’s

footsteps as tickets sold like hot cakes. Almost every performance was sold out.

The show had 22 local cast members including four young “kittens.” The

production was produced by Mary Renee Shirk and the music was directed by

Fred Burrack. This show hosted an 11-piece band in the scene shop.

Much Ado about Nothing received rave reviews from The Mercury. “The whole

show is directed with imagination and authority by Randy Rhoten, who clearly

understands how to reveal the magic that is Shakespeare’s gift to the world’s

theatergoers,” remarked Ben Nyberg. The production was performed by 20 local

cast members.

The Fox on the Fairway, directed by Kim Riley, was an insanely hilarious

comedy that had audience members laughing from start to finish. The production

was full of mistaken identities and romantic shenanigans. The cast included the

talents of local radio star Bill Pugh, Mary Renee Shirk, Bettina Boller, Randall

Baughman, Paul Knackendoffel, and Naci Peters. A seventh, unseen cast member

(“the Starter”) was voiced by the former Voice of the Wildcats, Dave Lewis.

The Mikado rounded out the season by providing a musical experience for all

ages. The comical operetta, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W.S.

Gilbert, was re-orchestrated by Fred Burrack for a bit more modern twist. This

modernized Gilbert & Sullivan operetta included the styles of rock, rockabilly, rap,

and even Japanese bubble gum pop.

It’s been a delightful year for this season of Birdhouse Acoustic Music. The season began

with Ronny Cox in September. Previously known for his acting chops in movies like Total

Recall and Robocop, Ronny entertained audiences with his whimsical stories, humor, and

Southwestern folk style. Tim and Myles Thompson, a father son duo, visited MAC next. Myles

has grown up playing music alongside his father, which was apparent in their chemistry as

musicians. The Appleseed Collective and Finnders and Youngberg wrapped up the Fall with

an American tribute. The Appleseed Collective has been described as “true Americana” music

– not bluegrass, not ragtime, but a beautiful mixture of all American music traditions.

Finnders and Youngberg represents a contemporary take on American music - classic

bluegrass, tried-and-true honky tonk, country swing and folk tales.

The spring began with a local favorite – An evening with Dr. Wayne Goins and friends: Dr.

Goins and seven of his closest musical companions, including Charles Williams from Kansas

City. This nearly sold-out show was succeeded by Pokey LaFarge – the season’s most popular

performance. Pokey’s music incorporates jazz, ragtime, country blues and much more,

providing for a truly entertaining evening. The season culminated in performances by Sally

Barris in March and John Reischman & the Jaybirds in April.

GALLERY EXHIBITS

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMMING & CLASSES

The Philip & Jeune Kirmser and Charlotte Edelman Galleries have

featured many local and regional artists this season. The season started off

with the “Rock Paper Scissor” exhibit in both galleries, featuring artwork of

Southeast MO State University Art Faculty. It was followed by the juried exhibit

“Manhattan Area Photographers Exhibit.” This year’s award winners were:

Harold Gaston, Photographer of the Year and First Place Illustrative; Jason

Banks, First Place Nature; and Terry Szel, First Place People. The 16th annual

holiday art exhibit and sale, Wrap It Up, opened in November. This annual

exhibit runs through Christmas Eve. This year’s sale was one of the most

successful sales to date.

The Kirmser Gallery housed Lindsey Yankey’s “Far and Wide” exhibit in

January/February. Lindsey Yankey is a children’s illustrator based in

Lawrence, KS. The Edelman Gallery featured several Kansas literary artists to

continue the theme of regional literary art. Next, eight Masters of Fine Arts

students held a group exhibition in the Kirmser Gallery. Margaret Haden,

resident artist at K-State, had a solo exhibit of her ceramics work in the

Edelman Gallery. Gerry Craig & Nelson Smith, Dennis Southwick, and Carolyn

Wells rounded out the spring in the galleries with a variety of works. Gerry

Craig & Nelson Smith held an exhibit together, “2X22,” a retrospective exhibit

of their relationship and their careers. Dennis Southwick exhibited his recent

“Circus” works in the Edelman Gallery. A collection of Carolyn Wells’ recent

acrylic and pastel works lined the walls in the hallway. The 2014-2015 gallery

season culminated in the MAC Oil Painting and Watercolor Studio’s exhibit

“Visions in Watercolor.”

Children’s programming at MAC brings joy and laughter to the community year

after year, and this season has been no different. The season began with “Sky

Parade: The Vaudeville Revival” on Saturday, November 22nd. Over 40 local

children participated in the second annual production of MAC’s adaptation of Babes

in Toyland! Missoula Children’s Theatre visited MAC again this year for a week-long,

intensive theatre camp in January. The week culminated in a performances of

Blackbeard the Pirate for friends and family. A total of 57 local children, grades K-

12, shared in this theatrical experience. Paul Mesner Puppets also returned to MAC

in late March. This year’s Little Red Ridinghood puppet show packed the house with

over 140 children and parents.

Overall enrollment for classes (both adult and student) have seen incredible

increases this year. There was so much interest in Group Violin this Spring that MAC

added an extra day of class to accommodate all the students. The clay studio has

been overwhelming busy with Beginning Wheel classes, First Friday sessions, and

the open clay studio. MAC’s Music Play for Early Childhood with Sarah Szopinski

classes were all waitlisted—every single age group. Barrett Scroggs taught a Drama

Therapy class entitled “Drama Tweens: Emotional Expression” - This class

specifically brought a lot of positive feedback from parents. The class urged

teenagers to use drama therapy techniques to talk about emotions and thoughts

they could not otherwise verbalize. Many parents came to the MAC office to say

thank you, as their children were much more open about certain topics.

Up Next: CAMP MAC will feature a two-week theatre camp and five one-week art

camps inspired by our favorite childhood stories. Enrollment is filling up quick, and

it’s looking to be a very exciting summer!

In March of 2015, the Manhattan Sertoma Club

donated a brand new Hearing Assistance System to

the Arts Center.

Musicals have gone so well this season that MAC will be adding

a third weekend to the 2015-2016 musical productions. MAC

has also invested in ten brand new microphones so we can

continue to provide quality productions for our audience.

It has truly been a magnificent year for the Manhattan Arts Center. MAC has grown leaps and bounds in terms of

technological advancements in sound enhancement and assistance. MAC also has a new website and will soon have a

new office. Thank you for your support throughout each of these projects — we couldn’t have accomplished it without you!

ANNUAL “ART HAPPENS” FUNDRAISER

Art Happens is a major event that has become MAC’s signature fund raiser. The

evening features well-known visual and performing artists practicing their art, with silent

and live auctions while guests enjoy wine and hors d'oeuvres. The 2014 Art Happens was

the third annual Art Happens event, and was a very successful venture.

The 2014 Art Happens featured artist was Oscar Larmer (pictured right), whose

paintings are included in the collections of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Kansas City and

the Beach Museum of Art at K-State. Additional demonstrating artists included Skyler

Harper (ceramics), Marsha Jensen (basket-weaving), Peggy Anderson (bead jewelry,

pictured above), and Jim Hodgson (glass blowing). The artists interacted with visitors

throughout the evening, demonstrating their crafts in the Philip and Jeune Kirmser and

Charlotte Edelman galleries.

Four performing artists were featured in the Grosh Performance Hall. Nora and Gordon

Lewis, playing the oboe and double bass, respectively, were the first to take the stage.

They performed several pieces together and told stories about the music and their

relationship during breaks. Penny Cullers, Artistic Director at MAC, followed the Lewis

couple with a collaborative art project (a photo of said project can be found on the cover of

this report). Cullers started with a blank canvas and asked audience members to

contribute to the painting until a cohesive picture was revealed – a MAC Man catfish. Mary

Renee Shirk, a local Master of Ceremonies favorite, culminated the performances with a

stand-up routine highlighting how the arts, and MAC, have literally saved her life. A truly inspiring presentation.

The silent auction included pieces of artwork and assorted gift packages. Auctioned items included: a

writing critique by K-State Department of English, a MAC Dinner Theatre package (Two season tickets to the

MAC theatre productions and $50 Gift Certificates to 4 Olives, Umi Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi, Colbert Hills,

and Harry’s), a hand woven basket by demonstrating artist Marsha Jensen, a gift certificate for Decadent

Double Chocolate Cake and Dipped Strawberries by Blue Sky Bakery, and a variety of other pieces.

The evening culminated in a live auction, hosted by Jay Nelson of Strecker-Nelson Gallery. Auction items

included items from the evening’s demonstrating artists, a custom portrait by Clive Fullagar, an evening of

“Jazz, Wine, & Cheese in the Gazebo” with a musical performance by Wayne Goins & Rick Smith, and a “Canvas

and Cork Private Party for 8” at Straight Upp Creative Studio in Aggieville.

In 2013, Art Happens raised over $16,000 in support of the Manhattan Arts Center. Our 2014 goal was to

raise $20,000. The 2014 Art Happens fundraiser was extremely successful. We were able to raise

approximately $26,500 through donations, sponsorships, tickets, and auction sales – some $10,000 more

than the previous year! We are very much looking forward to the 2015 Art Happens fundraising event. We hope

you are too!
