Choral Ensemble Auditions

If you plan to be a part of any of Chapman University’s vocal ensembles, auditions for all NEW and RETURNING STUDENTS will be held August 27- 29 (Thursday – Saturday) in the Choral Rehearsal Hall (Bertea Hall, Room 109) with Professor Coker. Please sign up for a time on the sign-up sheet outside the Choral Music Library (Bertea Hall, Room 126) beginning on Monday, August 17.

For the audition, voice majors should prepare one piece which best displays your voice. Please bring your sheet music; a pianist will be provided. Non-music majors and non-voice majors may simply sing “America the Beautiful” in lieu of a prepared solo. You will also be asked to sight-sing a short musical selection .

Students from all disciplines are welcome to audition for Chapman’s Choral Ensembles

If you plan to take applied voice lessons, placement auditions for all NEW students will be held August 27 & 28 in Salmon Recital Hall (Bertea Hall 100) with Dr. Rebecca Sherburn. Please sign up for a time on the sign-up sheet across from Bertea Hall 230 beginning on Monday, August 17.

All new students must also complete the Voice Registration Form that was sent to all incoming vocal music students by Dr. Sherburn. Additional forms can be obtained in the Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music Office, in Oliphant Hall, Room 101. Opera Chapman Auditions

Location: Salmon Recital Hall (Bertea Hall, Room 100) Audition: Friday, August 28: 2 – 6 p.m .

Callbacks for Opera Chapman will be held on the Chapman Auditorium stage in Memorial Hall. Saturday, August 29: 2 – 6 p.m.

Auditions for Opera Chapman will be held on Friday, August 28, in Salmon Recital Hall (Bertea Hall, Room 100) with Dr. Peter Atherton and the Opera Chapman production team — a pianist will be provided. Please prepare a song or aria in French, and if possible, an excerpt from the scenes included in the

Opera Dropbox sent to all voice students. These scenes are all from operas based on plays by William Shakespeare. An audition sign-up sheet will be posted on the Opera Chapman Announcement Board in the lobby of Bertea Hall in mid-August.

Sign up for an audition time and come prepared to play a short piano excerpt. Theory Diagnostic Examination : FIRST YEAR music majors/minors only

The Theory Diagnostic Exam is required for all incoming First Year students, and administered to determine whether or not a student should begin the theory sequence in MUS 098 Rudiments of Music, or MUS 133 Theory I and MUS 135 Aural Skills I. Theory Placement Examination (TRANSFER music majors/minors only)Freshmen may take Placement exam with permission of Dr. Heim (permission may be granted at the time of the exam)

Location: Oliphant Hall, Room 204 Thursday, August 27 Written Exam: 4-6 p.m . Sight Singing/Dictation : 6 p.m .

The Theory Placement Exam is required for all incoming Freshmen and Transfer students who are planning to register for any music theory course other than MUS 133 Music Theory I and MUS 135 Aural Skills I.

If approved by Dr. Heim, incoming First Year students who have previously studied music theory at the college level or its equivalent can also take this exam. If you have already registered for (or plan to register for) MUS 133 Music Theory I and MUS 135 Aural Skills I, you do not need to sit for this placement examination.

Sight-Singing Diagnostic Examination

Location: Oliphant Hall, Room 204 Friday, August 28: 10 a .m . – 12:30 P.M.

Students who have voice as their major instrument (BA music majors, BM music majors and music minors) will be tested on their basic sight singing ability. To pass the Diagnostic Sight-Singing Exam, students must successfully sight read a 6 to 8 measure melody in any major or minor key with some leaps. Students will be given the key, starting pitch, and have one minute to review the melody prior to singing. Beginning on Monday, August 17, please sign up for an appointment on the sign-up sheet near the Vocal Bulletin Board across from Bertea Hall, Room 230.

Those students not passing the diagnostic sight-singing exam will be required to take remedial studies (MUS 097 Rudiments of Sight-Singing). Students will be able to take MUS 133 Theory I and MUS 135 Aural Skills I at the same time as MUS 097 if they have passed the diagnostic theory proficiency exam.

This is a mandatory session for all students who are attending Chapman on an F-1 or J-1 visa. (Exception: 1 semester exchange students will have a separate orientation . Contact Kristin Beavers [email protected] with questions) We will be sharing information on immigration regulations, Social Security numbers, employment, bank accounts, health insurance, and other pertinent topics. Please bring your passport.

This is an opportunity to meet students and faculty members from your major.

3:15 – 3:45 p.m .Transfer Forum

Location: Small Group Locations (provided at check-in, please see label on the back of your schedule)

During your Transfer Forums, you will meet with your Orientation Leaders and classmates. These sessions will be a time to meet other transfer students, discuss Orientation events, and ask questions about Chapman life.

4 – 5 p.m .Taking Care of Business

Location: Argyros Forum, Pankey Visitors Center

Do you need to go to the Business Office or the Registrar? How about

buy your books or run a few errands? Finish everything you need to do now so you can enjoy the rest of Orientation without any worries. Orientation Leaders will be present if you have any questions or just want to hang out.

Join the Chapman community for a special interfaith celebration . Whether you consider yourself simply a “spiritual seeker,” curious about developing your spiritual path, practicing meditation, learning about different religions, or whether you are committed to a certain spiritual or religious path, we have opportunities for you. Commemorate the beginning of your Chapman experience with an interfaith celebration led by student leaders and the dean of the Wallace All Faiths Chapel. The Fish Interfaith Center is here to help you shape your unique spiritual journey.

Location: Radio Station in Cheverton Commons (Basement of Henley Hall and Patio), Masson Family Beach Club

Interested in being an on-air DJ for Chapman’s official radio station? Did you know you could get class credit for being a DJ ? Come by the Chapman Radio open house to meet current radio DJs and learn more about meeting times, programming, and Chapman Radio events. At the same time, come to our beach party located at the Masson Family Beach Club to listen to some music. Free giveaways at both locations!

2 – 4 p.m .Honors Mentor/Mentee Dessert Bash

Location: Beckman Hall, Room 404

Students who have been admitted into the University Honors Program will meet their mentors and other returning Honors students at the Mentor Dessert Bash. This will be a chance for incoming students to introduce themselves and to find out about opportunities to become involved with Honors in the coming year.

New and returning students are invited to the DOC dinner in the Wallace All Faiths Chapel at the Fish Interfaith Center. This invitation is extended to all United Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) students and friends. At this event, come learn about the upcoming year’s events, as well as celebrate new and old friendships.
