“Family and Cultural Aspects of Anxiety in Young People”

a lecture by Visiting Professor

Dr. Cecilia Essau, from the University

of Roehamptom, United Kingdom

was held last February 10 on campus.

She also conducted a related lecture

last February 13 and a workshop

on February 18. The Department

of Psychology and the College

of Liberal Arts, with the Office of the Vice

Chancellor for Academics and the Office

of the Executive Director for External

Relations and Internationalization,

sponsored the events.

Her February 10 lecture presented

the findings of cross-cultural studies

on the prevalence of anxiety disorders,

mental health literacy, and factors

related to anxiety in young people.

It also discussed the implications

Sixteen participants from various sectors in the University attended the launch of the Pink Bag Series with Vice Chancellor

for Academics Dr. Myrna Austria as the inaugural speaker.

The series is designed to provide capacity-building activities that aim

to put a spotlight on women’s issues and concerns in the academia

and to create capacity-building activities for authentic female

empowerment, such as life-work balance.

It also seeks to provide opportunities for peer-learning and networking

especially in research, to provide spaces for mentorship, and to

contribute to the University’s efforts to fulfill its mission and vision.

The 2nd session will be in the Special Term. For inquiries, please

of these findings on intervention work

with young people from diverse cultural

backgrounds.

Anxiety disorders were described

as among the most common psychiatric

disorders, which affect up to 20%

of children and adolescents in the general

population. These co-occur highly

with numerous other psychiatric disorders.

When untreated, anxiety disorders

that begin early in life can become

chronic.

student teams from 17 countries across Asia

Pacific, Middle East and Africa, including new

entrants from Australia, Bangladesh, Oman,

and Saudi Arabia. The teams submitted vehicle

entries in either the UrbanConcept or Prototype

category under seven different energy types.

The DLSU ECT was composed of 50 students from

Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communications

Engineering, Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering,

and Manufacturing Engineering and Management,

as well as from Applied Economics and Finance, Legal

Management, and Psychology.

The Lasallian Institute for Development and Educational Research, in collaboration

with the Br. Andrew Gonzalez FSC College of Education,

hosted the Action Research, Action Learning (ARAL) 2015

1st National Congress on Action Research

in Education last February 27 and 28 on campus.

The congress theme, “Improving practices and facilitating

change through action research,” focused on action

researches that have been conducted in public

and private institutions by superintendents, supervisors,

school administrators, teachers, and teacher professionals.

ARAL 2015 became a venue for the sharing of best

practices among educators and education professionals

in order to contribute significantly to the improvement

of the quality of education in the country. ARAL involved

plenary talks of distinguished educators, workshops,

and paper presentations.

Keynote speaker Professor Mary Brydon-Miller, Ph.D.

is the director of the University of Cincinnati’s Action Research

Center and Professor of Educational and Community-based

Action Research in the Educational Studies Program

in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human

Services.

Operation Big Brother, the adopt-a-school program of the Br. Andrew Gonzalez FSC College of Education, conducted its annual

culminating activity last February 20

with the theme “Leadership through

Service and Teamwork.”

The event was attended by 480

Grade 8 students from different DLSU

adopted schools in Metro Manila,

namely Cayetano Arellano High School,

Florentino Torres High School, Gregorio

Perfecto High School, Jose P. Laurel

High School, Manuel Araullo High

School, Mandaluyong High School,

Manuel Roxas High School, Manila

Science High School, Ramon

Magsaysay High School, and Victorino

Mapa High School. The activity intended

to incorporate the lessons discussed

during the weekly values formation

sessions conducted in their schools.

De La Salle Philippines Sector

Vocations Ministry Director Br. Iñigo

Riola FSC emphasized the importance

of Lasallian Guiding Principles in servant

leadership. As part of their service

learning, BS Educational Psychology

practicum students conducted

a workshop on “Serving by Working

Together” and accompanied the students

on a tour around campus.

A mass was held at the Most Blessed

Sacrament Chapel. Vice Chancellor for

Lasallian Mission Br. Michael Broughton

FSC welcomed the students in the

university. BAG CED Dean Dr. John

Addy Garcia ended the event by sharing

a message of inspiration to the scholars.

Dr. Niño Jose Mateo is the OBB

director.

As part of its 40th year anniversary celebration, the Communication Department, in partnership

with the DLSU Alumni Association and Team Communication,

held the first DLSU Communication Conference last February

27 on campus.

Entitled “40 x 40: The New Dimensions of Communication,”

the conference was intended as a showcase of Lasallian

talent and excellence in Philippine media and included several

plenary sessions and lectures by over 20 industry stalwarts

such as news anchors Miguel Enriquez and Rico Hizon;

screenwriters and directors Dr. Clodualdo Del Mundo, Jr.

and Jose Javier Reyes; Creative Director of Solaire Hotel and

theater actor Audi Gemora; Chief Creative Director of CreAsia,

Inc. and STRATCOM Executive Director Ayi Magpayo; and

Campaigns and Grey Executive Creative Director Rizzo Regis-

Tangan.

De La Salle University recently held the 2015 Research Congress from March 2 to 4 with the theme,

“#ResearchforSustainableFuture.” The Congress

provided an opportunity for faculty, researchers,

and students to disseminate their research output.

The congress featured 2009 Nobel Laureate for Chemistry

Prof. Ada Yonath with her Bridges Program lecture titled

“Moving forward to Maintain Sustainability for the Future of

Mankind” at the Teresa Yuchengco Auditorium.

As a prelude to the Bridges seminar, DLSU invited two

foremost women chemists in the country: National Scientist

Dr. Lourdes Cruz and Philippine Nuclear Research

Institute Director Dr. Alumanda dela Rosa in the planary

session “Great Women, Great Chemists.”

Another highlight of the Congress is the Fellows Talk

as selected University Fellows  delivered inspiring lectures

in a  TED talk-style forum. It was followed by the presentation

of the third issue of Questions magazine, which features

outstanding research by DLSU faculty.

In an effort to develop skills of students and teachers

for publishing researches in high-impact journals in natural

sciences, technology, humanities and social sciences,

a workshop was held on March 3.

Research Centers also showcased their research agenda,

activities, and outputs in an exhibit. Technical papers

covering various topics were also presented by researchers

from DLSU and other institutions in the technical panel

sessions.

On the last day of the Congress, DLSU research center

directors shared their insights on the opportunities

in sustainability and the importance of research collaboration.
