DESCRIPTION

These cards are DLQs (Daily Language Quests) in the form of printable cards / exercise book. The idea is that language can be learned via short 1-5 minute sessions which can be accomplished alone, with a co-learner or with natives. DLQs are a part of my Master's Thesis in Interaction Design at Umeå Institute of Design. My Thesis blog can be found at http://2013ixd.tumblr.com

Ask the time

In Swedish, you ask someone for the time with the question:Vad är klockan?

litteraly "What's the clock?"

If you ask a stranger, you can add an "excuse-me":Ursäkta, vad är klockan?

But if you're in the middle of a conversation, you might ask instead:Förresten, hur mycket är klockan?

litteraly "By the way, how much is clock [at]?"

Don't forget to say thank you!Tack!

Say the time

In Swedish, you say the time by litteraly announcing that"The clock is 14:25." (for example)

Klockan är fjorton tjugofem.

You can express "quarter till" or "quarter past" like this.Klockan är kvart i två. (13:45)| Klockan är kvart över två. (14:15)Klockan är fem i två. (13:55)| Klockan är sju över två. (14:07)

You can express "half past" by saying "It's half three." Think about it asthe minutes hand is halfway to three.

Klockan är halv tre. (14:30)

You can also compound these methods and create sentences like "It'seight minutes to half seven." (6:22)

Klockan är åtta i halv sju.

Practice with these: 03:15, 09:47, 10:45, 12:00, 17:26, 23:40, 00:00

Swedish u

The Swedish "u" sound is quite difficult to pronounce fornative speakers of English.

This exercise will hopefully teach you how to make thatsignature "u" sound (IPA1 [y] ) or close enough that you'll beunderstood.

Page 10: DLQ exercise book

Swedish u

1. To make the Swedish u sound, start with the English "ee" sound (like "eek!"). Make sure you exageratethe shape of your mouth. It should look like an exagerated smile.

2. From there, squeeze the corners of your mouth together as if you were making a kissy face. Keepsaying "eee".

3. If you've made it to the center without the sound changing from "ee" to "oo", you've probablysucceeded. You can grab a native and give them a listen of your Swedish "u" to maybe get some pointerson how you're pronouncing it.

1. eeee 2. ee -> uu 3. uuuu
