Tidings of great JOY…Tend and Befriend through Service

Tend and Befriend – December is Nor Thorns Infest the Ground month. This month also includes a special holi-day for our families. It is a time to relax a bit, enjoy your friends and love ones, and begin preparing for the next year. About a week prior to Thanksgiving, I tuned our automobile radios to Holiday Traditions. It seemed a bit early. However, I was already into the Spirit of Christmas. Soon, old familiar Christmas songs became Sing-a-longs during our visits to your clubs. I began to hear and question some of the old familiar lines in our carols. For example, where, while traveling during the holidays, might one find that the “traffic is terrific.” Apparently, the writer neither traveled on I-77 nor I-85! Later, while listen-ing carefully to “Jingle Bells” came this startling fact: “He got into a drifted bank and then we got upsot” (overturned). I won-dered if Miss Fanny Bright had been injured, as well as what were the Brights thinking when they named their daughter “Fanny.” Verse three of “Joy to the World,” contains the line ending in “…nor thorns infest the ground.” The verse is pre-ceded by the good news that the Savior reigns and that we are to shout to the world to be joyful. It then con- cludes with exhort-ing the won- ders of His love. This familiar carol reminds us of the happiness that, with the Sav-ior’s birth, we now have a better place to live and serve others. At the end of December, our clubs will have completed one-half of their year. Christmas reminds us that we have an op-portunity to be joyful and share our happiness with others in our communities. As we “Tend and Befriend Others through Service,” “thorns will not infest” our efforts. We will not be hin-dered in our efforts, and we will find new and innovative ways to serve others. Regardless of your religious background, for over one hun-dred years, Lions Clubs all over the world have ‘served oth-ers’. Our acts of kindness bring joy to those less fortunate in our communities. In many cases, we are able to heal infirmi-ties such as hunger, clothing, sight, hearing, health and envi-ronment issues. Use your expertise and love of others to pursue a ser-vice project during December. I know of several clubs who have replaced their own club party with an event to serve oth-ers. Be a Bell Ringer or collect toys for groups in your area.

Give a Gift to Brighter Visions

Are you looking for a gift for that special some-one who has everything? Consider making a do-nation to Brighter Visions in honor of that person. There are two ways you can make a donation in honor of someone. You can go to the NC Lions Incorporated web site at www.nclionsinc.org and click on the “Donate Today!” button at the top right corner of the page. You will be taken to a page where you can designate the amount you want to give and your method of payment. You can also click the “Honor or remember someone with your gift” box and complete the information regarding the person you are honoring. You can also make a donation in honor of someone by sending a check made payable to NC Lions, Inc. Include the name and address of the person being honored as well as your name and address. You can ask that a card be sent to the honoree. Mail your donation to North Carolina Lions, Inc., 7050 Camp Dogwood Drive, Sherrills Ford, NC. Be sure to put your club name in the information so your club will get credit for your Brighter Visions donation. During this holiday season, you can honor someone with your gift while providing funds to help thousands of visually impaired individuals across the state.

2nd VDG Jimmy Myers Where has the year gone? Someone has said that life is like a roll of toilet paper; the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes. So Christmas comes again—a wonderful time of the year. Don’t you wish we could get the joy of this season spread to all the year. If we think it, we can do it. Try to make it a priority in your lives that the giving attitude of Christmas expand to all of 2018. May you have a joyous and most Merry Christmas, and the Happiest of New Years. Keep selling those Camp Dogwood Tickets.

Funds are needed more than ever. .

In spite of drastic measures to reduce the budg-

et for NCLI, contributions to Brighter Visions

have not kept up with expenses for many years.

Now, with reserve funds dwindling, the very sur-

vival of Camp Dogwood is at stake. Dig deep,

do an extra fundraiser and look for potential

partners in your community.

G.S.T. Corner

Hello Lions,

I am happy to report that the Dis-

trict service project on Nov. 5th at

Camp Dogwood was a success! Fifty

Lions packed 10,152 meals with the

supplies from Rise against Hunger.

We had a great team for this two hour

project which made the time fly.

We will soon be planning parties

and listening to our favorite Christ-

mas music. Wouldn’t this be a great

time to hold a drive for the local food

pantry?

Finally: The Bionic Eye! Fran Fulton has a genetic disorder that started to take her vision when she was 6. Four

years ago, at 65, the Philadelphian got an implant on her retina, along with glasses

containing a tiny video camera. Now she can detect the outlines of people and objects

as a series of blinking lights. “I can see the cars going by,” Fulton says. “I don’t just

hear them going swish, swish.” Fulton was patient No. 6 in the United States to get the

Argus II system, which the FDA has approved for use by people with retinitis pigmento-

sa. It has been implanted in about 250 patients. But the device — and a newer version

called the Orion — is expected to be available for patients with all types of blindness in

a few years. — Mindy Fetterman
