Optimizing Online Work Based Learning using the JISC WBL Maturity Toolkit

The JISC WBL Maturity Toolkit was used by Swansea Metropolitan University to optimize the design of Online distance learning courses for work-based learners. The University provides logistics training for the UK armed forces based in Germany and elsewhere and Online distance learning delivery made complete sense. Although the University has been involved in a number of innovative e-learning development projects, Online delivery of work-based distance learning was new. This paper describes how the development team used the WBL Maturity Toolkit developed by JISC, the primary TEL support organization in the UK, as part of a structured design process. The paper will show how use of the toolkit shaped the Online course design in preparation for approval and validation by the University. The work was carried out as part of a JISC funded project which involved a number of other University partners. The paper will also summarize the outcomes of those Online WBL developments at those institutions and will describe how they used the WBL Toolkit in that process.
