Take your child’s education“Outside the Box” with Hewitt . . .

Balance Character, Academics, Work, and ServiceAcademics are only one important aspect of your children’s education.Strong moral character, self-discipline, and good manners will producea person others enjoy being with. A strong work ethic and a servant’sheart help provide balance.

Personalize Your Home EducationJust because your child is eight, it doesn’t mean he or she will fitinto a third-grade box. Consider your student’s skills, not chrono-logical age. Challenge his/her mind, but enable your child to suc-ceed. What are your student’s interests? A packaged “grade-three”curriculum doesn’t take any of these into consideration.

Encourage Home School, Not School at HomeFirsthand experiences will excite your student’s desire for learning.

Great literature will help mature reasoning and understanding. Manyparents switch to Hewitt because they have been burned out by an

overly-structured academic curriculum. If you and your children arenot enjoying your homeschooling, you need to make some changes.

Develop a Mind for a Lifetime of UseStudents achieve excellence through a combination of

enthusiasm, hard work, and the use of superior resources. Youcan create enthusiastic students by praising specific skills and

encouraging them to do their best even at a young age. Hewittoffers a balanced, flexible, and complete approach to home-

schooling. A lifelong, whole-hearted learner will be your result.

Hewitt’s Senior High Philosophy

EVERYONE IS UNIQUEStudents are different in how they learn, what they enjoy, and in theireducational goals. One of the great advantages of home schooling is thetremendous opportunity to fit the educational program to each child.

FLEXIBILITY IS KEYAlthough we recommend specific texts, we work with you whenever othertexts are desired. We also allow the creation of courses we do not currentlyoffer (e.g., logic, SAT Prep, zoology).

PEOPLE LEARN BEST THROUGH ACTIVITYWe emphasize active participation on the students’ parts in the learningprocess. For example, our history courses include many projects to allowstudents to learn and show what they've learned, through reading, writing, researching, drawing, building, acting, and even singing, rather than simplytaking tests.

EDUCATION IS NOT ALL IN BOOKSTherefore, we offer credit for work and volunteer experience, as well as educational travel. These experiences helpdevelop such traits as discipline, compassion, and integrity. We've had students receive credit for such diverseactivities as mission endeavors, running a business, training horses, acting as a museum guide, and traveling.

CRITICAL THINKING IS VITALStudents need to learn how to think, to differentiate between fact andopinion, and to do research. Our approach emphasizes research, primary sources, and opinion essays.

INDEPENDENCE SHOULD BE FOSTEREDWe want to become acquainted with our enrollees. We encourageour students to take charge of their education and to contact uswith questions or problems (of course, parents can do the same).

WHAT YOU GETWe provide structure, guidance, grades, credits, transcripts, and diplomas. Counseling is also available by letter, phone, fax, or e-mail. Letter grades are given each quarter, but they are a small part of the evaluations. Inaddition, your student's work will receive personal attention, often with specific suggestions for improvement. Ourevaluators strive to be supportive, realistic, and educational in their comments.

WHAT YOU DOSubmit the registration form on pages 27–28 and payment for either the full year or the first month. When wereceive the registration form, we will mail a student I.D. card, questionnaires to complete and return, and a HighSchool Handbook. Questionnaires are also available on line to expedite your enrollment. Someone will call ore-mail once the questionnaires are received to help you make course/text choices. You have 12 months tocomplete your academic year.

GRADUATIONUpon completion of all Hewitt requirements, a diploma is issued. To qualify for our

diploma, students must complete a minimum of 21 credits of study and scoresatisfactorily on an achievement test, college board exam, or GED. If you submit your

state's graduation requirements, we can build a program to match them. Our diplomas andcredits have been accepted by the armed forces, public and private high schools, community

colleges, and universities.

TRANSFER STUDENTSOur high school is a four-year program. We welcome transferstudents and will work with them to accept as many courses aspossible. We will also provisionally accept a parent’s transcript ofa home-schooled student’s high school credits.

ACCREDITATIONWe have chosen not to become accredited by the government orby an independent accrediting agency, because we do not wantan accrediting body to dictate the courses, textbooks, andteachers that we must employ. Many state and private collegesand universities are accepting students without an accrediteddiploma. You can ask for a copy of a list of approximately 75colleges/univ. that have accepted Hewitt’s transcript/diploma.

Basic Track Our Basic track is meant for studentswho are not academically inclinedand/or are not interested in pursuingcollege. Remember, this is not a for-mal system, and you are in no waylocked in. This is simply an exampleof how a student not planning oncollege might meet our graduationrequirements.

College Preparatory This sample track is for students whointend on pursuing college, but whoare not ready for part or all of theHonors track.

Honors TrackThe sample Honors track is for stu-dents who have exceptional aca-demic skills in one or more areas. It isdesigned to provide a greater num-ber of credits, particularly in aca-demic areas, than our other tracks.

College PrerequisitesCollege-bound students should contact college admissions of-fices early during high school to request entrance requirementsso they can prepare to meet them. If a major has been chosen, electives should be selected from that specific subject area. Thesestudents should take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or theAmerican College Test (ACT) early in their junior or senior year.

SyllabiMany of our math and all of our science

syllabi now include daily scheduleswhich would be helpful to non-enrolledstudents. Unless specified, test answers

are NOT included with syllabi.

Single-Course OptionPerhaps you feel comfortable grading all sub-jects but English or history. Or maybe youwant to test our program before investing in afull-time package. You can enroll in a singlecourse and get evaluations, phone help, andtranscript for any class. Our English programprobably gets the most compliments. We setout to challenge your student to constantlywork on and improve his or her ability to com-municate clearly. This applies not only togrammar, punctuation, sentence structure, etc., but also to the content itself. We expectthe student’s move from our high-school sen-ior English program to any college to be al-most unnoticeable. If you are looking for somehelp, but not for everything, we think you andyour student will appreciate the input.

The rule of thumb for grading is that if you have an answer key, you grade the work.

If you don’t, our teachers grade the work.

My daughter and I found the British: Early to Mid 19th Century guide to be a very comprehensive study of the period’s lit‐erature in addition to an aid to developing critical analysis and composition skills. . . . The lessons are well written andclear so that your child can do this study independently. The teacher guide makes it very easy for you as the parent to

grade the work and gauge how well your child is doing throughout the lessons.—Barbara Campbell

I really liked having something that gave me interesting literary topics to write about. I enjoy studying literature and I also loveShakespeare. This is probably one of the best literature programs I have come across in [my] homeschooling career. I reallyliked Lightning Lit a lot. I hope I have time to complete the Shakespeare Comedies & Sonnets program. (age 17, 12th grade)

Most Christians know the name Elisabeth Elliot and her experi-ences which are recounted in Through Gates of Splendor. She, herhusband Jim, and daughter Valerie were missionaries in Ecuadorover fifty years ago. Jim and four other young men were mar-tyred while trying to share the gospel.

This is the only novel Mrs. Elliot (now Gren) ever wrote. It’sthe tale of Margaret Sparhawk and her adventures in Ecuador. But it is so much more. Lucy Austen, author of our American andBritish Christian authors, got permission for us to reprint thisbook to use in her new Lightning Lit guide. We were thrilled todo so. While we highly recommend that you take the course,

even if you don’t, please have your studentsread this well-crafted novel. It challengesmany preconceptions and viewpoints thatChristians often take for granted. This takescritical thinking to a level beyond just litera-ture and into the lofty heights of theology, but in a very practical manner. Don’t missthis opportunity to explore your own ideas ofGod while being led by the hand by an au-thor you can trust! (Grades 9–12)

We may not say that we have the answers. Questions ofhow to conduct oneself as a Christian, or how to serve asa Christian, must be answered by life itself—the life of theindividual in his direct responsible relationship to God.—Elisabeth Elliot

We particularly like Vocabulary from the Classical Roots (Note: mostof the Vocabulary for Enjoyment books are now out of print.) You should also have an EnglishHandbook to use as a resource when writing. We particularly like the Write Source Handbooks(www.greatsource.com), but you need buy only one handbook for junior high and one forsenior high (not one every year).

During the process of enrolling in different classes at the university I came toappreciate the quality of education I received through Hewitt Homeschool-ing—and especially the English that was taught and consulted by you. Out ofsix thousand incoming freshmen in University at Buffalo only twenty-two stu-dents made it to the advanced English class—I was one of them! Withoutyour help and guidance I’m not sure I would be there. I must say that beforeenrolling into the Hewitt program I was afraid of English, hated reading, anddespised writing. In five years you turned me into a bookworm! I am enjoyingstudying, writing, and reading. I appreciate all the work you’ve done for meand the great advice and support you’ve provided me with during my yearswith Hewitt Homeschooling. —Barbara Bradley, 2010

Church History Courses

Why Study Church History? The strongest faith is the examined faith. The faith that is most useable is rooted in time and his-tory. Men and women in prior centuries not only passed the faith on to succeeding generations, but in the process became part of the faith and of Christian history. The church is not a place onegoes to, but a meaningful and vibrant community one may experience and participate in. Thestudy of Church history means to come to terms with the living faith of the dead. A society whichhas no history is like a person with no memory. Being detached from our personal histories cancause alienation and isolation. The same is true of the faith. The study of Church history bringsthe student—regardless of age—into contact with the past, creates a meaningful faith in the present, and connectson to the future of God’s work in our world of time and history. When the time had fully come, God sent God’s son . . .We should know how that came to pass and what difference that event made in the world.—Dr. Thomas A. Fudge
