DescriptionofSchool:BrightwaysLearning(formerlyWorldWideIndependentDistanceEducationofAmerica,WWIDEA)isa501(c)(3)non-profitorganizationthatwaslaunchedin2002andhousestheBrightwaysGlobalAcademy(formerlyWorldWideIDEAPrivateAcademy).BrightwaysLearning’sfounderssawahugeneedforchoiceandchangeineducationalopportunities.Thetraditionalclassroomsettingwasfailingatmeetingtheneedsofallstudents.In2006,BrightwaysLearningdevelopedandpursuedaccreditationforthefirstPrivateAcademy,"WorldWideIDEA",toprovidehome-basedschoolsupportformilitaryandotherfamilieslivingworldwide,andespeciallythoselivinginremotelocations.Ourrelativelyuniquemodelprovidesanoptiontohome-educatingfamiliesandindividualsacrosstheglobe,supportingchoiceincurriculum,aswellasdiverselearningstylesandenvironments.TheBrightwaysGlobalAcademyservesasmallnumberofstudentsprimarilyresidingoverseaswhileoneorbothoftheirparentsareservinginthemilitaryorStateDepartment.Somepaytheirowntuitionandothersreceivetuitionandcurriculumfundingsupportfromthegovernmentserviceagencythatemploysthem.Ouracademyalsoservesasasafehavenforstudentsenteringahome-basedenvironmentduetobullyinginschool,significantillness,orforcreditrecoverytoreturntoasuccessfulgraduationtrack.Ouracademyisstaunchlycommittedtoprovidingthehighestlevelofeducationandmeetingtheindividualizedneedsofeachofourenrolledstudents.Ourstaffmembersservemultiplepurposestoensurethattheaccreditationstandardsaresignificantlymetandourstudentsreceiveahigh-qualityeducationthatwillservethemwellforlifelongsuccess.Herearejustafewrealstoriesasexamplesofhowweserve:

BrightwaysGlobalAcademyoverseesmultipleeducationalchoicesthatourCertifiedTeacherscanoffertoourstudentstofindthebestfitfortheirneedsandeducationalgoals.Coursescanbeparent-designed,printedtextbook/materialsfromtraditionalvendors,oronlinepackages.Deliverycanhappenwiththeparentprovidingdirectinstruction,throughacomputer,orwiththird-partyinstructorsatotherinstitutionseitheron-campusorvirtually.Studentsmayalsoearndualcredit,asappropriate.Theavailabilityandappropriatelyappliedvariedcourseoptionsallowourschooltouniquelyservedrasticallydifferenteducationalneedsandstudentpopulations.Additionalbenefits/servicesourschoolprovidesinclude:

levelandneeds.Ourcertifiedteachersthenworkwiththeparent-teachertoselectlearningresourcestohelpdelivertheinstructiontofulfilleachstudent’sindividualizedlearningplancourses.AboutOurIndividualLearningPlan(ILP)approach:Individualizededucationisthefoundationofwhatwedo.Handinhandwiththatishelpingensurethatstudentsalsomastertheeducationstandardsthatareapplicableandappropriatefortheirgradelevelandachievementgoals.OurBrightwaysStudentManagementSystem’s(SMS)IndividualLearningPlantoolssupportthisneedeffectivelyandefficientlytoensureeachstudentreceivesahigh-qualityeducation.Hereisabriefdescriptionofthisprocess:
• OurassignedCertifiedTeacherworkscloselywiththestudentandhome-educatingparenttodecideontheappropriatecoursesneededfortheirgrade/learninglevel.Forhighschoolstudents,wehelpensuretheyareontrackwiththeircreditsforgraduationandalsoforsupportingpost-secondaryplans.
• IntheBrightwaysSMS,theCertifiedTeacherand/orparentdevelopthestudent’sILP,coursebycourse.Thesystemisdesignedforapprovedcourseselectionandapplicablegradescalebygradelevel.
• Whenanotherformaleducationinstitutionisselectedtoprovideacourseandtheassociatedgrades,thatcourseisspeciallyflaggedsothattheCertifiedTeacherandourAcademyRegistrarknowtoexpectthosecoursegradesfromthatspecificinstitution.
• WithintheBrightaysSMSarenationaleducationstandards.Foreachcourse,theapplicablestandardsareselectedand“attached”sothatthelearningexpectationsareclearbetweentheCertifiedTeacher,parent,andstudent.
• Thesestandardscanbe,andarecommonly“mapped”tobeaddressed(generallymultipletimes)monthbymonthovertheyear.Periodically,particularlywhenProgressReports(termgrades)aredue,thestudent’smasteryofeachofthosecoursestandardsisreviewedandmasterylevelisupdatedinthesystem.
• ThisallowstheCertifiedTeacher,parent,andstudenttohavevaluablediscussionsandfollowup,includinginterventionsasneeded,toensurethestudentisontrackinachievingtheirlearningexpectationsfortheyear.
• TheILPcanalsoitselfbeadjusted,asneeded,dependingonnewdiscoveriesaboutlearningstylesandneedsoreducationsettingchanges.Studentsworkingontheirown,ratherthanbeingsupervisedbyaparent,aresolelyengagedintheirownlearningplanandexpectations.
NotableAchievementsandAreasofImprovement:BrightwaysGlobalAcademyservesstudentsprimarilyresidingoverseaswhileservinginthemilitary,StateDepartment,andU.S.ex-patriots.Studentsingovernment-servicefamiliesoftencontinuetheirenrollmentwithusoncethefamilyisre-assignedintheUnitedStates.Thisisoneindicatorofhowourfamiliesarehighlysatisfiedwithourschoolandservices,remainingenrolledwithusevenwhenmoreeducationaloptionsbecomeavailable.
