Russell, Suite 114 Missoula, Montana 59801 BrightwaysLearning.org 1 Description of School: Brightways Learning (formerly WorldWide Independent Distance Education of America, WW IDEA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was launched in 2002 and houses the Brightways Global Academy (formerly WorldWide IDEA Private Academy). Brightways Learning’s founders saw a huge need for choice and change in educational opportunities. The traditional classroom setting was failing at meeting the needs of all students. In 2006, Brightways Learning developed and pursued accreditation for the first Private Academy, "WorldWide IDEA", to provide home-based school support for military and other families living worldwide, and especially those living in remote locations. Our relatively unique model provides an option to home-educating families and individuals across the globe, supporting choice in curriculum, as well as diverse learning styles and environments. The Brightways Global Academy serves a small number of students primarily residing overseas while one or both of their parents are serving in the military or State Department. Some pay their own tuition and others receive tuition and curriculum funding support from the government service agency that employs them. Our academy also serves as a safe haven for students entering a home-based environment due to bullying in school, significant illness, or for credit recovery to return to a successful graduation track. Our academy is staunchly committed to providing the highest level of education and meeting the individualized needs of each of our enrolled students. Our staff members serve multiple purposes to ensure that the accreditation standards are significantly met and our students receive a high-quality education that will serve them well for lifelong success. Here are just a few real stories as examples of how we serve: Developing an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) with a parent for their special needs elementary son who is being homeschooled due to health and behavioral issues Helping a group of at-risk high school students looking for options to dropping out Researching and talking through the options of online AP courses for several advanced high school students from a military family stationed in South Korea Collaborating with a DoDEA (Department of Defense Education Activity) school for a student who is dually enrolled, half-time in the Academy and half-time at the local school Working with a student who is training in Georgia for the Olympics to ensure he graduates in a timely manner even though his days are extremely divided between practice and travel Planning with and supporting an Air Force family who wants a consistent, stable educational environment (without interruption) for their four children as they routinely move to different locations Coordinating with a New Jersey mother, who recently relocated to Saudi Arabia, to arrange standardized testing for her elementary-aged son and middle school daughter Helping find curriculum materials for a 1st-grade girl living with her government-employed parents in war-torn Ukraine that she could download and work through on her computer tablet because they are commonly offline and sometimes have to quickly move to a safer location

BrightwaysGlobalAcademyoverseesmultipleeducationalchoicesthatourCertifiedTeacherscanoffertoourstudentstofindthebestfitfortheirneedsandeducationalgoals.Coursescanbeparent-designed,printedtextbook/materialsfromtraditionalvendors,oronlinepackages.Deliverycanhappenwiththeparentprovidingdirectinstruction,throughacomputer,orwiththird-partyinstructorsatotherinstitutionseitheron-campusorvirtually.Studentsmayalsoearndualcredit,asappropriate.Theavailabilityandappropriatelyappliedvariedcourseoptionsallowourschooltouniquelyservedrasticallydifferenteducationalneedsandstudentpopulations.Additionalbenefits/servicesourschoolprovidesinclude:

levelandneeds.Ourcertifiedteachersthenworkwiththeparent-teachertoselectlearningresourcestohelpdelivertheinstructiontofulfilleachstudent’sindividualizedlearningplancourses.AboutOurIndividualLearningPlan(ILP)approach:Individualizededucationisthefoundationofwhatwedo.Handinhandwiththatishelpingensurethatstudentsalsomastertheeducationstandardsthatareapplicableandappropriatefortheirgradelevelandachievementgoals.OurBrightwaysStudentManagementSystem’s(SMS)IndividualLearningPlantoolssupportthisneedeffectivelyandefficientlytoensureeachstudentreceivesahigh-qualityeducation.Hereisabriefdescriptionofthisprocess:

• OurassignedCertifiedTeacherworkscloselywiththestudentandhome-educatingparenttodecideontheappropriatecoursesneededfortheirgrade/learninglevel.Forhighschoolstudents,wehelpensuretheyareontrackwiththeircreditsforgraduationandalsoforsupportingpost-secondaryplans.

• IntheBrightwaysSMS,theCertifiedTeacherand/orparentdevelopthestudent’sILP,coursebycourse.Thesystemisdesignedforapprovedcourseselectionandapplicablegradescalebygradelevel.

• Whenanotherformaleducationinstitutionisselectedtoprovideacourseandtheassociatedgrades,thatcourseisspeciallyflaggedsothattheCertifiedTeacherandourAcademyRegistrarknowtoexpectthosecoursegradesfromthatspecificinstitution.

• WithintheBrightaysSMSarenationaleducationstandards.Foreachcourse,theapplicablestandardsareselectedand“attached”sothatthelearningexpectationsareclearbetweentheCertifiedTeacher,parent,andstudent.

• Thesestandardscanbe,andarecommonly“mapped”tobeaddressed(generallymultipletimes)monthbymonthovertheyear.Periodically,particularlywhenProgressReports(termgrades)aredue,thestudent’smasteryofeachofthosecoursestandardsisreviewedandmasterylevelisupdatedinthesystem.

• ThisallowstheCertifiedTeacher,parent,andstudenttohavevaluablediscussionsandfollowup,includinginterventionsasneeded,toensurethestudentisontrackinachievingtheirlearningexpectationsfortheyear.

• TheILPcanalsoitselfbeadjusted,asneeded,dependingonnewdiscoveriesaboutlearningstylesandneedsoreducationsettingchanges.Studentsworkingontheirown,ratherthanbeingsupervisedbyaparent,aresolelyengagedintheirownlearningplanandexpectations.

NotableAchievementsandAreasofImprovement:BrightwaysGlobalAcademyservesstudentsprimarilyresidingoverseaswhileservinginthemilitary,StateDepartment,andU.S.ex-patriots.Studentsingovernment-servicefamiliesoftencontinuetheirenrollmentwithusoncethefamilyisre-assignedintheUnitedStates.Thisisoneindicatorofhowourfamiliesarehighlysatisfiedwithourschoolandservices,remainingenrolledwithusevenwhenmoreeducationaloptionsbecomeavailable.
