BHP Billiton has been a valuable client for Descon with a longhistory of fruitful association. Descon has previously completedtwo earlier phases at the Zamzama Plant, the site of thecurrent project of Front End Compression (FEC) facility. Thenew plant located adjacent to the existing installations presentedrestrictive working conditions and stringent HSE environment. It was also required to be completed within a highly compressedtimeframe. Besides erection of the (GE supplied) compressorpackages (along with the associated duplex steel plant pipingand steel structure), the work scope also included laying of1km of super duplex steel cross countr y pipeline.

Selection of the project supervisory team was also quitestringent, requiring each member to possess strong experiencerelated to the job. The project team also responded positivelyto the client's requirements and discharged their respectiveroles with full commitment, achieving the first critical milestoneof completion of the project earthworks. This part was criticalto star t off the subsequent activities of mechanical andstructural foundations. The task for fabrication of CS pipingand steel structure was assigned to Karachi ManufacturingWorks (KMW) while the more complex and demanding partfor fabrication of stainless steel piping was done by LahoreManufacturing Works (LMW).

During execution, there were unprecedented floods in theregion, severing the lines of communications and impedingmobilization of the required resources like heavy cranes etc.

At one stage the site was forced to be fully demobilized foralmost a month.

The project has now been completed in full compliance tothe specifications and satisfaction of the client. The first‘gas-in’, operational checks as well as commissioning of thecross-country pipeline was achieved smoothly. Moreover, theproject safety record has been exemplary with activeparticipation of all members of the working team. Consideringall their projects the world over, BHP has declared the FECproject as the best performer in HSE. The BHP project teamhas conveyed their full satisfaction and appreciated the supportthey received from Descon in all stages of project execution.

One of our diversification objectives has been to venture intothe specialized field of offshore operations. It became a realitywhen Descon Engineering FZE (HMW) was awarded thefabrication and supply of spudcans for Seajack's Zartan projectfor Jack-up rigs, by Lamprell Offshore.

Spudcans form a critical part of jack-up rigs; they are attachedto the lower end of the rig's legs and are also used to ejectthe legs settled in the ocean sands when the rig makes amove while operating in the sea.

The job was to fabricate 450 tons of marine grade structuralmaterial along with 3,500 dia-inches of pressure piping installedwithin the spudcans. As it was Descon's first experience withmarine grade material AH/EH/DH 36 (AH/EH/DH 36 materialare grades having 79,000~90,000 PSI and specifically used inship building and marine industry), the main constraint wasto get welding procedures and welders approved by theAmerican Bureau of Shipping (ABS). With a delivery constraintof six months, about 35 welders were qualified for plate andpiping material with ABS for three types of material gradesAH/EH/DH 36 material ranging from 3 mm to any higher

thickness. All fabrication activities from material marking untilfinal inspection were witnessed and recorded by the clientand owner company as well.

Specialized painting procedures had to be followed accordingto marine standards for tough operational ambient conditionsas implemented by Seajacks. Metal surfaces had to be cleanedbefore painting with 220 bar water jet followed by salt andprofile tests.

Finally, the moment came when HMW made history, withthe accomplishment of Descon's first ever 'off-shore fabricationjob', by delivering all the four Spudcans at the end of May2011 within the crammed schedule of 6 months and afterpassing stringent quality tests and inspection procedurespreset by American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), our valuedclient Lamprell Plc and owner company Seajacks.

By undertaking this challenge, HMW now stands qualified formarine grade material which is a prerequisite for marineworks. This job has paved our way ahead for new opportunitiesin future marine projects.

Mirfa Air Separation Unit

The aftermath of twentieth century ushered a quantum leapin the energy demand for the ever developing world at large.Earlier, hydrocarbons were merely utilized to meet only theenergy requirement but as technology developed, the thirstfor energy led to newer technologies to extract more orcalorific value from each unit of hydro carbon. The wells aftera passage of time get depleted, however there are still reservesavailable to be extracted from the reservoirs. There havebeen various technologies to further extract gas from thesepressure depleted wells as the injecting of steam, methanegas, etc, the latest one is to inject an inert gas. Nitrogen isnot only chemically inert thus safe from any reactions butalso does not need any feedstock for its production as it isabundantly available in the air.

The construction of the Air Separation plant at Mirfa havingthe latest state-of-the-art technology from Linde has beenundertaken by Descon as the overall contractor of the entireplant, having constructed the entire civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and HVAC scope of work. The project wascompleted by a workforce of over 2,000 in 4.5 millionman-hours without any Loss Time Incident. These areimpressive statistics as the Mirfa project right from its inceptionhas been under sharp focus.

The Mirfa Air Separation Plant consisting of two identicaltrains went into full production of 660,000 Nm3/hr at 40 barand purity of <10ppm oxygen in July 2011, well within itsscheduled completion time. The nitrogen produced istransported through a cross country pipeline to Habshanwhere it is grouted into Adnoc's gas fields. The natural gaspresently used for this purpose is thus used for energy

generation. This is a decisive factor as the skyrocketing growthin the UAE has also drastically increased energy consumption.Linde Engineering and Gasco are joint partners in Elixier, theowner of the Mirfa plant has given the go ahead for constructionof two similar additional trains for nitrogen production throughthe process of air separation in the near future. Havingsuccessfully completed the first two trains on schedule, Qualityand above all HSE parameters, Descon is thus well-poised totake up this challenge. (Qaiser Naqvi)

History

The origins of engineering design inDescon date back to the mid 1980’s.Descon at that time aspired to be anINTEGRATED engineering company. This concept, which translates intoOne-Stop Shop in layman's terms, couldnot work in the absence of anengineering faculty. The pioneerdepartment was named as PEP (ProcessEngineering & Piping). It was located ina building opposite Descon's main officeon Davis Road and operated with astaff of about 30 people. With leaderslike Mr. Mohsin Ali and Mr. Ilyas A. Sajjad, this section carried out engineeringdesign for many domestic projects. ICIPakistan was perhaps the biggest clientin those days that featured arrays ofprecision drawing boards, mylars, ammonia printing and most remarkably,a “clean room” for two computers whenDr. Sarmad Malik thought of CADingdrawings. The experience profile andself-confidence kept growing withprojects like Lucky Goldstar DOP Plantand Rafhan Expansion & WetmillAutomation.

The whole ball game for Engineeringchanged in late 1995 when Fauji JordanFertilizer project was awarded to aconsortium where Descon was one ofthe main venture partners. Sheer designwork volume of F JFC project

necessitated further expansion andconsolidation of the design pool.Engineering Services (ES) moved to a

two-storey purpose-built office at LMWsite on Ferozepur Road in the first halfof 1996. Other significant changes atthat time were full introduction of CADsystems, amalgamation of PowerEngineering Department into ES andmerger of CAES section with Pipingsection. ES peaked to 350 staff membersduring late 1990’s.

Following FJFC project, ES came acrossEPC projects ….new terminology anda new generation in project formation… to deal with. Engro LPG Storage,Engro VCM Storage and OMV MianoDevelopment projects were the mainEPC achievements. In same days, ESsuccessfully accomplished two pureengineering jobs, which were awardedby Japanese E&C contractors: ARLExpansion from Mitsui E&C and PARCOMCR from JGC Corporat ion .

Oil & gas prices touched their historicallowest in 1999. With this bleakeconomic outlook and recent successon PARCO project, Descon and JGCdecided to join hands to establish a jointventure engineering company whichwould provide world-class services toboth parent companies in a verycompetitive market place. J-Tech (Pvt.)Limited started operation in June-2000with a strength of around 250 staffmembers. JGC deputed a group of fivestaff members in resident cadre to
