BEYOND THE WALLSW h a t H a p p e n s H e r e D o e s n ' t S t a y H e r e

Talk about ‘beyond the walls’! St. Patrick Parish and De Mazenod Door Outreach, the parish’s registered non-profit charitable organization, have been moving far beyond these walls practically since the outreach ministry began. From the partnerships within the com-munity and beyond, the supporters, the corporations and the volunteers – there are so many people wanting to help.In the beginning it was clear, so very clear that those who were coming to the church were hungry and while that’s still the case, what else is evident is that they ar-en’t just hungry for food. They need nourishment in the form of acceptance and love. They need support and someone to care for them. They need direction. They need help.So many of our guests need mental health care sup-port and assistance that starts with offering encourage-ment. It starts with validation. With the assurance that here, they will be treated like regular human beings, with kindness. If, for just a moment, we could put our-selves in their shoes: having little belongings, no place to sleep at night, no place to call ‘home’. Just imagine how that in itself would affect your mental wellbeing. If there ever was a need for social justice, this is the place. This inner city community. You have seen our poor. Our disregarded. Those who have been ostracised for a hundred different reasons. Those sidelined human beings are accepted here, and welcomed with open

arms. We take the time necessary to hear their voices and if we’re lucky, to listen to their stories. How did they ended up where they are now and what brought them to this point in their lives? Some of these stories are heartbreaking. So many, through no fault of their own, have been hurt and/or abused and this is the result of it. However, if we only listen and never do anything about it, then what good are we doing? St. Patrick Parish doesn’t shy away from adversity or hard work. Instead, we have shown resilience in the face of adversity. We have faced challenges head on and taken the steps necessary to make change happen. At some point you have to practice what you preach and sincerely answer the call to compassion, by loving oth-ers as Christ loves us! We are doing just that! De Mazenod Door Outreach has expanded to include ‘De Mazenod Door Housing’ which at the moment in-cludes a home for 6 homeless men dealing with men-tal health challenges. Eugene’s Place is a congregate living house which has been purchased and funded by philanthropists Garth & Lynette Brown, and is located only a block from the parish. These gentlemen can call this their ‘forever home’. At Eugene’s Place they will be offered direction and encouragement for any and all of the supports they need. First we had to feed them. That was the immediate need, but we knew if we truly wanted to help people, it couldn’t just end there. There’s so much more Church outside of its magnificent walls. It begins at the altar, but it never ends there. In-side is where we can pray for miracles. Outside is where we can make them happen.

What an amazing Thanksgiving Day at De Mazenod Door Outreach! Although we weren’t able to gath-er around tables as we have in the past, this was still a wonderful day of giving thanks! Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Parish sponsored the event. Fr. Bill Trusz, pastor at IHM, and a number of folks from both IHM & our parish came to volunteer to serve. Guests gathered outside excitedly waiting for their incredible meals (to-go, of course!). Fr. Tony began the event by blessing the food and all who gath-ered. All Covid-19 protocols were followed through-out the event.

Other things of note that made our Thanksgiving event possible and event better include:

• 14 turkeys were roasted free of charge once again by our friends at Genuine Bakery! They were so generous that the turkey came with a river of gravy. Special thanks to Mama Francis!

• A giveaway table of pet food donated by our friends at VCA Eastside Animal Hospital in Stoney Creek was set up (such a blessing for our guests with fur-babies)!

This truly was a beautiful Thanksgiving feast, fit for and celebrated by 457 ‘thankful’ guests!

PRESS RELEASE: De Mazenod Door Outreach Ministry adds Housing Support

St. Patrick Church ministry partners with local investors to provide housing for Hamilton’s poor.

Hamilton— October 14, 2020 — Today, the De Mazenod Door Outreach (DMDO) ministry announces a new housing initiative to help the poor and marginalized in inner-city Hamilton. With the help of local investors, the outreach ministry will now further its support for Hamilton’s most vulnerable, offering affordable housing and support to move people safely off the streets.

“Our goal is to help alleviate poverty in the heart of the city of Hamilton,” said Fr. Tony O’Dell, “There is simply no better way to do that than helping people in need secure a forever home.”

The first home dedicated to the initiative is named Eugene’s Place, in honor of St. Eugene De Mazenod, patron saint of the poor. It will provide accommodation for up to six individuals. There are currently already 4 tenants who will be calling Eugene’s Place their home. The house was purchased by philanthropists Garth and Lynette Brown. “We are all called to love our neighbours and share the gifts we are blessed with. This investment in homes is really an investment in people. Together we can build stronger, healthier communities with love and compassion.” shares Garth enthusiastically.

The housing initiative will also include an apartment named Eugene’s Pad, dedicated to helping landed immigrant families transition to a new and better life in Canada. The apartment will welcome its first guests this fall, a Filipino family eager to begin their life together in Hamilton.

More than just housing, the initiative will offer residents the necessary supports to ensure access to healthcare, education, employment, and social services. “We know that it will take much more than a roof over someone’s head,” says Sherri Rameriz, Outreach Coordinator for DMDO ministry. “We are committed to helping our tenants access the wraparound support in the community needed to keep them off the streets and secure in their home,” adds Ramirez.

With the homelessness crisis rising in Hamilton, the DMDO ministry is committed to expanding its housing initiative over time. Projects like these can only happen through the development and cultivation of intentional partnerships with community-minded individuals and organizations. We invite you to take a courageous step to support and share this important initiative to make a real and meaningful difference in our community. Contact [email protected] for more information.

The official launch of this initiative will happen on Sunday, Oct 18, 2020 at 3 PM at St. Patrick Parish. Attendance to this event is by invitation only, however, it will be live-streamed via the St. Patrick Parish website (stpatrickshamilton.ca) and facebook page (fb.me/stpatrickshamilton).

Isaiah’s proclamation of Cyrus, King of Persia, conqueror of the ancient Near East, as the Anointed of God must have caused a few waves; likely more of a tsunami! Imagine God choosing a pagan emperor to fulfill God’s will for God’s people. At the very least, this proclamation by the prophet would cause his listeners to re-examine their world view. The idea that God’s care extends to all people is not new – we have the story of Jonah being sent by God to Nineveh to proclaim a message of repentance. Jonah balked at the idea that God would want a pagan community to repent and be saved and had to experience a conversion of heart himself before he could fulfill the mandate given to him by God.

Jesus’ proclamation of the Good News of God’s unconditional love also proved a stumbling block. Like so many before them, the religious leaders balked at the idea and sought to trap Jesus in some grievous error so they could discredit him and do away with him. Even though the religious leaders were not willing to hear Jesus and respond, many did. Jesus chose disciples to continue his work, and they too were unlikely instruments. They were not of the religious or political elite, they were ordinary folks, among them fishermen, a tax collector, a zealot and others who had no particular standing in the society of their day.

Jesus continues to call people to discipleship and mission today. I believe that he is still calling disciples to the vowed life and priesthood as well as all the other vocations. No matter what the call might be for each of us individually we need to trust that God is choosing and calling us, as unlikely instruments as we might judge ourselves to be. Whether it was Cyrus of Persia, Jonah the prophet, Simon the fisherman, Matthew the tax collector … and the list goes on … God always provides the gifts that are needed to live out the call and to be instruments of God’s love. God is calling each of us, God is calling you, calling me – do we have listening ears, open hearts and trust that as God calls, God also provides? Do we have the openness and trust to respond to the call?

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

World Mission Sunday falls on October 18th this year. It is one Sunday when the global Church comes together to support mission. The Holy Father invites all Catholics to contribute to the special collection for “Missio”, his charity for World Missions. Every dollar donated goes to supporting missionaries as they work in communities around the world to support churches, schools and hospitals - regardless of their religious background or belief. You can support Missio by visiting their website at missio.orgIf you are unable to offer financial support at this time, your prayers are just as valued. Please lift up a “World Mission Rosary” for World Mission Sunday. Each colour on the mission rosary is symbolic. Green represents the forests and grasslands of Africa. Red calls to mind the fire and faith that brought missionaries to the Americas. Europe is signified by white beads as it is the home of the Holy Father and becuase white is the colour of the vestments he wears. The islands of the Pacific are represented by the blue beads. Finally, the yellow beads symbolize the morning light of the East; and the beginning of civilization for Asia and the Middle East.

The Missionary Rosary is prayed:

1. The 1st Mission Mystery: The visit of the Magi, the first missionaries. (Matthew 2:1, 11).

2. The 2nd Mission Mystery: Jesus talks with the Samaritan woman, cross-ing boarders; breaking down boundaries. (John 4:28).

3. The 3rd Mission Mystery: Jesus cures the centurion’s servant; acts of healing and service. (Luke 7:2).

4. The 4th Mission Mystery: The conversion of Paul; expanding the faith to the gentiles, the “other” and thus the world. (Acts 9:20).

5. The 5th Mission Mystery: Jesus sends out His disciples, we are called to mission and to minister to others. (Mark 16:15).

Hail Holy Queen…..

OBLATE MISSIONS: WE GIVE YOU THANKS, O LORD!

Among the many blessings of Oblate life, we praise God for the gift of faith. This weekend, we, in the Catholic world, celebrate Mission Sunday. As St. Paul says, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” Rom 10:14

We are invited by Pope Francis to pray for and assist the mission of the church finan-cially through the Mission Sunday Collection.

We as Canadian Catholics have also much to celebrate as we reflect on the 175 years of Evangelization from the Red River Valley west, by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and several Religious Congregations of women.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

OBLATE MISSIONS: WE GIVE YOU THANKS, O LORD!

We invite you, as members of our Oblate Parish, to show as special concern for our Mission work by becoming com-mitted with us in partnership with the poor through our Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate (MAMI). Become a member. Especially we reach out to you with younger children. It will be a great teaching tool with your children: “How do we follow Jesus today?” One: Pray for our missionary efforts today in various parts of the world. Secondly: Financially support our missions with a regular donation to MAMI.

Read the “Oblate Spirit” booklet. It is available in both English and French on the OMI website. It will also be available to you as you leave mass this weekend.

The Oblates of Canada have had a very strong commitment to the missions of Peru and Kenya over the past years, both financially and with Canadian Missionaries. Through our laity that has partnered with us and the poor, tremen-dous hope has been given to the poor by supporting their community projects:

• Construction of homes and chapels and the renovation of schools, civic institutions and first responder barracks.

• Another landmark project in Peru was the construction and fund-ing for Santa Clotilde Hospital and staffing by Dr. (Fr.) Moe Schro-eder OMI and others, in Napo River in the remote Peruvian Ama-zon region of Loreto.

• Oblates from Canada began the new mission in Kenya twen-ty-three years ago. With the support of the laity in partnership with us and the poor, many dreams have been realized:

• medical dispensaries and HIV/AIDS clinic• construction of several secondary schools and assisting student fees• numerous water projects including Mt. Kenya Water As-sociation project that was funded with a generous donation from a MAMI family, CIDA and the labour from Kenyan Mem-bers of the project. (A million-dollar project serving 2,500 small tea farms) • Work with prisoners, orphans, women’s commercial bak-ery, posha mills, churches..

“Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God. Accompanying him were the Twelve and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, Jo-anna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources.” We too need you and many others to provide for us out of your resources. We are so very grateful to those who jour-ney with us from one village to another.

Blessings from the MAMI Staff and the Oblate Leadership of Lacombe Canada.
