Dear Stanner Families,
It gives me great pleasure to write to you with Thanksgiving and Advent season just beginning! Our school
year has gotten off to a great start and there is much to be thankful for and a great deal to celebrate. We are
very thankful that Molloy is the special place that it is and grateful for our Stanner parents choosing to send
their children to Stanner High! On a day to day basis, we witness inspiring events of caring and educational
excellence in the marist community.
I am excited to announce that, after a long absence, the Speech and Debate team is, once again, successfully
competing in the Brooklyn Queens Catholic Forensic League. We even have the honor of hosting a competition
of this prestigious organization in our own building on December 14th. In typical Stanner fashion our students
have jumped right in and found immediate success. Other new ventures such as the VEX Robotics Club, ASL
(American Sign Language) Club, our Virtual Enterprise class, and the new Freshman Introduction to Computer
Science course have all started well.
Our sports teams have reminded us that Molloy is the home of champions. The Boys Varsity Soccer team
and the Girls Tennis team were both Brooklyn/Queens Champions and State Finalists. Girls Varsity Soccer
earned finalist distinction in Brooklyn/Queens and the Boys JV Soccer team was only one goal away from a City
Championship. Stanner Spirit has also been on display during successful events such as the Walkathon and our
Annual Alumni Reunion and we will be getting into the true holiday spirit soon as we start our annual charity
drives.
Our Parent/Teacher evening will be held on Tuesday, November 26th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. If you can not
attend, student grades can always be found on Plus Portals and all report cards have been emailed to your
Stanner email addresses. I also invite you to consider attending a performance of Little Women by the Stanner
Players or one of our wonderful Christmas concerts. Details of both shows will be in the pages of the newsletter.
On behalf of everyone at Molloy I would like to wish you and your families a Blessed Thanksgiving and a Merry
Christmas!
Sincerely,
Dr. Darius PenikasPrincipal

How Averages are Calculated The average at the bottom of your child’s report card is weighted to reflect both how often the course meets, and whether it is an honors course or an Advanced Placement course. The average cannot be checked by just adding up the marks that appear and dividing by the number of marks. Generally, courses that meet every other day are weighted as one-half. Religion, for example, meets every other day, so it counts only half as much in your child’s average as courses that meet every day. Music, Computer, Health, and Art count for 1 unit when doing the vertical average for a particular marking period. But they will only count 1/2 unit when we eventually calculate the record card average, since they only meet for 1/2 year. If your child has honors subjects, note that the marks in those subjects are not weighted - the mark that appears on the report card is whatever mark the teacher assigns. However, in the computation of your child’s weighted average, honors subjects are multiplied by 1.05; Advanced Placement courses are multiplied by 1.07. Since colleges use the average for admission, this ensures that the additional work that honors or AP courses entail is reflected by an additional boost to your child’s average.
Course MP1 How grade is adjusted to calculate the column avgReligion 9 90 0.50 x 90 = 45.0 (meets every other day)English 9 Honors 92 1.05 x 92 = 96.6Algebra Honors 84 1.05 x 84 = 88.2Computer Applics SPR (meets in spring)Global Studies Hon 98 1.05 x 98 = 102.9Spanish 1 86 1.00 x 86 = 86.0Biology Honors 80 1.05 x 80 = 84.0Music Theory 94 1.00 x 94 = 94.0
To compute the marking period average at the bottom of the report card:
Average = 45.0 + 96.6 + 88.2 + 102.9 + 86.0 + 84.0 + 94.0 = 596.7 = 91.8

Parent - Teacher Conferences: Tuesday, Nov. 26th 4:00pm - 7:00pm Parent-Teacher conferences are often of concern to students, parents, and teachers. Students may be wary of parents and teachers talking about them behind closed doors. Parents may feel uncomfortable about entering their children’s classrooms to listen to reports about conduct and class work. Teachers may feel uneasy about revealing problems to anxious parents. If your son or daughter is experiencing academic problems, it is important for you and his or her teacher to create a working relationship that fosters the student’s learning. Open communication between parents and teachers can only help the student.
The Purpose of a Conference: Conferences help develop a partnership between parents and teachers:
• To allow teachers to better understand your child through an exchange of information with you. • To help parents better interpret school programs and receive reports of pupil progress.• To allow mutual discussion, between parent and teacher, of a student’s situation in order to tailor solutions to individual problems.
Parent Tips: • Please arrive as early as possible. This will give you the best chance of speaking with the teachers you wish to see.• Decide in advance what you want to ask the teacher. If your son or daughter is very successful in a particular class, a parent-teacher conference is not necessary. If there is academic difficulty, it’s more productive to avoid generalities. Jot down specific things you want to discuss.• Ask your son or daughter if there is anything he or she would like you to bring up with his or her teacher.• Be ready and willing to answer teachers’ questions. A teacher will not pry invasively. However, more detailed information often assists a teacher who is working to meet your child’s needs.
Parents can keep up to date by viewing their child’s grades by accessing Plus Portals. The link for Plus Portals can be found on the school website www.molloyhs.org.
