Dear people of God at Grace Lutheran Church ,
The season of Lent begins with Ash
Wednesday on February 26th. The
altar cloths will change to purple as
we enter into this season of fasting,
prayer, and repentance. Lent is a
time for us to learn the story of
Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem and the
cross. During this season I invite and
encourage you to make your faith a
priority. We will be offering you
several ways to deepen your faith
this Lenten season that I invite you
to participate in:
We will provide take home
devotional materials for you to
do.
We will gather each Wednesday
night at 6pm for supper and
a study of scripture lessons
this season.
We will be collecting items to
share with the most vulnerable
in our community and packing
them to pass out on April 5th.
As we journey into lent we hope that
you might feel the power of the Holy
Spirit working in your life as we
remember the gift of grace that
Jesus died to give each and every
one of us.
God’s peace be with you!
Pastor Cassie

FEBRUARY WORSHIP PARTICIPANTS
ALTAR GUILD: Loretta Wise and Margie Venable
USHERS: Bob Herman, Michael Edinger, Richard Edinger, Leah Pendergrass
Want to make new friends? Do you feel alone during the week? You are always welcome to join the Lunch Bunch Wednesdays at 12:30 at Loflin’s restaurant in Thomas-
Welcome to our New Members who joined our congrega-tion on January 26th we welcome joyfully to our church family: Mary Lynn Hastings, Kathy and Elton Miller, and Robert and Melody Sink!
“I love this Church and the sense of community here.”
Have you ever found yourself saying that or thinking it?
Who would you like to be part of our community?
Who do you know that could benefit from being a part of our church?
This year, the beginning of a new decade we want to think intentionally about encouraging more people to become a part of our church, because being a part of a church community is a great blessing. To do this we will need everyone’s help each month. We will be sharing with you some new ways to help us encourage new people to be a part of our community. We will be sharing ways to make people feel welcome, ways to support our church, and ways to invite someone to church. We hope that you will support us by helping us make Grace Lutheran as welcoming as it can be and sharing about your church with others!
Our Goal at the end of 2020 is to welcome 20 new members into our community, hence the taskforce name 20 in 20. To do this we will need all of your support to make Grace live into its name as a place where people can grow, follow, and connect!
SENIOR SAINT SPOTLIGHT
Spotlight on Jim McClain
Jim was born in Charlotte, North Carolina to James and Marga-
ret McClain on July 9, 1946, a good ol’ Baptist family. He grew
up at Midwood Baptist Church and attended regularly through
college. As a youngster, Jim was introduced to the great out-
doors and sports. From rodeo to dove hunts, to football games
to motorcycles. Jim said, “I had a lot of good experiences and a
whale of a time during those years.”
Jim graduated from UNC-CH and then came a job, marriage,
and three children. “After 14 years as a banker, that was
enough!” he said. Next was on to a sales career in the boating industry for the 25 plus years. All
the while, they were chasing titles in motocross. Using that experience to build a successful
race car team training business for 20 plus years.
He says he met the love of his life, Loretta, almost seven years ago. She charmingly invited him
to Grace Lutheran Church. When he found out about his cancer, the Grace Lutheran Family
shared their love and support. He said, “It was an overwhelming and strong love.” Now, Jim is
on a journey to share his God given talents with Grace Lutheran, any way he can. He leaves us
with this advice: “Don’t let anybody tell you retirement is boring.”
Our thanks to Mary Sullivan for this month’s Senior Saint Spotlight.

NEWS FROM THE FELLOWSHIP/OUTREACH COMMITTEE
The Fellowship/Outreach committee has put together a set of procedures to ensure we can
effectively and efficiently minister to a family when they request a funeral reception. We
have also re-instituted 5 Care Teams, made up of 6 to 8 volunteers and a Team Leader to be
responsible for hosting a funeral reception on a rolling basis. So as not to burden any one team
and to be fair, a set menu has been included that allows a family to choose menu items based
on their preferences. If you have any questions about this information, please see anyone on
this committee.

Fellowship Funeral Procedures - December 2019
The Fellowship Committee will define teams of volunteers to coordinate and host a reception
following a funeral service at Grace Lutheran for the family and others the family invite.
The Pastor will communicate to the Fellowship Chairman if the family requests a recep-
tion, expected times of the service and reception and approximate number of people
to attend.
The Fellowship chairman contacts the appropriate team by email with date, time and
rough count of people attending.
Fellowship will offer a set menu of items to be provided. If the family wants more they are
invited to provide additional food. The family should work with the appropriate team
members to ensure there is no duplication and work out delivery details of any food
the family provides.
Standard menu items provided by Fellowship Care Teams include the following:
Main course items: Please choose 5 from this list
Chips and dip
Hot or cold dip with crackers and/or veggies
Deviled eggs
Cheese & cracker platter
Sausage balls
Mini quiches
Small sandwiches such as: pimiento cheese, ham, chicken salad, etc.

Cookies
Brownies
Store bought sheet cake
Fruit platter
Drinks: Please choose 2 beverages (water will also be provided)
Cheerwine punch (cold)
Wassail (hot)
Coffee
Lemonade
Iced Tea
Leftover food goes to the family, then to the volunteers. The team in charge of the event
will disperse any leftovers appropriately. Leftovers should not be stored in the GLC
refrigerator or elsewhere on the property.
NEW MINISTRY SURVEY PLANS
Hey y’all last fall we asked you to do a survey about new ministry plans for 2020 and I’m happy to share with you how we have planned to integrate your wishes based on votes into our ministry in 2020.
#1: An earlier Christmas eve service. In 2020 we will do two Christmas Eve services we will still do our 11PM service (with special music beginning at 10:30) but we will add an ad-ditional service before dark for families and those who do not drive at night.
#2: Dinner Church. Dinner church is where we worship around a meal. This year we will do our first dinner church service on Maundy Thursday April 9th at 7pm. We will share a pot-luck and begin our worship in the fellowship hall. Stay tuned for more information.
#3: A Bible Study. There were a few people who wanted a morning Bible Study and some that wanted an evening Bible Study. We will begin that in March in the book of Genesis. We will meet Thursday at 7am for those who want to meet in the morning and 7pm for those who prefer an evening for an hour of Bible Study. Save the date for March 5th and brush up on your Genesis knowledge by reading the book of Genesis in February. You don’t need to read ahead to get something out of this Study.
#4 An Adult Confirmation Course. Sunday Evenings beginning after Easter April 19th to May 21st. Adults who have had confirmation classes or haven’t are invited as we study the Lutheran Confessions, the Bible, and what makes us who we are as Lutheran Christians. We will meet for 6 Sundays from 7-8:30 pm. Following our course participants will be invited to affirm their baptism in worship on Pentecost , May 31st. Stay tuned for more information and a sign-up sheet in the narthex. - Pastor Cassie
OBSERVING LENT
Join us as we begin the season of Lent where we learn about Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem and his death on the cross.
The season begins with the imposition of ashes, a remind-er that without the love of Christ, we are just dust. We will be offering drive thru ashes—come by the church parking lot on your way to school or work and Pastor Cassie will offer ashes while you sit in the car or join us for worship at 7pm.
REBUILDING THE CHOIR LOFT
Dear Grace,
Subject: Rebuilding the choir loft (date to be determined, looking at late February or early March)
Opportunity: Increasing the choir loft side only, it will allow for overcrowding of choir members,
better climate control as members can spread out a little bit more, more room for the organist to
move from organ to piano, and start our beautification of Grace property.
Scope of Work: Remove the wood paneling on both sides of the entrance door, remove back
short pew, and remove organ, piano, and three choir pews, remove front wall by organ and move
it to 48” away from new back pew location, build new organ/piano platform 6” lower so we can
add new choir row, new platform to have double 3⁄4” tongue & groove flooring, build new steps
into choir loft, sheetrock all areas, install new flooring.
Goal is to have all pews, equipment, and old paneling removed by Friday evening. Would like to
have about 5-6 individuals for this task. Saturday morning start the demolition of the platform
and building a new wall. We would like 8-10 individuals, whether all day or morning/afternoon
shift for these activities. Skill sets required for Saturday would be two people to do all cutting, two
people as runners (taking dimensions from inside builders to cutters outside), two builders/
measurers inside, two people to hang sheetrock. Saturday evening move piano and pews back
onto platform for Sunday morning service.
Finish trim work and such (may hire this portion out) during the week.
Construction Items: Below are the tools, labor, and materials required to rebuild our choir loft
prior to the new organ arriving. Please sign up for our weekend project and list any skill sets you
have to help make this happen n the sign up in the coffee area.
