DATE THEME VERSE

May 5 Be prepared to tell others about

Jesus. Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season. (6 Timothy 8:6)

May 12 Jesus saves us. They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.” (Acts 56 :75)

May 19 When we live by God’s spirit,

God changes us.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, pa-tience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentle-ness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

May 26 God teaches us how to love.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. (1 Corinthians 13:4-5)

I n an attempt to connect the adults and children of Grace just a bit more, I will be letting people know the theme and verse of the week in our children’s Sunday school classes. I would love it if the adults would join in memorizing or at least talking about it to the children as they see each other in the halls. Listed

below are the themes and scripture for May.

H ow do we get people to do the right thing? It would be great if we could get our church members to come to church more regularly, to give more, to read their Bibles more, and other things. Our usual tendency is to devel-op rules aimed at promoting the desired behavior, even if that strategy does not have a good success rate over

time. Why don't rules change behavior? God gave His law, and it is good. But, it also has been weakened by our sinful na-ture. (Romans 8:3 and Galatians 3:21) Consider this: When God gave His law He wrote it on stone tablets and set it before people. See Deuteronomy 4:8. (Literally: "...ordinances, judgments, righteousnesses, and instructions that I give before your face.") "You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink." Something in front of our faces may be very goods for us, but that does not mean we will adopt it as our own, even if it is right under our noses. God addressed that problem in Jeremiah 31:31-34. There God promised a new covenant. He would write His instruc-tions on the hearts of the people and in their innermost parts instead of on tablets of stone. It would not be something merely set in front of people, but would be something internal deeply a part of them. It would not be like the old cove-nant which the people broke. Still, He promised to be their God and forgave their failure to keep His commandments. We now live under that new covenant. Ezekiel 36:24-27 repeats some of these things, but adds others. God washes His people with clean water and they are clean. He removes a heart of stone from people and replaces it with a heart of flesh. He puts His Spirit into our innermost parts. God's Spirit moves us to follow His statutes and to keep His commandments so that we might to do them. Our task is not about making more effective rules that address people from outside themselves, but about God work-ing changes in people from the inside. We do want to see results. We want to see changes in people. But, God works in His way in His time. That can require more time than we would like to wait. We could pray for people in need of growth and encourage them. We know God's Spirit changes hearts. He works through the Gospel of God's free forgiveness for the sake of Christ. Think of the sinful woman who broke into the dinner where Jesus was a guest. Jesus said of her, "She loves much because she has been forgiven much." (Luke 7:36-50) In addition to praying for others to grow in their Christian commitment, we could consider becoming friends with someone whom we might influence for growth in following Jesus. Helping others follow Jesus helps us grow in following Jesus, too.

Johns Hopkins Cancer Prevention Update—Part 1

E very person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the de-

tectable size. Cancer cells occur between 6-10 times in a person’s lifetime. When the person’s immune system is strong, the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors. When a person has cancer, it indi-cates the person has nutritional deficiencies, which could be due to genetic, environmental, food, and lifestyle factors. By changing the diet, eating healthy, and taking supplements, the immune system will then be strengthened. Chemotherapy poisons cancer cells and healthy cells in the bone marrow and can cause organ damage, like the liver, kidneys, heart, and lungs. Radiation, while destroying cancer cells, also burns, scars, and damages healthy cells, tissues, and organs. Chemotherapy and radiation initially reduce the tumor size. However, when the body has reached a toxic level from chemotherapy and radiation, the immune system is either compromised or destroyed. The person will then develop infections or complications. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a sur-vivor. Anger, unforgiveness, and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit, to relax and to enjoy life.
