From the Chair: Supporting the Cancer Detection Trust

Richard and I were fortunate to be visited this week by key fundraisers from the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust (DCDT).

This crucial charity has supported Team DBTH since the 1970s, raising more than £10 million over the years. Starting in 1972 by donating a ‘bronchoscope’, which is used to look inside lungs and allows health professionals to take samples for further analysis, the DCDT have since purchased around a 100 pieces of specialist medical equipment for Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI). It is no understatement to say that we, as well as local residents, owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the charity. Most recently, DCDT have almost raised £500,000 in order to purchase an additional CT Scanner for DRI. I am pleased to announce that they are nearly at the finish line, with just £50,000 left to go. As you may be aware, we are currently at capacity with our current CT Scanner, and therefore this additional machine would hugely benefit the Trust, as well as patients in our care. This is a very exciting time for the Trust and it is anticipated that the Cancer Detection Trust Scanner will be one of two new machines to be housed in an enhanced suite close to the Emergency Department at DRI. We are expecting to hear soon whether the Department of Health will agree to these plans. If they do, our new-look scanning service could be up and running by Spring next year. In addition to cancer detection, it will support our stroke care, which will be particularly important as part of the work we’re involved in with the Integrated Care System (ICS). In the coming weeks we will be working closely with the DCDT in order to help them raise the final £50,000 and I hope you’ll help us in these efforts. Whether you’re thinking of a sponsored walk, a tasty bake sale or something equally enticing, you can donate by heading to www.dcdt.co.uk

Hello my name is...

As an organisation, we encourage members of Team DBTH to be approachable and friendly, so that our patients always feel as comfortable as possible during their stay.

To that end, one simple-but-effective thing that we ask of staff is that they properly introduce themselves. This might not seem like much, but it makes a big difference to a patient’s experience, letting them know that they are in capable and professional hands. It also assures them that they will receive good, person-centred care, in an environment that treats them as an individual.

It is with all of this in mind, that the Trust launched its ‘’Hello My Name is’’ campaign. As the title suggests, this scheme is all about personally relating to patients, so that they know who is looking after them. The campaign promotes the value of a good introduction and generally encourages clinical staff to sit down with their patients and spend time with them, even if it just means sitting down for a cup of tea.

Which brings us to the St Leger team, who have taken it upon themselves to get some new mugs that clearly display their names. Not only does this brilliant idea serve to reinforce the ‘’Hello My Name is’’ campaign- giving the patients the information they need - but it also benefits staff as well, reminding them to go back to the basics of care and practice high quality communication.

Please welcome our new Patient Research Ambassador

The Research and Development (R&D) team are pleased to announce that they have just recruited their first Patient Research Ambassador, Peter Abell.

Peter, who is already a Public Governor at DBTH, will be taking on this extra role and working with the R&D team to promote the importance of clinical research. A crucial part of this will entail liaising with the public, engaging with visitors in our outpatient clinics and across the Trust’s multiple sites, in order to get them involved with research as well.

To kick things off, Peter will be exploring our hospitals over the next few weeks, gathering information and seeing where there is

opportunity to raise greater awareness about the benefits of clinical research. With that in mind, if you see Peter on his travels, please welcome him and assist with any queries he may have. As time goes on, and as the research strategy evolves, it is expected that Peter’s voluntary role will develop in scope.

Research Week from 1 October

At the beginning of October, DBTH will be hosting a week-long event dedicated to raising the profile of research within the organisation.

In support of this event, a number of drop-in sessions, information boards and showcases have been organised to take place between 1 October and 5 October. These have been scheduled across our sites at Doncaster, Bassetlaw and Mexborough, so that everyone has the opportunity to take part.

The hope is that these sessions will illuminate how research is a vital function, not just within our Trust locally, but also within the NHS as a whole. Indeed, attendees will come to appreciate how- among other things- research can:

!

• Drive and maintain efficient clinical services • Increase evidence based practice• Improve quality, safety and efficiency• Facilitate better patient outcomes• Promote clinical excellence

• Advance healthcare• Enable staff recruitment and retention• Generate income• Enhance the Trust’s reputation

All of this and more will be covered by the event. Although the target audience will be nurses, AHPs and midwives, all staff are welcome to attend the sessions detailed below:

Getting your flu jab? Flu season is right around the corner and we're busy making preparations.

As a Trust it’s important our staff get the jab in order to protect themselves, their family and our more vulnerable patients from the flu virus. The vaccine helps the body create antibodies which in turn help in the fight against infection.

The flu vaccine protects against a number of flu strains which research indicates will be the most common during the next few months. Although the effectiveness of the vaccine can vary, if you’re in contact with patients on a daily basis it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Join the fight! Let us know if you're planning on getting your flu jab this year by taking this short survey

Flu season is nearIn September we will begin our super-powered battle to vaccinate Team DBTH from flu, and we need your help!

We still require a number of Peer Vaccinators to help bolster our ranks of flu fighters and administer the jab to our frontline staff.

Ensuring that members of the team get the vaccine is of huge importance to the Trust, not only to keep staff fit and healthy, but also patients in our care.

If you are interested in becoming a Peer Vaccinator, please get in touch with Mandy Ostle.

Join the fight and help us vaccinate 80% of frontline staff this autumn!

Essential upgrade to Bleep System On Thursday 6 September, an essential upgrade will take place to improve the Trust bleep system.

The necessary work for this is expected to occur between 7am and 8am, meaning that the bleep system will be inaccessible during this period. Please note that this downtime will only affect routine calls at DRI and Montagu. Meanwhile, Bassetlaw hospital, and the rest of the telephone system will work as normal.

Please be assured that whilst this upgrade is happening, you can still make any essential bleeps by contacting the Switchboard.

Telecoms would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, however this work is critical to the Trust’s infrastructure.

Pre-Op Assessment at Bassetlaw has MovedThe Pre-Operative Assessment Service at Bassetlaw has moved to Ward A5. This is now their base where they will hold Pre-op clinics. Please note that all telephone numbers remain the same. Meanwhile, if you have any queries, then the main contact number is ext. 572260.

As part of an on-going Procurement exercise, the Trust will be replacing a total of 150 Syringe Pumps in the near future.

On that note, a drop-in session will soon be held to give Bassetlaw colleagues the opportunity to take a closer look at the new Pump. Here, staff will be able to ask any questions that they may have about the Perfusor Compact Plus Syringe and will also have the chance to speak to the supplier as well.

Details on the session can be found below:

Location: Kilton Room, The Bassetlaw HubDate: Friday 14 September 2018, 9am to 1pm

Clinical Admin Review update

The review started in August 2016. The purpose has been to refresh this function so that it supports all Care Groups (soon to be Divisions) in the Trust, providing a patient-focused and top-notch admin facility.

If you cast your mind back, it was our ambition to make a positive difference to the working life of our admin staff, building upon the things that work, and improving the things that don't.

The reasons for the review are:• To enhance consistency of our patient pathways

between areas and departments• To provide a coherent structure for the role, with

room for advancement and development• To improve operational performance, communication and data collection• To truly define the role of an admin at the Trust – currently we have over 60 job descriptions for

members of Team DBTH doing similar roles• To empower our admins to apply their skill and expertise so that they can deliver excellent patient

care across the organisation, as efficiently as possible.

Important documents: • The Clinical Admin Review presentation (delivered at Bassetlaw and DRI in late July and August• Consultation letter• Consultation Document

Job descriptions and personal specifications:• Clinical Apprentice (JD/PS)• Clinical Receptionist (JD/PS)• Clinical Typist (JD/PS)• Medical Secretary (JD/PS)• Operational Service Manager (JD/PS)• Service Manager (JD/PS)• Team Leader (JD/PS)• Waiting List Coordinator (JD/PS)

An in depth Q&A is available on the website here. This answers some of the questions we have received about the admin review thus far.

NCS raise money for Bassetlaw

A group of young people participating in the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme have been raising money to buy toys and games for children who attend Bassetlaw Hospital. Thirteen students from across the region have managed to raise a whopping £315, which has been used to purchase toys for the Children’s Assessment Unit and the children’s waiting area in the hospital’s Emergency Department. The students raised the money through a ‘Go Fund Me’ profile. Fran Heald, an NCS student from Retford, said: “We visited the Children’s Ward and met with the Play Leaders and decided we wanted to purchase toys for the outdoor play area. We’ve purchased a basketball net, basketballs, footballs and new scooters which brighten up the play area. Thank you also to anyone who has donated toys and games to the ward following our appeal.” The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a voluntary personal and social development programme for 15 to 17 year olds. Anne Bacon, Play and Activity Team Leader, said: “On behalf of the Trust, I want to say ‘thank you’ to the students participating in the NCS programme. The toys they have purchased will make a real difference to patients attending the hospital either on the Children’s Assessment Unit or in the Emergency Department. It’s always lovely to see young people getting involved and supporting their local hospital. Many of the students we talked to said they had been patients themselves at some point over the years and they felt this project was their way of giving back and saying thank you.”

Giving Quality Improvement a boost You may be aware that we are one of only seven trusts that have been successful in applying to be part of a national programme that will give additional support to the Trust’s existing Quality Improvement (QI) Team.

At the Trust, we already have a lot of good QI practice but this programme gives us the opportunity to develop further, via additional support and standardisation. In turn, this will help us to ensure that improvement is seen as the way we do things at DBTH. It’s crucial that the expertise, experience and ideas of front line staff and patients shape this work.

In the short to medium term, we expect to deliver benefits in quality of care, staff engagement, finance and delivery. By extension, we will make strides towards becoming the safest trust in England, outstanding in all we do and we want all our staff to know how they contribute to this vision.

Our Executive Team are leading by example, and are currently undertaking ‘coaching training’ and other related bits of homework, which in turn will help the directors support QI work within our related directorates and divisions.

The QI team are working with a number of departments within the hospital and with partner organisations and we are about to start an exciting and important QI project in Trauma and Orthopaedics, supporting them to further improve the care they provide for our patients.

More updates will follow, so please keep checking Buzz, our Facebook group and other communications to keep up with developments, progress and also how you can get involved– so watch this space #creatingoutstandingTandO

This is an incredibly exciting time for the Trust and we hope you will join us wholeheartedly as we take steps to become ‘Outstanding’ in all that we do.
