DAY SCHOOL TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION St. Peter Lutheran School Hemlock, Michigan

Besides the following qualifications and descriptions, the teacher will also adhere to all policies

and practices in the Teacher Handbook of Rules (THR). I. PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS

A. Has regular communion and church attendance, attends faculty devotions, and all full time (all day) teachers are members of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

B. Is sensitive to needs of others, cares about others' feelings; shows Christian concern for all;

maintains confidences; is respectful of others. C. Uses correct language; is tactful; courteous; an effective listener; self-expressive; uses correct

written form. D. Is able to articulate objectives of the Lutheran school clearly; enthusiastically evidences love for

teaching children; attends, participates, and is visible in the functions of the congregation; is involved in community activities where time and interest allow; and publicly compliments and supports co-

workers.

II. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

A. Continues to advance professionally through reading, conference attendance, observation, review of textbooks, further graduate study, etc. and is encouraged to hold a membership in professional

organizations and associations (e.g. L.E.A., M.E.A., and N.E.A.).

B. Is certified by the state (a copy of the certificate is kept in the St. Peter Personnel File and a copy must be sent to the Michigan District Office).

C. Has a wholesome parish viewpoint, exhibiting interest in the total educational effort of St. Peter Lutheran Church and takes an active interest in the church at large.

D. Is a graduate of a LCMS synodical school or is willing to complete the work toward a colloquy from the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod within five (5) years from the date of hire.

III. ADMINISTRATION RESPONSIBILITIES A. Is responsible for assisting the principal in implementing policies adopted by the congregation and

Board of Christian Education. B. Is responsible for assisting the principal with special school programs, religious services, projects,

and co-curricular activities, even though some of these may be delegated to other staff members.

C. Assists the principal in providing information for the preparation of the annual budget to be submitted to the Board.

D. Participates in discussion at all faculty meetings.

IV. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES A. Communicates effectively with pupils, evidencing a love of them, commending and reinforcing good

conduct and achievement on the part of pupils.

B. Encourages pupil leadership, pupil concern, and responsibility for behavior of peers. C. Understands and respects the rights of pupils.

V. INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Keeps abreast of current methods, trends, and materials as they relate to the instructional program

at St. Peter Lutheran School. B. Learning:

1. Designs all learning experiences to lead the pupils into a growing relationship with Christ and a life of Christian discipleship.

2. Makes provisions for individual differences.

3. Uses wholesome motivation constantly. 4. Uses diagnostic and remedial procedures effectively.

5. Evaluates pupil achievement adequately. 6. Counsels pupils individually as necessary.

7. Meets with parents as frequently as is necessary to discuss the child’s development. C. Methods:

1. Uses planned visual aids.

2. Varies teaching procedures.

D. Planning:

1. Has written lesson plans available at all times. 2. Plans annually, uses curriculum mapping to show plans in each curriculum area.

E. Discipline:

1. Fosters a spirit of love and forgiveness in Christ Jesus among pupils and between pupils and teachers. The Gospel dominates as opposed to the Law.

2. Is effective and fair in handling pupil discipline using Law and Gospel as the basis for discipline. F. Knowledge of pupils:

1. Assesses the ability of the pupil. 2. Reviews the academic record of each child in his/her classroom.

3. Utilizes resource materials on age level traits and characteristics of pupils taught.

4. Understands backgrounds through visits and/or consultations with parents. G. Sees that classroom appearance is interesting, stimulating, student oriented, neat and clean, pleasant

in appearance, articles and displays are current and correlated with curriculum, and tables and chairs fit the student using them.

H. Exhibits mission education and stewardship traits.

I. Maintains adequate records for purposes of guidance and counseling. J. Executes standardized testing programs & provides for recording & studying the test results.

K. Leads children in prayer often throughout the day. (see THR “”Devotions”)

VI. CLERICAL RESPONSIBILITIES A. Handles clerical work involved in scheduling trips and visits by pupils.

B. Prepares necessary routine reports (e.g. milk and lunch count, attendance).

C. Maintains the permanent records (CA-60) in the office for each child (see THR “Record Keeping”)

VII. PROMOTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES A. Promotes a clear understanding of the school's distinctive nature, both in the congregation and in the

community.

B. Participates actively in St. Peter Lutheran Church activities and exercises spiritual leadership in other congregational agencies of Christian education.

C. Evidences concern that the building and grounds reflect a positive image to the community. D. Teachers who receive a call from another congregation are to inform the principal and/or the Board

chairperson immediately.

VIII. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Is responsible for the corridor, lunchroom, bus loading, car loading, and other supervision as it is assigned. This supervision must be done on site.

B. Is responsible for keeping children on their schedule. C. May be asked to serve in one or more tasks as delineated on the “Responsibility List.”

D. Is responsible for collecting monies and reporting them accurately to the school office.

E. Is responsible for supervising adults and children on field trips.

IX. GUIDANCE RESPONSIBILITIES A. Reports to parents systematically.

B. Provides the guidance appropriate to the experience and maturity of the student.

X. RELATIONSHIP TO THE CHURCH

When a teacher is called to St. Peter Lutheran Church, the teacher is expected to take an active role in the church and its activities. Generally the teachers are to refrain from fulfilling elected positions.
