Principal’s Report— Mr J Feeney

We’ve got just over two weeks left of Term 2, so halfway through our school year already!

As we draw term 2 to a close, you will be receiving your mid-year reports about children’s academic achievement. When these come out, please do read them carefully, and get in touch with your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

I’ve had some comments in the past from parents regarding the comments on our reports. Indications are that parents don’t find the comments particularly useful. The report cards are a key communication tool about children’s learning, and we need to make sure we get them right. I would like to hold a meeting to consult with parents to gauge your views next week on Tuesday, June 19 at 5:15pm in the hall. I will send out an invitation with your children, and would ask you to return the reply slip to indicate that you are coming to the meeting to have your say. The more the merrier!

Next week is show-day holiday. Please note that Friday is a regular school day, and we need all children to attend. This term is an 11 week term, which means the week following the show day holiday is also a regular school week.

We’re looking forward to our Year 5 Leadership Camp, which will be held towards the end of Term 3. In order to finalise bookings, though, the final balance on the camp is due next week on Friday,, June 22.

One of the big events to come in our school calendar this term is our Athletics Carnival and Ball Games Competition. After big events such as this, we take parental feedback into account, and adapt our carnivals appropriately to try and make the best carnival for our community. This year, West Tigers Leagues Club has agreed to host our Senior Carnival on their grounds next Wednesday for our 9-12 Year Olds. As it’s not on site, we have sent home a permission slip to allow us to take the children to Wests. I would encourage all parents to sign and return the form, as all senior children are participating in the events, and this is the culmination of children’s learning in the PE curriculum.

We’ve split our Junior Carnival to make the day easier to manage, but also because the focus of the day is quite different. The main purpose of the Senior Carnival is about competition, while the Junior Carnival is about participation and enjoyment. We will be holding our Ball Games Competition at our school on the morning of Thursday June 28, and following it with our Junior Carnival also on our school grounds on the afternoon of Thursday, June 28.

We’ve not got a lot of time left this term, but every day counts. I will be reviewing attendance data and sending out notification emails to all parents over the next few weeks. If you have any questions about attendance or need support from the school to help improve your child’s attendance, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2018

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is an annual state-wide initiative for students up to Year 9. The challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning.

Reading plays an important part in students’ lives during their school years and beyond. It allows children to actively engage their imagination and opens up a world of educational opportunities.

The reading period for the 2018 Premier's Reading Challenge commenced on Monday 14 May and closes Friday 24 August.

This year the Premier has challenged all school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2018 challenge is to engage more students than ever before.

Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier. Students who participate but don’t complete the challenge receive a Certificate of Participation from the school.

For more information about the Premier’s Reading Challenge, please visit:

http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/readingchallenge/

We look forward to seeing as many of our students as possible embrace the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Talking Families

Community education campaign

Parenting is hard, but you’re not alone

It’s a myth that you’re born with parenting skills. You learn as you go and there are going to be times when parents will feel overwhelmed or frustrated with the pressures of raising children. But you’re not alone — all parents struggle with the stress of parenting.

Getting it off your chest helps. Just talking to someone about what’s worrying you can be the first step to realising you’re not alone and getting the help you need.

The Talking Families website is full of helpful information and easy ways to ask people around you for help before you feel like you’ve reached breaking point. And you may be surprised at just how many people you know who would be happy to offer support. Go to www.talkingfamilies.qld.gov.au

Parents can also follow the Talking Families Facebook community for information about events, tips for parenting, and different ways to get some support @talkingfamiliesqld

Talking Families is an initiative by the Queensland Family and Child Commission.

The Queensland Youth Orchestra will be visiting the

school on Wednesday 27 June. This is a free event and all

students will be treated to a concert by the youth

orchestra including 2 combined pieces with our very own

instrumental students.
