FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends, Congratulation to everyone involved
in the 2018 Billy Cart Derby. Special mention to Mrs White who led the teachers in the planning and organisation of the day and to Rhonda in the office for all of the administration and to Sue in the office for counting thousands of dollars mostly in coins! It was the culmination of many meetings and hours of work.
What a wonderful day we had, capped off by perfect weather. Thank you to our amazing parents who built billy carts, helped on stalls, provided first aid, cheer squads and assisted with set up and pack up. We even had a visit from our member for Blue Mountains who is also a keen sponsor.
As always thanks to Mr George Vergotis and his staff at Blackheath Automotives, who spent the entire Thursday and Friday in the preparation and running of the day. Thank you to all of the generous sponsors who contributed to a grand total of over $16 000. This money will be spent on exercise equipment to be installed on the school oval. Once again the wonderful community of Blackheath has shown its support
and commitment to our school and its students. Thank you Blackheath! School Holidays
Spring is here and it is the end of Term 3. Term 4 will commence on Monday October 15. I hope you enjoy the change of routine and stay safe.
School Traffic
Thank you to all parents who read the notes in the previous newsletter and have been taking extra care around the school. Thank you too for remembering Kiss and Drop means staying in your car, dropping the children and vacating the spot to allow other cars in. We will soon be having a meeting with Trish Doyle, Council and RMS
representative to explore extra options to keep our precious children safe when travelling to and from school.
Education Day Assembly Please join us on Friday October 19 for our Education
Day assembly at 11.30. All students will be performing. You are welcome to join your child and visit their classroom after assembly. There will also be a book fair in the library all day. We will look forward to seeing you!! Donation
Thank you so much to the members of Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Blue Mountains who have generously donated $2 000 to Music in our school. Mrs Lanyon has purchased some musical instruments which will be rented to students.
The Society can be found on the internet at http://www.adfas.org.au
Their 2019 program of lectures is online now. Warm Regards, Jane Davies, Principal

Thank you to BMCC, BANC, Murray Reid
and Graeme Roth for the great bike workshop held at Blackheath School on Saturday. Children came from across the Blue Mountains to attend this. It was wonderful to see children fine tuning
their bike riding ability. The children received a free sample bag plus sausage sizzle on the day. This event was organised as part of NSW Bike Week.
FIRE TRUCK VISIT
MUSIC NEWS: STAGE 2 & 3 CHOIRS OFF TO SYDNEY Our Stage 2 and 3 choirs have been working all year
towards two big Sydney concerts. Finally they had their
chance last week to enjoy their moment on the stage.
The Sydney Town Hall played host to the Primary
Proms, a series of concerts for Stage 2 choirs from
across NSW. Our Stage 2 singers enjoyed performing in
this beautiful venue with its stained glass windows and
world famous organ. The Stage 3 choir performed at
the Sydney Opera House in the Festival of Choral
Music, a wonderful series of concerts showcasing some
of the best musical talent from NSW Public Schools. Our
students joined with 700 other singers from across the
state to perform 11 2-part songs in the Opera House's
Concert Hall. Congratulations choirs on your wonderful
performances and exemplary behaviour!

THE SYDNEY TOWN HALL
On Friday 21st September,
we welcomed the Rural Fire Service and their truck to the school playground. K-2 students had a ball climbing through the truck and
spraying the hose, providing the playground with some much-needed water. We also welcomed Kookaburra Kindy students
to visit the truck. We thank the Rural Fire Service for visiting our school and providing valuable information to
students about fire safety. Angela Tomiczek

BILLCART DERBY 2018
Congratulations to all BPS students for their incredible performances at the Billy Cart Derby, your outfits and billycarts were just amazing, and well done to the mums and dads who participated in the Canteen Cup for
getting into the spirit of the day.
We had a great crew of helpers that set up the course
and banners on Thursday, special mention to George Vergotis, Darryl & Lynne Gawthorpe, Connor White and Matthew Van Horen. Big thanks to Damon Anderson for providing First Aid to participants and to our House Captains and Vice Captains and the School Leadership Team who were fantastic course supervisors. It was also awesome to have so many parents helping with the packing away of gear at the end of the Derby as it made
the task so much easier.
Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who were
involved with the racing, baking cakes, donating goods and assisting with the running of stalls. The day would not have been as successful without your support. The
Cake Stall was a resounding success raising over $1000, while the White Elephant Stall raised nearly $800. The face painting, hair creations, raffle, pop up canteen and 100 club were also very successful.
The generosity of our sponsors was greatly appreciated,
and together with our other fund raising activities, over $16,000 was collected. We have placed an order for our new soccer nets that hopefully will be installed early Term 4 and additional equipment will be ordered in the near future.
Congratulations to Mr Brownlow’s class who raised the most money $1153.20. They received a free sausage
sizzle on Monday. The highest individual fund raisers were Owen Tomiczek who raised $760, Alana Murray
$400 and Izac Finn $221. These children were given special gift vouchers at Assembly on Monday.
Thanks everyone and don’t forget to keep your outfits and billycarts for the Rhododendron Parade.

STAMPS Do you throw away your used stamps? If so, please tear off the stamp and bring it
to Sue in the school office for donation to the Red Cross. Money raised by the
foundation is used to support under-privileged families in Australia
NOYIFYING ILLNESS Students in our school are currently receiving treatment which results in a lowered immune system, which means, the students are more prone to getting ill from infections. As the students are not contagious but have chronic illnesses, it is important they participate actively in the day to day school program without any major limitations. A major concern is that if these students develop measles, chickenpox, whooping cough or influenza, they could become seriously ill. I seek your cooperation in preventing this situation. If your child has, or may have, measles, chicken pox or other infectious illness, I would ask that you please:
1. Do not send them to school. 2. Notify the School Principal as soon as possible. 3. Take them to your GP or medical centre to confirm diagnosis if possible. Thanking you in anticipation, Jane Davies Principal
A gentle reminder that all payments MUST be in by the due
date on the note. Due to our Department of Education
system we cannot process money that comes in after the closing date. You may find that the online payment may seem
to work as this is the bank’s system but the money cannot be processed for that event and will be put into credit for
your future use. If finance is an issue PLEASE complete the assistance form BEFORE the due date. You are more than
welcome to reimburse us after the date.

SUPPORT GROUP FOR PARENTS & CARERS OF
CHILDREN WITH AUTISM
Do you have a child attending Blackheath Public who is, or is suspected to be, on the Autism Spectrum? We are looking
for parents and carers interested in getting together to pool information and knowledge, to learn from each other’s
experiences, and possibly, potentially to widen the scope of resources available to families in the Upper Mountains.
Whether you are very new to this journey and without an official diagnosis, or it’s a road you have been on for years and
you have wisdom and experience to share, it would be great to connect with you. We will be using Mrs Bishop’s learning
support room as a place to meet up on Wednesday mornings, from 8.40ish till 9.30ish. Just turn up, or if this isn’t a time
that works for you, please text or email your details and we will keep you in the loop.

TRISTAN BANCKS On Thursday 13th September, Stage 3 were thrilled to
host a visit by Tristan Bancks. Many of them are fans of his work, particularly
“The Fall” which is a KOALAs finalist this year. We learnt that Tristan grew up
in the Blue Mountains, attending Springwood PS and Winmalee HS. Many of
the settings in his books are based on Blue Mountains locales. He shared with
us the important plot details in a story – What does the character want? What are the conflicts? And what are the
stakes? He also shared one of the most important parts of his writing – each book has a soundtrack! The right music
just “fits” the book and helps him write

The Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2018 is now over. Congratulations to these
36 students who completed the challenge this year: Heidi Hanemann, Gryffyn
Hoekstra, Ella Kingswood, Alice Liddell Kirkwood, Adelaide Manners, Eleanor
Aksman-Glosz, Logan Nagy, Thomas Hanemann, Lola Hodgson, Elvie Hoekstra,
Liam Kingswood, Henry Liddell Kirkwood, Aneirin Mullard Boehringer, Michaela
Rauckman, Erik Aksman-Glosz, Matilda Bhattarai, Thomas Curtis, Ruby Dowdell,
Alton Freeman, Griffin Hunt, Sasha Kelly, Amber Shiels, Georgina Touhill, Giselle
Brogan, Ginger Foster, Luke McGrath, Ainsley Pollard, Julia Ross, Keira Atkinson, Anneke Godfrey, Miette Hoekstra,
Hannah Strong, Sierra Corkins, Thomas O'Connor, Justine Pollard and Jem Sullivan. Hooray you reading heroes! And
everyone can start recording books for next year’s challenge, which will open during term 1 2019.
KOALAs
This week during library lessons our students’ final votes will be
collected to send to the KOALA Council, then tallied with all the other
votes from around New South Wales. Any students who are absent on
their library day can see my before Friday afternoon to ensure their votes
are collected and added to the tally. Then at Awards Day on November 8th,
we’ll discover which books won. I am arranging an excursion to attend
Awards Day, which this year is being held at Cranbrook Junior School in
Rose Bay. More details will follow.
BOOK FAIR It’s that time of year again! The Scholastic
Book Fair arrives this Thursday. This is the one where
children buy books for themselves, to take home and
keep. Of course you can still buy books to donate to
the library as well if you want to, but the main
purpose of this event is to buy books for home. In
library classes, starting this Friday, and continuing
through week 1 of term 4, library classes will be spent previewing the books available and writing wish lists. With these
wish lists, that children will be bringing home, you can send your child to school on Education Day with the money to
buy their choice of books if you won’t be here to buy for them. Education Day, and the Book Fair, this year is Friday 19 th
October (week 1 term 4). OVERDUES
Overdue notes have been sent
home. Please ask your child if they
have one, as books that aren’t
returned will need to be replaced.
Finding missing library books is
always a great excuse for cleaning
up bedrooms! I won’t even fine you – not even ten cents - if you can return them. Have a wonderful, literature-soaked
holiday everyone. Cathy Lamond, teacher-librarian.
LIBRARY NEWS
Blackheath P&C Facebook page is the place to go to find out what is happening with all things relating to the P&C. There will be an up-to-the minute vibe on volunteering, fundraisers, entertainment or random information that might just make you smile. Feel free to contact us if you have anything you would like to
share, like or comment on. Or you can go mid-twentieth century and pop suggestions into the P&C box tucked into its own little nook near the front door. You can also catch the news on the
Blackheath School website - http://www.blackheath-p.schools.nsw.edu.au WOO HOO! TERM 3 NEARLY DONE AND DUSTED Big congrats to all of you who have made it safely through Term 3. Before you know it the end of
the year will be tailgating you all the way to Christmas. It is always good to take stock, take a breath and take a moment to be grateful for all that has come your way this year. We for one are really grateful for our talented teachers and terrific teaching support staff, our courageous canteen team and our vibrant volunteer collective who help us get the things done that we need
to. Have a great holiday break and take some time to think about the fab things that lie ahead. Try not to worry about the looming Christmas deadline. CANTEEN CAPERS In Term 3, the canteen ladies and their helpers have served almost 1500 gelatos after school, they have made almost 950 pizzas and close to 3000
cheesy scrolls have gone over that canteen counter. We don’t know how they do it day after day but they do – and our school community is very lucky to have them on our side.
BREAKFAST CLUB Breakfast Club is open from 8.30am until 8.55am offering breakfast to kids who might have skipped this important meal of the day with healthy
cereal and warm milk to help keep the tummy rumbles at bay. This is a service run solely by volunteers – if you want to sign up to help out, drop by the canteen to put your name down.
NOURISH: FOOD FOR THE HEART AND SOUL – THE VERY SPECIAL BPS SCHOOL COOBOOK This little cookbook of ours is still heading out into the world. Did you
know that every single cent goes back to the school? So if you know of someone who hasn’t got their hands on a cookbook, a little persuasion might help. This is your school cookbook and your child/ren will benefit directly from the money raised. We are now aiming to raise money for a shade structure at the back of the school
hall – if we sell the rest of our cookbooks we will be able to buy one. We only have 260 cookbooks left – if every single family sold just one, we would have our cold hard cash!

DROPPING OFF & PICKING UP AT SCHOOL
DRIVING AND PARKING NEAR SCHOOLS
The beginning and end of the school day are busy times for
pedestrians and vehicles outside schools. Parking signs are
planned with your child's safety in mind.
It is helpful for everyone if you park safely, even if you have to walk further to the school
gate. This is a good time to model positive road safety behaviour and physical activity for
your child.
Slow down near any crossings around the school. At a supervised crossing, follow the
directions of the school crossing supervisor. Crossing supervisors manage traffic to help
primary school children use the crossings on roads near and outside of schools.
Drop your child off and pick them up on the school side of the road. Calling out to them
from across the road is dangerous – they may run to you without checking for traffic. This
will help keep all children as safe as possible during the busiest times of the school day.
You should always:
park legally
avoid dangerous manoeuvers such as U-turns and three-point turns
give way to pedestrians, particularly when entering or exiting driveways
avoid using the school car park or driveway
avoid parking in the school bus bay
make sure your child uses the Safety Door (rear kerb-side door) to get in and out of
the car
Dangerous driving behaviour around schools puts children at risk.
Model safe and considerate behaviour for your child – they will learn from you.
THE EARLY YEARS OF SCHOOL
Starting school means lots of changes for you and your
child. It is crucial to plan and talk about safe travel to
and from school with your child.
Starting school probably means your child will see
themselves as a “big kid”. They may even want to travel
to school by themselves, with friends or siblings.
However, your young child is still developing many of the skills they need to be safe in a
road traffic environment.
Until your child is at least 8 years old, hold their hand:
crossing on the footpath
in the car park
when crossing the road
Up until at least 10 years old, supervise your child very closely, holding their hand when
crossing the road. If a hand isn’t available they should hold an arm, bag, clothes or the
pram.
In the early years of your child's schooling, there are many road safety considerations for
you to think about.
The route to and from school may be unfamiliar
Plan a safe route together and practice walking it on weekends or school holidays. As you
walk together, talk about all the things you are doing to keep you both safe.
Most journeys to and from school are in peak hours
Roads are full of people and vehicles. The roads around schools are busy places and can
make the journey to school hazardous. Always closely and actively supervise your child.
Hold hands together when walking on the footpath and crossing the road. You should do
this until they are at least ten years old.
The beginning and end of the school day can be hectic
Entering or leaving the school can be a source of great excitement or even stress! Your
child may not be focused on their own safety. Arrange a safe place to meet inside the
school grounds or on the school side of the road. Never call your child across the road.
