¡Hola! Welcome to Spanish class! Entering my 10th year as the Spanish teacher at Beye, one of my goals is to continue to strengthen communication with families and find ways to share learner progress. One way I will continue to communicate this year is through my Spanish newsletter. In addition to this, the Spanish World Language team has also established a Facebook group D97 Spanish, a twitter account @D97Spanish and a website d97spanish.weebly.com. I will also be tweeting from @SraColmeneroD97. These media outlets will feature photos and videos for all of our elementary schools, Spanish teachers, and grade levels, as well as other articles or events pertaining to language learning. Feel free to comment and communicate through these outlets as well as through email: [email protected]. Although you are in no way obligated to utilize any of these platforms, I feel it is an excellent way to help strengthen the home-school connection and influence student achievement and motivation. Did you know? It takes approximately 240 minutes to improve in Spanish; our students only have class 60 (3 rd , 4 th and 5 th grade) or 90 minutes (K, 1 st and 2 nd ) a week. On average, students need to hear a word approximately 100 times before they can effectively and efficiently produce the word. Therefore, most of our students are novice learners that need context, visuals, and familiar contexts to help them communicate, and they do so best with those accustomed to interacting with language learners. You could think of it like this: Novice Listeners: They typically understand isolated words, then one phrase at a time, sometimes with repetition. Then they begin to recognize and understand a number of very high-frequency words and phrases when strongly supported by context. Novice Readers: They typically recognize a very limited number of letters or words, cognates and high-frequency words and phrases when strongly supported by context. Novice Writers: They typically are able to copy familiar words or phrases, beginning slowly with one word at a time. With adequate time and familiar cues they can reproduce from memory a very limited number of isolated words or familiar phrases, but errors are to be expected. Novice Speakers: They are typically able to recite memorized high-frequency words and phrases when strongly supported by context, beginning with one-word responses. With time and familiar cues they may be able to exchange greetings, give their identity, name and

describe familiar objects from their immediate environment, respond to direct questions with two or three words answers or even answer repeating words in the question. Errors are to be expected. Their pronunciation is just beginning to develop and it may have overtones of their native language or be difficult to understand. (For more information: http://actflproficiencyguidelines2012.org) These are the skills we have been working on since school started: Kindergarten: The children learned how to say their names, how they are feeling and how old they are. We have also practiced the date and learned colors using the book Oso Pardo (Brown Bear). 1st grade: The students are reviewing how to say their names, where they live, how they are feeling, the date and when it is their birthday. They are now learning how to describe something using adjectives. 2nd grade: The students have been reviewing the skills previously described. They are learning how to ask for help in the classroom (in Spanish). When they ask for ANYTHING it should be in Spanish, if they don’t remember they should still ask “ ¿Cómo se dice X en español?” We also started practicing basic spelling. 3rd grade: The students reviewed all the skills previously described. At this age they are becoming very good spellers and it is easier for them to read and understand a written word in the right context. We have invested some time learning how to ask for specific help in the Spanish classroom. 4th grade: As in 3rd grade, they have reviewed basic skills as well as learned new ones. In preparation for our travel unit we started learning about the countries that have Spanish as their official language. 5th grade: Students have been reviewing a lot of skills learned during the past years they have had Spanish with me. We are continuing our travel unit and our first stop is Mexico. We will be reading the novel “Tumba” in class. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Email works best: [email protected] ¡Hasta pronto!
