Insidethelineslessons.com 2018 Cycle 1, Week 13 –Giotto Materials: Cardstock (can print the images from page 2 of lesson plan, if desired) Brightly colored chalk in a variety of colors Mortar and pestle Containers for chalk dust Spoons Paintbrushes Palettes (or muffin tins) Several egg yolks mixed with water (2 tsp. water per egg yolk) Optional: Pipette Paper towels, water for cleaning brushes Book/images of Giotto’s work 1. Look at an image of Giotto’s work. Discuss the time period and style of his work. What kinds of colors did he use? Do you see any shading? How did he get that effect? In what ways does the artwork look 3-dimensional? Where do you think Giotto got all the paint and colors for his paintings? 2. Describe how artists of the time had to make their own paints and supplies: Giotto made tempera paint from mixing minerals with egg yolk and water. Allow students to take turns grinding the chalk. 3. Have parents help put chalk and the egg tempera in each student’s (or set of students) palette. 5. Students paint a picture of their own design, or print the following images before hand for students to paint. Note: Grind the chalk beforehand. Have one piece of whole chalk in class so students can see and experience the process as well.
